I am quite fond of the twists and turns the protagonists goes through just live. This book honestly is so fun to read and there are times I get goosebumps just from the stuff the protag does to keep himself safe and the plans that he makes that won't go the way he wants it.

Amazing story - probably changed my outlook on life somehow, too (... wish that was a joke >_>). To be fair though: ... more>>
Spoiler

the more you read this series, the more you'll come to take the characters' behaviours seriously & soberly, and thus the more you'll come to find them all somewhat pitiful like you should have from the start. The MC is a total psychopath, and that's a bit hard to accept - short or long term - in a character that you're seeing through the lens of. It's obvious from the outlook [from the start] that he's a neurotic nutcase, so I can't say that this is a spoiler, but I'll admit that I took the story like one would take any Shounen-like Seinen hybrid (... like The Second Coming of Gluttony or Solo Leveling, or something similar) that, albeit Adult, is more about the action & the novelty of the situation. It's really nothing like them, which is why I wonder if this was done by design.

Sure, that's certainly a big plus for the shtick this has going for itself, but 'the problems of our cast's yesterdays are never just Yesterday's', and they certainly never just "magically fix themselves up" - no sudden bouts of contrived enlightenment, or convenient self-therapy'ing to the blissful ignorance of all others~.

[collapse]

The MC is extremely predictable throughout the story—unexpectedly though, not due to some adherence of expectations or foreshadowing. No—rather, he's "predictable" because he's a psychopath that can only rationalise emotions as equations, himself included. He isn't some autistic recluse, but rather is an absolute genius of a manipulator. Heck, saying that "he's what I'd imagine hi*ler to sound like" is-.... I'm not kidding when I say this, but I'd feel like I was dehumanising hi*ler too much by such unreasonable exaggerations that clearly only intend to slight.

He's a piece of garbage & the only reason this kind of protagonist even-remotely has the chance to do more than ruin people's daydreams, is simply because: with how bloody well he's written, oh boy will he do more than just your daydreams! I said at the start that this book kinda, somehow changed my outlook on life, right? I said it wasn't a joke—and I meant it. He's so convincing that I've began to wonder if I've completely missed the point in living by taking precedence in compassion, empathy, & self-dignity, over pure results & unbridled control. "Am I the one who's the hypocrite?", "Am I worse than such a tr*sh human by being self-serving in my kindness to others?", "Is Ambition synonymous with putting a value on literally everything? Does that make it inherently justifiable as 'Good'?", and finally, "If judging all life & material on the same scale is the most inherently-justifiable act of 'Good', ie indicative of Humanity [noun]; then, is any kind of charity without motives - genuine Good-Will and/or uncalculative Empathy - something Immorally Irresponsible?"...

... "Is every effort to oppose the essence of 'Being Human' - for all its ugliness & unsightliness - not a striving effort towards Evolution or Enlightenment, not an effort to overcome the shackles of the animal within—instead, is it all just a perfect little (big) lie, a form of brainwashing, a rumour spread, a manipulative trick, that inherently belies the natural, malicious intent of the human condition's desire to dominate all?" (?).

These are some things you may just take away from this story. It's both nihilistic & extremely cynical. However, that's the brilliance of a well-written a**hole. It's fresh & different. At least, it's a first for me. Those naive, dense protagonists will barely (... though not completely, lmao) prepare you for this; so strap yourselves in & get ready for one hell of an existential crisi- guh, I mean, "for one hell of a ride!"...

(Yeah, you've been warned already. But hey: Enjoy this work of art!)

1. Characters:

The characters are especially well written. In particular, the personalities each character has make them distinct from one another. You will either love or hate the character but not because of their s*upidity or their lack of common sense but because their personality might be something u like or find despicable. But one way or another they are entertaining,

2. The World:

The world here is fun and believable. Due to the interference of other worlders (earthlings normally) many societal changes have happened such as the changing of governments and... more>> what not. What I like the most is how the world interacts with the happenings around it (especially how it reacts to the shenanigans of the MC).

3. Plot

In this department the story is a bit slow as while we are progresssing plot wise we still have no clear enemy or goal that we, as the readers, know yet as it's shrouded in mystery. The reason I find it okay and not something i'd deduct points for is due to the fact that we still have over half the story left to properly weave the regressor plot in.

All in all I enjoy this novel soooo much! A heads up for those who plan to read this novel, don't let the title fool you, the MC isn't a regressor himself, its the Sub MC who is. That is what makes this novel entertaining. It's not the generic Regressor plot. It's the story of how someone, with no knowledge of the future, leverages the fact that he knows someone who DOES. And thats why I love this story, its something refreshing. <<less

This novel is easily top 3 of it's genre with interesting plot twists that leaves me with ' wtf ' kinda moments.
The MC is the type that is a total piece of sh*t that I still like and hate at the same time, basically a scumbag that you will end up liking.
he does nothing without hidden reasons behind it, use people around him, playing on their emotions to exploit them for his own ends.
as you may have thought the scheming is of the main themes but there is also a fair bit of action.
at some point everyone seems to be dancing on his palms.
i hate myself for loving the MC, he is that kind of character.
aside from the MC the story is very good and entertaining.
overall a MUST READ for all fantasy genre readers, heck for all novels readers.

Pretty good read so far. The MC is smart, he knows how to manipulate people's minds to work on his favor. I love the fact that most of the time his plans backfires and he has to think of new plans around it. Overall, the story is fun to read, I've got a few laughs, and the characters are memorable and are developing well.

Interesting read, nice to have a MC that's not a goody two shos and instead a scumbag for a change.

This dude isn't your friend even if he pretends it, his a schemer, manipulative and uses his head well. He also doesn't get some op superpower and struggles his way though events. Overall a good read that's different from your tipical novel

It is good actually, the chara and story looks promising, but... there are many confusing part. Idk if its originally written like that or else, but I can't tell when, where they are doing at the moment. Like not even mentioning the place but not describing what they are doing and where the place. I always ask myself, huh? What? So, they are still in that place? Uh, so they are in dorm or what? What about other people? Aren't there other people are there? Oh, they are there the... more>> whole time! Like that. <<less

If you like regression type novels this is a must read:

  1. Well designed "game-like" system with interesting skill acquisition, talents, and development paths
  2. Rational and nuanced MC who isn't unnecessarily cold-blooded, but is willing to lie, cheat, and swindle his way to survival and power
  3. Great pacing and levity when needed
  4. Strong writing throughout

Seeing that there are already many reviews that explain the pros and cons of the novel, I'm not going to give a full-on explanation and instead just going to give a recommendation.

Just read it, it's a pretty good novel. You won't be disappointed.

I love it, everything from the character, world, and plot, it’s not really a power-up novel, and it’s not a weak MC novel, it’s a balanced MC who strive to be strong in different way in another world.

MC would be a sociopathy if it was not tha fact that he isn't a lost cause and was able to grown fond of some people (even if he still manipulate them to his own ends) and he is still able to feel guilty, so far the story its quite empty? Its more of a psychological thing to me since it focus on relationship, the world building is quite shallow and the author dont even describe some stuff when it comes to fights (i got troubled trying to imagine some... more>> fights that the author didn't bother to even give a hint on what they looked like)

I'd usually give a 3 (3.5 if I could) but the 4 is for the feels, as once my ancestors once said

It is a very interesting novel. Especially considering that the protagonist is a weakling and has to use his brain and his twisted personality to survive. For some reason this novel reminds me of the TSCG novel.
Spoiler

I give it a 4 stars because the author is very determined to make homos*xual jokes between the protagonist and the Returned. At first it has fun but then it becomes irritating. Not that I care if something happens between the protagonist and the Returned but since I am 99.99% sure that nothing will happen it is simply irritating to see how the author repeats it over and over again.

There are various reasons why you would consider picking this up.

First of all, I consider this novel to be quite fresh thanks to the unique perspective of a side character who is actually one of the manipulators that some MCs realize they exist (though our current 'mc' doesn't), instead of the usual regressing/reincarnating/transmigrating MC, the 1st pov writing style also helps with grasping the true intention of the 'piece of shit' MC.

Secondly, The hidden link that gave the MC access to some of the last round events made it even... more>> more fun to see his he would have actually progressed if not for this round's change is another great effect. (Butterfly effect to its maximum)

Lastly, yanderes. (That doesn't need much explanation imo :') <<less

This novel is all in all, decent. It has it's times where it's boring, and times where you can't wait to read the next chapter.

One example of it being boring is when: ... more>>

the author put too much time in the tutorial dungeon. So bad that I almost dropped the series. The author also shows the pov of this irrelevant character for the whole chapter at least two times.

One example of it being good is when:

When the main character thinks that he does a big brain move but then an unknown variable happens. Like taking control of a future archmage but then said archmage falls in love with him and is actually a psycho b*tch.

I'd recommend this novel to those that don't have anything to do since you would want to binge this novel or else it would just be straight doo doo water. <<less

Overall this is a very nice novel. Relationships and dialogs are well made and don't feel unrealistic. The author tries to always keep us anticipated for the next situation and how it's going to develop. Since MC is made pretty weak and there are always stronger characters around and against him, he tries to solve everything with his mind which is not a frequent occurrence in fantasy novels. However I don't really like the fact that most of female characters that fall in love with him are crazies. Though it's... more>> personal preference

MC has his own talents and it's very interesting to look at how he develops them, as they are a little bit unorthodox. Even though there are situations where he is clearly lucky, it doesn't feel that odd.

Except for it being an unusually long novel (1000 chapters) that requires a lot of patience to wait for, this is a gem for me <<less

Genius novel with great setting and superb translation.

The MC is a bastard without a doubt, but has his bottomline- no evil like in RI for example.

The side characters have actual personalities and aren't basic cliches. The harem is unique, and a big part of the plot- in a good way. Humor plays a huge part too, subtle and not too rare, without beeing annoying.

Chapters are updated reguarly in a good quantity too, around 10 chaps a week

Regressor Instruction Manual is one of the novels I just can't get enough of. At the early chapters, I was a bit skeptical on whether I should continue reading the novel due to it not really being that interesting and it was sort of all over the place, but after a while the novel really gets going.

The characters personalities are all good, the early parts of the novel really shaped them up in the later chapters, for better or for worse. The MC is cunning and his heart is indeed... more>> pitch black, with a pinch of conscience left, so he's not hopelessly lost, especially towards the people he's been with from the beginning, he often tells himself that he's being practical but as a reader you can tell he cares for them, albeit at times shamelessly manipulating them for his benefit and survival. Sometimes the MC is downright cruel however, despite he himself is aware of his conscience getting pricked, this gets slightly annoying.

The world building is sufficient, enough to get an idea of the atmosphere and to set up a new stage for the MC to pull strings in. Most of the happenings around the MC is of course, not a lot of combat but more about plotting and talking, which is the best part about the novel, of course. The lead up towards the fruition of his plans is just great, usually against people that deserve it which makes it more satisfying, also considering how often underestimated he is. Despite his expertise in subterfuge however, sometimes he gets bit in the ass which adds to a more enjoyable reading experience, showing he's not perfect.

For the translation, it's decent, maybe a 7.5, sometimes I have to read a sentence maybe twice to understand what a character was trying to convey. The word "embarrassed/embarrassing" appears so frequently that I start to wonder if it's become very generalized, that it's used to replace words such as "ashamed" or "frustrated", which at times would be more appropriate. Furthermore, whenever there is a change of timeframe or perspective, there's no indicator whenever it does happen, like a simple "~Kiyoung's Perspective~" or a massive line that separates paragraphs in order to indicate a different perspective, hopefully they do something about this, but it's doable. The rapid release of chapters make up for this however, this is the fastest release of chapters I've seen in a translation group, so fast and decent enough that I do spend money to buy cheap chapters. Better than overpriced monthly recurring payments for meager amounts of advanced chapters.

Overall, if you want to read a novel about a protagonist who for the most part, has no inch of selflessness, is a merciless manipulator and a brilliant schemer, this novel is for you. <<less

Despite having the name Regressor in the title, the main character/narrator is not the regressor.

[collapse]

The main character is shrewd, shameless and smart, and in the early chapters, often inhumane. Don't let this deter you however, if you're a person capable of reading between the lines you're able to see that the main character has a large amount of compassion for his party and friends.
