“Until the day humanity falls.”

In the year 2020, Earth’s magnetic poles disappeared and humankind was nearly wiped out by cosmic radiation. Within the span of a hundred years, living creatures began to mutate and devour each other while the remaining humans, numbering in the tens of thousands, struggled bitterly in their man-made bases.

In the Abyss, home to the mutated xenogenics, there lived a sentient little mushroom. Because it had been nourished by the blood and flesh of the deceased human An Ze, not only did it take on a similar-looking human form, but a similar name as well: An Zhe.

An Zhe is determined to go to the human base to search for his spore, which had been harvested by humans. Once there, however, he faces the omnipresent risk of discovery and certain death as he tries to keep his non-human nature hidden from the Judges, whose responsibility is to inspect for and eliminate xenogenics like himself. And of all the Judges, Colonel Lu Feng is the most perceptive and merciless—as soon as he determines that someone is a xenogenic, he will execute that person on the spot.

But An Zhe’s mutation goes undetected by Lu Feng’s eyes, and so a tale of humans and xenogenics unfolds…

This book is ammaaziiing!!! Dont be fooled its a happy ending. The summary is so misleading cause this me cry a a damn river. Highly addictive read it until I fell asleep without knowing it. ML and MC are so complex and their relationship doesnt interfere with their own personal goals. The spore is just so godam adorable and I love its interactions with the MC. Uhhhgg my heart. Highly recommend !!! Read it NOW you wont be dissapointed.

Warning: After reading this story you may never pass through the mushroom isle in supermarkets without crying.

The description is very deceptive. Like it's not true but also it is? Like maybe if you squint..... Honestly, the description has a disgusting amount of sugar and fluff that's clearly non-existent in the story. What a scam..... but it did successfully bait this person into reading it though.

It's Happy Ending, but throughout the whole story you will need to constantly remind yourself that it's HE and continuously chant it like a prayer. Because... more>> how the story goes you ain't gonna think that anything can save it now and honestly the "HE" magic word will be the only thing to keep you sane. Still it's HE indeed, but my heart has been thoroughly torn and it hurts too much that HE doesn't cover the wound enough. It's still a very good read though.

Lots of deaths. There's no use getting attached to most if not any living character here, they will die. Rarely will anyone have a survival rate of more than a few chapters. Annoyingly enough those characters have enough screen time to make them damn memorable. It shows how good the writing is.

The world building need to be praised as it was wonderfully sensible. It's a depressing world with equally depressing people. Well who wouldn't be when the smallest of scratches can get you killed.

Overall, the story made me clench my chest and scream AAAAAAAaaaaaaahhhhh WHYYYYyyy NOOOooooo It Hurtsssss Stooooop........ cri

10/10 will read again for a good cry. <<less

God where do I even start?

First of all, remember that this is a HE. Although things gradually decline to where the sun don't shine, remember that this is a HE. Second, MC is weak. This isn't an insult, in fact it's a beautiful character trait he has and it greatly reflects on his personality of being gentle and inert, unfazed and ever so kind like those white clothed daoists under the gentle moonlight you read in ancient chinese literature. He's just a smol mushroom and I just wanna hug him... more>> and give him potato soup so he can feel better QAQ

This novel was so goddamn emotional for me. I swear to you, even classic western YA novelists won't be able to write something as holy as this. It starts off as a little mushroom who lost their spore one day when humans went to take samples of the Abyss. The whole environment of this world is an apocalyptic setting where plants and animals mutate by consuming one another, which in turn transfers the genes and abilities of the prey to the predator. For example when a 'tree' eats a 'bee', they'll grow bee wings. The same applies to humans, and with just an open wound or even by standing near a powerful monster, they can get infected. This means two things: one, the monster infecting them intends to use the human body as a breeding ground, raising its eggs and eating the human for nutrition and intelligence. Two, the human becomes that monster, eating more and more humans.

The infected can also become a 'heterogeneous' species which are the most dangerous type and mutate at incredulous speeds, as well as camouflaging within the human race, and are the hardest to detect, often leading to half the population dead when spotted. For this reason, there are Judges who view human behaviour and inspect humans entering and exiting the base. If they feel that there is an infected, they won't hesitate to shoot them on the spot. These Judges also won't be charged for these mass mu*ders since it's for the sake of humanity and without their intuition, no one would be alive today. It truly puts the book into a purgatory state as the human race grows more and more precarious and the mutated beings proliferate, and as the little mushroom sees all this, he learns what it means to be human, and if the human race is even worthy to live for so long. Is there really any hope when the world collapses? In the end is science even relevant? Is everything we learned to love and protect meaningless?

We view these dilemmas and paradoxes through the mycelium of An Zhe, a little mushroom. As the world grows fickle and grey, as the infection bruises and picks up speed, as more monsters gain human intelligence and take down their armament, as more infected die under the gun of the Judge, as humanity grips onto it's last straws, human interests take precedence over all. Our survival as humans don't depend on science or militia, but on kindness and love of one another.

Jesus, just, I absolutely adore this author. She incorporates actual scientific theories and astronomy in this apocalyptic pilgrimage, and not in anyway confusing thanks to the GOD of translators, rainbowturtle. There is so much that is discussed, it's so diverse it's insane. People of colour are included, the disabled have a role, every side character will make your heart bleed because of their stories, there is even a dystopian organization of women with their only purpose to breed the human race, and it leads to an outcry of to what extent are we considered human? Will these women ever gain the right to just walk outside? Not only that, but we see how everyone is torn asunder when the killings done by Judges go too far, or when scientists after 20 years haven't made any progress in finding a cure, or when monsters gain the intelligence to disable the base's main power then attack.

After all this is said, I highly recommend you all read this novel. I promise you, even if you don't like BL, there is no way you will be disappointed. The relationship between the MC and ML is extremely special and important in this story, and their interactions always seem to be tied to fate. We unravel both character's insecurities and their stress for humanity. In the end, MC goes through so so much, and sees so much death and despair, and ML is forced to keep killing for humanity, losing bits of himself little by little. God their relationship made me shed so many tears, and when the day ends, An Zhe is just a little mushroom. He never asked for any of this, but because of his gentle nature, he faces the dangers head first, and forgives those who wrong him. All I can say is, please give this novel a shot, you won't be disappointed. Now excuse me as I cry my eyes out for my lil mushroom boi An Zhe- <<less

I actually cried when I read this, and I kept chanting that this is HE. Otherwise, I can't read this till the end. But really, the author's writing style and the translator's work is so f*cking good. I got absorbed into the story deeply.

thing interesting philosophically, but the author has integrated their overarching themes very well in a non-hamfisted way, which I have to respect. The story balances emotional transitions between upsetting and amusing moments very well, and characters are written in a way that you care about them within a couple chapters. It's a great story with a strong plot progression and when the author uses cliches they aren't stale.

All in all, it's a worthwhile read. You could definitely rec it to randos who've never touched light novels imo. <<less

I love it. It was a fantastic emotional roller coaster. To be honest this is one of my favourite bl novel so far.

The plot is amazing. Like the synopsis implies, MC is a mushroom trying to get his spore back from the human in a world that's falling apart. The concept is really fresh and I love how it's executed. The author and the translator did a good job of coveying the story to the point that I'm fully immersed.

Despite the MC and ML somewhat indifferent throughout the story, I... more>> can't help but sympathize with each character especially the main couple. Each character have their own stories which make me get the impression that each of them are human not just some bystander in a bl novel.

The love story is bittersweet and honestly I love their beautiful development and ending. I also love how the author depict human emotions and humanity as a whole.

A great read, totally recommended. <<less

Overall: 4.5/5 (rated 5/5)

Probably the second fluffiest novel I've read despite it being the most depressing setting and plot.

Story: Post-apocalyptic world after everything turns to sh*t starting in 2020 (... wait a moment...!!). Nearly a century later, monsters roam free and humanity shelters in three major military bases. Think Annihilation (any exposure to a monster's blood causes a human to mutate and become a monster in turn) meets Attack on Titan (living in bases, going out on missions to obtain resources and cull the monsters, monsters infiltrate... more>> the base). People die--even people that you think would be safe. The MC manages to absorb human DNA, meets up with a group of humans to return to their base in order to find his mushroom spore that was taken from him, takes a front row seat in witnessing the end of civilization, and ends up being humanity's salvation.

MC: The shou. Literally a mushroom (that absorbed human DNA and thus is able to maintain a humanoid body). The author does a great job a depicting him as a naive monster that learns to adapt to humanity but still just always maintain a slight inhumane aspect. He is adorable and earnest.

ML: The gong. ML is a stereotypical cold and OP soldier on paper; however, his characterization hits the right tones to make him a fully three dimensional person. He has the skill of being able to recognize any monster (and thus human contaminated by monster DNA and about to turn into a monster) and is hated as a Judge with an inhumane "shoot first and... don't ask questions because I am always right" mentality.

Relationship development: Rather slow burn. ML takes notice of MC from their first interaction at the base's gates and is indulgent without necessarily having romantic undertones until nearly the very end. Then ML starts--as MC would put it--"bullying" MC very thoroughly. Their relationship is very fluffy, which is a stark contrast with how bleak their world is.

Critiques: A dump of exposition on physics and science-y stuff at the end that I honestly just skimmed over. The science aspect was fine, but it could of been worked in more fluidly. <<less

I binged this in two sittings (I had to take a pause because it was 2am and the guy just kissed a mushroom)

While the premise isn't 100% attractive and it may be a little weird to remember the MC is, literally, a mushroom, it's a very interesting story and poses a lot of questions regarding the nature of humanity as well as morality. It also stares down the gun barrel in terms of looking at survival and fear. Keep in mind that this doesn't truly address the questions, the... more>> the delivery is very engaging.

The narrating voice is honest, and the MC being a mushroom allows for the author to take a step back from humanity and to observe from a distance. The characters are interesting, and the pace is quite nice.

Overall, very nice if you like an existential bit of fluff, delivered on a post apocalyptic, mushroom-narrated platter, or want a bit of a fantastical excursion to divert time. While I am not in love with it, it was hard to turn away from the mushroom.

note: a previous reviewer said that this is not a light read. However, for anyone who enjoys existential and moralistic questions, this is probably a casual, fun, and light story <<less

As you read this do not forget that it's tagged with 'happy ending'. I cried a lot of times, both happy tears and sad tears.

It's just so so good the fluff, plot, world building, characters, and everything else. Although I'm dumb and didn't get most of the sciency stuff, it was fun. Maybe the magnetic field error and mutations might happen for real lol it's 2020.

Anyways the 4.9 rating really didn't disappoint!!

I feel like the author must have gotten at least some inspiration from the manga/anime HunterxHunter, especially the chimera arc. The chimera arc in that series had a species which would adapt the genes of whatever they ate into their own body, whether it was animal, insect, or human. This series and the other seem to be a commentary on human society, and how what we perceive to be right or wrong isn't alway black and white. Context matters.

Either way, I finished the first arc of this novel and because... more>> it felt a little too familiar to me, like I already analyzed something similar (ex. Above), I got bored of it. I'm not going to rate it because I feel it is not fair to do so without having finished the series. Ironically, I would recommend for people to read this if they haven't encountered the likes of these heavy topics in another form (especially in a BL). It will be really entertaining and might make you pause once or twice to evaluate what the thought behind certain actions really means. I don't think it's supposed to be a light read, so do take the novel description with a grain of salt: I had not encountered any fluffy moments in the novel up to the point that I read. <<less

5 stars!

I feel like my heart just went through a rollercoaster. What a ride! I saw this a while back but didn't read it cos I was wary of the potential mpreg (but it's not!) and woah! It's a really well done apocalypse book with a great HE though I seriously doubted that HE at first. And a bit of a tear jerker too. There's also humour and the book is fast paced (less than 100 chapters!) so it's a really good read that doesn't pull all your emotions down... more>> too. I liked the logic behind everything, the different characters motivations that were well integrated into the story and the world building in general.

Fav funny moment
Spoiler

was when little MC was arrested early on by ML for "indecent act" HAHAHA MC is easily bullied.

Most cry worthy moment
Spoiler

had a few but probably that conversation MC had with Polly that made him realise he loves ML. It's almost like a character study on ML that makes me want to hug him despite everyone hating him and his lonely position.

Overall a really good read, don't be mislead by that synopsis and always remember, it's a HE! <<less

I had a fever when I read this so I am really sensitive but I still can hold on, the plot isn't sad tbh. But, when chapter 76 arrived. Everything's crumbling down. Tears keep rolling down on my face that my vision turned blurry. My head hurts, and the fever really killing me, I am shivering hard it's really cold.

Really cold.

The MC and ML did have s*x in the extra once (this is written implicitly). But I think before that they're already did it when An Zhe ask do you... more>> want to sleep with me haha.

This is really recommended btw, most of things I want to write basically the same as other review. I just really want write about that time. When I really can't breathe coz the snot killing me. I am burning and feel so s*upid.

This was a breath of fresh air and pretty enjoyable. It gets a five star by default because there are literally no faults.

To be honest though, the 4.9 star rating got my hopes and expectations up that this would become one of my new favorite novels, but it probably wouldn't make my top ten. Like I said, there's definately nothing bad about it but I was expecting that it would blow my mind and then it didn't. It just became another good novel I read that I'd probably recommend.

I also... more>> cry super easily but didn't for some reason while reading this. There was a scene where my eyes started to water but that's it. Idk what happened lol did I just run out of tears finally? Or maybe it's because every single person keeps mentioning it's HE so I knew I had nothing to fear. It's by no means super fluffy but there's not too much angst either.

The world building is fantastic and I love the MC

This story is AMAZING.

That's all you need to know. I usually avoid these kind of apocalypse world because not many of them is enjoyable for me. But this one is sooo good. The background is makes so much sense with all the science in them. Its super believable and feels so real. The world building is detailed enough for me to understand what happened before. And I really love the pair.

MC is really lovely. A cute little mushroom like many other reviewer said. ML has both strengths and weaknesses which... more>> in my opinion is what makes this story feels believable because none of the characters is perfect. They are all human and have their own weakness.

Overall, this story is good. There's no boring time reading this novel. I really love this novel. <<less
