As Zong Yan sat in the classroom, he always felt like the odd man out. His body was there but his soul had sneaked out the window. He wanted to do anything, wanted to be anyone, as long as he wasn’t himself.

He had a cool and unbelievable superpower:

He could extract different persona cards from the void with his bare hands. With a high enough “SAN” value, Zong Yan could become an entirely different being. Superpowers, ancient gods, eldritch powers, even… an Outer God.

Soaring above the dome of the magical city, he was the free-flying son of the wind.

Strolling through the rain-soaked, foggy streets of London, he was the secretive and unpredictable night watchman.

Walking in the extravagance and glamour of New York, he was the sun god who held the light in his hands.

Diving into the geometric city of R’lyeh, he was the indescribable king.

In the gorgeous and colorful world of dreams, he was the original belief in the universe.

Early to bed, early to rise, going to school on time, working late to save the world. A senior at Qingyang High School by day, honors scholar at Miskatonic University by night. Investigating unusual events all over the world during summer and winter vacation, battling wits and courage with evil gods, dedicated to preserving peace and saving a faltering world.

Zong Yan: Thanks, but I’m just an ordinary high school kid.

Despite the inconsistencies which always seem to happen whenever a story uses the real world as the base; I enjoyed it.
I fell in love with the MC and how cringe worthy his chunni behavior is. Actually the author does admit to have that 8th grade syndrome as well so it was quite a treat. This story would’ve been completely different the ML was different and the possibilities are endless.
Speaking of the ML; you can’t expect them to be extremely romantic bcz of their nature. It’s really not possible to have a regular “love” and you really also can’t admonish them when they were being themselves in the truest form.

Anyways enough ranting, but before I end, I wanna say that the ML’s confession is in the top 3 when when it comes to non human MLs ❤️

So cool. Do you know the tiktok vid where it shows the reaction when you start a new fantasy book and you don't understand a thing in the beginning cause of new concepts lol, it was literally like that here but you'll get the hang of it cause we are actually as clueless as Zong Yan hahahaha.

Spoiler

First of all, I'd like to share that I thought Si Yan was the ML lolll, I didn't have any idea how large this world in the novel was and Si Yan was really described cooly in his introduction HAAHAHA and he even ordered the food cause ZY wasn't eating HAHAHAH but then MU happened and then Tawil appeared and the Author said that ML has appeared HAHAHAHHA 🤡 Anw, I like the fantasy, I like how there are photos, although they're at the end and not in the place where it is being described so it can help me imagine while reading, I like how descriptive/informative everything is but still doesn't make me lose interest. I like Zong Yan, the twisted personality or change in personality wasn't that much cause Zong Yan's mind is still the same it's just his external look and actions that are different which was a pleasant surprise cause I do like Zong Yan. The world building must've been hard cause it's so big and this is only a few chapters compared to others with the same tone of story as this one, I liked it. It was a nice surprise. The romance was also perfect, it wasn't abrupt and honestly its okay even if It happened way later cause human and evil (?) or outer (?) god is just a really hard bridge to cross ahahahaha, I like Yog Sothoth development, I understood how he realized his feelings and I accept it cause he literally has all the time in the world so a million years for him can just be a second to a human. I also like how the true bodies were real weird ass looking things cause that's what higher beings probably really look like, not some good looking humanoid. I like how Zong Yan doesn't have too much different powers? Like he is able to use all of them, no excess and no lacking. The arc after Groth was a surprise, didn't expect that, honestly, everything's so weird and unique, I didn't really expect anything, it was good tho. I like the explanation in the end, tho I have to say I kinda skimmed some lines in the other persona cards hehhee I feel bad cause they're all meaningful but I wanted the romance that was cut off hahahah The thing with azathoth was nice, the fact that all of them can actually be azathoth. It's nice, not much side characters, and the side characters have their roles, lol with the flute on new years event and being caught in NY so now ZY has to shoot a movie hahahha. I liked this, a different kind of BL. Thank you! Off to extras!!

Extras were fun! They're only short but they're fun hehe

[collapse]

Reread? I actually can but I think I will remember the plot once I start this again cause it's so different from the others, it's memorable. <<less

if you're scrolling through the reviews to ask if this is the novel to read, i'll tell you that this is exactly what you should be reading right now!!! I really liked the lovecraftian part of the novel and the gradual romance between the two main characters. Just a heads up that this is essentially godxhuman and/or malexmale but it doesn't ruin the story so read it anyways. I'm not a professional at giving views about the plot (holes) and story pacing so all i'll say as a random reader... more>> is that this is a really REALLY good novel to read. <<less

this is one of those novels that are really good even without the romance as the main focal point. The plot, the main character and the side character really makes reading this entertaining. Although the romance is a subplot, it’s still not too mild, and you can clearly see the development between the 2 leads. It truly baffled me that this novel is only rated 4.4 I definitely think it deserves at least a 4.6! I esp love the way the author integrated lovecraftian and eldritch horror into the novel.... more>> Also, props to the translator for pumping out so chapters almost daily with such a high quality translation as well!!! <<less

As a person who has read a lot of books I find this book has at least two bigger problems:

  • the ending came too quickly
  • the author sometimes just skipped interesting parts of the story by going foward half a month or so
  • (plus) the romance just wasn’t really there
I actually started reading this just because of the romance. Actually I guess it also made me continue reading. In the end however I think what made me continue reading was the need to find out what exactly was the protagonist (sorry if... more>> this sounds weird I’m too lazy to add spoilers). And that gave me a little dissapointment. The whole story without the extras was like 125-126 chapters. What happened to the protagonist was revealed in a hurry in the chapter 123 (or maybe 122 or 124 I have a short memory), which as you can count is very close to the ending. I think the author would’ve done better job with how it all turned out.

I guess the author could’ve done better job with the romance too. I think either the author or the translator said something about how the romance is lacking but when it starts ”it’s all there”. I’d recommend you to read this story for the mystery better than the romance. I know I also like to read romance and I know all romance lovers are now probably going to skip this book, but please read a few more reviews to see if you get interested ’cause I suck with reviews. Anyway have a nice time reading if you decided to read this novel :) <<less

When the author called this a chuuni novel she was not joking. The first arc in particular I spent half cringing from second hand embarrassment and half laughing my ass off at the ridiculousness. If you aren't familiar with the mythos, this entire novel reads as a giant conspiracy theory, and it's amazing. The cringe level does go down after a few arcs, or maybe I just got used to it.

MC may be OP but other characters are even more OP, and the author does a great job at balancing... more>> power levels and writing legitimately engaging action scenes. The romance plot exists but it's definitely not the focus, and the overall relationship development is pretty lackluster feeling if I'm being honest. I didn't really mind though, and this is coming from someone who mostly reads novels for the romance.

There's a few things about this novel that could be considered flaws but not enough to dock a rating for me. ML can be a bit inconsistent in his character design but it kind of comes with the territory as it's really hard to write literally the strongest being in the mythos falling in love. All the gods also seem to experience emotion and then lose all emotions whenever the author finds it convenient. I feel like authors all struggle to write emotionless characters though as emotions are such an integral part of experience for us, so I'll give it a pass.

The ending is also just alright for me. It wrapped things up for the main plot, but it felt like something was missing. Maybe because the novel is relatively short feeling, as the relationship development in particular felt like it was thrown in rather than carefully and gradually worked into the plot. One of the only times I'll suggest this with a BL but I feel like the romance was almost unnecessary. I know if there wasn't any that I probably wouldn't have read this though lol, and to be fair, the extras give their relationship some more depth!

Overall though, I had a great time reading and I physically could not stop laughing multiple times. The MC is very likable and each arc is action packed and very engaging. Would definitely recommend, just make sure to read it with an ironic flair and not to take it too seriously in order to get the maximum enjoyment out of the reading experience. <<less

Can't believe I waited so long to read this!! The translation was amazing and I wish it was 10 times longer 🥲❤️ I loved it!

Also, the romance is really a sub-plot. The ML doesn't even like the MC till waaaaaay later in the book, the MC even later 😅 The story is good enough on its own without the romance and the romance is beautifully bizarre and endearing so go for it! I loved that the author didn't compromise on her character settings just to fulfill a normal "romance" and... more>> stuck with what was logical (in her universe). <<less

Love it! It's really great!

I can't believe I almost missed this story ;_; Glad I found it!

A chuuni protagonist, everyone has that time when they dream of being picked up by a weird organization at school right? There was a time, when I even dreamed that the one who picked me up is a magical spaceship looking for me to save their planet XD. Our protagonist here at first thought he's the only human who has a superpower then, after a twist and turns, he's actually a!??

I won't spoil you... more>> guys 😂 Give this book a chance and you'll find it's actually enjoyable. ༼ つ ◕‿◕ ༽つ Anyways I had fun! Thank you author! Thank you translator! <<less

٩ (◕‿◕) ۶ Yay!!! Done! Lovecraftian meets Harrypotter!

Okay, first and foremost this is not your regular ML and MC CP, so don't expect "humanly" kind of emotions from our ML. Second, the romance is super slow burn, the development of their relationship is already at chapters 100, lol. Apparently, the romance is only a subplot.

ML is an omniscient and omnipotent outer god, so you really can't expect human emotions from him. Feelings such as love, sympathy etc is non-existent, as a powerful outer god, he sees human as an ant.... more>> You can't blame him tho, that's his nature in its truest form.

MC is also an OP character, I like that eventhough he's really powerful, he wants to live a simple life as a HS student who saves the world at night. He retained his humanity until the end although he can choose to be an overpower individual.

I love Nyarlathotep, lol. I don't know why, but he's so funny. Also, there's a LOT of "resurrected" well known personalities here.

Overall, a good read. 4.5/5 for me. <<less

YESS, just YES. This was so good. I haven’t enjoyed a novel like this one in a long long time. I love it, from the character to the setting and everything between, but especially the setting. I love the inclusion of the myths, the notes and literally again, everything. The translation is amazing and the ML is also great. Just AMAZING.

Fantastic story.

If you like Lovecraftian horror, this is a very good spin. There's a lot of lore that the author took and did funny little twists to. But don't mistake this story for actual horror, it's not. There aren't any strong horror element aimed to give the reader chills, rather it's more of an action/adventure read.

The story primarily focuses on the MC's coming-of-age and entrance into the metaphysical/magical/superhero community and slowly turning from an outcast loner student into someone admired by everyone in the world.

It's very lighthearted, wish-fulfillment, with comedic... more>> aspects. And the author states that right at the beginning - she wanted to write a chuunibyou story so this is it. A loner high school student who becomes the most powerful ability user, gaining friends, allies, and enemies along the way.

This has many classics of power-up stories like a mysterious skill of unknown origins, encounters with creatures several magnitudes stronger (but surviving all the same), a protagonist halo to rival the stars -- but in a way that's what makes it fun. It unashamedly goes for straightforward, self-aware entertainment.

Although the romance is a subplot, it's not lacking and pretty cute in its own way.

Fantastic translation, highly recommend. Many kudos to translator for the depth of research as well as helpful graphics for the translation! <<less

So even though there were some problems with this story, I found it surprisingly interesting. First of all, the summary, the summary doesn't tell you much. This is a story of the relationship between a human and an Outer God of the Cthulhu Mythos. If you don't know anything about them, most of them are galaxy sized tentacled monstrosities who can destroy the earth if they wake up. Now that's a possible pairing that gets my attention. Luckily the ML has no tent**les just bubbles of energy that burn out... more>> your brain.

Our MC has to negotiate several Outer Gods, and other types of scary evil gods and their minions, not to mentions the cultists who want to revive them and the possible destruction of the planet all while he's trying to pass his college entrance exam and get into a top university.

Negotiating the extreme difference between the two main characters and how they find something in common was an interesting journey. There wasn't too much emphasis on the daily life element, except for how the MC got used to waking up with all sorts of eldritch horrors in his room, or his bath turning into blood, and why having the Lord of Space and Time teach you physics can be a bad thing.

I thought the MC was a good choice. He was practical, well fleshed out, his decisions were consistent with his own moral compass, and he didn't turn into a gibbering lunatic in front of evil, universe destroying gods. The ML was also very interesting because he started with a completely non-human perspective and slowly came to a place where he could and wanted to accept the MC. And it is a relationship where neither pretends to be anything but who they are.

The reason I gave it 4 stars was two things. There were a few troubling opinions from the author regarding people outside of China that I had an issue with but may not bother other people. The second piece was that once the romance really started to take off near the end, there were some fairly substantial side characters who disappeared, and the resolution of one big plot element that was barely touched upon so the ending had some obvious ragged ends.

But I still found it very enjoyable and will recommend it to anyone who wants to find out how the author made such a strange pairing work. Enjoy! <<less

I'm not gonna lie this book is interesting. The plot is great and I enjoyed reading it but the romance is... Now I've read and loved a lot of slow burn romances or stories where romance is the subplot so my problem with the romance isn't this. My problem with the romance is that I can't believe that either character would fall in love with the other. While reading, I could feel the hand of the author making them fall in love and it felt so constructed. I just couldn't... more>> feel the sizzle in their romance. And I really wanted to. But yeah, the romance is a big big detractor cos it just doesn't work. Nevertheless, this is an amazing story and I absolutely enjoyed reading all of it. <<less

To be honest the beginning until chapters 60 are very simple, good, but not addictive because some twists are what we have seen in many other stories which makes it a bit cliché, unexpectedly a change happens that surprised me a little, as if the author injects himself with chicken blood, and the plot increases qualitatively. Anyway, a simple but interesting romance, even sweet from the middle of the romance (that doesn't change the fact that I hate ML in the first half, really.... although his personality is totally in... more>> line with what it should be.. In the end he becomes amorous, but that doesn't change the fact that he's a cold-blooded possessive madman, it's just that the author made so many sweet moments that some end up ignoring this fact).

It's a good story to pass the time and stir up conflicting feelings at times (at least towards ML for the mess he made in the beginning).

Spoiler

I was just sad that Old God C wasn't part of the group... like... I liked him a lot, too bad he was very troublesome and would cause countless fights with ML if he got more involved with the plot than he already had been involved... this would end up taking the plot in a totally different direction from the original, which would be very sad....

Anyway, I just think it would have been nice for him to have a sweeter story, because among the characters I thought he was one of the more lonely and cruel, but at the same time cute and sad, even if he doesn't realize it himself or it's just my exaggeration, since this is in line with the Old God configuration of the story: impossible to measure according to the human standard.

Ever wanted a basically Isekai story with an Op protagonist, but gay? Well this is it. The story focuses a lot on the struggles the MC faces while fighting all kinds of otherworldly creatures. It doesn’t focus on romance at all really, you pretty much have to get to the end of the book to see any romance. If it can even be called that...

But totally a great read, would def recommend it.

that leads to near death experiences and power ups. The novel is easy to read and no information overload or too technical. The author seemed cute, including her after notes each chapter. EVEN HER NICKNAME FOR THE ML IS CUTE AF XD, BUBBLES!!... Kudos also for the translators for their really hard work! They've included a lot of notes and pictures to supplement our reading experience :')

The number of main cast is small and easy to memorize. Everything can be taken with a grain of salt and wack lol. I love and will miss Nyarla (def a chaotic one, and one of my faves xD) and Shub and yes, our ml, and our bby MC. Their dynamics are forever funny and cute. It was fun to read a non-human ML where his being and morality are skewed. As they have focused on such, I wish they've shown more of the other characters since most of the initial ones have been forgotten, when we explore more regarding the truths and future of the MC (including the ML who's always there to guide and support him).

The arc connections are also roughly stitched together with the MC always relying on high lvl brainwash (lmao I just call it that) to make the improbable seem normal and fixed. And afterwards, MC will be loved and praised more. At least the world building seemed huge, with each arc in a different area. Maybe even a different parallel line or time period lol. But because of that, I wish they could have shown more or added more details, especially the later arcs. Though, at the same time, I'm glad that there seemed to be closure nonetheless. The major questions regarding mc's past/future was revealed

(wish for more details but I'm also satisfied with the world building that included the dreamlands and universe and diff timelines) His different identity upgrades, especially at the end is a plus :)

and he had a happy future with our turned-filthy ml.

I've enjoyed it, binged, and maybe would reread some time. It's rare for such genres to blend together to give us this, which I greatly appreciate it. Their personalities were also enjoyable to read and to see them interact. Though, some details could have been refined more all in all. It's a 2.5-3/5 for me :> It really was an immersive read and experience where I couldn't put the book down.

This is the story of Magical Gir- I mean Magical Boy. Okay, I'm half joking. But seriously, it's a lot more than that, okay! It's so much more Mysterious!!! The World Building... The Evil/Outer Gods' Existence... The Power... The Plot... THE STORY FLOWS !!! ITS JUST SOOOO GOOD, OKAY!!! IT DESERVE TO HAVE MANHUA AND DONGHUA VERSION!!! DESERVE TO HAVE ANIMATION VERSION!!! EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW IT!!!

It has Amazing MC. And I'm not talking about his Power, but I'm talking about his character... His Heart. Even after everything he been through.... more>> What he experience and feel. He still stay true to his Heart. He's the kind of Righteous Protagonist that you LOVE!!! I'm serious. He doesn't try to make people understand his thought and feeling. He just do what he feels right. He's tried his best to save the world. He's not selfish, but he also not selfless. He was just a human with unique power and a good heart. He's flawed and he finally saw it later on what his flaw. He NEVER try to shown people that he's Right. He also doesn't judge people even toward the people who had disliked him and showed it.

Honestly at the beginning, before I even try to read this novel, seeing all those many tags in NU, I had a doubt. I thought maybe this novel would be so Dark... Heavy... Depressing... Psycho... Etc. But, eh, I chose to read it anyway. It was Complete and there's School life tag. How Rare is that; an Action Adventure Supernatural Chinese (Danmei) Novel accompanied with School Life tag. And the Protagonist is a High School Student!!! I'm IN!!! And it Did NOT Dissapoint me in the slightest.

The story was going Deep. But the Author write it so Well, and you don't need to understand lot of lore or H.P Lovecraft because the Author themselves explain it in their own way with their own Setting. And even better, the Translation helped!

This Novel is truly Amazing with their Plot, Story Flows, Characters, and the Ending. I personally would call it Perfect because it's Perfect in my Eyes! And I'm wholly Satisfied!!! My Love toward this novel should never be questioned. It's Eternal, for the Eternity and Beyond. <<less

Rating: 4.5

My definition of a good novel has a few requirements. One of those requirements is that the novel cannot be summed up in a few sentences. I would have to stumble on explaining the plot of the novel due to the sheer, yummy complexity of it in order for it to come close to a 5-star rating. I think this novel did that fairly well: the worldbuilding was for the most part great (my 4.5 stars are mostly because the world building could have transcended to a whole new... more>> level with just a bit more thought/depth injected into the novel). The characters were lovable and the relationships had quite a unique dynamic. There were a few areas the novel needed to develop more in and definitely explain a bit more (see slight spoiler), but still enjoyable and definitely has the brimming potential that does not make you sigh with regret but rather look forward to the author's next work.

Spoiler

For example, why was our MC a special existence? Why was he able to attain his special set of powers? What about the side characters? I feel they could have been developed a tad bit more. I was also hoping for the extras to tie up a few loose ends and reveal a good amount of surprising or pleasant revelations, but unfortunately, the novel fell short of that.

[collapse]

Really recommend it to anyone who's a deep hard lover of shounen and also loves a sub-romantic plot of BL thrown in the mix. This novel also exhausted a good deal of my mental power due to the Lovecraft knowledge dump I got, so I shall proceed to do some work. Hope you all enjoy it, as I sure did. <<less

EDIT ACTUAL REVIEW:

It's chuunibyou cringey where the story focused on protagonist's awesomeness as its selling points.

Besides that there are also the almightiness of lovecraftian Gods/Goddess (do they even have genders) and the edginess of the mixing historical figures and facts as part of world building. There is also the unrealistic, but beautiful and passionate romance from male lead in latest chapters.

... more>> If you okay with above explanation, no need to find out more, just go read!

The idea is very fresh and original so it will be an interesting experience even if you dropped it in the middle.

Despite its heavy theme of lovecraftian with some mix of history, it's layman/beginner friendly. If you're know too much, just took it with one eye closed, it's author creative right, no need to be so serious. After all it's chuunibyou story solely for your entertainment.

This author is always high on exciting plot and fresh original idea.

But if you judge it as literature it can be long argument whether it's good or bad...

OLD REVIEW (my annoyance towards the story) + a bit of editting

This is a selfnote to help me get rid some of the annoyance:

  • A mess of quality, this is subjective because there are time when I feel the plot is really awesome and time when it's really painful to read because:
  • tends to be redundant, for example author will write from side characters perspective to their inner monologue which doesn't contribute to the story. And some chapters will not have main characters showed up at all. I appreciate the author's effort to make the side characters alive, but it's often felt excessive. Author will also explain the same things a lot which make it less cool and more cringey. I meant, dear author, you explained it 100th time, can't I be annoyed a bit??
  • I don't understand the main character's personality. His emotion and motivation aren't strong to begin with and easily forgettable between the story. He often felt OOC outside of the influence of his card. he's good boy so I can't hate him. But his heroic act felt a bit like a mix of young man's impulsivity and over-confidence because of his power. Anyway idk.
  • The author didn't do research on small but actually sensitive stuff especially about westerner. either the author has prejudice or deliberately use inccorect fact to boost MC's coolness. both are not good reason. But I don't mind author made up some stuff like about how government works because I also don't need to know that to enjoy the story.
I'm really sorry for editing this a lot, but I felt like have a lot to say but need to write in nicer words... <<less
