First of all, this is not a story where the cannon fodder chambermaid counterattacks and gives the main wife a beat-down!

A really great novel. The translation is top notch too.

It's really realistic development vise and the author is really diligent with researching about history. The progress from indifference ---> convenience and resignation ---> fondness ---> love was really well done.

I like the MC and disagree with some of the other reviews about her not using her head in the 2nd part of the novel. She used it well by not complicating her life and knowing what kind of person ML was and making her choices accordingly. Based on her life... more>> and the times she lives in, the fact that she has a strong sense of 'acting according to her status' and yielding to ML's behavior is understandable. She didn't transmigrate nor was she reincarnated with memories of a modern world. She regressed after having lived a few years as a concubine in a s**tty young master's courtyard and was beaten to death, and all of that was because she schemed and fought, so her choosing not to do that unless needed is pretty understandable.

As for the ML, kind of dislike, but kind of like? I dislike that he is, without a doubt, the most realistic depiction of a high ranking man. The disregard for all who he sees as lower than him and inability to actually consider others is real. Tho it does get better as the story progresses, his word and whim is law. Possessiveness is low key because it's never focused on but very obvious. <<less

A very slow burn in all ways, and not very graphic when it comes to steamy scenes. The romance between the two leads is extremely emotionally satisfying because of how unwavering it is. Skip the author notes if you want to avoid spoilers but read them if you don’t mind spoilers and enjoy cuteness, b/c the author is cute?

MC and ML are both very lowkey people but this also added to a bit of a realistic flare to both. Luo Jing and Xiao Hua kept with the conventions of the time but also gave off the feeling that they wanted to break free from such albeit passively because they were both reincarnators. However, neither of them would be willing to take a beating and retaliate if needed be.

Personally, I find the side-characters are really what brought the story together. I especially have a soft spot for the Eunuch... more>> and the Court Lady who accompanied Luo Jing and later supported Xiao Hua. But all in all, the writer did well in keeping things linear and not adding a lot of minor characters or side-arcs.

The story had a quite a bit of bedscene teases but wasn't too graphic about it though I think the author did well in slowly making such scenes more intimate.

The story was really more focused on fleshing out relationships of characters and how they react to situations in a rather realistic manner. I wouldn't call it political intrigue or downright fluff but more something in the middle. I would recommend it for people looking for a political romance novel that's not too sweet but not to mind-boggling as well. <<less

It was a surprisingly good read with a lot of feels. I enjoyed the storyline, the characters, and the smut was good too. Kudos to the translator too, for doing a great job!

What surprised me was how I was so drawn into the story without realising it. Because I am always aware that I am reading a piece of fiction, I almost never get too emotional.

But my heart ached along with Xiaohua's, when she took her children and two loyal maids away from Prince Jing, thinking that he had betrayed her. That whole arc was amazing, and deserving of the five stars alone!

To the other reviewers who rated this poorly because they viewed the ML as having non-consensual s*x with the MC, I have to disagree. Read it in context, it's ancient China. Besides, I didn't think it was non-consensual. Rough yes, but she knew what was happening and clearly accepted it as her fate.

Reader can really feel where did she stumble in the past and how MC is not fixing but avoiding calamity in her next life as much as she could, she is no OP MC- she gets setback and everything but she preserve with true wit but at the same time you can feel she is REALLY desperate in saving herself in every steps.
Funniest thing about how MC get together with ML is very realistic too in case you see what rank she hold, there's no love at first sight or anything. They basically both like quiet, ML is quiet to the point he is deemed a mute weirdo and not even her loyal vassals can deny it in their heart their master is weird.
MC also didn't understand her hubby either most of the time, she even use his closest vassal as some sort of barometer to act accordingly LOL and continue getting confused by their strange relationship but too timid and cautious to make a comment.
She just rolls with his eccentrics and go with his flow for most part.
His other women would have died from heart attack if they know our little flower MC just know good massage and how to keep her mouth shut to get his favor.

Love it. Love it. LOVE IT.

Our Xiao Hua is the definition of a steady and calm protagonist. Contrary to the popular trope, she didn't because OP just because she reincarnated. It just gave her some wisdom and skills to help her through her journey. This couple is really sweet, really sweet my heart aches. The author is brilliant. And the translator is amazing.

Do you know how many homeworks and classes I've missed because of this gem😭😭It's still worth it tho...

For the smut readers - although the scenes aren't that descriptive. Author just doesn't gloss over it and still gave vague sentences, which makes this snu snu loving reader a satisfying time. Also READ THE TAGS

It's a very heart warming novel. A little slice of life. I like all the characters' personalities and the little extras at the end of the novel regarding the supporting characters were really satisfying. Some people don't like these extras like I do but why read if you don't like? Just skip them and no need complain while reducing star-rating. Thank you for the wonderful translation of this amazing novel.

I love the story and the plot but I have a few regrets that I want to mention.

First is the outcome of the Original Empress, I kinda pity her. It is not her fault but also her fault. Ahh, how do I say this, the environment of her life is not good. It influences her in a bad way that I don't know what to think about anymore. I wish more for her. I want a second life for her to relieve the regrets and mistake that she made. She's... more>> a pitiful person coz she's just a woman. I kinda feel bad how she lives on her life. She's one of the few who really made me cry. Her ending is miserable. Emotionally tormented and physically disabled because of her illness.

Second is the outcome of Ruan Siyi and Qianshi. It's not a regret tho but I also kinda feel bad for the both them. They live a satisfying life in the end. Made me cry for awhile. Although I wish Ruan Siyi made up his mind and see through things clearly and rationally in the first place and for Qianshi to made up her feelings and be rational in her actions then they would not suffer much but instead live a comfortable life early on. But anyway, their ending is the best, they could make a better comeback and live a life that is full of life.

Third is the outcome of Concubine Qian. She is smart, not that devious, and also only a woman who wishes to have a child. A man to rely on but never happened. Just like the Orig Empress. She's also one who I feel bad on and kinda pity them for the way they live their life. She can still give birth and is fertiel so it is okay for her I guess, there is still hope. Her ending is one I can say that only so-so. Not bad but also not good.

Overall it is a very good read. A satisfying one. Good for binge-reading since it's completed.

For the translation, the first ones is really thoroughly translated. I kinda had a headache of the few chapters before the Epilogue coz there are some words that don't match-up at all. Just like Yiyi, she's the daughter right (?) But the way it was described was (he, him). There are many more of that example. Made my head ache for awhile. But overall the translation is good. <<less

The plot is well-paced and unique with great characters. There's also plenty of fluffy/funny moments and the translation is top-quality, but still.... *sigh*

I feel bad for MC.

She tried her hardest to live her 2nd life honestly and drama-free, but still ended up being "schemed" against and became a concubine.... but I appreciate her ability to adapt and still put herself first. I absolutely love her confidence.

Was not expecting ML to be a reincarnator too, but his resolve and resoluteness to survive in his 2nd life was very refreshing.

I love this novel. I cannot stop reading it. I bench read it for 3 days straight.

It's cool how the author bring you something shocking just when your about to lose interest.

The translator did a great job at translating the novel that they even included all the author notes. Thank you very much Translator-san. I love you!

I recomend this story if you want cute children, funny side characters, shocking small events, right amount of sexy time and lovely lead couple.

I love this story. Even there was a harem drama but with a man who love you wholeheartedly and do anything for your happiness it was a dream for every women.

Who doesn't want man like this. You don't have to put an ounce of energy to fight other women who want to be a third party. He deal with it I like it.

This is a gem. It's a slice of life with the MC who is a servant who just wants to live a good life. It's a sweet story about how the MC and the ML got together.

I understand how some people might be repulsed with the r*pe. But in ancient times, servants can't really do anything about it. They are owned by their masters and their lives can be snuffed out in a flick of a sleeve, their bodies more so.

i just finished reading and I'm thoroughly happy with this novel. The ending is not rushed and it's such a happy end after a rough road. I love the notes the author leaves on some of the chapters explaining some actions of the characters and leaving clues for the readers. The translator is also very good. I surmised the novel was affected by the restriction in China so some of the snu snu was edited by the author, but the translator translates from the raw so the snu snu is... more>> translated and she sometimes also translates the edited version as a footnote (so generous of her).

Both the characters reincarnated but what's awesome is that these characters are not revenge-driven, but rather tried to change their fate differently. The MC knew she was wrong during her previous life and just wanted to live quietly with her new life, while the ML learned his lesson from his previous life and tried his best to prevent the same thing from happening on his new life.

The characters have no special talents but they are both prudent and sincere and they understood each other well. No mushy love lines, but rather a series of small gestires that shows their affection. The ML doesn't talk much but he can be very cute with the MC at times. There is a r#pe tag but like others said, it's normal for ancient themes and as what the review here mentioned, the ML is no snu snu expert at first and just swoops in for the ride but the MC learned to open up to himto tell him it hurts so he became more gentle and even learned to do it properly. (Quite a bit of smut here).

The ML reminded me a little of the MLs in How to be a Virtuous Wife and in Eight Treasures Trousseu in a way that he operates covertly in taking the throne, he didn't resolve to violence but let thet the other candidates fight by themselves while he lies in the shadow.

She really just wants to live peacefully. Even when she knows the threat to herself because the Prince only favors her and nobody else, she is very careful bit never tried to hurt anybody and only counterattacked when others attacked her children. Even then, she was not cruel and did not kill the vicious and jealous women eventhough she tried to annoy so e of them to death.

I highly recommend this novel. The start is a bit slow and the romance is slow but it has a good pacing, a very good story and an awesome translation. The characters do not act s*upid, and there are some note worthy side characters who cares deeply for the OTP, it's definitely heartwarming. <<less

I love this author, his stories are always very realistic and the characters don't feel empty.

I loved the extras of mc's ex-husband and his wife, I really recommend reading this, it's a very good read

My native language of English so hopefully at least my review is readable :)

If you’re looking for a calm FL and not much of a mary sue then this will suit your taste. Before reading this, kindly remember that this is set in ancient china and also remember the status of our dear fl, not nobility, not a commoner, not someone from the brothel but a s*ave. This is as realistic as it can be, that you can’t help but understand why the “bad” girls did what they did, why they want to climb their master’s bed, why they get envious of the... more>> pretty girl, you know what I mean. Simply because s*ave life is frikking hard so they do what they can to somehow escape from being one.

For the ML, don’t get your hopes too high in the beginning. He isn’t the doting type, at first. Just read it though. Seriously the character development for the ML is so good. One of the positive notes in this novel.

A bit of a tearjerker as well. There was a chapter at around 90+ where I cried like a baby. This is one of those novels where you can’t help but sympathize with the bad guys especially with our fl’s situation.

With all that said, I kinda still can’t get over the age setting. I know it’s supposed to be set in ancient china but I can’t help but think how immature I was when I was still 14 yet here goes our FL doing all these things. Lol😅 Still good though. Read this everyone <<less

A unique story. Reincarnation without revenge mode. The story is not overly complicated and chaotic (you know, family names, politics related). I kind of like the pace and flow (and the author's note is funny) and although it is almost into the "slice-of-life" it is not, and it's not boring because there are stories / development to tell.

In this story, the MC is neither di nor shu born but a lowly born maid. So, I appreciate the uniqueness POV from 'maid', you know --- not overly intelligent and calculative to... more>> make scheme, but MC is still acting on her level. Also my first time seeing the ML takes care everything - front court and rear court.

Another uniqueness is that both MC and ML are reincarnated. Even there are 2 more characters are reincarnated (definitely will check the novel out after translated). Since they choose a different way of life, naturally everything is not the same as in their previous life.

Also much appreciated the throne battle is explained short! Otherwise (as the author stated) it will take loooooonnnnggg time to conclude.

This novel is really a very slice of live of the chamber maid kinda story. The MC and ML not op but relies on their previous memories to get by. The details are very realistic the story are very I tune on that time. So you will feel the heartache for the characters especially for the woman and s*aves or poor ppl at that time. The only cheat MC has for her reincarnation is her luck is pretty good. ML is an ancient royal man at that time, so many... more>> may not like him at first but he redeem himself later. The only oc for this ancient man is he totally doted on this chambermaid.
Even though is a reincarnated kinda story but the whole Setting can be said they just want to avoid disaster from their previous lives and lives the best they can and find thier own happiness. The plot is not heavy or overyly dog blood or lots of senseless faceslapping. Author is funny And the translator is excellent.

It’s a good read for a little down to earth light read. Thank you <<less

I love a strong FL that thinks straight. I also love a great, informative, and funny author. This isn't some sort of "i want the leads to be op" novel. The author has done a lot of research into the chinese history and used historical facts to set his story. Therefore, the FL does not magically become some genius after rebirth. Her personality has matured, but it did not change too much. Overall, this is a great novel. I recommend reading this for sure.

I really like this story. Although I love the stories where the ML and MF are pure and love only the other, this story is a lot more realistic to the time. The ML and MF have both been reincarnated and their actions and motivations seem very consistent with the time period or current culture that has been described. Have not finished the story yet, but I am enjoying this very much and will likely go look up the first novel as well (set in the same franchise and time).
