Such a good read! Other reviews are already so well written regarding plots and writing style so I'll just say I loved the romance between the main characters and their story. I was a bit hesitant to read based on the MC and ML being adoptive son and adoptive father, but the story line was written in such a way that it wasn't a problem at all for me.

I went in thinking there wouldn't being much romance based on reviews, but the romance was pretty satisfying and was sprinkled throughout.

I love this novel. I honestly love this novel. I've read 3 novels from priest and although my brain is not big enough for any of them, this one I can actually understand and I love gu yun so much wtfff. It was so funny when gu yun thought he was the top but actually got topped lmao.

I tried so hard to finish it, but my tiny brain said no. I dropped it after they got together because I couldn’t understand anything anymore. It’s really good if you have the brain power. The age gap made me itchy, but I dealt with it and they were cute ig. Thank the f*cking gods that gu yun didn’t fall in love with him until he was a mature adult or else I would have dropped this right off the bat. I have been reading danmei for more than 1 year and I read this book 1 year ago. Still my most favourite danmei out there and my love for Gu Yun is just rising everyday more and more. And ChangGu literally is one of the best BL couple with such a healthy relationship.

What is love? ChangGu is.

Couldn't agree more.

And Priest is still the best danmei writer in fact not only as a danmei writer but as a writer she is amazing in every field proud priest and proud spl fan.

This was utterly spectacular. The politics, the war, the tidbits of romance and adorable sprinkled in makes this extraordinary. Priest's writing really is quite beautiful and hats off to the wonderful translator for their hard work translating this masterpiece. Tbh, I was pretty intimidated with all the talk of politics in this, but surprisingly enough, I enjoyed it immensely even though some of the more complicated antics of the court quite literally floated over my head.

I'd say it was because of the characters, Chang Geng and Gu Yun especially. Watching... more>> them overcome hardships and gruesome scheming all for maintaining peace in the country they all dearly loved was heart-wrenching. Especially when some annoying disloyal good-for-nothing scum were doing there very best to ruin all their hard work, just for some measly coin. Ugh it was so satisfying watching Chang Geng take them down with nothing but his glorious mind. *applauds*

Now for what made me love this novel so much more was these two coming to terms with their feelings towards each other (well mostly Gu Yun, poor guy was traumatised). And when I say this is a slow-burn, I mean sloooooooooww, which explains why some readers might not enjoy this as much, with the addition of all the politics and war strategies, but let me tell you, CHANGGU IS LOVE ❣ so keep pushing through if you feel bored. A well-written, detailed-plot, war politics story. The war and machine steampunk aspect was a big part of the story and wasn't really my thing, which took the 1 star off the bat.

Honestly the plot wasn't overly complicated, everything happened step by step. It's just given in great details, so I found it tiresome to read after awhile. Personally, I'm not a fan of war stories and although I do like court politics, this has a more serious tone and very little humor (unlike Golden stage or Those Years in Quest... more>> of Honour Mine) and so it was tougher to endure reading it. I had to spread this novel out and read it over many many days, especially the first half. More things are happening in the second half so it gets a little more interesting. I pressed on and finished the story because the overall plot was actually kinda interesting and the couple was cute tho!

MC is kinda cute in a possessive way, while ML is shameless. But because this novel doesn't really have any humour, don't expect the shamelessness to shine through. It's merely a character trait. Their dynamic was quite interesting because they were both kinda silent in the way they cared for each other and I can feel quite bittersweet at times. (Don't worry, happy ending!!!)

Overall, it's just not a light nor mindless read, so don't expect to read it quickly unless you're used to reading legit history books or something. Interesting and well written so people who like war or mecha stories would like it, but not my cup of tea. Worth giving a try though!

One of my favourite novels. I laughed, cried, suffered anxiety and almost every other emotions I could think of. - With all the dramas, twists and turns. The CP are strong, powerful, endearing and will remain in my heart for a very long. This was only possible because the translation was - Just truly awesome. Thank you so much author, translators and all the fans that traveled the journey with me. ❤️

um, I dont even know how to write a review for this novel. First of all, Priest is such anamazing wirter, I can see why she's so respected in the c novels community, not only danmei.

Sha Po Lang is a very complex story about a small guy (chang geng) cursed by his aunt, he's of mixed blood which means he's a royal but he's also half barbarian. He has this sickly and fragile yifu. but things aren't that easy. his yifu is the powerful Marquis of order Gu Yun. And... more>> chang geng has to grow up to save himself, save the country and save his yifu.

actually, the novel aint bad at all, but it's very complex, the politics and militar affairs are most of the novel. the love story is touching, but it's not the center of the plot you know. so if you're looking for heavy romance and smut... this is probably not the novel for you.

Priest loved to develop the world of great liang. All the inventions, politics and everything else is so well detailed, so carefully structured, she worked a lot on it.

Personally, I got very frustrated by the politics, my only motivation was seeing chang geng and gu yun's love story, but it was not so satisfactory bc theyd see each other like for one chapter and 10 are just about the battles, the strategies, the complots, etc.

and dont get me wrong, I think it's a very heartwarming romance, it's about the yearning, the selfless love, it's about protecting and missing each other, which is why I loved it, but I wouldn't say is my favorite.

and the side characters, wow, I love cao chunhua <3 I wanted to see more of them, also shen yi and miss chen, liao ran, ge chen, they're very interesting characters that couldve been developed even more <<less

Very nice!! As expected of Priest!

Heads up that this is like 70% politics and 30% romance, even so, the romance part is heart wrenchingly beautiful even though they get interrupted a quite number of times.

The plot is really thought out well. Not lighthearted and there are some moments that will make your heart sink.

MC is delicate, with the Bone of Impurity in him. His nightmares are endless with only yifu as his beacon. His thoughts are along the lines of 'I'm unworthy', which is not unexpected as the Bone of... more>> Impurity makes one a monster. Nevertheless, I love how he manages to be stable for his yifu, not wanting to worry him. I also love his dedication to him. All the yearning and sadness, , , rlly makes my heart ache, but at least! They ended up together till death do them apart.

ML is carefree, smart and maybe a little bit flirty. He went thru a lot in his childhood, like MC. In a way, the way he fell for MC is because of MC's wants to bring peace to the nation, which is also his dreams. I just love him very much.

The novel is very good, definitely worth a try. There were some moments that were too heavy and my brain can't handle the information. Still! It was worth it! <<less

I loved the Story and world building. All the schemes that were brought together to one final upsurp of the throne were rlly well thought out.

I also liked the characters and their portayal eg. Gu yuns mischivousnes and chang geng acting spoiled towards his lover. I loved how they seemed so devoted towards their significant other.

They were also such a power couple!!

What I rlly didn’t like was the writing style when these political topics were mentioned. Somehow they worded some things so weirdly and all the names were so confusing at times. Way more confusing than other wuxia novels.

Also the way that the ML is the adoptive father of the ML is extremely weird. I mean ok they have an age gap of abt 7 years and it only got to romantic feelings after MC was 20 but it doesn’t change the fact that ML knew the MC at 14 years old and rlly saw himself as a father figure. What makes it worse is that MC enjoys to call him yifu at times...

came for the sexy monocle man, stayed for the plot and romance

10/10 highly recommended! I went in not expecting a lot of romance, but I was pleasantly surprised. Top world-building and I really enjoyed the continuous relationship development. This isn't a light read and it took me several weeks to finish this novel.

I don't know how Priest does this, but every novel of hers that I have read is fantastic. And this one isn't an exception either.

The plot is heavy; the past of both MCs and MLs is tragic; there are a lot of moments when you can't help but worry about the future of the characters; yet it is extremely pleasant reading. You enjoy every moment of the reading. Maybe because the pace of story telling is perfect, or because not only the main characters but side characters too are interesting,... more>> or because even in scary death and life situations, some characters act shamelessly and won't stop teasing other people (yes, I am speaking about ML) and lighten the mood, or because it is well-written - I really can't tell, but the story is brilliant and definitely worth reading.

The plot is really good; Priests created a whole new world; the MC and ML characters are something out of the ordinary; and their relationship is sweet and special.

If you have read Priest's other works, you already know how talented she is, so I won't write many words about her skills. In short, I definitely recommend this novel. <<less

Both Chang Geng and Gu Zixi could've been villains in their own right but the path they chose for each other is just kddkjffhbjknjf I love this novel

It is a good novel. The plot is good. I like the steampunk theme. I wish Priest's elaborated a little more regarding the machines. The characters are okay, no annoying or s*upid people. It is just that I'm kinda not emotionally invested with the characters. In another words, I can't empathized with the protagonists or other characters when I'm reading it. Compare it with other Priest's novel, I rather like Silent Reading and Faraway Wanderers.

i really liked this novel by Priest! This is the second one I've read by this author, and the plot is 10/10. The world building and description is on point, allowing you to vividly imagine the scenarios because there is a lot of attention paid to details. As I have mostly read danmei that revolves around cultivation and wuxia, (I have an undying obsession for these novels, it's a serious problem) so this one was really eye-opening to me since it is heavy on the subject of wars; a... more>> realistic storyline!

for the main leads, their love is not so much of a slow burn, just that this novel focuses more on the plot, and the romance part is a nice touch. Their lives does not revolve around each other, whereby either one has to rely on the other 24/7 by being together in every chapter etc. The thing is, I actually like the character development of both leads since it shows more of personal growth and bettering oneself than simply staying stagnant in their current personality. I'm glad they were not written as people who were flawless and perfect, but rather ones whom also has their individual weaknesses and strong points. And that is completely okay and humane!

overall, although I am usually a sappy gal for sweet and loving romance in novels, but the plot in this was so good that I could not stop reading. The suspense in each chapter is *french kiss* highly recommend to peeps who are into intense and action filled historical novels :) <<less

Honestly, it was a bit hard to complete this novel because some parts became boring. It was also somewhat overwhelming trying to understand what was going on between the nations and the different laws that were established. But there were many moments I enjoyed and laughed at, the main couple is quite an interesting dynamic IMO. I loved the ending too !! I felt like a great spectator watching the rise and fall of dynasties.

This is very well written. This novel not only contains romance but heavy with politic and war strategy. Very entertaining, especially for you who already so bored with smut filled story.

My only disappointment is that the emperor (both father and son) got away too easily with their crime.
