In an alternate Earth, MC Lin Fan inherits an Encyclopedic System that enables him to instantly learn new skills. No reason or goal given other than to be "recognized" for his skill. So MC decides that with his newfound abilities, he will make a name for himself. That's about it. COMMENTS
(1) Zero originality. Boring, ultra-short arcs with tons of filler
The encyclopedic system isn't new, especially since this novel was written 3 years after IRAS.
That might've been ok if the story was well put together, but.... It relies on a pathetic, episodic, and-then-this-happened story structure. Instead of building up a situation, MC just randomly gains skills, and then immediately situation A/B/C/D/E appears where he can apply it. The "arc" is resolved in 5-10 chapters. Author doesn't even bother explaining how it's resolved. IT JUST IS. The worst part is that half of each arc is filler with everyone reacting to how amazing MC is. Utterly ridiculous.
Here are typical examples.
- MC gains backscrubbing skill. Then suddenly on the commercial street he works at, there's apparently a bathhouse that was always there. Never mentioned before.
- MC gains street racing skill. Suddenly we're told there's a street race in a month. Author writes that MC somehow spun the car 360 deg in a bend. Then in the next paragraph he is at the end point and lapped everyone else (12 mins vs 24 min record). Huh??
- A lot of the powers he gains are nonsensical. It was suggested that his skills could be combined to unimaginable effect. Then abandoned. - At times MC gains skills so quickly that author didn't have time/forgot to have MC use his prior skill. Author then "remembers" the forgotten skill, and shoves a random scenario for MC to use it. - Everything done by the MC, and I mean EVERYTHING, is explained as "MC-infuses-his-magical-encyclopedia-powers-into-A/B/C/D/E and therefore it's more amazing than normal". WTF??? - MC skill progression is ridiculous, from bad-ass fighter to xianxia level skills. Whole novel changed from real-world to "Rebirth of the Urban Immortal".
- MC's primary fortune-telling skill is used poorly. He assesses that someone is a "bad guy" (mostly black/white, no grey areas), judges them by his own standards and "pronounces" his sentencing mostly via street-justice / crowd manipulation.
-- MC typically tells someone they have bad fortune.
If they react with humility, MC helps them.
If they react with even the slightest bit of negativity (which majority of normal people would), they are regarded as dumbasses who couldn't IMMEDIATELY understand how amazing MC is (despite being completely strangers with him and meeting him for the first time). Therefore they deserve their fate for not listening to the MC.
-- Many "baddies" are genuinely repentant after crossing the MC. Even if they haven't done anything truly evil (e.g. foster daughter who was estranged from her poor villager father), MC treats them crappily even after situation is resolved.
There is no concept of appropriate punishment for a crime. If someone crosses the MC, he will physically beat them down and ruin their lives. Period.
Completely useless damsels-in-distress all the time, every single time. From actresses, to casino owners. Their interaction with MC is literally 2-3 paragraphs in a chapter, MC saves them, they fall in love with the MC, then proceed to disappear.
Even by Chapter 700, MC has zero progress with the women around him, constantly claiming that he has no time, despite the fact that he just lazes around and does nothing most of the time. If it's supposed to be a running joke, it isn't funny. (4) Nationalism, h*mophobia
The nationalist bit was kinda messed up.
It's either
(1) "China is the underdog! Korea/Japan/America is disrespecting us! They need to be excessively excessively EXCESSIVELY face-smacked, just because!" OR
(2) "China will f*ck with you, just because it can".
All the usual tropes that were dug-up and recycled from old real life events, including some inappropriate racial/gender slurs.
- Some Korean stars were behaving inappropriately/excessively while in China. Which happens for basically any countries' stars. In this novel, ALL Korean stars are labeled as washed-up has-beens that ran away to China to make money from the innocent Chinese.
- MC hacks into Japan's financial/govt systems for ABSOLUTELY no reason, other than to prove that he can. The Japanese are written as ret*rds who have no defense, and go around shouting "Banzai" (for no reason) when they thwarted the MC by shutting down their whole network.
- The whole world "looks down" on Chinese Art. Then MC recreates all the historical artwork and they are considered national treasures. And they are amazing, just because author says they are amazing without describing them in detail.
Huh? It's HISTORICAL artwork, it needs age and authenticity to go along with it. WTF would a MODERN artist drawing Ming dynasty pieces suddenly make them invaluable?
