Counterattack of the Cannon Fodder Chambermaid

Description

Links are NOT allowed. Format your description nicely so people can easily read them. Please use proper spacing and paragraphs.

First of all, this is not a story where the cannon fodder chambermaid counterattacks and gives the main wife a beat-down!

As a lowly s*ave who had been sold a total of six times, Xiao Hua has long become apathetic to her situation.

In her past life, she was a cannon fodder chambermaid who was beaten to death. In this life, she decided to turn over a new leaf and live honestly, yet in the end still ended up being sold off.

This prince’s estate seems to have pretty good benefits? She could be released at twenty-five, and they’d arrange a place for her to live under their jurisdiction? They’d even get rid of her s*ave records?

Great! That’s great! Xiao Hua thus decided to stay in the Jing Prince Estate and do her job properly. It’s a shame she could never overcome the whims of fate….

The master she serves is a “mute boy”, with several influences above him watching like tigers eyeing their prey. To say she doesn’t want to be pampered is definitely a lie. This is the road to survival of a “discreet girl” who clings on to her master’s leg and is solely pampered, yet feels that he never pampers her.

The road from a cannon fodder chambermaid to a beloved imperial consort is a little long….

I am uncomfortable

Spoiler

"To refuse, she definitely didn't dare refuse, and didn't dare think of the consequences of such a refusal. He was the master, and she was the servant. She was already scared of Eunuch Fu, let alone Eunuch Fu's master his highness the Jing Prince."

Also I'm sorry but I have to say this somewhere bc I keep screaming it occasionally in my room but: SHE IS 14. SHE IS FOURTEEEENNN OK ANCIENT CHINA GO OFF LOVE U U MAKE ME SO COMFORTABLE WITH pedifilia BECAUSE HE IS 25. Ok honestly it's fine, if you aren't expecting this from an ancient China novel you're just as dumb as me but I have modern soft sensibilities and it hurts me

[collapse]

This is the epitome of why bosses and superiors have unequal romantic relationships with subordinates and is not ok.

Ok I understand this is an ancient China novel. Totally aware and honestly hats off for the realism but I CAME HERE FOR ROMANCE OK NOT A NONFICTION FICTION NOVEL OK. Meaning this is not the romance buildup I signed up for. She just got PIMPED OUT MAN.

Cries. I know. But goddamn the writing and translation is so good. I really hope when he finally learns to care about her (I will read on to see) that he suffers a sh*t ton for how he treated her in the beginning.

Honestly the sadness I feel for her freewill, future, and
Spoiler

basically it's r*pe but to be very very fair, what can you expect with an overly privileged handsome prince but to expect the whole world wants to f*ck u so therefore of course it's not r*pe in his mind... but god damn it's so sad how she was treated there. I'm really trying to be understanding bc I am not joking with how f*cking good this writing is

[collapse]

How sad I feel is a testament to the poisonous good writing... I hate myself for continuing

But damn I'm uncomfortable

Spoiler

ok whatever we're not dumb of course we understand historical context on why it's written that she should be f*cked by a 25 yr old at 14 and expected to give birth in ancient China, but ARE WE GONNA DENY THE FACTS WE KNOW TODAY SCIENTIFICALLY AND THEREFORE HOW HEARTLESS THIS IS TO HER? Ultimately yes it's more realistic to do this to her. But f*ck it if I feel nothing but uncomfortability and low key disgust for how they treat her like a breeder and barely a human. Child pregnancy happen now. There is a documentary on this sh*t in Africa about 10-14 yr girls giving birth and then THEY CANNOT REGULATE THEIR PEE aka their pee cannot be held in because THEY ARE RIPPED UP. So I mean idk if she actually gets preggers at 14 I haven't gotten that far but ok yes if you want realism don't forget to write about the side affects. Shit. That's why it makes it so hard to read. If only this good writing didn't TEASE ME SO TO CONTINUE AHHH

[collapse]

Holy sh*t there's no romance as far as I see now hello?

At 65, dropped it. Maybe things change bc they probably will but I don't recommend this for people who are looking for romance. For people generally looking for a well written novel, go for it but I other than that, the relationship is lacking imo. <<less

What I like about it:

  • I like the FL and ML's interactions
  • ML's character development
What I don't:

  • They both met for around ch 25++
  • I get that FL is a reincarnated chara and there's a need to introduce her life from before and the 'present' but I think the Jinxiu (??) Estate arc dragged on for TOO long. Most of it is not even relevant to the story. I feel like a short 10 chapters will do if there's really a need for it but it took a damn 25++ chaps for both of them to meet.
  • The politics/struggle for the crown part of this story is not appealing for me. I literally just skipped all those chapters or parts that mentioned the other princes, emperor, empress, and the situation in the capital and I i don't even feel like I missed something.
Im not really sure why it didn't look enticing to me when im the type to read stuff like that. Maybe it's bec I feel like I can just go on with the romance between the FL and ml. Or maybe bec I don't feel like it's "that" significant.

I know I'm almost there but I am dropping this @ ch160 bec I feel like im just wasting my time.

This is honestly an underrated gem. Personally, I liked this a lot cuz it had a lot of qualities I liked. Though it might seem a bit dull or too fluffy for others or even maybe some are turned away by some of the tags, its a pretty decent if you ask me.

The story had a steady plot, while the MC is someone sent back from the past (as we've all seen for like, everywhere) she already freed herself from the events of that life quite early and had herself... more>> facing a new road in her life quickly. I quite liked that she wasn't a miss of some household but a s*ave instead, it really gives you a picture of how difficult it was to live as a servant woman in the ancient times and how small the world s*aves back then lived in, where their fates are simply just like playthings on the hands of their masters. It was nice to watch mc's journey from the ground up to eventually finding her happiness & freedom and more.

I guess this one has a similar vibe to <Eight Treasures Trousseau> only that the MC isn't a transmigrator but is living their second life after living a tragedy. MC has grown from her mistakes and has became a much more rational, clever and independent after suffering. Her & ML's character development journey was such a precious sight, all the while adjusting & struggling from external factors. Also, one thing I liked in this novel was probably the touch of realism in their relationship, the pampering and doting overload made me fluffy all over coupled with a bit of spice here & there (a lot of times tbh, which I quite loved hehe). Anyways, , , , I guess all I have to say is this is a worthy read for me. <<less

It was okay. Pretty long read so if you really have time, it's a pretty good read. Honestly though, it felt a bit boring at the start because it had so much similarity with 'Jin Wang Dotes on His Concubine' so I skipped a lot of chapters haha. I initially thought that the ML was the first husbando but thankfully it's not.

Pretty satisfying story and once it moves on to the main plot it was really addicting that I stayed until 6 am to finish it... Also the ending was... more>> great, in addition there are a lot of side stories.

Overall, pretty good read and I liked the dynamic of ML and MC :) Like what others said, MC gives off Lucia vibes but as for the ML, he really is the 'calmest' ML that I know of, lol. ML gives off vibes from the ML from Hidden Marriage.

Go ahead and read, I'm glad I didn't listen to bad reviews and seriously read the good ones. It's really worth it ^-^ <<less

This story started off 5-star worth but immediately fell in my eyes in chapter 137 and it really went against my belief and moral so I stopped reading there. If any of the fans are indignant for that, sue me.

The novel started off quiet and slow, it focused on side-characters a lot but nicely written. When the FL and ML finally got together it got to be quite intense for a bit and then really domestic afterwards. So domestic that it could be really boring. But no matter, afterwards, you'll... more>> be faced with another big court intrigue and drama where everything fell into places because of the ML's reborn.

You want to know why I gave this story a one-star? Read some spoilers below (though, if you read this, you shouldn't be too mindful with spoilers since the author often spoiling her own story in her author notes.)

Spoiler

Precisely at chapter 137, I went from 'quite fond' of the FL to 'I hate her, she's so annoying.'

That's a feat, I'm telling you. I could be really biased to MCs that I like. What makes me hate her?

She threatened the ML with the children. She threatened the ML that if he ever left her in a comfortable living place filled with maids and servants, she'll kill her children and then herself by drowning.

All because she was under the impression that the ML will leave her for his principal wife when the ML cannot divulge her the real reason he was about to leave her because he was going to be involved in the struggle of thrones and wanted to keep her safe.

Another commenter had said that she was a proper woman from that period and stuffs, hence, her action is 'logical' and not as forward as modern women. She's not.

She already went through a lifetime, yes. She's a frog at the bottom of the well, yes. But dang. She threatened him with the children. And she crossed my bottom-bottom line.

She threatened to kill her children along with her. She's no longer human in my eyes. Only an emotional monster filled with manipulation. In that moment, I see her previous life, a dirty and desperate pauper seducing her master and fighting with other harem women selfishly for attention. That past life she preached to herself that she'd never be again? She still do it. Disgusting. Her real dirty personality has yet to be shed off completely with mere one death.

She might not be a modern transmigrated woman and not as forward. BUT!

She's not a mere teenager madly in love, she's been in the harem before. She's been in the bussiness before. She had LIVED A LIFETIME. Despite her phobias and fear, she's still a freaking old woman at heart. HOW CAN SHE BE THIS CHILDISH?!

She's irrational and manipulative. The true victim of this is not only Jing Prince who was emotionally inadequate but also her young children who don't even know anything. She used them here. Whether it's intentional or not, she used them. Cruelly, in fact.

She manipulated them selfishly because of her abandonment issue and I despise her for that. I had grown quite fond of her ever since the earlier story and this one chapter destroyed that entirely. I don't get what the author's thinking. She had tried hard to make this story "believable" and I appreciated her for that. But what Xiao Hua doing in this is all but a plot convenience for whatever melodrama she's planning.

No self-respect women would ever threaten to kill her children just because her man wanted to leave her. Her abandonment issue made her a monster. I refuse to think she's a woman.

[collapse]

Ugh, and here I though I'd found another novel that I would see till the end. Disappointing. <<less

What I found quite amazing in this story was my change of perspective when the ML's tr*shy uncle and his family was introduced in the story. At first, I found them very annoying and had thought they would have a terrible ending or something like most ML/MC in other novels did when dealing with tr*shy relatives. However, I was surprised when the ML and MC treated the tr*shy relatives as a type of amus**ent and even made it a game. It made me from being annoyed at them to finding them amusing as well. The family was dealt with in the end in a surprisingly harmonious and kind of funny manner.

I like the story, author's writing style not makes me bored. Translator doing pretty good job translating it (9/10). MTL-ing the rest of story makes my head hurttt, I just understand rough idea of it.

The story itself pretty realistic for me. MC and ML not too OP, they get their ability through prev experience and hardwork. I enjoy MC's slice of life being a maid, how she tried to avoid getting the same fate like prev timeline. Their relationship not happening just one night and they love each other but,... more>> they slowly tried to understand each other and finaly realize their love. <<less

And the MC is quiet something when she is reborn she only wants a quiet life yet when the eunch search for new palace maids she give him a second glance if she acted cowardly she wouldnt have been chosen since she was reborn she could know how to avoid the problems then she grows greedy for the MC protection then love then she wants be... more>> the only one to monopolise him a true blue blooded prince and even with her lowly status and her younger age she wants only family then she is again greedy due to her young age the servants arrange secretly so that the children are born small yet she forgots that the ML wife with greater statut can take her children if she wanted <<less

It's a slow slow burn and like the summary says there is no revenge or plot twist. The second half of the book still has a bit more going on but because the POV is from the concubine's side, a lot of the palace related plot just gets explained in a few lines.

Good :

Slow burn with genuine connection between the leads in the 2nd half of the book.

... more>> Female leads decisions make sense in connection to her history.

Bad :

At the beginning neither of the leads are interested, so you will feel very uncomfortable reading the intimate scenes. In modern books when the leads simply sleep with each other, you know that the female lead is also interested in the male lead. Here, they only think that the other is good looking but end up sleeping with each other because they were drunk and then because the male lead liked sleeping with the female lead. It takes a long (too long) before the female lead decides to take genuine interest in her husband.

Plus the female lead ends up becoming the Empress, when it's clear her low birth will not allow that to happen. I would have liked for her to continue being the favored concubine.

It's obvious that the male lead in pretty smart in the 2nd half when dealing with his ministers. I wish the writer had explained his ascension a bit more. That was obviously a clever plot line.

The female lead being of low birth bring nothing to the table for the Emperor. He keeps her hidden in the 2nd part and she doesn't interact with other rich wives in 3rd part. I wish they had shown that despite her low birth, she grew her power in the Harem on her own.

Conclusion :

If you manage to get through the 2nd part, the 3rd part is much more interesting. Don't expect a super clever Empress, this is more of a supporting role of the female lead in her own story. <<less

I loved the story and got invested reading halfway. The first half was promising and I liked Xiao Hua's journey on how she ended up as a concubine to the ML. I liked reading about her struggles, her loneliness, and her conflicting views basically her struggle in opening up to the ML and adjusting to her new position. But once she secured the ML's affection, the tone and flow of the story kinda fell through.

Specifically how the story shifted from the inner harem to the struggle of succession.

Even tho the way the miscommunication happened was kinda s*upid but it was a good plot to hook me back bec it gave the FL who's so dependent on the ML a chance to widen her world outside him instead of only being the good obedient mistress and have a chance to live for herself and her children. It also gave the children a shot at having a normal childhood with other children to play with and also introduce wise older characters that serve as a good guardian and teacher to the FL which I noticed the author is good at whenever the FL is in a new environment (Granny Wang, Nana He, and the old commoner lady next door). Definitely a plus point in my book since I love these kinds of tropes that serves as a plot device and calls out the protagonists flaws and help them better their character.

Overall, I liked the East Yuling alley arc next to Jing Estate arc. It was nice but could be executed better. The FL and ML making up wasn't satisfactory enough, there really wasn't any substantial change in the two protagonists power dynamics aside from better communication/no secrets between them. The ML still treats the FL the same and the FL is still heavily dependent on him.

Her character arc of relying on herself, respecting her emotions, and making her point was basically thrown out of the window once the ML finally told her what's happening and then collected her back.

Afterwards it goes meh from there. The plot moving forward was actually okay but it lacks depth and the FL and ML became one-dimentional, flat, and uninteresting. At this point, it's no different from other romance stories where both the ML and FL are so harmonious, they receive all the good things without struggle, there's no conflict between them and all those that comment or oppose are harshly rebuked and dealt with.

There were so many opportunities in the capital arc where the author could have deepen the FL/ML's character but sadly missed. The execution of the story and the other characters could've been handled better imo.

I've mostly felt morally uncomfortable on the latter half of the story once the rear palace conflict started.

It's starting to seem like a story about a good mistress and a righteous husband conspiring together to overthrow the evil main wife.

The FL is becoming too much of a white lotus her personality is getting lost in her portrayal as the good trusting wife and mother of ML's children. She doesn't even dare to have thoughts and just shoves things at the back of her mind or shoves them to the ML to handle.

Where's her agency at this point? It's like once she secured herself she became a blank character again which was a pity as if she reverted back to her unguarded self in her previous lifetime.

My main criticism is how self-absorbed the FL and the lack of empathy and understanding towards other women. I guess this is the drawback of being pampered and spoiled and failing to see other people's struggle outside of her own.

It's as if she lost herself once she reached favor imo. While she's no longer impulsive, arrogant, and learned how to be careful, I prefer her personality pre-concubine.

It's human nature to be empathetic to the underdog. And the FL had long stopped being the disadvantaged and pitiful once she became the favored concubine. Which I guess explains why I lost interest along the way and discontent with the way the FL (lack thereof) handled things.

No matter how you pretend to be good, it doesn't change the fact that your position is still a concubine who has robbed the main wife her rights. Which doesn't make you innocent. The author may justify it by painting Xiao-shi as a "bad" person in both lifetimes but it's clear that the ML and FL aren't any better. It's just irritating to read them act hypocritical and the other character's fate is just too cruel.

It doesn't hurt to admit that they've also wronged other people even if they never physically harmed them.

If the situation was reversed a lot of people would surely have been raising their pitchforks to the concubine that hogged someone else's husband.

I would've preferred the FL lead to have been empathetic towards other women. This is why I rated this below other novels like To be a Virtuous Wife mainly bec how other FLs treat other women in the harem. Ironically I guess it's too much to ask for a traditional woman to be tolerant of her husband's other women. And Xiao Hua is a very perfect definition of a traditional woman. <<less

i struggled to finish this, tbh. I read fierce consort first and enjoyed it very much so I followed up with this. Don't get me wrong the story is good, the flow isn't bad either. Honestly its kinda werid bc usually I dont really like maid tropes MC, plus she aint transmigrated person or having any golden finger, no OP at all.

But this is the charm! Giving such a realistic thoughts of a women during that ancient shitty time. She could be vicious enough but she still thoughts of life very dearly and would not kill you, she has kind yet weak heart. There's one event where I thought she's so annoying but then again I realize, she's not a modern person, she aint a... more>> cultivator nor having golden finger, she's just a chambermaid and living her entire life in ancient times, ofc she had those thoughts!

She's not a baddie. She would rather endure than strike back. Most of the time passive but sometimes she can bite your ass.

She's rather bland for me since I like those fierce lil baddie, but her chara is likeable tho, cute and daring esp in few event.

But I really like how both FL and ML showed their way of interact? Someone surely will not agree but idk man they feel peacfull to me. Both of them were a quiet type, esp the prince since hes rarely talk but I like it where it shown that ML likes to stroke FL hair while FL likes to hold his fingers, and both of them would do so quietly while doing their own business like reading a book.

For the r@pe parttttttt then again this setting take in ancient time.. She's a sl@ve, and the other is her master. She reject = she die, story end! This is the most yikes part in ancient setting story, we will (mostly) encountered such an event in those kind of ancient time setting, plus the title is chambermaid..... Idk man...

Spoiler

Dont worry for the segs scene. ML didnt viciously make her couldnt walk for three days, couldnt blame him for everything since he saw everyone in his mansion as his own which is he could do anything to them since that what its thought to him for sure, hes a prince anw. And again he would stop when FL said its painful, and he learn from those mistakes by learning from somebody LMFAO so yea in next segs, FL said she really enjoy it 🥴btw FL aint passive in segs, she even teach him some ways to make her and both of them 'happy' 🤫 for the r@pe imo its in first till second segs (?) bc she enjoyed the rest (iirc) and ML always said he cherised her b4 making out :)

[collapse]

SUGGEST : dont ever read ancient setting novels really you will mostly encountered r@pe part

Btw oot but at this point I dont even yk get weird ass confusion if this story telling a maid turned into empress. I mean in ancient time everything could really happend tho, as long as you have those requirement esp beauty and emperor favor ofc.

AND ALSO for Qiao shi and Ruan siyi story, dude could've write better ending for that poor woman. Why would she end up with the person who disgrace her, humilate her, trampled her, and making her insecure maybe almost gone crazy for years?!

The first time line even worse, bc RY still live gracefully, QS life was no better than dying, and even when she died she have no child bc that poop rat RY would not touch her jst bc she's ugly :)

I hate this idea. She should've end up with a man who loves her more than anything instead of some douche who realize his wife worth after his family misfortune making him a commoner lol, and he start noticing he bc she loses weight....... Mmmm wtf.... <<less

This is one of those rare novels where it truely feels like it takes place in ancient times. As such. You have to keep in mind the customs of those days, and only then will you appreciate how the story goes. Some are upset the ML isn't "Clean", but it truely suits the story (it would be crazy if he was at that age according to the customs). And the way their relationship progresses is naturally satisfying.

I am honestly slighty disapointed that he did manage to raise her that... more>> high given her status, but I guess fantasy does need a bit of ompf to it, and at the very least it was done in a logical manner.

I sincerly reccomend the story to all, and the epilogues are satisfying.

Decent novel with development of the female lead from a maid to a favoured concubine, you do end up feeling bad for the main wife in this novel actually all the way right to the end. The FMC is basically kept in a greenhouse and sheltered by the male lead with very little intrigue or schemes due to how thorough he is and how she herself hardly puts herself in bad situations.

The start of this novel details her life on the lowest rung, the middle section is the lovey dovey... more>> parts and the end is where she's at the pinnacle of life with some schemes in between. Mask Feast writes very realistic historical fiction, including power/class/gender inequity. This is NOT fluff.

FL is a reborn maid in Ancient China. In her previous life she was an ambitious maid who climbed the young master's bed to get ahead as a concubine, but ended up dying in a harem scheme anyway. This life, she wants to keep her head down, stay an honest maid, and age out of servitude.

Unfortunately, she gets caught up in a noble household's mess and is sold far away to a desolate vessel Prince's estate. She... more>> ends up as that ML Prince's maid.

He's got a small harem he ignores, she can't say no since she's just a maid (so avoid this novel if you get triggered), and he's very awkward and stilted. Somehow, over a few years, his EQ rises and they end up in a honeypot sweet romance and it's a loyal, sweet, happy ending all around, as they become monogamous Empress and Emperor, he's a great Emperor outwitting his officials, and there's even epilogues of their own children's marriages.

For some reason, there are very, very few historical BG novels being completely translated (almost all completely translated Chinese novels lately have been BL/Yaoi/Shounen Ai), so I'm going to rate this 5 stars to thank the translator for finishing the translation and because I like this novel. If you like Eight Treasure Trousseau or To Be A Virtuous Wife, you'll like this.

Spoiler

The FL is reborn, the ML Prince is reborn (in his first life he died after his brother ascended the throne, so this life, he's going to take it for himself), there's another brother Prince (who is the ML of The Lofty Fierce Consort who is on his third life after being transmigrated, then reborn again), and a friendship with a transmigrated girl (who is the FL of the Prestigious Family's Young Lady and the Farmer).

Okay, now I have to go read The Lofty Fierce Consort and the Prestigious Family's Young Lady and the Farmer, since the novels all intersect. <<less
