Surviving the Game as a Barbarian

I couldn’t even clear the 2D version, now to clear the game in reality?

Maybe I’ll have to live here for the rest of my life.

Well, even that won’t be easy.

– A player found himself in the game, Dungeon and Stone, as a savage barbarian.

To keep his secret, he must become the mask – must make himself be seen as more savage, more fearless than any others – a paragon of his race in the eyes of the whole world.

Back on earth, in the empty darkened room, the quiet computer again began to whir. Text began to appear on the black screen.

「Synchronization complete. 」

It's amazing how the author takes a potentially fun premise with unga-bunga protagonist and writes the most boring and mundane events. Most parts of chapters are spent on running somewhere, stat info dumps or dealing with yet another group of adventurers who try to kill the MC over loot.

There are no fun side characters or character interactions. Every major arc the author gives the MC a new teammate, forces them to run a dungeon together, then casually throws them away from the story. I am at chapter 80+ and not... more>> sure if the current team sticks around or he will do the same trick the third time.

The only even remotely interesting thing happening is the existence of the other players, who get witch hunted by the natives.

Overall it's yet another soulless novel that feels like a bunch of side quests and chores stiched into a story and doesn't shine out in any way. <<less

I enjoyed this one.
The action elements were engaging, and the situations were quite fun and sticky. I liked a lot of the characters and the way they interacted with the main character and each other. Author and translator brought a sense of charm to the world.

Looks like the official translation has started up.

Ashen Clouds, the Translator posted the following Project discontinuation notice.

"Naver, the Korean webtoon/novel platform, has launched a serial fiction service called Yonder for the English-speaking market. This project is included as part of its starter novels. This translation had always been about letting people share and enjoy the great fun I’d had reading this story, so there’s no particular need to keep this TL project ongoing."

Here's to the novel getting some more love and appreciation! Much appreciation for the work up to this point!

I don't like the narrative style. The MC is supposed to be wise or intelligent, but what I can see is someone that can't even take his own advice to think and act. If he thinks before doing something it takes so much time that it's preposterous.

BTW The graphic art of the novel shows how little author cares about realism of shield use.

Translator is good, at ch49*. I would say this is one of the few web novels I still read and also look forward to updating. I like how the main character is so much solo and parties a lot. I think the different characters and dynamics are fun and done well. I think people who enjoy harsh survival, slow pacing, and attempted flushed out characters will enjoy this. Well executed but not master piece, it's a great novel to come back and have fun with. i hope the author and... more>> story continues to have good arcs, pacing and planning. I hope I never get bored and look forward to the next chapter as always! <<less

You can read most recent chapters at hentranslations (free) and yonder (more chaps but $ locked). It is not posted on novel updates and I'm too lazy to add the links. The translation starts off from somewhere where the manhwa left off rather than from C1 though. The translation/editing quality is pretty good. Start from hen as u can get free chaps to 100 something, from then you'll need to pay on yonder of I wish to catch up to translation

Although I was pretty sure the rating will drop soon... more>> as the harem started at 140ish chaps, where the free translation stopped, and unlucky it is the common cringe and cliche type with cardboard lines... but surprisingly it still has been amazing an amazing novel. The slowish romance was also good until those with love interests met each other. But although the bad harem romance gets in the way, it isn't in the way too much, and luckily it's written in a way nor with too much focus where it doesn't ruin the story, thank god

Very addictive read. The manga is great too, though I wish the art was better as the character art is honestly kinda bad in the manhwa <<less

Perfection.

I could write how this is the best representation of a Diablo'eque (or other Roguelike) games/concepts done right in an 'Isekai/game like setting' or the fact that it's literally what a Dark souls game that isn't focused on solo but Party play + politics/intrigue/mysteries + a touch of the 'Lord of the mysteries' best aspect (the weekly gathering/tarrot club meeting) is in a refreshing and AMAZING way, but honestly? Nothing I write will do it justice. It is even worth my $ to pay for it on Yonder that has... more>> an AMAZING Translation that sticks to the official webtoons Manhwa translation (well yonder is owned by webtoons/naver so obviously) other than a few gripes of weird word choices sometimes (Elf being translated as fairy or 'dealings/dealer' that is referring to damage dealers/damage) it really is flawless. And I RALLY enjoy reading the official yonder version.

10/10. <<less

So far so good!

So far, so good! First of all, the MC is not overpowered (at least in the 700 pages that I have read). He starts from scratch with only knowledge about the game, but the world he enters is set 150 years in the future from the game.

The MC is also very human. He's not the helpful kind and experiences emotions like anger and envy, just like a normal person. The side characters are also well-developed and have a strong presence.

I can't say much about the world-building. It's... more>> engaging and vast, but at the same time, it feels so small. (Maybe because I'm still on early chapter / 2nd floor) <<less

The author nerfed the MC because he gave him a great ability that was broken in early chapters. The MC has this attitude of it making perfect sense and being acceptable. Me if I'm playing a game with him as a character he went from prime gold to beaten up old bronze very fast with that nerf.

When I read a novel where the main premise is the MC got isekai'd into their favorite video game, I would expect the author to expand on the world with a new perspective merely playing the game would never give. In Surviving as a Barbarian, the world it takes place in is so incredibly devoid of description, half the time the characters might as well be walking around in a void. The people the MC interacts with are paper thin on detail, often including only race, class, and... more>> gender w/ so little personality I think calling them 1D is an overstatement. Descriptions are so sparse the author doesn't even mention the weapons they carry with them until they actually get used in combat.

The main "focus" of the author's writings here is the stream of consciousness of the MC. It mostly consists of dealing with immediate problems & if there are none it usually time skips to when there is a problem. However for all the time spent on the MC, he never once thinks about what his goals are in this universe. The title of the novel says survive, but it seems the MC is just focused on treating his new life as a game and beating it, again he never considers this problem, I'm just inferring from 90 chapters. For some very light spoilers, the MC becomes
Spoiler

power and very rich

[collapse]
in the first 20 chapters, which completely deflates the tension of surviving. The rest of the story is mostly him exploiting his OP OP gamer knowledge and getting getting very lucky with drops (yes this is a critical part of the MC character power development, getting very lucky with drops as he never shuts up about it when it happens).

This novel makes shield hero look good, so it baffles me it has as high a rating as it does. <<less

This is basically your standard Korean game world novel except better executed than most. The supporting cast is a lot better than what you will find in a lot of this type of novel but honestly still not super interesting. If you like this type of novel you should enjoy this quite a bit. I found the main protagonists overly pragmatic personality and how its championed by the narrative kind of obnoxious, but others may see it as a plus.
