Spending the Villain’s Money to Extend My Life

Gu Shishi, a master of traditional Chinese painting, transmigrated into the role of a cannon fodder in a cliché novel.

The cannon fodder female supporting character was switched at birth. She had barely spent a few days with her biological parents before she was tossed into the wolf’s den by those same parents. Her parents, having no heart to send their fake daughter with a heart disease to live a hard life, forced the real daughter into becoming the replacement. Gu Shishi was sent away to marry the big villain – the rumored evil, cruel, and wife-cursing first young master of the Huo’s.

On the very first day that she had transmigrated, she had to face her fated tragic death….

Luckily, she had also inadvertently discovered the path to altering her fate!

— The more gifts she received from the big villain, the longer she could live and the more cheats she would gain!

At the start I was really interested in this, putting a couple of hours in and even reading it while I was in class. But after a hundred or so chapters went by I found myself getting just plain bored with this novel. The MC, Gu Shishi is alright for the most part, but overall her character is pretty bland, nothing really special about her beside having a system and being talented in painting.

The side characters are likable, especially the ML's sister. They aren't brain dead side characters who only... more>> exist to highlight the MC and they do seem to have personalities of their own.

The only really big issue I have with this novel is the ML. His character is so unappealing! He constantly hides things from the MC and get jealous at the smallest things. I know most MLs in this genre are like that but he really jolts my nerves. He never tries to clear up ANY misunderstandings that he himself made and he can't even communicate properly with the people around him. The thing that really put the final nail in the coffin for me is when he thinks of of having children without even asking the MC on how she felt about that kind of thing!! Seriously that's a major red flag if I've ever seen one, both people in the relationship should be on mutual grounds and should respect each other boundaries.

Spoiler

Also, lets talk about the ML's 'curse'. I mean it's seriously flat out ridiculous who in the world would ever believe that?! Well besides superstitious people, with how some of the people who are portrayed as intelligent in the novel, should be able to figure out how s*upid this whole 'curse' thing really is.

[collapse]

Anyways, thank you for coming to my TED talk. <<less

The novel contains many issues we really detest such as toxic relationships, racism, yeah basically you can find many bad elements in the story but if you read just to escape from reality makes you give a bad review but in my view of this particular novel the translator really helps in giving out the reality we need to face.

Racism- this is common throughout the whole novel but does it affect my reading? No, it actually helped me realize that women wants to become more beautiful and men like beautiful... more>> women. However it gives us the lesson to be content of what and how we look. I'm not blaming women but also men, we as human beings love to look good at the expense of other's misery.

I may tackle a lot of the issues in the near future after many more chapters, it just seems that racism is the key issue in the novel and the comment section on fringecapybara really helps new readers to understand what is going on. So as far as those bad reviews go it just really shows how close minded they are. <<less

I had dropped this once at the very beginning because the story felt immature to the point I had trouble remembering the characters weren't teenagers, but working adults. But thanks to the reviews, I picked it up again, and I was not disappointed.

It is immature, and it's meant to be. One of the characters realizes it and feels ashamed of their behavior, and the hive mind actions against the MC don't last long. The white lotus halo of the fake sister also loses its luster pretty soon, and only affects... more>> the mother and origML until almost the end. She doesn't get a bad ending, tho, which... Fair, but it feels lacking to have her simply disappear in the background.

The story loses steam at the end and its pretty noticeable, with all sorts of subplots left untouched and I'm not 100% satisfied with how the ML's "heartsickness" got cured, but... Eh. The pacing is still pretty good and the story is entertaining. Face slaps are good. The system was great until it simply disappeared (taking with it the MC's personality).

Spoiler

There's something that left me a bit speechless, though. At one point a social-climbing secretary shows up and she seems like a little beauty, but of course, incomparable to the FL. That's not a problem per se, but the disgust the ML feels isn't directed at her behavior, but at her physical appearance. He compares her to the FL, but the FL is artificially enhanced by the system. So to say... Her beauty is impossible by human standards.

This isn't really a critique as I actually found it hilarious because it conforms to the ML's "pickiness", but it left me thinking that were it not for the system's enhancement, the FL's personality would simply never be enough to win the ML's heart. I don't think the author intended that at all, but it feels like the system is simply a tool to build the perfect match for the ML, and that kind of shoots a hole in their ship.

The hole is not enough to sink it, though.

[collapse]

Also, I know it's basically treason to speak half a word against translators, but isn't turning 20 something chapters into 120 a bit too much?It wouldn't be so bad if they numbered their chapters according to the original (plus however many parts it was divided into). <<less

hello, MTL-er here! This is an ongoing story, as of 121 chapters currently! It's a story of fluff! The plot isn't much, which is great! It's more of the development of feelings of the main couple, with some elements about thr female lead's painting and interactions with others. Anyway, the maincouple is cuteeee! Haha, I really ship them! It's quite amusing too!

I tried to read this novel because the review perk up my attentions.

Unfortunately after I read more than 20 chapters, I found out that this is not my cup of tea at all.

I'm done with this overuse face slapping routine, low IQ and vicious young people--goodness, they should go to church and pray for the God to let those devil stay away from them so as not they will not commit a sin.

Agh. Why do I always encounter an MC who can get everything so easily?! Y'know she's already beautiful but the author seems to plan to make her become the most beautiful in the entire Galaxy and seriously, she's already talented in painting why must needs some kind of skills that can make her godly? ??

I liked that the ML (male lead) and the MC (main character) didn't fall in love right away and that the ML remains skeptical of the MC's intentions, not letting himself fall in, but that's it. The MC of this story is just too much of a goody two shoes, not-like-other-girls kind of girl. I remember rolling my eyes mentally when finding out the backstory of the original. The plan the OG (original) came up with is just so dumb that I don't think my five year... more>> old cousin would approve it. It was most likely made this way to justify the MC taking over the OG's body and to juxtapose how much of a cool gal the MC is in comparison with the OG for not falling in love so easily. But let's be real, that's not the problem. The problem was the OG's IQ.

Another scene I remember disliking was when the MC showed everyone her superior painting skills, it really felt cringey. I didn't sign up for a Mary Sue I wanted to see an underdog who used their system in a smart way!

And let's not forget how terribly sad the OG's backstory was. How she was abused and manipulated out of her money while her step sis gets to live the high life. It is such a cheap way to garner pity!

But that's enough of being frustrated. At the end of the day it's not even close to the worst thing ever, it's just mediocre, below average, bland and thus deserves a 2, maybe 2.3~ <<less

This is a fun novel to read, and as far as dog blood drama and romances go, this one is actually quite healthy and fair. No excessive punishments or immoral revenge, the ends the villains receive give them a chance for a future where they may turn a new page.

The villains are also not too cartoonish and not overly dumb. The upper class is also portrayed to have good people and not too polarizing.

For the romance, I love that the ML isn't domineering in a unhealthy manner. He's quite the... more>> conservative and jealous type, but never crosses a line or lashes out. He uses his influence within the law and is morally good as well. No dubcon.

The MC's painting background also makes the story more interesting. She doesn't become an instant genius businesswoman or socialite, but focuses on her painting and the art circle.

All in all, the story follows the tropes of it's genre but, unlike many others, tries to execute it within morally upright limits. A good light read if you just want to read a dog blood story. <<less

I frickin love this story, ah QAQ Now I regret MTLing this one story in advance because it's still ongoing QAQ

BUT, this really is a nice story. In my opinion, the pace of the story is great. The villain is not too much of an OP, just a normal villain. The MC and ML too, is not an OP character. Yes, the MC has a system, but it's not too much; the system basically guides her to come and shower love to her husband and complete what she didn't have... more>> in her previous life. The system is not a crazy OP one that will just give anything for the MC. Lmao, their interaction is cute too~~

The story really is just my cup of tea. The author works hard o/ translator-san too, work hard o/ <<less

Honestly I quite enjoyed this story. The translation was great.

There's various things that make the story quality drop though.

I quite enjoyed that all the bullies, instead of being face-slapped, straightened their ways and turned over a new leaf. The MC didn't seek revenge or face-slapping, and didn't rise to people trying to get a rise out of her.

I dislike a Mary Sue MC, and it is so painfully written into this story. Somehow she's already a master of painting? The main character wasn't even so old when she died in... more>> her own world, and she already beats a the best painter an elite collector knows? Systems are indeed suppose to allow for cheats, but simply because you put duct tape on a big crack on a window pane does not mean it is fixed. It does fix the Mary Sue character at all. Also the cheats make me uncomfortable. The colorism in Asia has always been prevalent, but I hate how engraved it is in Chinese novels. As the story goes on, the main character's skin gets whiter and whiter. Is it bad to be tan? Dark? Simply writing about this makes me want to drop the review to a 2 star.

Also everybody loves the main character. Everybody. It's basically a must-need for reincarnation stories now, but simply because it's common does not make me any less displeased with it. <<less

and I honestly don't understand everybody's logic, like why would they think it was the MC who "stole" her sister position when she is the true biological daughter???

Ch 30, Li Chengzhen becomes MC's god father.

Ch 51, Chen Kexin asked her where did she get the Holy Water, and MC helped her to get more, and she got a company to make beauty vials using Holy Water recipe.

Ch 60, Grandma Chen becomes MC's god grandmother. Also Chen Kexin: Granma, lol u forgot your real grand daughter? Orz

Ch 79, MC and ML married, MC has no one to send her to the stage since her real parents didn't come (both MC and ML didn't invite them), so Li Chenzheng helps her as her father. MC is really honored that she actually has many rich girl friends, not fake ones, although they're a bit s*upid. At first she thought she would need to rent friends lol. MC got sent gifts by her rich girl friends, Li Yiru who used to hate her send her bracelet, Chen Kexin gifts her stuff she bought with Granma Chen, Zhuo Mi, 2333 and 555 also gifts her. It's a touching chapter.

Ch 88 MC mom and Huo Wencheng asked MC to temporarily divorced for Gu Wenshuang's health - what nonsense! MC told her mom, what filial piety, she never regards Gu Mom and Gu Dad as parents. Gu Mom soon realized that she has missed a lot of things to do with her real daughter and instead has been pampering their fake daughter.

The MC seems to be stuck with a system whose only job is to be pleasing the ML. Unlike a certain review that gave me the impression that the MC was given everything in a silver plate and was hella OP with skills left and right. The MC has a system that makes her do things in order to live. And she is not ungrateful of the ML as she does even if selfish reasons still thinks of the ML's death which will be 2 years from when they met. The ML is not even evil like most CN where the ML get revenge by plotting for the cannon fodder or villain be r*ped for whatever they did to the MC. The MC forgives people who are genuinely sorry for their actions and even gives people the chance to repent. Unlike some CN you have an MC who never gives an ounce of thought that people can change.
MC also seems to fall for the ML early on, and most of the task after the marriage cannot be fulfilled if love or affection is not in the equation. The MC's only ability is to paint and she already has years of training and was close to being good but with the system she could improve. From what I understood from the MLT, even without the systems help she was able to recreate the same feelings into her art.
Not to mention the fact the most of the tasks that needed to be fulfilled were either inevitable or just certain incidents happened to have allowed it to be fulfilled. Eg. When she got the task to get married, the ML was already planning to ask her before the task was issued.

This is a fun novel.

It uses the FL “life” to force her to get close to the emotionally damaged ML.
ML is cold and not close to anyone since he believes they will be hurt if they are close to him.

I will say that the system is more for the ML instead of the FL but the FL never complains. What women doesn’t want to be more beautiful.
Spoiler

These are some of the stuff that the system gives her....

Snow White halo - pure white skin, red lips, black hair with 50% less hair loss - basic Snow White description

a drunk halo (don’t remember the name) - when the system detects the FL drinking alcohol, it gives the perfect affects to the person. Rosy cheeks, misty eyes... basically makes her very edible <cough>

newly web wife halo - makes her extremely edible. System suggest not to use too much or may be a problem for the FL <cough>

It seems the system not only gives her life but it really works to make her the perfect wife.

It also has additional “skills” to increase the FL artistic abilities to smash past her Master class to Grandmaster. The FL uses this to help her break through to a higher level.

Now to unlock them, you have to read. The system does work on the dog feeding thought process.

[collapse]

For most of the people, it really doesn’t go too far being the antagonist.
There are only 1 true antagonist and multiple people who continue to make bad decisions.

Spoiler
  • Fake sister - this person is just too greedy. As long as you put greed as her main motivation, you can see her doing all the things in the novel.
  • FL mother - does not think so she only has eyes on the white wolf daughter (can understand since she took care of the sick daughter all throughout.) She may be the worse off since she truly loved the fake and put all her heart in keeping her alive. This could have closed off what she should have done.
  • FL dad - just another me me type. He doesn’t consider others as long as it benefits him.
  • ML mother and grandmother - they just lost their minds. Not bad but..... really blaming other so they don’t have to think about it.
[collapse]
The reason for people think ML is bad news

Spoiler

As far as I can understand MTL, the father died of an accident. The grandfather died of a broken heart when the father died. So how could this be caused by the son???!?

The mother and grandmother just blames him so they don’t have to face the reality. Really weak in too many ways.

[collapse]

There are no messy assassination, in your face slapping, convoluted plots, and other messy melodramatic angles. This is mainly about how the FL tries to hang onto the ML and gets gifts to live. That is the main plot and that is done in a way that is fun and interesting. The others come in to add to the main plot but never to override what the main story is about.

note: there is fluff and dog food but not overly sweet. The FL is the main victim of trying to make the dog food. Hahaha <<less

The main characters and their synergy is absolutely to die for. So utterly adorable and charming and the supporting characters are also making me squeal by how foolishly cute they can be.
Although the side characters might not play too much of a big role except for supporting, cheering or cannon foddering, they're written well enough to be able to tell apart to a degree.
Time and time again I had to remember the concept of how the story MC transmigrated to is an absolute sh*t show so the author... more>> has written it mostly accordingly so.

MC is like a ray of sunshine breaking the curse of these characters including the original body's owner's set up.
The love story between the two takes a bit to take off, slowly but surely both will fall in love with each other sincerely.
Unlike most common CEO stories wher either ML chases MC like mad to court and eat her tofu or MC chooses to latch onto the big golden thigh out of greed, this one is literally forced by MC's system. Why is it there a system and why did she transmigrate? No idea. It's a comedy :'D
ML is an absolute sweet heart, foul mouth but softest core ever. He never takes advantage of MC, the exemplar gentleman to the point I want to proudly show him off to other MLs and scoff how this is how you properly treat and pamper your lady.
The main characters have a plethora of temperaments, making them seem more realistic and relatable.
The story is very light hearted and comedic, since again, it's original plotline is so cliché it doesn't take much brains for someone with common sense to counter attack the villains. (If you wanna argue that this kind of OG story doesn't exist, I wish the same but sadly they're there, en masse in Josei/shoujo genres...)
And despite CEO ML strikes harshly back against the people that hurt his dear waifu, it was never really out of the realms of law breaking or ruthless. All in all, regardless how OP her system was, none of it would've worked if the ML wasn't an absolute sweetheart and gentleman.

Downside of it is what you could argue that her system skill set and looks enhancements is what drew people including the ML in, everybody else was IQ nerfed by original MC or their author so she had a smooth flower road ahead of her. There are also a lot of plot holes I'd love to go over with but it really doesn't matter, it dominantly entertaining not leaving me much space to dwell over.
It's a fluffy feels-good novel without drawing aggro from the readers with pure angst build up. Really needed a break from those pure angst sorts, feels unhealthy reading too much of them. <<less

Actually this is your typical novel with villainess transmigration, two-faced white lotus FL, tr*sh parents of MC, and the hidden OP character/villain, but I think it was pretty good. The system is perhaps too much of a cheat (the beauty thing) but MC put effort to complete tasks and what the system does is prompt/threaten with death. ML who's germaphobe doesn't really want to interact with the fiancée who was forced on him, but when he realised that MC and him had pretty much same circumstances (aka miserable childhood) he... more>> starts to somewhat take care of her. It wasn't too long, not boring and overall a fun read which I would come back to. Only at C33, which I'm guessing is probably around C10 for the raws (translator had likely split up the raw chapts into 3 parts as each chapt is super short), my first impression of this story was: Beauty and the Beast. It's not entirely the same concept but it's similar in the sense that the ML is like the lonely Beast who craves companionship but is afraid of getting rejected due to his special circumstances.

ML is known as the cursed, harbinger of bad luck, everyone is afraid of him... more>> and thus he leads an isolated life in his mansion with his servants. He has a grumpy nature (his Doctor calls him Grim Huo) but is actually a huge softie. He is sensitive to FL's mood and is a closeted tsundere. I have a soft spot for characters like this...

The missions gives by FL's systems are actually pretty fun. I liked how eating is also considered as gifts by the ML and each meal powers up her life bar a little.

FL is adaptable and happy-go-lucky, she doesn't dwell on unnecessary negativity and is whole heartedly focused on extending her life bar. She's happy to latch onto ML even when he persistently scares her away and made her do chores like a housemaid.

Characters are rather 2 dimensional and the writing isn't groundbreaking phenomenal, but I enjoyed it. This would appeal to people looking for something lighthearted to read. <<less

I personally liked this story a lot. There are certain an ample amount of satisfying face-slapping moments. The MC's system is not crazy OP - as in she could just pull out anything from it to solve any problems that she might be facing. MC was witty and her Chinese painting ability made the story much more interesting.

In addition to the main plot between MC and ML, the MC's interactions with the various supporting characters were interesting as well. :)

I'm not rating this novel as I read many similar plots before (most off the Chinese novels I found online are just some cheap knockoffs of a successful novel, I don't really know which is original and which is the knock off so I may give an unfair rate) and this one didn't give me any surprise or anything that particularly pique my interest.

the story of this novel is pretty nice a little better than some of the ones I read just the usual annoying stuff (iron rules)

    • No matter what she does or the settings of the story, MC is the best (most beautiful, successful, famous,...) one in the world and marry a ML who is the second best one.
    • It is a crime not to love or respect the MC more than anyone including your close relatives and should be punished severely
    • Unreasonable or illogical setting for characters
    • narrow minded, ignorant and shallow world view point
There is a lot of novels about this conflict between the biological and adopted daughter, they have some difference in the settings or POV but they all have similar plotline of the authors trying to make the MC look the most pitiful and gain everyone's sympathy yet they give her everything and make everyone in the story r*tards just to make her look better. I can't understand what is pitiful about about having a cheat (only you have in the world) that can help you get anything you want, an id*ot ML that can do anything for the MC, and brainless sidekicks that just follow the ALWAYS RIGHT MC

Edit:

dropped after reading c62 MTL reason,

Ps: All this beyond saving id*ot did was to trying to hit on the MC as prank. Although this ack is a bit low, he didn't break the law nor hurt the MC in any way. He didn't even touch her.

- R*tard grandmother blame the MC's parents for caring for the foster daughter (they raised for 20 years) and ignore the MC who is their biological daughter, yet she takes the MC (a person she only met 2 times) as her granddaughter and treats her better than her biological granddaughter [hehe]

- R*tard friend leave her "fake" friends who always ask for something in return for the noble MC who just got close to her to complete the system task and she (R*tard friend) even believe that the MC did all that for a stranger she (mc) just met because of real friendship (How touching [hehe])

The MC's beauty and excellence is just fake made by the system and story gets more and more r*tarded and unbearable. I also don't know what the writer hold against people with heart disease

The boss is a tsundere and the MC just keeps digging holes for herself. She'll misunderstand something the boss says as cute or think that he likes a painting she made when it's the opposite. It's so cute. Usually I don't like misunderstandings and even though this sounds like it's full of them, it's really not. They get mixed up a lot but they actually talk to each other so it doesn't get too bad too fast. I really like the novel so far! It's funny and easy to binge... more>> in one sitting. <<less
