Dropped it at 120 chaps

  • Funny novel similar to The Strongest System
  • In around chapter 100 the MC turned into a arrogant-like young master, who always bring trouble to himself by being a meddlesome c*nt.

Much like "I'm Really a Superstar" this is just another generic face slapping power fantasy with an unpleasant/low class main character - only less funny/interesting.

Additionally just a bit of fair warning: You won't be able to enjoy this unless you can enjoy "traditional" Chinese bullsh*t as the entire second arc is based on face slapping anyone who doesn't believe in Chinese fortune telling.

Author told us in notes that it's not a cultivation novel but in late chapters MC become way stronger than ordinary people. Romance close to 0 since MC care only about getting powers, funny office girls from first arc (when he sell pancakes) disappears and looks like author forgot about them.

I'd say it one of the best modern type novels.

As suggested by most other reviewers, it's a carbon-copy of "I'm Really a Superstar" (2014), but lesser in everyway. Takes face-slapping to the Nth degree, which is really annoying.

SUMMARY
In an alternate Earth, MC Lin Fan inherits an Encyclopedic System that enables him to instantly learn new skills. No reason or goal given other than to be "recognized" for his skill. So MC decides that with his newfound abilities, he will make a name for himself. That's about it.

COMMENTS
(1) Zero originality. Boring, ultra-short arcs with tons of filler
The encyclopedic system isn't new, especially since this novel was written 3 years after IRAS.
That might've been ok if... more>> the story was well put together, but....

It relies on a pathetic, episodic, and-then-this-happened story structure. Instead of building up a situation, MC just randomly gains skills, and then immediately situation A/B/C/D/E appears where he can apply it. The "arc" is resolved in 5-10 chapters. Author doesn't even bother explaining how it's resolved. IT JUST IS. The worst part is that half of each arc is filler with everyone reacting to how amazing MC is. Utterly ridiculous.
Here are typical examples.
Spoiler

- MC gains backscrubbing skill. Then suddenly on the commercial street he works at, there's apparently a bathhouse that was always there. Never mentioned before.
- MC gains street racing skill. Suddenly we're told there's a street race in a month. Author writes that MC somehow spun the car 360 deg in a bend. Then in the next paragraph he is at the end point and lapped everyone else (12 mins vs 24 min record). Huh??

[collapse]

(2) Crappy world building and problematic values
- A lot of the powers he gains are nonsensical. It was suggested that his skills could be combined to unimaginable effect. Then abandoned.

- At times MC gains skills so quickly that author didn't have time/forgot to have MC use his prior skill. Author then "remembers" the forgotten skill, and shoves a random scenario for MC to use it.

- Everything done by the MC, and I mean EVERYTHING, is explained as "MC-infuses-his-magical-encyclopedia-powers-into-A/B/C/D/E and therefore it's more amazing than normal". WTF???

- MC skill progression is ridiculous, from bad-ass fighter to xianxia level skills. Whole novel changed from real-world to "Rebirth of the Urban Immortal".

- MC's primary fortune-telling skill is used poorly. He assesses that someone is a "bad guy" (mostly black/white, no grey areas), judges them by his own standards and "pronounces" his sentencing mostly via street-justice / crowd manipulation.
Spoiler

-- MC typically tells someone they have bad fortune.
If they react with humility, MC helps them.
If they react with even the slightest bit of negativity (which majority of normal people would), they are regarded as dumbasses who couldn't IMMEDIATELY understand how amazing MC is (despite being completely strangers with him and meeting him for the first time). Therefore they deserve their fate for not listening to the MC.
-- Many "baddies" are genuinely repentant after crossing the MC. Even if they haven't done anything truly evil (e.g. foster daughter who was estranged from her poor villager father), MC treats them crappily even after situation is resolved.
There is no concept of appropriate punishment for a crime. If someone crosses the MC, he will physically beat them down and ruin their lives. Period.

[collapse]

(3) Boring romance and side characters
Completely useless damsels-in-distress all the time, every single time. From actresses, to casino owners. Their interaction with MC is literally 2-3 paragraphs in a chapter, MC saves them, they fall in love with the MC, then proceed to disappear.
Even by Chapter 700, MC has zero progress with the women around him, constantly claiming that he has no time, despite the fact that he just lazes around and does nothing most of the time. If it's supposed to be a running joke, it isn't funny.

(4) Nationalism, h*mophobia
The nationalist bit was kinda messed up.
It's either
(1) "China is the underdog! Korea/Japan/America is disrespecting us! They need to be excessively excessively EXCESSIVELY face-smacked, just because!" OR
(2) "China will f*ck with you, just because it can".
All the usual tropes that were dug-up and recycled from old real life events, including some inappropriate racial/gender slurs.

Spoiler

- Some Korean stars were behaving inappropriately/excessively while in China. Which happens for basically any countries' stars. In this novel, ALL Korean stars are labeled as washed-up has-beens that ran away to China to make money from the innocent Chinese.
- MC hacks into Japan's financial/govt systems for ABSOLUTELY no reason, other than to prove that he can. The Japanese are written as ret*rds who have no defense, and go around shouting "Banzai" (for no reason) when they thwarted the MC by shutting down their whole network.
- The whole world "looks down" on Chinese Art. Then MC recreates all the historical artwork and they are considered national treasures. And they are amazing, just because author says they are amazing without describing them in detail.
Huh? It's HISTORICAL artwork, it needs age and authenticity to go along with it. WTF would a MODERN artist drawing Ming dynasty pieces suddenly make them invaluable?

[collapse]

MC literally "cured" a lesbian. Yup, he made her straight with his magical Chinese Medicinal skills. So now she is a hottie with feelings for him. Ugh. <<less

A dumb power fantasy and face slapping

You need to turn off your brain and logic to read this thing, after those thing are off then the story is quite fun

But the story suddenly got axed at 1239 with 1 chapter suddenly ending the novel because the author is bored of it and his wife is going to give birth soon or something, the author himself knew this novel is a dumb piece of garbage that can be recycled endleslly (opening more encyclopedia knoweldge) but the author dont want to and... more>> just end it by MC rejecting the encyclopedias immortallity and marrying all harem member, even the trans turn real women that hate MC is included because fck logic by author <<less

This is a very fun story to read. It's relaxing and you can read it in your free time and maybe you'll be happy for the day. The story uses the common cliches to turn this story into a very hilarious one. If you want a story with an MC OP in every definition (really, you can be op in any occupation thanks to your gift package.), And that you value friendships, you should definitely read this.

PS: Lin Fan is really going to have a valiant life.

There are not many... more>> chapters, so later I'll update.

Translator please release the chapters faster! I want more! MORE! <<less

All I can really say so far, is that it seems like a generic power fantasy. Some no name loser randomly finds a cheat power that lets them master things instantly. Now we get the beautiful women swarming him, faces getting smacked, and fame. Will update if the novel betrays my expectations in the future, I doubt it though.

Very bad.

The novels ridiculousness is out of this world. For example, there was a world championship athletes competition and they were talking about how the Jamaicans are amazing at it and when a Jamaican comes on to compete they describe him as 'He looks even blacker now' WHAT THE F!? What has that got to do with anything that was going on? Absolutely nothing.

MC gains many skills ranging from cooking all the way to gambling almost as if it wants to be something like I'm Really a Superstar but more... more>> broader. Unfortunately with how broad these skills are a lot of them tend to only be used during the arc the MC acquires those skills and are never used again, I can expect the author to forget a lot of the skills as they've already forgotten a lot of the plot. MC opens up a fortune telling shop after quitting making scallion pancakes as he saw no future in it but then later with no explanation returns to making scallion pancakes while rarely doing any fortune telling. He literally has the best fortune teller in his shop as a 'disciple' but all that person does is give an advice every 10-20 chapters and then disappears again.

Romance is the worst, do not expect anything out of this novel as you would rather it didn't even try to have any romance in place. MC is apparently completely oblivious to the advances of two female characters who show up very rarely and their like towards the MC pops out of nowhere with no rhyme or reason. It leaves a bad taste and it would be better to skip any of the interactions between the MC and the girls as it has nothing to do with anything and are more like fillers like the majority of the events that occur in the 'novel'.

Is this novel interesting? Nope, I feel like the author who wrote this has never written a novel before nor has ever read one. At the beginning, I believed the MC was trying to get rich and famous but no that's a lie, he would rather stay low-profile. Makes sense when he shows up on TV, offends many rich and powerful people. Another thing about the offending part, they have like 3-4 chapters of the MC offending a group only to have them disappear as the author obvious keeps forgetting about events they add.

Example of MC staying low profile

Spoiler

MC finds a rich business man who does child trafficking and has the police arrest him based on the fact that he can see his history. Absurd already no? Anyways, they arrest him, trick his bodyguard into spilling the beans and then the police hold a massive operation to arrest other traffickers. Now here is the MC staying low profile, they invite him to a ceremony to congratulate him for aiding them in catching those criminals but want him to wear a mask to hide his identity. Guess what this low profile MC does? Ignores the mask, announces who he is, where he lives and what he does. This also happened when they were trying to stop underground casinos, tells the criminals where he lives and then gets the police to arrest the criminals and tells them his 'fortune telling' about where to look to find other underground casinos. Author completely forgot about it, it's already been well over 60-70 chapters since then and have heard nothing about this, the police has shown up once since then only to stop a fake su*cide attempt who just wanted to eat the MCs scallion pancakes. That part also has nothing to do with anything, the author has little events like this all over the novel just so he can have his MC look good.

[collapse]

This novel is riddled with absurd MC plot shields, incredibly low intellectual characters who attempt to make the MC appear smart but fails really badly, lack of a real plot, lack of real conflicts, lack of being labelled as a real novel. I sound harsh and that's because I am being harsh on it. It is horrible. <<less

I will keep reading this as I got nothing to read that is of interest. This is pure bs novel where you turn off your brain and try to see what power ups the MC gets. It is worse than "I am a Superstar" in terms of powerups and how the MC lives [not the racism, none so far in this novel], in my opinion. As someone said the fortune telling was pure bs in terms of how the author portrayed it.

They could have probably used a better way to... more>> display the fortune telling but nah he just added some random stuff as his reasoning for fortune telling and why he can't say it outright etc. [It probably would have been better if the MC himself got a vague intuition or info from fortune telling but nah he is outright literally a "God" and just can't interfere.]

Anyway, I would only recommend to read this if you got time to waste and got nothing else to do. I will keep reading [skimming by just reading dialogues of MC<-> others] the chapters is easily understood by doing that.

The author seems to be spending 50-60+ chapter [fortune telling] per skill lool and this isn't exactly a spoiler as it's shown early on in the story, the encyclopedia has literally "everything" in the Universe, so basically if the author wanted this could go on for forever and MC would be the "know it all/Can do anything" kind of MC, which is a bad point to me for any novel.

Biggest Con of this novel is definitely there being no plot or goal for the MC, the events are just there cause the author wants it there....

The only saving grace for this novel so far is touching events that takes place, oh and also there are racist or nationalistic view, especially in terms of Japan but I just skip those chapters to get general idea of what the chapter is about :P

TLDR: This novel is basically creating events for MC to show off but the way it's executed isn't that great, one can easily see the forced events...-plot [plot would be the wrong word to use here as there is no plot lol] <<less

Like Superstar, in the sense that MC gets a system that allows him to branch out to many different and unrelated fields.

Like Superstar, the main conflict or focus in the story involves using the skills he gets from the system, to face slap all those random whispers, crowds and narrow minded "professionals" who look down on him all day long and change their opinions at a snap of the fingers like a bunch of irrelevant ret*rds.

Like Superstar, it requires that you suspend all common sense and logic in order to... more>> enjoy, because in most cases, looking down on a low class/ crass MC whose entire set of skills stems from RNG and a system is actually a very normal thing to do, especially since he hasn't earned a single damned thing through his own effort.

Unlike Superstar, its not so openly racist, but then again there's only 200 or so chapters out at the moment, and that's hardly enough to form good sample base. <<less

Its a fun chill novel for half a novel. Then it becomes somewhat repetitive with MC having no difficulties. Then the author kinda loses sight of where to go, so more repeating same situations, but this time MC already so op there is no suspense. And at the end the author just gave up and rushed/axed the end.

The novel started as a fun light hearted one but quickly devolved into a nationalistic propaganda novel. Episode after episode I have to deal with the blind chinese nationalism and racism. I'm disappointed in the author. Soo much hate for other nationalities most notably Japan took away the meaning of this novel. This was supposed to be a fun novel not this piece of garbage. I kept reading despite the urge to quit believing that it will get better but no it didn't and right now I don't believe it... more>> ever will. So I'm quitting. Good riddance.

I don't ever recommend this novel to anybody except if you are an extremely nationalistic chinese person or a researcher who studies how a lightnovel can make you hate a nation like how I despice a certain communist nation right now for their pettiness. <<less

Currently this is one of my top 3 favourite novels to read.

System, Check.

Modern Setting Check

FaceSmacking Check

So yeah, if you looking for some fun I would recommend you guys reading this novel.

This will be an enjoyable novel to read. However if you're looking for serious sh*t stuff, I don't think this is for ya.

(I think) I'm expecting this novel to be similar to I Am Really A Superstar, however the MC will probably have harem and cultivation.

I dropped it halfway and directly went to the last chapter. Nothing to say. The story could be more interesting. But I think this MC can't be compared to Strongest System MC. That Lin Fan had much more cooler attitude and f*cked up every single thing that came his way. Even if they don't come he would still f*ck them up. But this Lin Fan seems a bit restricted. The story revoles around small areas. Like SNS, his shops etc. In TSS MC was cool because of all the action... more>> or things he does but here it only other characters praising MC.

Anyways it was not my type of shit. You guys can give it a try. Maybe you like it.

The beginning of the story was good, funny, there was a lot to write, potential love interests and their development.. I really like MC character (but sometimes it really drives me crazy), I personally don't like those 'Righteous MC' but it was okay and I can get over those small mistakes that were s*upid sometimes. A lot of things were added by other reviewers that might stop you from reading it, but it isn't that bad, you can probably read it and enjoy it, but only if you can get... more>> over the next spoiler I wrote:

Spoiler

But what I can't stand is romance, damn I was pissed, I was okay at 500 chapters with no romance, but after that I really don't know how I finished it, if I knew there was only few sentences about MC and his 4 wives being together only at last chapter I would never read it, sometimes it's really s*upid... If you include a love interests at beginning of the story, then go all the way into it, don't just remember to get them together when you are writing last chapter, I mean WTF!!!

[collapse]

I would give this novel 5 stars if what I wrote in spoiler was realized earlier in the story, but now only 3 starts! <<less

Interesting plot concept where the main character gets a random encyclopedia system that gives really random skill set and rewards, which drives the direction of what the protagonist would do next. It's a fun to read (addictive really) but the ending was an extreme disappointment (rushed ending for some reason while the story could have continued developing).

Heads up warning for potential readers:

romance is really not there. It may seem like a harem with cute interactions, but the protagonist lacks commitment so nothing really develops (til the end time skip which... more>> really does not explain much).

Do not expect much logical reasoning behind the system, or explaining of why he gets it even.

Martial arts, yes but lacks the adequate action to make this an action pack novel, and never transition to that cultivation kind of novel either (unless you consider alchemy and Nicolas the dog).

Take medical part with a grain of salt.

Some prejudice (nothing extreme, and it's against Japan and Korea) for short term antagonist.

Attacks key social issues in china (child trafficking, business/gov corruption, etc.), which is interesting. <<less

The bad reviews made me laugh.

Joke

Your head

This novel is literally a parody of the 'I'm Really A Superstar' genre (I'm not sure what the genre is actually called- modern system urban fantasy?) Anyway- yeah, this is a parody. It's not a masterpiece of literature, it's not some compelling and unique novel. If you read to the end, you'd understand why this is a parody- the novel tricks you into thinking it's serious, even up to the end, but then you rethink the ending and go 'Holy shit, it was a... more>> parody all along, I've been tricked, that shitty ending is actually f*cking genius.'

I read this novel before I read 'I'm Really A Superstar' - in fact this was my entry into the genre of urban fantasy lottery system genre (????) novels. It pissed me off with the ending. It wasn't until I read the aforementioned novel that I realised this was a parody and that the ending is actually amazing in that it completely subverts my expectations, on my initial reading I just assumed the author was lazy and/or ran out of ideas/motivation. <<less

Really well done in comparison to other Chinese Modern Day System novels. This is all about being a feel good novel. The MC doesn't really experience set-backs or struggles since the system conveniently gives him skills he can put to use to achieve his overall goals. Half of the time it's him doing something cool or saving lives and then having it discussed online and people being amazed.

No racism, but there were Japanese and Korean antagonists though. There is nationalism, but it's not annoying. MC just adheres to being a... more>> good person and helps others within his ability and attributes it to being a chinese citizen who follows the core ethnic values. He doesn't repeatedly bring it up that often either.

Regarding love interests. Throughout the novel he never confirms any feelings until the end part of the novel as he's too busy sticking his nose into everything and acting like a hero.

Spoiler

It ends with a harem. If you love it or hate it, it's up to you.

[collapse]

Probably the most annoying thing is going to be the fact the story arcs repeat themselves. A lot of the content is similar.

MC hears about a trouble => MC arrives => MC solves => MC gets praised

It's pretty much wash, rinse, repeat after a while, adding onto the new abilities he draws from the system.

Not a realist novel. If you're going to try and fact check or debunk chinese mystics like fortune telling because it's not real, then don't bother. Novel's all about gaining skills, looking cool, ignoring love interests pursuits (until the end), and being praised by the public via social media. <<less

A nice and relaxing novel. Loved it all the way. I end up wanting more chapters but it's not a bad ending, even though it ended very suddenly.

No complaints, as I didn't have many expectations after reading the reviews before even starting this one.

Hence, I just laughed and smiled at the funny parts, occasionally got angry at the disgusting villians and had a nice time enjoying the novel.
