He was treated harshly by his environment, and no one was ever nice to him. But as long as there was such a person, a corner of the curtain would be opened for the person in the cage. Then, a person like him would also find the light. This was an animal’s instinct, a desire to survive.

Su Beimo was a beam of light, opening the door of the ‘prison’.

It was him who saved Liao Nanqing, who had been living with an inferiority complex.

This is the first review I have ever written. I came across this novel on accident, but felt really compelled to put my thoughts into words after finishing this novel.

To anyone who is wondering whether or not to read this novel: if you love fluff, there is no end to it here. If you seek angst, you’ve also found it here.

Yes, there is some dark and sadly very realistic subject matter that you will read, and will make you cry for Ling Nanqing. However, as someone who has read many... more>> angst filled novels, there are no unnecessary dragged out misunderstandings, dog blooded plot lines, etc. There is no focus at all on any kind of “revenge” plot line; the focus is more on Ling Nanqing’s personal journey to healing, in much part with the help of Su Beimo. They naturally connect with one another and become closer over time, and are open and honest in their feelings for one another. We alternate often between their perspectives, so much so that I would say they both are the MC of this story, which is beautiful in another way.

Aside from the amazing main couple, the rest of the characters in this novel are also fantastically written. Ling Nanqing does not magically heal from his mental scars with the power of love — although Su Beimo helps him take the first, and very important step, it is the friends Ling Nanqing makes, and others around him too who help him see light in a world that was originally so cruel to him. His friends and Su Beimo’s family members, among others, also have personalities, motivations and reasons for the way they act, and aren’t complete saints either. Our antagonists are also not quite black and white. Various people in the novel made terrible mistakes, but they are not truly “evil” to the core. A combination of circumstance, social expectations, and desperation drive much of their actions. Even the worst of the worst is human (though one person did quite unforgivable things, but he is also the character we know the least about).

Another note on these antagonists in the story: as I mentioned earlier, there is no focus on revenge or face slapping. Indeed, one really important theme in this that hatred, revenge, and desperation will always lead to something worse, no matter how justified you think that revenge may be. Life is so short, why spend it on your hate? Both Ling Nangqing and Su Beimo learn to move on and not take revenge into their own hands. So little of the novel focuses on resentment at all, and it is through the juxtaposition of Ling Nanqing and Su Beimo with the characters that do focus on resentment that we see healing is more important than hurting those who hurt you. Example:

Spoiler

There is that moment when Su Beimo is beating up Ling Nanqing’s stepfather where Su Beimo’s mother tells him to stop with the violence and instead go check on the injured Ling Nanqing instead. This, as well as later on when Su Beimo decides to leave Ling Nanqing’s stepfather in the hands of the law instead of confront him himself, really drives in the focus on self healing instead of revenge. Su Beimo’s mother also tells him not to make the mistake that Ling Nanqing’s father made, losing himself to hatred and making things worse for himself and the person he wanted to protect.

[collapse]

There is so much I can say about this novel and how well the author tied everything up together, but this is long enough. It isn’t the most mind provoking, deep, philosophical, or exciting novel. If anything, it is quite mundane, and normal, but it does so well in its normalcy that it stands out among other novels that I have read. We never get a sense that everything is happy, everyone is good, all things are resolved, all side characters get their endings, because Ling Nanqing and Su Beimo’s life and love are still ongoing, as is everyone else’s. The novel ends with Ling Nanqing finally on the road to proper recovery, and the light of a bright future paving their way.

Hopefully this review motivates you to give this novel a try. It’s also not very long, so might make a nice read in between your longer and more complex readings.

So far, it's extremely good and the translation is excellent. This novel deserves more people reading it and if you're into heartwarming stories, this one will hit you right in your heart. Don't let the low ratings deter you from jumping into this pit.

Spoiler

Liao Nanqing's past is pretty tragic and I'm moved by the changes that I'm reading, especially with the Su family being very considerate and understanding. I'm glad that the author touched upon subjects that most don't.

1000/10, WHY SO GOOD?!!

I really don't understand those people who gave less than 4 stars? What's wrong with you all? It's a wonderful story that touched some sensitive topics, so what? Don't read if you don't like sensitive topics, why reduce the ratings? I myself don't like to read abuse, but when there is love it's okay to read along with it. What's so beautiful is their love here, not the abuse. So focus on right things.

Let's talk about the story. Heart warming romance. Usually I don't believe people saying... more>> they can't live without eachother to their loved ones. But ML and MC' love made me rethink again, cause they really can't live without eachother.

Rather than words, you can feel how much they love each other through their actions and behaviour.

And the review by LeniSnow, what makes you think that MC is emotionally dependent on ML ?. Yes he is dependent, but not how bad you described, MC got improved because he loved himself as well as ML, I don't know why can't you see that. You see in the last chapters that MC accepted his past and no longer blamed himself that he is wrong. ML walks by his side and helped him to come out of shadows. To be frank, they are both dependent on each other. TOTALLY WORTH THE READ!!! <<less

If you want to know what true love is just read this novel.😍

A masterpiece, the most heart warming novel that I have ever read. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️ The characters are not perfect it's not fairy tail, it's real and thats what I like the most it's real life with real problems.

I must say if the ML was real I would marry him right away (he is not perfect has many flaws) he is so gentle, you can see his love for MC is 100 times stronger than his desires, he only has love... more>> for the MC, pureeeee love😍.

For all people who say the MC deepends to much on the ML, please just think for yourself, the MC had such traumatic expiriences, do you thnik he can overcame all that in a short time and be indapendant right away, off course not it needs time and he will learn through the years to be more self confident.

MC and ML are a match made in heaven, read it. ❤️❤️ <<less

Finishing the story, now that I think of it, being emotionally dependent on another person isn't healthy. It would have been more satisfying if MC was shown to have grown completely different from his past instead of showing him to have been happy because he found love, its unfair on both MC and ml. Being emotionally depended on is too much of a pressure and tiring, and emotionally depending is'nt mentally healthy, cant imagine how paranoid a person could get. Even an anchor would rust, mountains could crumble. It seems... more>> too unrealiable, it's a shallow connection too vulnerable for a precious life to depend on, once shattered it is worrisome what will happened to him. It would have been nice to see him grow into a stronger and more confident individual, it might be too much to ask because of what happened to him but the ability to be able to move forward with his own might would be better for himself. I wouldnt want them to breakup even in 7 or even 10 years but just like ml's parents who had to fight for love, a relationship no matter how passionate it once was could have an expiration and what would happen to MC or even to ML after that. I was hoping that the author had given MC a better ending. <<less

I'm so mad to ppl who treating homosexuality as a fckin disease. Why they can't shut their fcking mouth off and spend their time to be a good human and stop gossiping abt someone's life. My poor nianqing, you're brave im so proud of you. Thank you to beimo for treating him the way he deserved to be treated T^T

Elders need to be educate more just like teens, sometimes their reason doesn't even make sense -, -

If ppl are like mc's mother, stepfather, and ml's father... ppl in... more>> the future will suffer more and will stop them from being free to discrimination. I don't like seeing ppl, especially those who are close to me and part of the lgbtq+, having difficulty becsuse of those close minded ppl. <<less

I want to get mad at the author for using abuse as a plot tool, but at the same time I appreciate her touching on this topic. More importantly, the damage wasn't glossed over and we also don't have unrealistic face-slapping that sometimes end up cheapening the healing process. What we have instead are abusers & abused who react realistically to the situation.

Still, I can't claim that it's worth 5 stars but I'm giving it 5 to pull up ratings because it doesn't deserve the current low rating either.

I feel like this novel is a hidden gem. It is definitely difficult to read in some parts so mind the trigger warnings the translator adds, but the author touches on so many issues in society, not just homosexuality.

Spoiler

One of the big societal issues she touches on, besides homosexuality, is how people treat victims of s*xual assault. The MC was never r*ped, but rumors circulated that he had been as a child. Despite him being only ten, people around him called him dirty, blamed him, treated him badly, despite being a victim. He never got any real warmth or support after being attacked, and despite getting away before anything happened, everyone refused to believe him. This is something that really happens in real life, especially in conservative cultures like in China, and the author really highlights how horrific and damaging it is to treat someone like that who did nothing wrong.

[collapse]

Overall, this really is the epitome of a hurt/comfort novel and the fluff is so blissfully sweet to make up for the terrible things the MC had to go through. It really is worth the read.

Also, the ML's father can go f*ck himself and never deserves to be forgiven. <<less

Rating: 4/5- Good short story with angst and romance. The abuse and bullying was definitely hard to read but it’s a valid topic to address.

I liked that professional help was used in this story. Although a lot of the pivotal abuse was glazed over and written in a confusing matter, I did think that many of the plot points around s*xual abuse, child abuse, violence and family dynamics were well written overall.

The book leaves a rather bland aftertaste in your mouth by the end though. In a way as if... more>> the author ended things rather abruptly.

Still enjoyed reading this. It is a difficult read for sensitive readers though so keep that in mind before trying this. <<less

Too precious... really too precious!

I was hesitant to read this at first because I thought I wouldn’t like this but dang this is just so good.

I’m so happy that the MC met ML and that now, they have each other.

Trigger warning though for abuse (although the abuse wasn’t between MC and ML) ... more>>
Spoiler

there’s a couple of chapters where the MC was abused by his step father. It was so so so heartbreaking, I was teary eyed reading all those. Very heart breaking and also kinda triggering for someone who dealt with abuse in their life, it made me remember bad memories because the scenes in the novel are kinda vivid

The first taste is a bit abrupt but the subsequent tastes are fantastic.

Some minor downs with our shou but, the end goal is golden. HE!

this isn't a review but a warning for those like me who would have really appreciated someone mentioning this very important detail: MC is a high schooler & ML is a college student. Not only is that age & maturity gap weird and predatory, but this is also a harmful dynamic for the MC cuz ML is like his savior of sorts to him and MC is lowkey dependent on him. Ml, as the adult, should be responsible and not have indulged the MC, knowing how he is because an... more>> adult man who is in a completely different place (senior in college w/ incoming internship) liking him and letting him depend on him is not what MC needs. It is also just plain creepy.

i can't remember which chapter I dropped this at since I just made this review after remembering to do so but you find out about mc's and ml's age in the first two chapters. It would have been a great read if not for the weird dynamic, but I couldn't just ignore it because it made me uncomfortable. Once you're an adult, you can tell how different you are from people of other ages in terms of cognitive development. Don't even mention how different a 21yr old is from an 18 yr old, just a high schooler from a senior in college is already different and very far in maturity. <<less

Heart breaking and heart warming at the same time.

The worst character is Su Jin. An 'intellectual' in the science field but with old fashioned, patriarchal ideals not to mention stubborn to boot.

It really unnerved me when he discovered that his actions nearly caused Liao Nanqing's dead (and left him with serious psychological issues), but he was relieved and more worried his son wont hate him for life. 😡 Dude someone nearly lost their life, pretend to care about them not your feelings.

Soo as you can see I haven't read the whole novel BUT I'm already very satisfied. It's really heart warming and sweet story. Beware of the tags b*llying, ab*use and tragic past. It all made me cry.

I would have completed reading it but I'm in the mood for reading something s*upid and melodramatic so....

I just completed this it's 1 am let's go

Firstly, it's translated well. So thank you for that

Second, the main characters are really good. Written as well as as their own. They have a past present future and goals. I like the individuality of them even tho it has a big plot of dependency

... more>> Thirdly, I like how any of them are super rich because let's be honest it solves a lot of problems so it was good to see those.

Forth, they really really like each a lot a straight forward like. A love very transparent. Very refreshing!

The plot is not unheard of but not all cliche. It changes a lot throughout

CONS.

1. I hated HATED the pacing. The cute parts are like 2 chapters but the torture parts are like 8 chapters long. Sometimes I felt like smtg bad is going to happen but didn't but then the problems didn't stop... I can't

2. The author doesn't build up the romance well. That doesn't mean their relationship is bad or not good to read but the lack of tension or pining (there is technically there but it's not written yk?) When their was potential really took away points for me.

3. I didn't like how disgusting bad like the situation in the plot gets for no reason at all. I understand the need to write sad/treacherous scenes but streching it sooo long.. maybe it's just me tho but I didn't see the point of it or how it fits. For eg. Almost every bad guy acts like a psychopath (not exaggerating) ? And there's no sane person in the vicinity at this given point.. this happens so many times. So I can just say it's used as a plot device (not a great idea if you're thinking of writing fyi)

4. idk why it irks me? MC is just turned 18 (why is he 18 in high school? No one knows) and the ML is 3rd year uni i.e 21/22 ? It shouldn't bother me that much. But it does exactly because it's not mentioned not by author not by any main character. I've read worst age gaps btw. Maybe because I don't see that s*xual tension between them?. AGAIN THAT DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE NOT ADORABLE TOGETHER OK there's a reason it's tagged shonen-ai.

So for last words. It's pretty good if you find the summary intresting go for it. But for me after reading novels like 4'o clock flower and mint stained shirt are still better. <<less

To tell the truth.. I cried. Cried a lot. This story really gave me strong emotions.

From the beginning to end the story flow was something I really admire. Not too hurried. Just the right phase. I really liked that. Also the characters. The amount of difficulties they went through, the support they gained from their family (only some family members) and friends.. One thing I really respect is how they hold on to each other in every situation. A simple encounter turned in to a lifetime love story. Not a... more>> simple love story. But a strong and unbreakable love. Their bond is really heartwarming and admirable. They sacrificed many things in order to hold each other hands. And that.. I love it very much.

Sometimes you just need that one person to hold one to you and bad times will pass soon. Many memories will be there to accompany for a lifetime.

Story is very well written and translations were very nice. A good reading experience.

Highly recommend! <<less
