Dong Jiahui, the daughter of the Dong family, was kicked out of the house by the Lu family because she had been married for three years and was unable to get pregnant. Dong Jiahui, who felt ashamed, jumped into the river in search of death. Immediately after she was rescued, her soul also changed.

The Dong family’s Jiahui was five miles away from the Shanghe Village. Zhao Donglin’s wife was an educated youth who left her two children to go back to the city. In order to take care of the children, Zhao Donglin, who was about to become a battalion commander, retired to the countryside.

“This damned little bit*h cried and shouted to marry us, to let her marry our Donglin. Now she doesn’t even care about her children and wants to go back to the city!”

For the six-month-old girl, Yingbao, Zhao Donglin wants to give his two children a stepmother. He refused the introduction of 17 or 18 people who were matched with him and finally chose the infertile Dong Jiahui. Zhao Donglin thought that since Dong Jiahui couldn’t have a baby, she would certainly treat Heidan and Yingbao as her own child.

He inquired and found out that Dong Jiahui was a woman with a submissive personality, and such a woman leads a stable life. As long as she treats the children well, he will treat her well for the rest of his life.

On the wedding night, Dong Jiahui finally discovered the secret of the original owner’s infertility. It turned out that she was still a v*rgin!

I'm annoyed because I hesitated reading this for the longest time because of CasBrin's review. But now that I've read the whole novel, I'm confused. Did they really read the novel? It's like they were talking about a whole different story.

Spoiler
  1. ML didn't keep silent to "keep the peace". In fact, he was the one who suggested to separate the family. In the beginning, he did ask his brother to control his sister-in-law when she wronged MC. But he also said that there would be consequences next time. And he was true to his word. He asked for separation the next time sister-in-law made trouble. It's not even "three strikes, you're out". He only warned sister-in-law once.
  2. "Sister-in-law tried to correct herself" yeah right. It was clear that she so entitled that she couldn't understand why people are so upset about her mistakes. It was also written that she didn't have any remorse at all. And she didn't "discuss a lot" with her husband (ML's brother). The "discussion" was more like a one-sided gossip about MC.
  3. MC is not selfish at all. She's a stepmother who was married in to take care of the kids, which she did well by the way. She made clothes for her husband, her stepchildren, her mother-in-law, her father-in-law, and her sister-in-law (ML's sister). She also taught her sister-in-law (ML's sister) cooking and embroidery. And when the college examinations was announced, she was insistent that the whole family go to the provincial capital for the family's development. I don't think that was selfish at all. She knew which way the wind was blowing and she wanted the whole family to ride on it.
  4. "ML made MC pregnant to prevent her from studying" didn't effing happened at all. She got pregnant, gave birth, and THEN the college examinations was announced. She then convinced ML and sister-in-law (ML's sister) to take the exams with her and the whole family moved to the provincial capital after they passed. MC and ML then agreed not to have a child while they were studying but MC never got pregnant even after they graduated anyway. The "ML controlling MC using her pregnancy because he was traumatized from his first wife" sounds like a whole different novel to me.
  5. They really made the first wife sound good. "Divorcing the husband to pursue her dream". They probably forgot that she was cheating on ML with another guy who she thinks can support her in the capital. There's also the matter of abandoning her children at a very young age. Is it really that admirable to pursue your dream despite using unscrupulous means and abandoning responsibilities?
[collapse]

The story itself is okay. 3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. It's nice for leisure reading. There is not much drama, no misunderstandings and conflicts are resolved quickly.

So this started out pretty good. The ML was a rare respectful partner. But that changed after getting married.

Spoiler

They agree not to have children for 3 years. But he decides he wants another child and so without her knowledge he avoids the contraceptive measures they'd been using and gets her pregnant.

His marriage views are actually really traditional. I get he was hurt before, but he wants to use the baby to make her forget about a career or further education. He thought with the baby she would be unable to go and study.

At first you blame the ex wife. But her leaving is now very understandable. He was never there, all his money went to his mother, and he just expected her to be a small house wife. I'm glad she could stand up for her dreams and leave. I wish the MC had held out another 2 years waiting for the college examinations rather than getting married so quickly.

[collapse]

He looks after her on the surface, but he will be a filial son and wrong her to maintain family peace until it's at breaking point.

The second sister in law Zheng and her husband are painted as inferior to the main couple, but they discuss a lot with each other. The sister in law actually tries to correct her selfish nature, but her only friend is purposefully filing her up and saying bad things about the MC.

The MC is selfish. And that's fine. She makes it clear that as a 21st century person she is always looking after herself best. The author made it clear that the difference between the sisters in law is that the MC knows how to speak and play to get what she wants, while the second sister in law is too straight forward for that. I liked this! But later the author just decided to make the second sister in law cannon fodder.

The MC's cheap mother is great. I love her. The MC's mother in law is also great. She makes it very clear to her son's that they are n9t allowed to hit women and I respect this. <<less

I will be writing a lengthy review. Mostly, I liked this story although it dragged sometimes. I'll point out mostly the plot points (p&c) and my final overall opinion.

MC & ML: Dong Jiahui, Zhao Donglin

Children: Zhao Zhuojun (Heidan), Zhao Xinyi (Yingbao) and Zhao Zhuorui (Fangfang?)

Zhao Family: Zhao Manzhu (father), Zhang Qiao'er (mother), Zhao Caixia (elder sister), Zhao Donghe (second brother), Zhao Meixiang (youngest)

Pros:

Spoiler

• The characters are written well enough that you can remember everyone perfectly and notice the positive developments over the story.

• For in-laws, the Zhao family was refreshing to read about for a story set in the 1970s. From being rural villagers making ends meet and living simply, they gradually embrace the change and become wealthy with a little guidance from MC and ML.

• Mother Zhao is the mouthpiece for the Zhao's. Although stubborn and a worrywart, her character is just likeable! At least for me. A great grandmother (and mother) that treats her family well.

• MC isn't overly generous where she shouldn't be and perfectly generous to the right relatives. Unlike some stories *cough cough* rebirth to the 80s

• ML is okay in the first half. After the family separation, my impression of him improves.

• The children were so cute! Best part of the story is MC's genuine affection for her stepchildren. Especially when Zhao Zhuojun recognized her as his mother.

• Personally, my favorite scene was when Heidan reflected on MC always cherishing him as her own son even years later (broke me when he believed he didn't deserve her love since he was abandoned by his bio mother.) Finally, he called her mom for the first time and they both cried at the emotional breakthrough.

• Their nieces and nephews were treated well! Even if it took a little time.

• The societal change in China made more sense the way it was explained in this story.

• Author gave Zhao Donghe the chance to find his own success like Donglin and Meixiang so his son can live well, especially after the messy divorce.

• MC doesn't forget to help her maiden family (Dong).

• Zhao Meixiang is my favorite character with her own little arc. Self explanatory when you read it.

• The adoptive god/grandparents are my favorite elders in the story. Found family is always a cute plot element!

• Author didn't forget to give the remaining Zhao sibling the opportunity to shine as well.

• In general, the steady rise in the Zhao and Dong families is sweet to read near the end as they all deserve it.

[collapse]

Cons:

Spoiler

• The ML was really annoying for how much he tolerated ZDH's s*upid wife. It took him too long considering the first time he found out what she said to Heidan.

• Family separation took too long. Should've happened right after remarriage.

• The ML never properly embraced Heidan or gave him much affection as a child which was irritating. I expected MC to encourage him. Sure, when he went to university ML finally explicitly said he was proud of him but still. Why? He could easily embrace and dote on Fangfang but not Heidan? Irritating.

• The author never gave Zhao Donghe his deserved second wife (at least where I've read) when he deserved a second chance at love. His son definitely deserved a new mom considering he accepted his mom being 'dead' (I even thought for some reason he would end up with Meixiang's bridesmaid since she was introduced so suddenly at the end.)

• Why did the author make the sister-in-laws so annoying? Sure, I like a little conflict since the story was dragging but they were just to make MC and Meixiang angels for their families. Like aight, I guess.

• The romance for the main couple falls flat after reading Meixiang's romance with her boyfriend (husband) and it was explored in a handful of chapters.

• I wish there were more moments with the children. Suddenly, months or a year would pass without cute moments with the children. I'm surprised the author didn't flesh out MC and Heidan's relationship more with at least some more skinship.

• Personally, I didn't feel very attached to their youngest child since he was so glossed over. MC pregnant, MC gives birth, MC takes university exam, youngest child is suddenly a toddler. Even the last chapter (MTL) didn't make much sense. He seemed unimportant compared to Heidan and Yingbao.

• The ex-spouses shouldn't have been mentioned if we wouldn't get a proper conclusion. Did MC's ex's family die out? Did ZDH's ex ever try to seek out their son when she heard of their success? Did ML's ex try to approach Yingbao when she grew up? Why didn't Meixiang's crush seek her out after she was engaged to at least clear the air? I expected a clear rejection but nah lol. Though not important, I thought there would be conclusive closure for those minor characters.

• MC's career didn't make sense to me. Considering her skill with sewing and fashion, I thought the author would explore upon that and MC would run a fashion empire considering she had prowess in business on different occasions. Nope, MC just took on a simple job involving her English specialty.

• Father Zhao was so flat as a character. He was only mentioned less than ten times I think and it was odd since he was the patriarch??? He stayed in the village alone for many years and he didn't complain?? He wasn't even mentioned much after the last Zhao child married and the grand children grew up.

• The university arc dragged a little. Yes, MC and ML are legends at university. No need to expand on it too deeply. At least for me. It would've been nice to switch to the children for a small arc for a change since at this point we barely know the youngest child and Yingbao is a child with thoughts and opinions at this point.

[collapse]

Basically, the main story was good. The writing sometimes skipped over potential sweet moments with the children (which is what drew me to the story) and over explained the business prospects. Of course, if you prefer the business side of the plot, great!

I merely wished some of the plot points were explored upon or concluded cleanly so I wouldn't still have questions.

I think the story would've been more interesting had the author taken the time to gradually have the main romance develop at a believable pace, postponed the pregnancy, included more child moments and wrote in more side characters. There were almost no outsiders it was all family oriented which was a little crowded and occasionally boring. Finally, I appreciate the author slowly implementing a more modern ideal for Meixiang, Zhao Caixia's eldest daughter, and Yingbao to take their time with marriage and prioritizing finding their self worth and career. A breath of fresh air. I nitpick a lot but this is definitely one of the better time travel / remarriage / decade novels written. Everyone is happy and no one is left behind. <<less

Gonna be generous and rate this 4 because CasBrin's rating and comments on the novel does not make sense.

First of all, Wang Mei (the first wife) is not someone to look up to and say, "Look, be like her and pursue your dreams". No! She is a homewrecker.

Plain and simple.

She not only destroyed her family, she wanted to be the third party in her ex's relationship, and wanted him to divorce his wife. Then when he didn't, she married someone for convenience. And when she can't have a child with... more>> her current husband, she goes back to her traumatized eldest son and demands he recognize her. Then she btches about her youngest daughter, whom she left as a newborn, not recognizing her! Entitled much?

If I see this kind of person in real life, I would hadouken her face.

Anyway, I won't dispute all of CasBrin's comments because Paperballoon already did that, and did it very well. Just hated Wang Mei's guts.

Back to the novel, first part is interesting, but after the exams it became boring. Like, so boring. Story flat lined from there and even Meixiang's love life can't revive it. I don't even know why.

An okay novel nevertheless. <<less

I don't usually post a comment but it's in response to one of the comments already posted: I really have a hard time understanding how someone can twist a story so much 1-) according to him our MC after having unilaterally decided to wait at least 3 years before having a child decided to stop the contraceptive and put him pregnant voluntarily without warning her) So already Bullsh*t and then he is clearly specified that they were all agreed to wait to have children afterwards, if he did not use... more>> a lot of contraceptive means other than withdrawal then when he stopped doing it you cannot really not to say he did it without her consent she would have clearly noticed and she wasnt full of it for the whole year he did it before she got pregnant 2-) you cannot blame him that it is hoped that having a child will make him want to leave his family to go to the city knowing that: a) it was before the resumption of examine not be confirmed, b) she had not informed him of her intention to move all this family to the city when they were studying and c) when she told him about his project he not only accepted it but also helped convince the rest of his family. And finally 3) the dumbest comment: his ex-wife Wang Mei had a lover in town from the start, only married our ML with the intention of joining said lover in town later, and left ML that to join her lover in town and it is even clearly specified to us that she had hoped that ML would live a miserable life after their divorce and despite the fact that she had already remarried, when she saw her living conditions she had suddenly wanted to start again with her life and that of the children she had abandoned, so NO I really can't see how she should inspire pity <<less

This is recommend if you are into typical countryside slice of life, OP protagonist, familial interactions and poor to rich development. If you're looking for dog blood drama face slapping, childcare, business management or farming, this isn't for you. Also for those hesitating because of that one star review given by that Cas-whatever-name that for some odd reason got 26 likes, don't hesitate. That is poppyc*ck and other comments have refuted it. Don't even know where he/she drew those conclusions from. Some clarifications below (super long rant so ignore if... more>> you aren't affected by the review) :

Spoiler

1. There was no forcing or pregnancy (the ML a wants a baby but did not force it. The pregnancy was an accident. We all know accidents happen even with modern day contraceptives what's to say in the 1970s)

With that one line that says he kinda wants kids Cas-what's-his-name decided that it was a conspiracy. Subdue the woman with the baby and keep her locked up! There was NOTHING that hinted that he wanted to stop her from studying. The time the MC brought up the college entrance exam for the first time which resulted in him kinda doubting her was because he thought it it would be impossible for the state to let married/ older people take the exam so what's the point of talking about it. After the policy was announced, they barely had to discuss for him to agree to her dreams.

2. He never blamed the ex-wife for wanting to pursue her dreams but blamed her for pursuing her dreams at the expense of their kids. That woman literally threw her kids away and hooked up with another man for benefits. Yes he wasn't around most of the time but if they had discussed properly, maybe they could have worked something out. She just clamoured for a divorce in a letter and just up and left with no regards for her family. This was her choice. She decided to pursue the ML then abandon their family when she changed her mind. BRUH! Where's your sense of responsibility?

3. What is that nonsense about the ML looking after the MC on the surface but will wrong her to maintain the peace unless it's at the breaking point? Bruh he takes action every time the MC suffers a grievance. It is literally written that he is cool about everything but his wife is his inverse scale.

4. Don't get me started bout that sister-in-law of the ML... I have no words. No words. Anyone who has read the novel can confirm that her character set up is the petty and jealous brain dead canon fodder. Don't even know how this fellow reader came to his/her conclusion. Also the fact that she could get worked up and influenced by her 'friend' is also saying something about her. The author even wrote that even if they were many other people in the village to talk to, she enjoyed talking to this friend because she says all the things she wants to hear. That friend is also another piece of work but let's not dive into it.

5. The MC is selfish... She ignores that self-entitled sister in law and helps everyone else in her family that don't hate her and that makes her selfish... ? Go be Buddha! Help your enemies! Fighting!

Sister in law tries to correct her selfish ways... HAHAHA! Your world views...

6. Also the fact that the MC can speak to get what she wants, well that called having high EQ which is (to me) part of her OP protagonist set up. If you wanna be petty, do it behind closed doors. The author also wrote that the MC only states her dissatisfaction to her husband when they were alone and not in front of others. In a culture that expects one to respect their elders, that's the polite thing to do.

Anyways, this commentor has slightly different outlook on things so take their comment with a pinch of salt

[collapse]

✅ Super supportive, reasonable and caring families

✅ Brainless-petty-jealous relatives

✅ OP protagonist (sewing skills, cooking, temperament and EQ, and I guess history knowledge)

Overall a good read. Typical slice of life from the countryside to the city kinda thing. This is my first 1970s era novel so it was real interesting for me to read about the changes that occurred (but it was a wee bit difficult to follow along with the changes due to my lack of knowledge of the history of the change). The entire story flow is as followed (warning almost entire plot ahead) :

Spoiler

MC woke up at her natal home, sews to earn some money, interaction with natal family and some conflict with second sister-in-law, ML and his problems introduced through out, ML sees MC and vibes with her, blind dates and proposes (initial disagreement from mother due to MC being divorced), marriage, trying to win over the stepchildren (not much about it though), getting along well with the mother-in-law and sister-in-law (ML's younger sister), faces jealousy from sister-in-law (ML's younger brother's wife), more conflict, MC got preggo, brother-in-law officially divorced off the vicious wife, gives birth, MC takes college entrance exam with ML and sister-in-law (ML's younger sister), passes, rents a place from some college professors, entire family moves to the city, earns more money to support themselves while studying, at one point recognises the professors as godparents, sis-in-law graduates and goes to the county to teach and blablabla romance, introduce other sis-in-law (ML's older sister) to do business and asks her natal family to do some land buying and planting, everyone gets rich together, graduates and being successful, the end

[collapse]

The extras are really nice! It gives an insight on the later years and how the children grow up to be.

This is one of those rare novels where the MC's family is super supportive and where the in-laws are decent. The MC's new family places heavy emphasis familial ties and is reasonable in the face of disagreements. But, one thing that I thought could have been better is the interaction with the kids. Even though the MC said that she cared for her stepchildren like her own, I felt that the way it was written made it seem like there was a divide and coldness between them namely with her stepson, like she was just fulfilling a responsibility with no motherly love (... ? If that makes sense). There were no hugs or kisses (I mean I kinda get it because he is older and all but there were so many moments where I thought a hug would have shown more depth of emotions and progress in the relationship) especially during the very end where he officially recognised her.

Overall, really pleasant read. Recommend for slice of life lovers! <<less

I didn't like how the female lead didn't even sympathies with the original one feelings whom she occupied her body. You can say that you don't understand her, but you can't despises her just because she was a kind one!
Plus! How can a whole household in the countryside don't even know how to patch or sewing the holes on clothis and need to paid mony to the tailor in the town to do that in the 70s! Is not it just to make the female lead shaine! The author at least had to find something that make more sence! There is her mother and three sisters-in-law but they all don't know how to use needle and thread, and need the female lead to do that for them?!

Interesting premise, poor execution.

I usually don't have problems with slow-paced slice of life novels with little to no conflict. But this one became a bit boring as I read further.

My issues:

  • Mainly the poor translation. It's straight out of an MTL. It gets worse chapter each chapter. Sometimes, even quotation marks to indicate dialogues are not included.
  • The story has wasted potential. It almost always looks at the surface level of things. Everyone seems like they're one-dimensional cannon fodder.
  • I don't find the MC interesting. Her being a "transmigrator" is just a cheap trick to explain some abilities that she have. She doesn't seem to have inner struggles adjusting in the 70s and although she has to accept it immediately, it's not supposed to be accepted after a few paragraphs.
  • The ML was fine at first. But at this point, I think he's just another guy who "wants to protect the little lotus". The execution is not great. It made him look like a cheap guy who decided to treat his wife better just because she's a virg*n.
  • The interaction between the ML & MC is very bland. I don't see any chemistry except for the fact that people view them as some sort of perfect people in the village.
This novel has wasted it's potential. There should me more to the novel but it can't... more>> keep me interested to wait for things to happen. <<less

Definitely a bit of a slow burn even though they agree to get married and have feelings quickly. Thought the relationship vibes were good but now it’s a bit icky for me. She is so willing to serve... and always downplaying her efforts saying stuff like “oh cleaning, cooking, sewing, and raising the children is literally nothing significant compared to working in the fields!” Like um no. Yes, some people love to do those things but it still is difficult and takes patience and effort. If you are fine with... more>> traditional “wifely” values then you will probably like this. <<less

I had quite a bit of expectations for this novel due to the high ratings (kinda) so I went into the novel thinking that it would be a good read. I was honestly really disappointed.

Let me list the things I liked and disliked about the novel.

Spoiler

What I liked:

1. The novel had a good premise. I'm currently really into the transmigrate to the 60's, 70's, 80's and get rich trope. There are also kids involved which made me more interested because I looove stories with kids.

2. The ML was understanding and affectionate to the FL and didn't have the overbearing characteristics that can mostly be found in CN novels. It was nice reading about him.

3. I like the FL. She's smart, she knows what she wants and never lets other people step on her. She has firm morals that are not easily shaken. She also has a huge capacity for love, as shown with how she treated her stepkids like they're her own. She also has a good heart. She made sure no one was left behind in both her in-laws and maternal family. She carried all of them to success.

4. Her In-laws are good people. I have read too many novels where the in-laws keep f*cking up the FL's life by being overbearing and meddling with her life, so the Zhao's (Especially grandma and Meixing) gave me a good impression.

5. Meixing and Zhenfeng's relationship. Reading about them made me feel so sweet and giddy because Zhenfeng is really charming. They had a good start and their courtship was believable. They didn't go on one blind date and decided to get married but actually got to know each other before settling. Reading about them made me feel more emotions than reading about the FL and ML.

What I didn't like:

1. How the author handled the storyline with the kids. It all just felt... rushed. They didn't show any significant development in Yingbao and Heidan's character. There were snippets of Heidan's emotions and vulnerability, but they're just that. They get adressed at some point but I wanted to know more, and I didn't. See, the characters always sing praises to the FL saying how well she treated the kids and always gave them the best, but it's never actually SHOWN in the novel. I don't get to read about how she helps Heidan with her studies, I don't get to read about how she takes care of Yingbao, I don't get to read about how her relationship with the kids developed and it was frustrating. The moments where she interacts with the kids and we ACTUALLY get to read about it is far in between. I don't want the ML harping about how well the FL treats the kids and how he's so lucky to have married her, I want to READ ABOUT IT.

2. The FL and ML's relationship. There isn't anything to nitpick about how they treat each other really. But ah, how do I say this? They were so bland. The way their relationship developed was fine, they had a good relationship, they had mutual respect for each other and they most obviously love one another. They just bored me to death. Meixing and Zhenfeng at most had 12 chapters of screen time but their story was 10 times more interesting than the main couple. They never have these moments that show how deep their relationship actually is. They say the love each other, they have s*x (multiple times), they talk but it just doesn't have that much of an appeal.

3. The long ass university arc. They just highlighted how amazing and perfect the FL and ML are and honestly didn't contribute much to the plot. Nothing happened there.

4. How the FL and ML didn't go into business. Honestly, the ML majored in economics, they did that fiasco with the cinema, the FL had skills for it, hell, the author highlighted how good she was at making clothes and all that so how could I NOT expect them to go into business? I was expecting some garment business or something but instead she becomes a translator and ML just goes back to the commune. It was anticlimactic. Everyone else became some sort of tycoon while they decided to do public service. The eldest sister built a hotel. The second brother had a mining business. The Dong guys went into agriculture. Hell, that one village head became rich due to real estate. I don't have anything against their chosen professions but I wasn't satisfied with where they ended up. They could've done more.

5. They ended up living seperately due to the FL's job. ML went back to the village and FL stayed in the county.

[collapse]

It started of well but I just ended up a tad bit dissatisfied with how it ended. These are just my thoughts and maybe other people can enjoy the story, but I personally found reading it a waste of time. <<less

3.5 ☆

There were notable parts but towards the middle half it felt a chore to read it. Maybe, it's because I've read a lot of 70s novel that this one just doesn't intrigue me.

I rounded it up to a 4 because it's still a decent read.

So, FL is incredible at cooking and intelligent. ML is a soldier. Romance part with FL always sore 🥲 I guess something different in this novel is the POVs of the siblings of ML and their journey. Childcare is soso. 🤔 Making money and enriching... more>> the whole fam... Some drama with the in-laws..

Overall, it's a nice and readable. <<less

MC got shy shy shy at the beginning. But later not. Everything went smooth sailing, the later story was a bit sped up.

Overall, a quite nice slice-of-life story.

I read this story three times over the years and I still cry when I read its ending where Heidan calls the FL his mom for the first time.

This is a feel good story about a great FL living a very good life after transmigration from our times into 1970s. She becomes a woman whose husband's family returned her to her maiden family because she did not get pregnant in three years time. How could she? Her husband due to the "malfunction" in his nether regions never touched her!

So she marries again, this time to a man who cannot leave her alone. Every night all night long, lol. He really loves her.

Both her family and her husband's family are amazing, all of them. And she is simply a perfect Chinese wife, daughter-in-law and a mother to her husband's kids. She sews and embroyders, she cooks, she is wonderful with kids, in-laws and godparents, her entire family thrives, goes to university and become super wealthy thanks to our little FL's efforts who is like an Energizer Bunny, always so busy, so caring.

In the entire novel there are maybe two or three maliciously spoken characters, all three young females, and they are all quickly dealt with.

[collapse]

It is not that well written and the last twenty chapters are worthy of skipping them altogether, but it is still good. I read this when I want something very simple and positive with the message that people are good, life is good, life and family will only get better and better from now on and we shall all work for it together. <<less

This gives a smooth reading experience. It's pure Slice of Life. There's no black market speculation which is nice since that's a typical move of MCs in these stories. I don't get why other reviewers say MC is selfish when she's a perfect daughter-in-law/wife/mother??? Actually, that's the reason why I did not give this 5 stars. There's no character development for the characters. MC is already a perfect DIL/wife/mom that she doesn't even need any character development which is disappointing imo. The only one who had character development was their... more>> eldest son (MC's stepson), but that was not that amazing of a development either. Character development aside, I did not find any other problems while reading. Although this could have been better if other characters' stories were explored more. There's a lot of characters, but we only see some of them from time to time. <<less

First and foremost, a big thank you to the translator for doing their best on this novel; it was great!

I hardly ever review these stories; however this is a special case in that, seeing so many negative reviews about the ML and his treatment of the FL really scorned me from trying this novel. And this ML is leagues better than most of the transmigration stories I have read.

Spoiler

In the reviews I read; the spoilee stated that the ML intentionally made the FL pregnant so that she couldn't take the college entrance exams (since she would be tied down with a toddler) this is not true.

This was an unhealthy thought that the ML had after they (husband and wife weren't taking all of the necessary precautions for contraception) fell pregnant 2 years before the exams would be reinstated. Was it a shitty thought? Yes. Did he follow through with any of his thoughts? No. It was a passive-possessive move only. This also implied that the ML wanted to smother the MC/FL's dreams and aspirations; which is also a lie.

The ML has always supported the MC in all of her endeavors. Is he self-conscious and has second thoughts? Of course, he does. But does he follow through with them? Nope! Did he continue to be loving and supportive of his wife all the way? Hell yes!

Is he obsessed with having many children? No. Is he obsessed with having a daughter? No. Does he treat his children like wallpaper? No. Does he treat his sons like enemies? No. Is the ML patriarchal? Hell no! Is there some jealousy? Of f*cking course, it's human nature. This man followed his wife to take exams at over 30 years old. Like who does that? Even in real life, it's hard to believe.

Also, spoilee said that the Ex-wife should be pitied. She just wanted to follow her dreams... Here is my take on the ex-wife (whose name I do not care to remember) she was an educated youth who apparently had a sweetheart who broke her heart after she left for the countryside or during (again her details aren't that important to me) so she decided to engage the ML in conversations to make a match; since he was a soldier and should have many rich future prospects.

They marry, and have kids; however, she is not satisfied since the ML is mostly at work; and leaves his paycheck to the MIL (who is bloody awesome BTW) she's not a monster in law, what one person has, everyone has in their home. She wasn't satisfied with the dynamics.

I only feel a slight level of sympathy for the situation she was put into. She could have pulled a Lin Qin He from raising cubs in the 60s and gained control of his paycheck another way, but I digress, one day after all of her dissatisfaction reached a peak, she received a mail from a friend saying that her sweetheart would be engaged/married? And decides then and there, that she doesn't want to be married anymore, and also, doesn't want to be tied down with kids.

She basically forces the ML (who is a hardened, serious, no-nonsense man who actually really cares for her) to get a divorce. And once it was finalized she said Adios, and never came back. So no, she was following a man who never showed up for her. And if that was her dream she should have not "tried out" marriage with an honest man while holding a flame for another in her heart in the first place.

To be brief about the other spoilers: they stated that the 2nd SIL was turned into a 2-bit CF because of the FL. Which again is false. This woman was instigating ML's stepson (who was still adapting to the situation) to refuse the FL so that his mother could come back.

Which was selfish as hell! Taking into consideration that the ML is the primary breadwinner of the whole household; since they were not legally separated, yet; however, this SIL always had something to say when food, clothes, and labor were distributed like she had no self-awareness at all. Without the MC most of this could be brushed off, but once there was someone else to keep her in check, she showed her true colors. The ML even gave her another chance by warning his brother that this would be the last time. And guess what?

Of course, she blew it, by telling the ML's son that since the FL was pregnant, he and his sister were no longer important and would suffer in the future. And guess what? You guessed it! The ML heard everything. So short story; she was not forgiven, her family was separated, and after more blunders, like thinking she was pregnant, then cursing the community DR., and getting banned by said DR. ML's brother finally grew a pair and decided to divorce her. And Adios.

[collapse]

In closing, I just needed to rant because this was a hidden gem that was well thought out, and really realistic in terms of the character build and human relationships pertaining to that era. So, please DONT s*** on a period novel if you can't handle the language or the customs that were viewed as normal during those times. Thank you 😊 <<less

**3.5 "Your Average 1970's Kinda Chinese Novel" Stars**

Pretty chill, I would say.

If you're a fan of these CNovels:

  • Back to the Sixties: Farm, Get Wealthy & Raise the Cubs (but not as repetitive/long)
  • Bai Fumei in the '70s (but less of the angst/romantic drama)
  • Transmigration: The Peasant Makeup Artist (but less business/child-rearing)
... then I think this would be up your alley. They all have a hardworking FL lifting up the ML and bringing her family into prosperity. Also, The Peasant Makeup Artist has the same translator - thanks so much... more>> for introducing us to these sweet slice-of-life's!

TRANSLATION

The translator notes that it's edited MTL in the beginning and that English isn't their first language. It could use some proofreading but definitely a step up from MTL. They're very open to feedback in the comments. In general the harder bits to follow were mistaken pronouns, lack of quotation marks for dialogue, odd sentence syntax/structure, and repeated paragraphs that had different translations. Sometimes the main messages of the dialogue went over my head because of how it was written, lol, but the important bits are there.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Nothing really makes this novel stand out among the 70's transmigrator novels, but it's overall very wholesome. Here's a list of what to expect getting into it:

  • Minimal drama; ML and FL fall in love easily and without prejudice.
    • I like how both Jiahui (FL) and Donglin (ML) were both divorcees. Neither of them held it against the other though and came in with good expectations from the marriage. The FL just wanted someone to take her out of her mother's household so she wouldn't be a burden and the ML wanted someone to take care of his children. They were compatible from the beginning, even with gossip surrounding each other.
    • Did I like that the FL ended up being a virg*n? Eh, felt like a conservative take (coming from someone who grew up reading English bodice rippers where the FLs were always budding virg*ns and the MLs were rakish heathens lmaoo) but it wasn't like an overt "ML was her only" message. I liked that the ML went into the marriage not caring about the FL's "infertility" and being with someone else beforehand.
  • You get to watch the FL & family become successful
    • The FL gets her fam ready for the college exam and moves them to the city. She's a little all over the place though - she's good at sewing, cooking, teaching, English, etc. So all her ventures are short-lived (she doesn't really stick to anything except her translation job at the end) which is a pity. It felt like the author was picking and choosing useful skills for her.
    • The end was basically about the FL setting up her fam to become successful. Not gonna lie, my eyes were glazing over reading about land reform and planting seedlings and whatnot. I mean, it's nice that they all led good lives. But also, , , can we skip to the good parts, lol.
  • Not much character growth
    • FL is useful/smart/capable from beginning to end. ML is always an upstanding figure from beginning to end. Everyone basks in their glory. Ya see what I'm saying?
    • On the upside, everyone (except the antagonists) were pretty level-headed from start to finish.
    • It was still an enjoyable story without the growth/depth.
WHAT I EXPECTED AND DIDN'T GET

  • More character depth
    • Honestly I felt more invested in the FL's sister-in-law's romance compared to the main CP. They (the main CP) pretty much like each other from the start and are compatible. The ML is smart too but is in the background compared to the FL who makes business moves/the important decisions in the family. His biggest personality factor is being a military dude who loves his wife.
  • Less women on women fighting
    • All the people causing drama were women. (Second sister-in-law, the ex-wife, and the random sister-in-law at the end lmao.) I mean it's all petty stuff, but towards the middle I was just like "aw shit, here we go again" and had to read about some trouble a woman would cause the family. The FL's ex-husband kindaaa provided some drama but it was barely there lol.
  • More childcare, lol
    • I think the children had pretty minimal page time, but their appearances were always cute. I loved the progression of the older son Heidan opening up to the FL as his mother. The ending was mostly about how they turned out.
  • Less inconsistencies
    • The author purposefully kept the FL's background before transmigrating a blank slate so she could insert "she was good at this" whenever she wanted. Okay then.
    • ML's age was all over the place; one minute he's older than FL by 10 years and the next it's by 8. I think in the beginning, FL was 21 (3 years after her first marriage at 18) and ML was around 27-30 (10 years after he joined the army at 17 or so). The FL's OG age is one year younger than the body she transmigrated into, I think.
    • Also while the FL treated her stepchildren really well, there was a line where she was subconsciously biased towards her own child which made me side-eye. The line talking about caring for them out of a sense of responsibility cheapened their good mother/children relationship, imo, and wasn't necessary.
OVERALL

Sweet and simple transmigrating into the 70's and raising a successful family story. Not much character development/intense emotion, but it was a wholesome and chill slice-of-life cnovel. While there were a couple of "rah rah patriotism" lines, it wasn't heavy messaging and seemed apropos for the time period.

TL;DR Read this if you're into:

  • Smart FLs who carry their families into success
  • Minimal drama (mostly from inconsequential women that get dealt with)
  • Drama-free CP that like each other from the beginning and don't have misunderstandings
  • Wife-worshipping ML
  • Cute kids that appear here and there
  • A happily ever after!

I would like to agree with the review of saphie. This novel indeed has a good plot but the execution of it was quite poor. I also wanted to have the ex wife to somewhat have a little more screen time to add more drama. But overall this is a good/okay read. I like the plot, it's cute and fluffy. I like how FL did her best to be a stepmother. I like the healthy relationship of our FL and ML.

Good plot. Horrible execution. I can kinda see how the author wants it to go but everything just spiraled out their control so here is a messy, but nonetheless, finished work. Everything was very smooth after the sister-in-law scene and no conflict at all that I wished the x-wife would just appear and make a scene! She did, but left so soon I didn't feel her presence at all. It was heartwarming actually, but I just can't bring down the boringness and flatness it gave that it made it unenjoyable.

A good slice of life china 1970s story. It is deep in history, gender prejudice of rural people at the start but it get better with passing due to the story's passing years.

MC is a future person so it all came rather smoothly for her and she took her in laws family and her own family along to the rich life.
