I couldn’t even clear the 2D version, now to clear the game in reality?

Maybe I’ll have to live here for the rest of my life.

Well, even that won’t be easy.

– A player found himself in the game, Dungeon and Stone, as a savage barbarian.

To keep his secret, he must become the mask – must make himself be seen as more savage, more fearless than any others – a paragon of his race in the eyes of the whole world.

Back on earth, in the empty darkened room, the quiet computer again began to whir. Text began to appear on the black screen.

As of this review, I am currently ~300 chapters into the raws.

Overall the story is decent but there is one major flaw that completely ruined the experience for me several times throughout the course of my reading. The author construes the plot such that the protagonist will find himself in the worst imaginable situations possible time and time again. There is no middle ground here, it's always either 0 or 100. Some may enjoy this seemingly sadistically perverse and gutwrenching method of storytelling, but I for one prefer when story... more>> events are less predictable and more diverse. If every single time it's the worse possible thing that could happen then you know exactly what to expect, there's no subtlety or variation in the tricks the author pulls to attempt to engage the reader.

It can be both boring and frustrating to read through but what makes it even worse is the way in which the author resolves these conflicts within his story. To make a long story short: plot armor. The author ensures that the protagonist will always make it out, no matter what - but only after mentally torturing his readers first. To give a few examples; there were several instances in which the main character faces off against traditionally 'squishy' characters only for them to facetank all the damage in the world. It doesn't make sense that a healer, an assassin and a summoner can get hit by explosions, mace swings, etc. Only to get up and shrug it off as if nothing happened.

The author often sets up scenes such that the protagonist will struggle and sacrifice over the course of several/many chapters to get in just one hit against his enemy only for it to do nothing for no reason other than that the author felt like it. In other words, the author doesn't write the story with any sense of consistency. Characters are as strong as he needs them to be in that moment even if it contradicts the logic of his own world. Healers and damage dealers should not be more durable than tanks. <<less

An amazing series, good main character, tank vision, not much romance involved but there is a few... Amazing progression, not rushed, good balance beteween adventure, political, grinding, mental battles... I can rate S tier easily, in my opinion.

Totally recommended!

Finally another good novel after I don't know how many years...

Although the tropes and scenarios are cliche and contrived as usual, how the people act in the situation they're presented with is perfectly reasonable and consistent.

MC is both insanely unlucky and lucky at the same time (constantly struggling, barely ever gets a break, but the hardship leads to great rewards).

Hopefully it won't disappoint down the line

This is pretty good. Though it's still early, the author is showing proper writing and thought processes ability which 99% of authors on this website lack. The story makes sense. The MCs thought process and actions make sense and feel realistic. The power system, though still not fully shown, seems interesting yet reasonable (as opposed to the tr*sh cultivation type stuff or instant God isekai type stuff where they find some object and become the strongest on the planet).

The MC is likable (at first) and actually has a personality that... more>> is consistent, realistic, and makes sense. The girl that was introduced so far is also very likable, though I'm hoping theres at least a few more significant side characters coming soon that arent NPC types (ie simple barbarian friends or common bad guy types).

EDIT: I actually dislike the MC now, as of chapter 20. The past 2-3 chapters, his interactions with the girl irritate me. I get the feeling the author is anti social/doesn't have friends and doesnt know how to write interactions properly now. The MC is a douche going off his inner thoughts while talking to her, basically looking down on her and feeling good about himself for using the "carrot and stick" approach with her, being a bit of an ass then throwing out some subtle somewhat nice ish comment. Then he mentally gives himself a pat on the back every time and says "there, threw her a carrot" and acts like shes some annoying girl following him around even though that's not how it is. Just in general, like the past few chapters the MC just seems like a douche bag. The dungeon or tower or whatever seems interesting, though I hope theres some other stuff and that it doesnt remain as the only special setting and maybe other stuff will be introduced to add intrigue to the story. Or maybe make the tower a bit more mystical or something rather than simple levels filled with creatures.

Other than my gripe with the MCs personality recently, the story seems to have solid writing and seems like it may turn out to be one of the better novels out there. <<less

Current ch: 220

I really wish this novel was translated further than 220, but unfortunately not.

This is the second best novel I have read so far, and I have read quite a few at this point.

The game system is so fleshed out, everything feels interesting and the situations are mostly believable. I also love the fact that our MC is not dumb and makes smart decisions while pretending to be for the sake of being a barbarian. Also the fact that he has to stay hidden as an Evil Spirit. Definite... more>> 5/5 here

A great novel. That should be enough but I'll say more. It's the first novel that feels like a realistic take of ending up in a hard video I've ever seen done.

The MC who spent ten years to beat a disgustingly hard computer game that was unpopular and is now using his brain 100% all the time to stay alive. And although he knows the game in and out for the most part this reality patch as he calls it really makes him work for it to both stay alive... more>> and and grow stronger. Especially as new elements were added to the game.

He knows plenty of hidden pieces, but as the existence of players are known as Evil Spirits, so he can't stand out and become OP by showing off his game knowledge unrestrained like so many novels love to do.

Also PK is a thing and he will experience being targeted a lot. One review complained about it here but its explained.
Spoiler

MC played the orginal game version of Dungeons and Stones and said it was common to fight plunders all the time when going into the dungeon. Its either due to playing the original game or MC having supernatural bad luck but this continues for him.

MC is also of the Barbarian race who have hearts that are magic ingredients so he was a prime target on the lower floors. This, and the fact that the game/city has very high taxes that have to be paid to avoid execution, so most explorers are desperate for money so plundering is very encouraged.

And lastly their exist a large and hostile faction in the city/game full of players who can also enter the dungeon and wouldn't be strange for them to become plunders.

[collapse]

The game of Dungeons and Stones is truly interesting and creating the right build is very important and annoyingly hard. And while MC makes a lot of money it always feels like he doesn't have enough to feel safe so story stays exciting. Also D&S requires party play so the MC can't s*upidly solo the game as teamwork is required to both survive the upper floors and make money. So anyone a bit tired of the OP MC soloing the game/story will love this novel.

Team work is important so MC must gather comrades he can trust, but Explorers can almost never be trusted. Plunders hiding among them, disputes over drops, and just being good enough are things you have to keep in mind. Also MC doesn't just get the party members he wants because he's so cool and is the MC. In the real world you have to be social and smart, and sometimes you yourself will be judged as reliable or not. And just bad timing is a factor.
Spoiler

The elf girl he made a temporary team in his first dungeon run with couldn't rejoin him due to her sister wanting to train/watch over her and the past war between Elfs and Barbarians not. She obviously likes the MC, but this is reality and she can't just drop everything to join him and the MC without revealing he's a Evil Spirit can't convince the sister that he can make her OP.

A female Barbarian gained the trust of the MC and worked together in his second Dungeon run, but had to leave as an elder of the clan saw her potential and trained her for 6 months. Afterwards she has to prove herself to the MC who grew a lot in the meantime and just barely passed to join his new team he's making. She's loyal and trust the MC, but if she wasn't good enough he wouldn't have invited her.

A wizard despite fighting with the MC once and saved her life straight up told him no as he was too low level for her and couldn't guarentee he could make a team to match her level. MC did save her, but he absolutely could not have survived either without her help. She will join him later on once he's proved his ability and reliability to make a good team.

MC joined a team after the Barbarian girl left. MC eventually came to really trust them in spite of himself, but he knew it was temporary as all but one of them didn't have the talent to keep up with him in the future, or trusted him so much that he could decide their future builds without them suspecting anything. As the MC puts it, it would take years for this tram to become strong and he can't wait that long. This team would eventually disband for reasons unrelated to the above for realistic reasons.

[collapse]

All in all this has been a great read that's stood out among generic and soulless tr*sh out their. You can absolutely trust the good reviews here. It also has a comic you can check out which is gaining momentum if you want to feel this out. And their is a official translation of the novel out their. <<less

Pretty good. Most recent arc was hype to read. This novel has a kinda realism that not all strangers are kind folk, and even the kinder ones you meet aren't pushover and are a bit more self centered. Overall expect a few chapters it's been fun

To be honest, the novel would deserve a bit more than 3/5, it's more like a 7/10.

I decided to round down because the novel seems to have an extremely positive and loving fanbase and harsher comments are sometimes needed.

IMO this novel does something worse than being bad: it's forgettable and boring.

... more>> Let's not lie: both the author and the translator are competent.

My issue is that neither the MC nor the world feel interesting enough.

Clearly, chapter 16 is quite early, some may say even "too early" to judge.

I can't, however, lie: I am not that invested.

The Main Character is still pretty bland and the same is still true for the world.

Like, I could imagine 100 MCs in the same situation do the same stuff in their worlds' dungeons.

I will keep reading, without a doubt, but I won't exactly be gorging myself on chapters.

Still, I can't say I have no hope.

Thank you for reading this revew, have a nice day.

TLDR

The novel is competent, but not really charming. 3, 5/5 -> 3/5 <<less

My standards are increasing every year. Any time there's a 'dungeon', 'surviving', 'guild', or any key words relating to the typical K-novels genre, there really needs to be some kind of new content that isn't some kind of rehash.

Spoiler

There's a number of content that made me tilt my head a little in interest, namely the MC's getting real scared of being killed in the isekai world and how he responded, but those bits were gone way too quickly.

MC seeing someone killed immediately after isekai-ed, killing a goblin, killing a human, killing even more humans.

I don't think I ever saw a CN or KR novel having a protagonist with extreme PTSD or depression yet, and this MC seemed to have signs of it for a moment.... and it's gone (meme). A ton of sh*t just happened in the matter of days, and since the MC is supposedly just an ordinary guy, shouldn't there be some kind of mental health check aftermath? The feeling of going bonkers or adapting so fast that he's numb from killing too many things isn't portrayed here, even when it's written in first person POV.

Female characters aren't interesting for now, given the initial boring events.

[collapse]

I only read 22 chapters thus far, so maybe there would be more exploration to his character and other future characters. But at the 22 chapters mark, he's not an appealing MC to me. 3 stars.

Edit: Caught up to 28 chapters. There are some hints to his past and possibly explains why he adapts so quickly to his situation, which fixes my gripe about it. Plot gets interesting at the end of chapter 28 too. 4.5 stars. <<less

The protagonist is so damn cool. The story is written pretty well. The humor is pretty hilarious, in a slightly dark way, but it's also measured and there isn't too much of it. Honestly, I think if the author wrote a physical book it could be really popular because he is really good at writing down the thoughts of the character and is really good at controlling the pacing. The excitement and desperation of everything is really well written. Like, this is Second Coming of Gluttony all over again for... more>> me, or at least it gives me the feeling of it. It's just better because there's no harem tag. <<less

another disappointment. Like many CN and KR novels it interesting premise but has problems with character building and lots of unnecessary plot-armor. The writer wants to make a not so smart MC look clever and end up with d*mb side characters and forced plots.

It's very good. Surpassed Gluttony as my favorite k-novel. I like Bjorn as a character. And the other characters are all memorable. I surprisingly didn't mind the harem. The author is a very writer, he writes dialogues and action scenes superbly. Even tho most of the action takes place inside the dungeons, the story remains fresh and very gripping. Even tho it's quite dark, bloody and grim, there's always a light shining through. This is also quite humourous at times. This is the top knovel for me. I gave this story a 5 for the first 20ish chapters.... the following 10 gave me concerns. the latest 20 have made me question if I will continue reading.
At 52 the translator has informed the readers that a professional unit is translating it. which is interesting, cause the last 5 chapters have been around 1/5 or maybe 2/5. If the story turns around, I wish any reader the outmost enjoyment. But I'm done with this. GREAT start turned to what a fing waste.
If you are still reading this and wonder why my ratings are the way they are. The world is interesting, and kinda has a violent turbulent feel, then you find out it just doesn't make any fing sense. Out of the maybe 40ish characters that have shown up for anywhere between 4 sentences and dozens of chapters, no one makes sense in their world. There is no way the rules of that world work and the people we meet grew up there. Which leads me into the absolute hatred of the characters. I just can't stand the MC any more, and the side characters are worthless unlikeable turds. I'm out.

I thought this was kind of meh at first -- somewhat interesting story, great translation... but without enough going on to keep me reading for much longer -- but then it got addictive fast.

I'm not sure it's a 5/5 story but it's at least a mid 4. Since we can't choose that I'd rather give it a 5.

The MC is very respectable with a well written story. The world is realistic and unforgiving.

The translation is the best one I have ever seen, the amount of effort they put into adding exhaustive notes at the end of every chapter is heartwarming. I'm writing this review solely to support them and keep the project going.

Would also highly recommend "Turns Out To Be a Genius Duelist" (which is from the same author) and "The Tutorial Is Too Hard".

Amazing.

At first, it seems like it could get a bit repetitive with the going in and out of the labrynth concept, but when he joins a certain group and creates his own mysterious persona in that group I found myself looking forward to their meetings every chapter.

Overall, an amazing novel compared to most of what I've read, and never felt like it was a snoozefest. MC is also not ridiculously OP by himself.

As good as it might be at the beginning, it just gets worse with each chapter.

The fights turn into absolute unreadable tr*sh at later chapters because he suddenly fights some crazy ass strong opponents and miraculously wins/survives.

I also absolutely agree with what bozakir's review says-
Once you notice something wrong with the story, you'll suddenly realize that everything doesn't make any sense.
Also the way MC's progresses is unsatisfactory later on.
