“I was in a one-sided love.”

On a rainy night, Seo-yu was standing on the Mapo Bridge to die.

Unlicensed high school student Sung-hyun, who was passing by, was surprised to see him and causes an accident.

Sung-hyun proposes a deal to Seo-yu, saying that his brother is going to kill him.

“You, I will give you money, so please help me tell my brother.”

Seo-yu decides to receive 3 million won and lies to Sung-hyun’s older brother, Sung-hoon.

But Sung-hoon, who is familiar with Sung-hyun’s personality, doesn’t believe it.

“How much did you get?”

“….”

“I’m asking you how much he paid you.”

“Ahaha. You really don’t trust people. I didn’t take it.”

Sung-hoon seems to believe only when Seo-yu shows his determination.

He finally received 3 million won on the day the work was completed.

He secretly contacted Sung-hyun first and told him the promised price, but the person changed and Sung-hoon appeared instead of Sung-hyun.

“It’s been a while, Seo-yu-ssi.”

Why is his older brother here?

Will Seo-yu be able to overcome this crisis well?

Really enjoyable! I love reading about the MC's process of healing and moving forward. I've never read or know anyone with depression and survivor guilt so it was interesting and insightful to read about something like that. I love the ML's family and their interactions with each other and with the MC. I also learned a lot about South Korea and their "su*cide bridge." I also really liked how the novel started when the MC was at the bridge and how the MC moved on at the bridge. Really a... more>> huge symbolism there, especially about the black waters. Also enjoyed reading about the MC's character growth from the beginning to as the novel progresses. This novel really got me feeling all kinds of feelings after reading!

Many thanks to the translator for their amazing well-edited translation; my reading experience was really smooth! Really beautiful writing! The author's writing is very important to how and to what degree the MC's feelings got conveyed to the readers and I think personally the author did an amazing job of their writing. I really sympathized with the MC, even though I've never personally had his experience. BUT I've also laughed at and facepalmed at some moments because of how dense he was! Communication is important!

For me, this novel will always be unforgettable because I really did enjoy reading about the MC's process of healing, moving forward, and his character growth. <<less

It's hard to honestly rate this novel due to the translations. It is mtl edited so it causes a lot of the text to sound awkward and loses a lot of nuance. Due to the translations, it is hard to enjoy and feel the true extent of the emotions the author tried to convey. But it's readable, so give it a try if you are okay with mtl.

Depression and anxiety.

Yep, it's so well written that you can feel those. So, trigger warning.

This is the best writing style for me. I can feel MCs emotions. But at the same time, it's not overdone. It's so neat and precise.

... more>> The characters are few but well-written. They are distinct and 3D.

The story was more enjoyable than its smut. Ha, it never happened before.

Every line felt important.

And yes, MC is charming. Really really charming. I would fall for him. But, his insecurities (those bastard exes ruined him) are the cause of his constant anxiety. He fails to see his own good points.

ML is perfect for him. But, he needs to communicate with MC. It could help. <<less

TWs: The MC is suicidal and suffers from PTSD. There's past tragedy and the MC also goes through a tragic experience throughout the story. Some mentions and depictions of partner violence and abuse (not between the CP though, the ML is very caring) and in relation to the mpreg plot there's:

A miscarriage that's portrayed as quite tragic for the MC. He does get a baby in the extras though and forms a happy family with the ML.

What's good about the story

Nice story if you can handle the dark themes (this isn't a fluffy novel) - some parts were quite moving and it was a binge-worthy read, but some parts were treated in a shallow way, which is why I think it's more a 4 star than 5 star story.

MC has PTSD due to his past family tragedy. He's a very oblivious person and extremely unreliable narrator due to having very little insights into his own personality, appearance and very low self-esteem. He lost his parents and brother as a teenager, and his remaining family (one uncle) is a scum who cheated him out of his inheritance and took advantage of him. The MC has had a string of abusive relationships - it's never entirely explained why every single one of his exes were a scum person who treated him badly, but my guess is that Seo-yu was desperate to fill the emotional void left from losing his family and being alone, and his low self-esteem stemming from having to fend for himself too early left him vulnerable to the type of people who would abuse him. I imagine that abusive people will pursue love interests with low self-esteem and low sense of self-worth because they're easier to manipulate.

In this way the novel gives an interesting perspective since it shows how easy it is for someone without a strong social network or close, caring relations to be abused because they can't actually fight back. Reminded me a bit of the novel 'Sissy', but this novel is not as deep in that aspect.

The ex we do get to see is absolute scum - it's gratifying to see the bad guys get what they deserve and the MC getting into a loving relationship with someone who loves him unconditionally and protects him behind his back.

It's also a touching story about a person who overcomes his past trauma and finds new meaning in life. It's about how to move on after devastating loss and overcoming survivor's guilt:

Spoiler

the MC's brother rescued him at the cost of his own life.

[collapse]

The descriptions of the MC's loss was quite moving and sad.

Smut is there too - the CP are quite h**ny, especially the MC.

The flaws of the story:

The ML's condition isn't developed properly - it's mostly mentioned in the extras that he's supposed to be kind of a sociopath who has problems with feelings emotions and relating to others. It's shown a bit in the beginning when the MC meets him the first couple of times and he doesn't show his attraction to the MC, but acts like the typical cold CEO with 'facial paralysis' which is a common trope. But quickly he turns into a warm and loving character with great empathy and understanding for the MC, so I felt he wasn't well-developed. Also his attraction to the MC comes out of the blue

and he changes abruptly from not expressing his feelings/interest at all (so the MC thinks the ML is just using him for sex) to suddenly acting completely like a boyfriend, to the extent where it's unrealistic that even someone with very low self-esteem could misunderstand their relationship.

Problem is also the world-building. It's ABO where there's a hierarchy where there are different types of alphas and omegas (betas are just regular people here) - the MC is an omega who's weaker in some sense (called 'regressive' in the translation) whereas the ML is a top alpha (I guess it relates to pheromone level, strength of genes and fertility?). And apparently the MC is low in the biological hierarchy because of his weaker pheromone level and constitution, so normally a top alpha wouldn't fall for him. Except the only ones who tell the MC that he can't be with the ML because of their biological 'mismatch' are people who have an interest in keeping them apart. Either due to jealousy (the MC's friend) or people who are interested in the MC and want to substitute the ML. No one else cares, so it's a little weird that the MC is incapable of realizing that the guy who behaves like a loyal, loving boyfriend in every way possible is just his s*x friend. The MC is na

ve and think too little of himself (partly because of all his shitty exes who put him down all the time and abused him).

About the big misunderstanding - the MC really lacked braincells here to the point where it was very unrealistic:

Spoiler

the MC overhears half a conversation and despite having absolutely zero proof that the ML would marry someone else or could imp**gnate someone else, he decides this is the case, instead of the logical conclusion that the ML wants to marry him.

Seriously, how dumb can you be? Even with low self-esteem, logically there's no way the ML could have a fianc

e that he had slept with. Maybe if their relationship was more ambiguous or the ML didn't show his affection so much, but let's look at the facts. Since they slept together the first time, the ML has:

  • continued to seek out the MC and cared for him instead of just using him for s*x - like staying over at the MC's place, having his bodyguards keep sending him food
  • stalking him (the only part I wasn't fond of in the courtship - if you like someone, just ask him out, maybe he wouldn't go on a date with someone else if you told him you want to date him, and stalking him is creepy) and preventing him from dating another person and taking him home when he's drunk (still stalking and only okay because the friend is tr*sh and the MC's self-preservation level is close to zero).
  • taking him to work and picking him up every day, changing his schedule/staying up late to talk to him for a whole week
  • taking him on dinner dates, romantic kisses, giving him flowers
  • checking up on him, telling that he can't stand being away from him
  • taking him to his home and asking about his opinion for a new house and how he dislikes living alone (the MC totally did not understand this very obvious hint though)
  • comforting him emotionally
  • finally taking him to meet his parents and telling him how much his parents want to give him a good impression of them and think it's important to meet him

Also the ML spends all his waking hours either at work or meeting with or talking to the MC. There is simply no time left over to woo someone else. So the MC here is being too dumb here.

[collapse]

I've read plenty of novels with dense characters who are clueless about their love interest's feelings, but that's usually because of realistic misunderstandings or the love interest being bad at communicating his feelings. But here, the ML does everything right - he just doesn't

Spoiler

outright propose because of the MC's fragile mental state, which he is very aware of and tries to accommodate by talking it slowly

[collapse]

I feel that the author just pulled the 'ML who's emotionally stunted and learns to love from the MC' trope because otherwise the ML who just seem like pure wish-fulfillment. He's simply to empathetic for someone who has never been in a relationship before and doesn't even care about his own family. Also it's weird that it never gets properly explained what the ML and his father works with.

The extras with the brother's perspective are frankly boring and unnecessary. The ML's younger brother overall is a weird character - who would ever ask the kind of questions he asks the MC when they barely know each other? It's so weird. I get that the brother has a crush on the MC, but that also doesn't serve any point in the story and should have been left out.

Overall a good story, but it's a bit superficial in some parts. Would still recommend for people who like ABO with wholesome romance and healing from trauma (plus smut). <<less

A solid story with a realistic pov on how depression feels like sometimes.

Also very interesting protagonists. Our MC is not a typical whiny or super adorable omega. Our ML may be a typical cold CEO but he gets more depth than usual MLs.

This would be a solid 5 star if the translation was good. It is... Readable but a lot of the nuances of the story are just lost.

I loved this story. Premium bitter-sweet fluffy dogfood! Despite the Omegaverse (ABO) & the Dominant-Recessive dynamics its still a very good emotional slice of life novel.

The supposedly depressive tone was supressed by the light & slightly comedic narration (also by Seo Yu's pure cuteness) but it cant completely overturn the sadness & loneliness that sometimes show in the writing, Seo Yu's personality is a lot more than I can describe (just read the others) but in my opinion he's pretty normal considering what he'd been thru after the event, it... more>> doesnt help that his uncle is a ** that pimps him and he always encounters scum everywhere (including his exes), so he has a warped view of himself and the world so much that it adds more to his already unstable mental state (He's the nice & looks cheerful but seriously depressed kind + PTSD + suicidal) up until he met Sung Hoon where his bitter-sweet misunderstood relationship began.
Spoiler

That led up to a slight misfortune. The looming dark tone near the end almost made it seem like it'll be a BE. But what exceeded my expectations is that Sung Hoon knowing his lack of emotions tried counseling just to accomodate Seo Yu's emotions after what happened, its my first time encountering the ML making this kind of effort, its noteworthy.

[collapse]

After all that even if I still have suspicions on Seo Yu's farewell, Im still so glad that they reached a happy ending, they deserved this happiness. Altho I have mixed feelings while reading Sung hyun's pov cause I wasnt really quite sure how he feels towards Seo Yu but Im still glad for that extra because his thoughts gave highlights* (lack for a better word atm) on MC's life & happiness before & after that fateful day, and really brings closure to the story.

Definitely a favorite! Added to my all time fave emotional rereads <<less

Although the translation is a bit off, it's understadable and SO SO GOOD. it was quite angsty and honestly I cried a lot reading this.

i particularly got my heartbroken when seo-yu realized that he was pregnant and the baby has a low chance of surviving.

even though this is my first bl korean novel and has no other novel to compare to other than tgcf, it left me in tears and warm heart. Thank you so much for translating! And guys if you want to start reading this and is still hesitating don't worry it's worth to read. The emotions in this story is so relatable as it talked about depression and loneliness. And no there's no annoying misunderstandings here. The characters are all so lovely except ofc to his uncle and ig to seo-yu's friend but yea I realized that maybe he's like that because he doesn't know how to handle friendships and naturally has a rude mouth.

I cried a lot at the beginning in almost every chapter because of the way the protagonist had of himself at the time, until the end I wish he had talked what he thought about himself with ML, but it didn't happen (but still he noticeably changed a lot about what he thinks of himself, which is good), but other than that, overall I liked it a lot.

Deserves the 5 rating. Beautiful writing and translation work hats off. The story will make you cry buckets but also laugh you pants off from the second had embarrassment caused by the MC. Every character is painted so vividly and none of them feel irrelevant. The bad guys make you want to go through the screen and punch them while supporting characters are given equal weight. Especially the chapters that gives ML’s brothers’ POV. Very good read after a long time. I had a good cry and laughed into hiccups... more>> reading this. <<less

This story is triggering and has angst.

TW // su*cide, miscarriage, parasu*cide, depression, anxiety

I love this story!!! I want more!!! It's illegal to only have 62 chapters! I feel like crying!! I want to know more the love of MC and ML 😭😭

... more>> MC was pitiful and I'm happy both the MC and ML found each other. It's nice to know the POV of ML's brother. I just wished there were more chapters. I also wished there were more of ML's POv

Also, the background of ML was not discussed. How he got those scars, tattoo, and why he got a gangster like bodyguard (aside from being rich).

I wished it was shown that MC completed successfully the therapy because he obviously need it. I'm happy that the ML attended a counseling. That's so sweet of him. <<less

I have read only about half but right now I feel like I was baited by the good rating and reviews. It's not to say the book is bad and it has given me plenty feels but... Well, my expectations were probably too high. I think if I started reading it without any, I'd have probably found the story better. I might adjust this review if I read more later.

Spoiler

It started off good and had potential, though the translation made it awkward in places. I was expecting dark but healing story that will make me feel emotional. Instead we get a typical cold face paralysis dominant alpha with typical overwhelming skills and stamina in bed. Their relationship kinda came out of nowhere (as usual the cold ML falls in love very quickly without it making any sense), but I could still take all of this but... While the MC seemed kind of smart in the beginning, just depressed and crippled with low self-esteem, as the story goes he seems more and more dumb. Some things might have gotten lost in translation but as is, I'm not sure how he even managed to stay alive til the starting point of the story instead of ending up beaten up to death by one of his shitty exes/rich scum his uncle sent him to bed with.

There is not much of communication between MC and ML because MC is very insecure in their relationship (thinks they are just flirting and sleeping together) due to his past experiences (he seems to have a lot of shitty exes that he doesn't cut off and his one long-time friend is of the toxic kind) meanwhile ML as a typical rarely-talks-cold-to-everyone-but-MC has long assumed they are in a relationship but never felt the need to express this with words. As the story evolves, ML treats MC like a pet and even talks about it but MC is too dumb to understand. He takes care of MC's troubles by disappearing people behind his back and keeps him in the dark. This may get better as the story goes but I just really don't like stories where MC is treated/raised like a cute pet that can't think for himself and needs to be taken care of. And COMMUNICATION IS IMPORTANT.

One character I really liked was the omega cafe owner. He seemed really sweet, crushing on our MC for years and not being discouraged even after finding out they are both O. And he seemed genuinely happy for MC to be happy to be with ML too. I really hope author doesn't villainize him later in the story because of his one-sided love as he was truly a sweet and kind person in MC's life who never tried to force his affections on thim while he was too dense to see it. If he didn't wait in inaction for years, in alternate reality this could have been an OxO healing story. But well, that's not this book.

It was very well written. MC's flow of thoughts was so accurate that I cried in each and every chapters (as a person with depression for a long time). It was so heartbreaking that MC had survivor guilt, though may seems that MC was trying to be optimistic but in the way that he was putting himself down+ low self esteem, it was a wonder how he was able to cope with his childhood trauma and depression. (With shitty so-called 'friend') Makes me feel glad that MC himself is a... more>> strong and tough baby which we DEFINITELY NEED TO PROTECT IN ADDITION TO HIS AWESOME HUSBANDO. One thing I have to appreciate is author -nim did not make the story even darker. This story has a lot of angst but at the same time it gave hope, in which MC finally meet a decent human in his life, giving him a reason to continue to live on and understood his brother's sacrifice.
Spoiler

The only thing in this story which I find not necessary is his miscarriage of his first baby. (I need more fluff and babies).

[collapse]
I would definitely recommend to read the manwha first before going for this novel, as it will not be traumatizing in the manhwa in comparison to the novel <<less
