This is the kind of plot that makes you laugh out over MC's silliness.
Since he was suddenly transmigrated into a body of someone who was destined to be killed by the ML, the MC did everything to gain positive points from the ML. Other than that, he tried to stay on character and how the original plot of the novel because his original character from the novel was only a cannon fodder villain
Spoiler

but didn't realize it actually bring butterfly effect to the original plot

(pff silly boy).

And then the misunderstandings happened, and here come the angsts ripping your heart until the end of the novel (seriously, I marathon-ed it 2 days 2 nights and got dehydrated from crying a bucket).
Spoiler

I thought it was going to be sunshine and rainbow after the first misunderstanding settled but nooo... the MC met his fate and the ML fallen into madness

.

Perhaps he was a little airheaded, but that was to be expected from this kind of novel. In fact, that was a positive point of him. His original personality was of devil may care attitude. He had died once, the novel plot was still going and he only wanted to get out of the 'big' event alive. So excuse him for being a creepy, not-so-cannon fodder to the MC.

The only negative point of this novel was perhaps--as some people pointed out :
Spoiler

the MC and ML had poor communication skill that led to misunderstandings, separation, and even death

Started reading the novel after I was done reading the manhwa and you can see how some of the more gruesome parts of the story was toned down in the manhwa

Personally, the first few chapters of the novel isnt really spectacular, its only when the part ... more>>
Spoiler

the north kingdom starts getting invaded and XYA is forced to flee from it that things start picking up.

I also want to just point out that Hong Xiu deserves a medal. Literally my favorite side character who deserves the world. The contrast of how she acts towards XYA and others is honestly chef kiss, she could break all your bones but in front of XYA she just goes i've committed a sin, please punish me ;;

now some parts of the story which did make me go ?? Was the frequent thinking of XYA towards YHQ where he was still similar to the original YHQ when he clearly isnt. Each time XYA gets thrown into a wife plot he just goes oh no, anyways im p sure this was a mistake, yan-ge cant be gay!

Spoilers for extra:

it broke my heart to see the part where LWD and XCG even in the original world were attracted to each other (or at least on LWD side) but still all they got was a tragic ending so amen

Something that kinda iffed me was how little interaction XYA and XPY got at the end of the story, while I understand that her gf was withholding the information that XYA (in the north prince body) had died I would still have thought they would have visited XYA at least once after they went of to live their happy life, but all in all im glad we could get resolutions for majority of the cast by the end of the series.

Cute as hell. Depressing as hell. Not the best thing I've read, but a solid enjoyable read. All the pain you feel from the angst will get healed from the ending and the extra chapters so no worries.

I mixed this up with other novel that was a pure comedy and yes at the very first chapter it was sooooo funny I didnt realized but it just made it more shocking when the tragedies kept happening, but I refused to read the tags cuz I don't read tragedy taged novels except when I really want to hurt, so I decived myself just so I wouldnt drop this and it was worth it 100%!

The characters are super unique tho not original.

MC is so funny and full of contradictions but... more>> not in a bad way, as I sad he is not original per se but I just loved him and his speach almost 4th dimentional.

It's a HE so don't skip it just for the tragedy!! <<less

WHHYYYY. I started reading without looking at reviews or the tags and I regret it T-T. It's a good story and I'd recommend it if you're up for angst and drama but it took me by surprise because I thought it was going to be more lighthearted/comedic... I wanna see the ending but I also don't like crying every chapter so I think I'm gonna drop this. It seems very promising though! Just not for my sensitive ass, rip

actually likes him back. Then it turns into a tear-jerking historical empire-toppling/drama/tragedy of life, death, sacrifice and love. Finally, it turns into a new beginning/redemption line with a happy ending. The cute extras are of the main characters in a modern setting in an alternate universe.

Their relationship reminds me of some of the epic BL historical novels, like Golden Stage, Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, etc. There are things I'd improve, but overall I'd give it 4.5 stars, especially since I like the kind, happy-go-lucky MC. (Note: He's had a tragic life, but the more sad he is, the more he smiles and tries to get through life.) <<less

I found this novel enjoyable at the first few chapters. The author has refreshing irony as comedy. Unfortunately, MC's character development is disappointment. I found it strange for a an intelligent elite CEO jump from 5th floor to his death. While looking for acceptable reason for his actions, his character development after transmigration disappoint me. He was one born from respected family, has smooth career to be an elite CEO, and nowhere inferior in social class. But after transmigration, MC suddenly became naive young girl in mind and action. Some... more>> may find this cute, but for me, with his life's history this is doesn't make sense. No need to be domineering and genius as ruler, at least he is strong in mind and able to prepare for the mishap. But oh.. All MC did was second hand emberassment.

The plot was so so, my excitement died. <<less

Mere words are not enough to convey how much this masterpiece touched my heart. It was an absolute roller coaster and I am lowkey traumatised now... Because the author always followed anything remotely fluffy and hilarious with bone crushing angst

The deaths, the lives, the characters and every single chapter in this story fit together like a jigsaw puzzle, creating a colourful image that made you realise that life can be beautiful even with all the troubles we encounter. For XYA, his sacrifices had always been worth it. For YHQ, his... more>> sacrifices had been worth it, because even after all the heartbreaking pain and the bitter separation, they could finally meet again and grow old together.

This story makes you realise that the world is more than just black and white. There are motives and principles driving the characters, and you can hate the characters, but there is no way you can say "they are brainless, they shouldn't have done that".

The character development deserves a chef's kiss. The story killed and revived me again and again. And the extras? They made me believe in life. This is the first time I've read a novel based in historical times where the MC and ML respect each other as humans. The ML has a lot of trauma, most of them connected to the MC, but never did he hurt MC, not did he try to imprison him. Honestly? If something like what happened to him had happened to me, I'd have handcuffed the person to myself. I wouldn't even let them go to toilet alone. ML, however, would rather suffer the pain of separation than let MC feel like a caged bird. Their love is so pure it makes me smile and cry.

10/10 for translation, 20/10 for plot. Author knew what they were doing, so did the translator.

Ps. The ending for chap 4 gave me such a whiplash..... I was rolling on the floor, laughing, and then suddenly

Spoiler

MC jumped out to tbe window to commit su*cide after his bro told him to "go die" in anger

Gshdhdjjc this gotta be the best answer to when your sib says "go die", just say "ok" and jump off the building wheeeeze instant lifelong trauma for sibling

Tho, ofc, after a few chaps, when we come across MC's lifestory, we understand why he did that. It wasn't a spur of the moment thing, MC was just too broken inside.

[collapse]

But I was like *shocked pikachu face*

That escalated quickly. This entire story is quick escalations and equally fast deescallations. A rollar coaster ride, in short (and a long one at that) <<less

I really think this novel is the first to make me both laugh and cry in equal amounts. The author is so good at writing both scenes that will make you weep for ages, and scenes that will make you laugh and forget that this is a story with tragic elements lol. The story also has many twists and turns and creates such bittersweet moments that I could feel my heart clench when I read them.

Another thing I appreciated about this novel was its realism. MC doesn't instantly become accustomed... more>> to his surroundings like most other transmigration protagonists, his slight disorientation and disconnect with his new environment and role at the start made him a more realistic character IMO. ML is also a cool character, pretty much the opposite of MC lmao. This kind of hot and cold relationship really reminds me of Wei Wuxian and Lan Wangji's from GDC :P

And OH MY GOD!! Everyone rejoice because finally... there are villains in a novel which are not 2D!!😭😭😭😭 I absolutely loved that the villains, or rather the 'kind-of bad guys' were not just dumb cannon fodder. They had their own purposes, which were understandable and realistic, and this tied in so well to the plot point of everyone including the main couple being influenced by allegiances and politics. They did what they thought was best for their respective kingdoms, and weren't just brain dead corrupt govt officials looking to climb the social ladder.

The writing and translation itself is also very well done, and there were some beautiful images created from the author's words. We also get a WLW side couple! Which is something I would love to see more of in danmeis.

I think a small gripe I had was the last 20 chapters or so of the main story. It seems like the story was tapering off slightly towards the end in contrast to the strong beginning and middle, and the final big arc felt a little meh, as it kinda felt like stuff we had seen before.

However I would definitely recommend this novel. I binged it all in one day due to the chapters being pretty short. It's an all round solid work, a solid 4.3/5 from me :) <<less

this was the best historical transmigration novel I've read.

For anyone hesitating to read because of the "black-bellied" tag please do read it, idk how exactly the ML qualifies as Black-bellied but he IS NOT.

Is this novel extremely long ? Yes. Was it boring? Absolutely not!

... more>> don't let the number of chapters scare you. Despite having lots of chapters, they were really short ones compared to other novels so I was able to finish it in two days despite having work and school during the day, it's not THAT long!

Despite the countless misunderstandings that many people found outrageous, I honestly think the story wouldn't have progressed smoothly if that didn't happen.

MAybe to some MC would seem too s*upid and careless and dense but it all made sense when you consider his old life and his personality, his actions were all realistic. He was one of the most relatable transmigrators I've ever read about. MC's personality was also really consistent throughout the whole book which I appreciated so much. Yes, he gets great character development and matures as the book progresses but he still keeps what made him interesting. Same goes for ML, they were both very consistent but not stagnant. Their development felt very natural with how the plot progressed it was really refreshing to read.

This novel wrote about war so beautifully. It was sad, bitter, everything you'd expect from a novel set in a war. Things had consequences, not everything was sunshine and rainbows. Hatred doesn't magically disappear. Being an emperor isn't all fun and games, there were responsibilities and accountability, expectations from MC that he had to learn to deal with. It's really beautifully written.

Despite the angsty parts, despite the tears I shed while reading, I can't recommend this enough! I don't like angst but I would still recommend this because it was all worth it and it wasn't just gratuitous angst either, everything had a reason and made sense!

And the cherry on top for this great novel was the extra, which gave me everything I ever wanted from a transmigration novel. Bless the author for pandering to my tastes this much.

Spoiler

MC revealing his origins to ML WAS SO REFRESHING! Especially considering MC had nothing to lose and wasn't focused on following the plot, committed su*cide in his past life and wasn't afraid of dying, he just wanted to enjoy his time before he dies again. This is why it made sense considering their romance would've never worked otherwise. You can't expect ML to fall for the enemy that destroyed his kingdom and caused his parents to commit su*cide.

The northern and southern emperor could never be together without one of them letting down his own people and being accused of plotting revenge, what happened later HAD to happen and I'm so happy the author sprinkled some foreshadowing since the beginning. It was easy to guess by the end what would happen to solve their situation. It was so exciting to see my expectations being right.

I felt I was following a chicken without head.

MC is supposed to be a mighty company president transmigrating into the body of an imperor. If you think he'll use his knowledge of the book's futur events and his experience to govern his country or even do something about wars, allies,... think again.

MC is running around doing nothing but trying to reenact scenes of the book involving the ML but without using his brain, just impulsively deciding something out of nowhere.

Sure there are interesting secondary characters, sure ML will surely take... more>> control at some point. But I was just wondering why am I reading this, where is it going, should I drop this? Yes, dropped. <<less

Really good Tearjerker that descents into a bit of a dog blood drama. The chapters are rather short so it feels more like about 100 normal chapters.

The starting chapters are confusing and then it has a rather fun undertone. This will kinda stay so but it also has real drama but MC has this kind of sarcastic and fun loving personality that stays the same even while enduring hardship.

The story basically revolves around the lovestory and the war and kingdom struggle are mainly used to let MC and ML... more>> have misunderstandings and get tortured. This is also why I felt it descends into a dogblood drama... there is always either ML or MC in diere straits, near death wounded or some other hard to bear situation.

The story is with a real Happy Ending and thanks to the extras there are even more Happy Endings.

I was spoilert by a highly liked review that some likeable charakter died. That is true and made me so much cry that I needed to refill on tissues. It also made me f*cking apprehensive whenever there was a new character introduced that I liked.

So I will insert these spoiler now about likable character that will die. I put everyone in their own spoiler so that you can decide how far you want to be spoilt. I will sort them not in order when they die but in the order you will meet them in the story.

Spoiler

Hong Xiu, the maidservant will die at ch. 64

Spoiler

Eunuch Zhao, yes a rather unlikable but notable character. Dies at ch. 78

[collapse]

Spoiler

General Sun, around ch. 63

Spoiler

Xie Chungui, dies realy late in ch 181 but will tear your heart appart at around ch. 76

[collapse]

Spoiler

Li Wuding, ch 76. Yeah I was hoping he didnt really die but he is totally dead.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Nie Er, ch 75 also a rather unlikable but noteworthy character.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Xiao YuAn, ch 182. Yes the MC dies BUT the writer will spoiler you so hard at ch 100/101 that you just know he will somehow end up in another body. So no big surprise there, just dogblood

[collapse]

There are still lots of likable character and side pairings alive and kicking. So don't let this stop you from reading this novel.

I did especially like that MC wasn't hiding his rebirth to ML. He outed himself really early which did bring those two a bit closer and set the future mood. Unfortunately in the first half of the novel their communication sucks and they assume the totally wrong things. As soon as these problems are solved the communication works ok.

I don't regret reading this and feel like coming back at a later time again. <<less

I love this! The plot and the character development is great and the translation is good. It definitely deserves 5 stars.

The first chapters (when the MC was still in the modern world) were funny and illogical but as the story progressed, the plot started to build up and the emotions started to well up. There was the right amount of comedy, angst, action, and romance that made this story interesting. The ups and downs made me unable to stop reading until the last chapter.

It's funny because I didn't know that... more>> I've already read the manhua version of this. When the MC transmigrated, I felt that the story was familiar then I've learned that it was adapted to manhua and that I've seen this manhua (with a different title).

Anyway, reading this was fun and satisfying. This novel made me more interested in historical transmigration and rebirths. I definitely recommend this! <<less

This is... *chef's kiss* Honestly an amazing novel. The characters all had special meaning to them and it was both sweet and bitter once you get a bit deeper into the book. And I appreciate the amazing work Translator-Senpai for the amazing work they've done and also the very well-written foot notes. Very well-done 👏.

i really don't know how I feel about this novel honestly I do agree with other reviews this is like your Romeo and Juliet story tho I really love how it's written.

what I loved :

The tragedy tag was no joke and honestly, I really loved the first chapters.

The MC is not your typical golden finger MC as it is portrayed in the first chapters and his life really went 180°, he tries hard and does not slack off. His past is so depressing too and his personality just screams... more>> trauma but he's so cheerful, I really love the way he talks it's funny and just seems like I would be saying the same dumb sh*t if I were in his situation.

i love how the author managed to sneak in some yuri in there too.

the characters were well designed and exploited for the sake of the plot

what I wish was done better :

I really wish the explored the romance more in the first "arc" it could have been a bit longer

If you hate angst or you're looking for a light novel to read this is not for you, I advice you to come back when you're prepared to shed some tears. Other than that I recommend it.

and I wanna thank the translator for the amazing translation quality :) <<less

I've seen some reviewers saying the ML is childish and boring. But you have to read the whole story before coming into conclusions. There's so much character building after the first 50 or so chapters.

There's so much angst. The ML had to go through so much physical and mental torture😭😭 ... more>>

And don't get attached to any side characters. When you finally start liking someone, they are gonna drop dead in the next chapter

And you can't even hate any characters, even they do bad things to the ML or MC, because they are just trying to do what's best for their kingdom

I really really wanted to give this novel a proper try for no other reason than the fact that I have nothing to read and without anything to read I feel restless.

HOWEVER! My first attempt ended right after he k*lord himself in chapter whatever. That whole scene was so f*cking s*upid and made absolutely no goddamn sense. Like?? The whole “‘okay I’ll die’ and then he jumps off the 5th story building.” utterly baffled me. Like? Cause and effect? What was the purpose of any off that? S*upidest way to... more>> kill of a character ever.

However, after three days of scouring I couldn’t find anything to read and I figured: “hey! It could get better. Just ignore that.” so I do.

And then every chapter after I’m left wonder why the MC is so f*cking s*upid. Like I guess it’s supposed to be for “comedic effect” but for the MC to keep shouting nonsense about male lead this, protagonist halo that, is dumb as hell.

I kept pushing through because ultimately it is somewhat more realistic for a modern person that was suddenly thrusted into ancient times to be more down to earth and believe more in peace and shit. So him helping people up and being kinder and not necessarily wanting to punish people is pretty cool. However, the fact that he’s trying to idiotically push the ML and FL together by happenstance on purpose is dumb as hell. He could have honestly just took him over or had him act as an attendant when she just happens to stop by. It’s not that hard.

Not to mention, the cowardice-ness he portray at the mere mention of the ML bugs me. I guess that you’re afraid of dying (ironic since you kys but okay) but the fact that he walks around like a scared puppy with it’s tail tucked is pathetic. He could act more confident. Idk I just have a hard time trying to read this.

if you can find it funny that he keeps s*upidly yelling about a protagonist and female lead to everyone around him then find have fun.

so much potential wasted on an idiotic character <<less

Xiao YuAn was so distressed in ch.181 about Yan HeQing being stabbed that he felt his world blur yet he can still tell Xie Chungui to run away. Thats just a way to keep the halo on the MC at the expense of the romance. I mean if your lover is dying can you really have space for anything else in your head besides saving them.
