In short: an old lover gave me a little piglet.

Qin Zhuopu, a workaholic, has been single for many years. As he reaches middle age, his family is desperate for a child.

Until one day…

“Mr. Qin, your son is already in primary school!”

“???” I have only had one boyfriend!

Seven years after the breakup, the old lover returned to the wealthy family with a little fat pig in his arms: “Zaizai is a big eater, I can’t feed him. Zaizai’s primary school homework is too difficult, I can’t do it. I’ll give you guardianship from now on! Will you let me go to your construction site to move bricks? Son, say ‘Mommy’!”

Mr. Qin: (No, I couldn’t give birth to such a fat kid!)

Later…

Onlookers: I heard that Mr. Qin has adopted an illegitimate child born to his old lover by some woman?

Mr. Qin: Let me introduce to you, this is my own cub!

Misleading Description. The "Zaizai is a big eater, I can’t feed him" part literally happened in the last 2 chapters and is more of a joke.

Story:

7 years ago MC was scared away by his boyfriends mother. He ran all the way back home to the mountains, waiting for his boyfriend to come and make up not knowing he was already pregnant and it would take 7 years to see that guy again. As a spirit/demon he has a special physique and was able to beat a child, while he... more>> still was a naive young man, he now had to shoulder the burden of being a single parent. MC was uneducated mountain folk and could only work hard, three jobs at a time, to feed his son.

ML, not knowing anything of this is a rich workaholic only minding business when he stumbled upon a picture on the hot search... reminding him of all the feelings he had "forgotten". Slowly getting closer to his prey and working hard for forgiveness.

So... the story is basically how they come together again. MC has to resolve some heart knots, especially because he was subconsciously waiting for ML and was disappointed by him when he finally appeared.

The "break up" didn't happen because of problems between MC and ML but part of it is the "mother in law"drama and... minor spoiler that you most likely suspect early
Spoiler

... MCs grandfather intervened without him knowing and ML not "remembering"

[collapse]
.

I did like that MC didn't just fall into MLs arms and used his money as soon as ML came back and showed his intentions. MC continued to work hard, learn a craft and make his own living but it was not to the point where he became obstinate. Neither greedy nor grudging. I like how the writer balanced it.

Their communication is in place but the really important stuff somehow not. I was waiting for them to sit down and speak clearly. They could have solved the problems of the past pretty fast but were keeping to themselves... that is the only thing that felt annoying. Also the jump from getting closer to getting into bed was a bit abrupt in my opinion.

If you are concerned about the "little pig part"... there is no transformation.... until the extras.

If you are looking for a "realistic" story, this one might disappoint you. This is a rather feelgood story without too much drama.

I recommend it when you want something in between without too much depth but still tugging on your heartstrings and a warm cuteness. <<less

This was really short and enjoyable to read. I love ML and MC's character. ML and MC both didn't deserve all that separation. But I also love their story. This story was good to read after some heavy plot focused stories I recently read. Definitely give it a try.

A lighthearted feel-good story full of cuteness, determination, good morals, and an excellent chubby baby that steals every scene he's in.

I didn't read the extras because a narrative decision toward the end of the story kind of took some of the shine off & it was the end of the journey for me, but I don't regret reading a well-written and excellently-translated novel.

a stunning lack of empathy for a character who made a mistake, by no means the biggest mistake made, and was passive-aggressively backed into a corner until she had a mental breakdown, while the most villainous character received literally no backlash

It was better than I was expecting. I love LY and ML and I love the baby zaizai even more. I just wanted to hug and squeeze his little chonky cheeks.

honestly I was also hoping there was a spin off on maybe one of the other members of the 12 Zodiacs. I think my favorite genre of fantasy is when zodiacs are brought to life. One of the reasons I loved Fruit basket, so reading this was just a joy although I did wish their was more supernatural aspects than... more>> just eating a lot and being super strong. <<less

The novel is very different from the novel description above, I was actually expecting a different plot line. The scene in the description does happen but in the last few chapters but as a silly greeting. MC and ML meet up way earlier. MC in the novel is Lu Ying and not the Qin Zhuopu in the description, Qin is the ML.

Things I loved about this novel:

  • ML! He's seriously in love with MC, respects all his choices and even willingly made the decision to accept the child as his own and raise it before he even spoke to MC and reconciled with him yet. Where do you find a guy like that??
  • The way the author handled the zodiac, MC's special background etc. It's hinted, we as the readers all know they're magical in some way but it's never fully explained in detail so it's more like a "we know but not really" thing. Some authors try to over explain the unexplainable and it runs the magic, this author didn't try that.
    Spoiler

like how author had hints that MC was born in 1911 which makes him way older than the 27 that the story mentions and also grandpa Lu is a stag and that has nothing to do with the zodiac.

    [collapse]
  • Qin family, Song granny. I really liked how the grandpa and grandma had pretty much already accepted the kids into their family solely because ML loved him before actually finding out the kids is blood related to ML.

What I didn't like and mainly why I took off a star:

  • Spoiler

The rest of the zodiac are obviously rich. Brother Yang is a rich man and was more than ready to offer a job and spare apartment to MC, even brother Liu had money to invest in buying new homes and apparently grandpa Lu has priceless treasures... why didn't any of them help out MC when he had a kid? Why make him work 3 or 4 jobs like that. MC has his own pride but he still has his kid's best interest at heart. Even gifts and red pockets weren't given?

  • Also don't get why MC never looked for ML if he was still so in love. Even if it was too yell at him for not chasing him back.
  • Grandpa Lu. I kind of didn't like his storyline and how he and brother Yang got together and had a kid and was apparently not dead. And it was really his fault that MC and ML was separated for 7 years. He purposely put a spell on ML to wrote his memory because he hates humans. He just says a sorry and is instantly forgiven, is integrated intosociety after he has a kid himself... Ms. Qin says a sorry but isn't really forgiven and is blamed by the whole family when it's obvious she was still suffering from depression from her own husband's death and never got over it and felt bad about scaring off MC waay back in day 1 already. Like, just because you're gay in a BL doesn't mean you can do no wrong.

I won't rate it bcs I really don't know how to. It's well written and the plot is interesting, it's just that it has this trope I utterly despise and which gets me so angry, that the rage just built up until I felt like throwing the laptop across the room, and dropped the novel 10ch away from finishing it.

Spoiler

The trope of people around you hiding something really important from you, and the person who was your closest family faking death only to you, while the others all know. And then further, making a decision 'for your good' that actually caused you the most pain and loneliness besides the alleged death of the person who raised you.

So it's a complete recc if you aren't bothered by this trope. <<less

I know this is supposed to be fluffy and heartwarming, but I can't help thinking about the underlying angsty tone.

Our MC Lu Ying has so much love to give, but just because of the status of being uneducated and a family member's overprotectiveness, he's forced to leave the one person who can match all the love he gives. I cried reading how Lu Ying was actually looking forward to raising Zaizai together with Zhuopu. Life is unfair.

I'm so sad. I would've given this a 5star if not bcs all of the blame was focused on ML's mom.... personally for me what Grandpa lu did was more dangerous. He tampered with a normal human brain. ML even lived muddled headed for the past seven years bcs of that. Compared to what Mrs. Qin did, this is more dangerous.

Reading the reviewer I thought everyone was too dramatic about the Grandpa. I was wrong. He's the worst. The lines where Mrs. Qin tried to commit dead was so sad,... more>> and then when Lu Ying finally decided to speak he acted like everything was her fault. No it's not!! It was his grandpa fault! She didn't cause them to separate for almost a decade! Even if she scared him to fled back then ML did come for him! HE CAME! But what did the old man do? He TAMPERED with ML head! He is the cause!

I'M SO MAD AND SAD for Mrs. Qin 😭😭 she didn't even do anything bad.
Edit : MIND YOU SHE WAS CORNERED BY EVERYONE. Her in laws. Her son. Her mother. Her mother's family. According to them it was all her fault. (Well it's not like they knew what that old immortal do to their grandson/nephew/cousin.)

Spoiler

"After all, you were indeed the culprit, keeping me and Zhuopu apart for seven years, and involving Zaizai into this separation for seven years. But I was really happy to finally wait for you to apologise. At least you realised that you were wrong."

bit*h I hate you. You forgave your Grandpa easily bcs he was your Grandpa! Your mother in law didn't even do anything too bad for you! The only thing she did back then was to scare you and give you a cheque. P/s I only hate Lu Ying for this particular scene. I have to read the rest of the chapters so I tried to milden my dislike ahemm <<less

a truly enjoyable and fun read.

the ML is so f*cking good. T-T dare I even say the best ML I've read so far. FK. Everytime he says smth, I'm like f*ck. Why do I not have anyone like this. :') I enjoyed the extras as well. I wanted to see more of their family and sweet moments and the last extra gave a 'happily ever after' feeling and I'm here for it. ◡̈ the spoilers will be my thought on a certain part of the novel. Nth to criticise about just my thoughts on the character's forgiveness and what not.

Spoiler

like what others mightve felt, I think both mother qin and grandpa lu are the cause. Yes, mother qin started it but grandpa lu caused it to be irreversible. If we think about it this way, grandpa lu is def more to blame. But without mother qin's interference, he mightve never had the chance to interfere.

I'm sure most of us felt that MC 'punishment' of mother qin was tough/not as bad as towards grandpa lu but we gotta understand that we are seeing this as an outsider. To MC, grandpa lu is someone who has taken care of him for more than 50+ years. (He said he was born in 1911 and if we're in the 2000's it's almost 100 years.) whereas to MC, mother qin was someone who was mean to him even tho she was thinking about her son (or was she). So if course his treatment towards them both are different.

now with that said, the ML is the most forgiving or rather someone who takes the present as more impt than anything. If anyone else should be mad at grandpa lu, it'll be him. But he decided that it's fine and that he understood grandpa lu's view and accepted it. So me, as a reader, I'll have to accept the 'punishment' given to the characters too. I think grandpa lu is lucky that his grandson forgives him bcs his love for the ML is stronger and vice versa for the ml.

I do feel bad for mother qin, I won't lie. Yes, her depression caused her to be that way and no, it isn't an excuse. I like the way the author portrayed her and her illness and am happy she's trying her best to be well. Maybe I would've liked to see MC warm up more to mother qin but then again, it isn't my place. But I do feel that her actions wasn't really one from the heart. It started from the heart (when she thought MC was lying and faking certs) but over time, she just did it just bcs. She was like going on instinct and never thought about why.

I never expected to cry while reading this novel but I did when zai zai was looking at her and telling her not to cry.

AFTER A LONG TIME I READ SUCH A GOOD NOVEL!

The way the author described the relationship between the two families... specifically with the mom and the grandpa situation, I was impressed because it almost looked realistic. And the way our couple reconciled and bonded is such a heartwarming thing to read😭😭😭😭

I was enjoying it until towards the end you kinda get slapped in the face with biphobia and a little bit of xenophobia. Which you know some people might argue saying that the author doesn't owe you political correctness, or that the demographic is aimed towards Chinese people... It still sucks to see it you know? It still stings. It makes me wonder what a Chinese bis*xual person would feel reading that. I imagine it would sting too. The xenophobia just... Agh. Western stuff does this all the time where... more>> the one 'villain' is someone who isn't white.

It's a nice read but for me I found it a bit lacking.

I felt that the pace of the story moved too quickly. I also got confused as to why Lu Ying had to suffer so much when he had so many special siblings who worked in so many different fields. Grandpa Lu having things that could've given Lu Ying wealth but ended up not giving it to him was also a strange thing to put in the story.

If they all weren't humans in the first place, that's fine. But... more>> I felt that the author could've expanded on that aspect a bit more. It just felt as if there were a lot of side characters in the story that made it confusing.

The way the truth was revealed to Qin Zhoupu and his mother during that dinner was also so chaotic I got confused with all the words.

It felt like a lot of info-dumping in this story which I did not enjoy.

I also would've liked if Qin Zhoupu chased after Lu Ying (our MC) a little more. The way they got together was really quick, mostly because both of them were pining for each other already anyway. I think I would've liked more flashbacks and a bit more angst.

Zaizai was cute though.

I guess I'm just nitpicking. It is a nice story to pass the time. <<less

Nah man f*ck MC's grandpa, and also the Yang dude the grandpa got pregnant.

This isn't that deep and this is supposed to be a feel good, turn your brain off type of story. The translators did amazing.

I can't really give this a fair rating because I'm honestly too annoyed right now. I love the main story and the main couple and their kid. Things were going so well. MC and ML are honestly too nice, but what the hell man, ML's mom got consequences of her actions (low contact and a bit of a distant relationship with her son) and she's given a chance to redeem herself slowly.

But what the hell, MC's grandpa legit messed with ML's brain, causing MC to struggle needlessly for a couple of years, makes MC grieve him when he 'dies', comes back to life and gets MC's close friend pregnant. Oh BTW, MC's friend helps with the lie. F*ck them all honestly. Things got brushed under the rug. Wished the grandpa stayed dead. Also, eff the friend. Chose d*ck over brotherhood. Yes, I said it. Didn't like them enough to care about his randomass puke ass love story with gramps. I can empathize but still. F*ck them as a side couple

Star docked for never getting to see the ML discover the truth behind his misunderstanding of the MC’s birth year! Half-kidding, but I did feel disappointed.

This is a heartwarming and comedic tale of a human and a *** overcoming the prejudice of their respective elders. It sticks to the theme well and has a good ending. The star is actually docked for various tiny inconsistencies in the plot and world building.

Spoiler

Minor example, the two prelude extras diverged from things known earlier in the plot: The ML’s description of their first kiss might as well have been him getting a kabedon from the MC. The extra instead presented him as a thirsty but shy boy who tenderly revealed his desire for a kiss before they both were mutually carried away in a restaurant. This is actually fine considering that the ML was teasing the MC when he recalled the original situation. Some exaggeration would not be unusual considering the context. The larger concern is the MC’s understanding of relationships. He was not aware Grandpa Lu loved a man, but he should have been aware of the two established relationships among his siblings by that point in the story (one hetero, one not). In fact, those would be his only understanding of relationships. It’s actually a little odd that he had such a high awareness of heterosexuality considering his closeness to Brother Ji (not to mention Grandpa Lu). Maybe he saw or heard some stuff on the construction site. Even so, his sounding board for any questions would have likely been his closest friend who is in a committed relationship with Dr. Hu.

The above example is very minor as I said. I just find this story lacking in these little details. Like what did Teacher Wang do after her career was destroyed, presumably right out of college? What she did was instigated by her cousin and she had obvious doubts. She was PROBABLY contributing to her fam disowning her cousin. One sentence hinting toward this being fact would have giving that practically unnecessary arc some depth.

qin zhuopu is honestly the best dude and didnt deserve anything that happened to him. The author didnt even give a satisfying resolution to luying's grandfather literally erasing his memory and making it so he missed out on all his son's best young years. Not to mention the fact that they made it so lu ying had to struggle on his own when he wouldnt have had to if his frickn grandpa had just left things the fek alone. It's so not fair that grandpa lu is just forgiven and even gets to be a father - like im sorry but what he did was far worse compared to what ms qin did and she literally got sent home to recuperate her mental health and still gets lectured by the rest of the fam for her actions, even qin and lu ying treat her a lil distantly. Idk, I just wanted something to help vent out all that frustration that didnt need to happen cause someone was a selfish bastard - it would have been better if that author didnt make grandpa lu a father. It just doesnt seem fair that he not only got to raise lu yings son but also his own while qin missed out. Uugghhh I cant believe it, im so annoyed cause the matter was dragged out for so long and the resolution was just brushing it off with one sentence. Like fuuuhhhh author must love grandpa lu to death cause he has the protag aura for sure lol tbh I also dont think they had a right to judge qin like that, like bech boi literally came to lu ying asap and even defended him and took his side when his mother expressed her extreme dislike - idk bout u but that should have shown his character and yet they just brush that off. Honestly feels like noone takes him seriously which is kind of sad cause he obviously loves lu ying more than lu ying loves him. You can see it by how lu ying thinks, it's very much like qin is just a good thing to have but not a necessity, heck he cares more about yang and all that immediately moving when they did even though he was so adamant not to when qin asked. So sad, alas. Thinking bout it like that really made the novel bittersweet. They didnt deserve qin

Light read, there are some loopholes: 1. If the elder Yang is so rich, why Lu Pig (MC) suffered for living, having 3 side jobes per day (from 3 am - 10 pm), e.g. morning street sweeping, marchandising at shopping mall, and pizza delivery takeaway? Why? The relationship is good (at least since the Lu Cub 3 years old or the grandma Lu 'died').

2. They take a hard ride way. E.g. Since Lu Pig (MC) wants to stand in His own feets, he didnt want to go to Guanland city... more>> where ML lived (at least 2-3 years later MC said). But, when elder Yang moved to Guanland, MC moved to Guanland immediately (it was less than a year, before the Lu Cub 7 yo). Why so adamant in the early......... It is inconsistent........

And yeah, this is short story. It is good by the way <<less
