The Husky and His White Cat Shizun

Description

Mo Ran thought becoming Chu Wanning’s disciple was a mistake.

His shizun was really too much like a cat while he himself was a dumb pup who’d only slobber and wag his tail.

Dogs and cats were different by nature; originally, the dumb pup didn’t want to reach his furry paws out to that cat.

At first he thought, dogs should be with dogs, like his shixiong, beautiful and tame like a cute Japanese Spitz, and the two of them together would surely be a match made in heaven.

Yet, after having died and reborn, after having lived two lives, the one he hauled back each time to his den in the end was always the one he couldn’t stand at first: that snow-white kitty shizun.

It has everything I love in a cultivation novel along with all that angst. Be ready for buckets of tears and the twist and turns of the protagonist. The ML may appear problematic at times which he is but don't jump to conclusions just yet cause there definitely will be answers.

I LOVE, LOVE part 1 and 2!!! It’s sooo good! I must of read it like 10 times already. But part 3 is so hard to get through bc of too many twists in the plot that it honestly ruined it for me. Hence, why it’s only a 4 star.

Still I’ll recommend anyone to read it! I love the mature kinky stuff only Meatball can deliver such a scene (Except the r*pe scene it’s hard to get pass but I understand we need to see how horrible TXJ is.)

Started... more>> out hating TXJ and young MoRan. I’m thinking there’s no way this guy can redeem himself! He’s the worst human being alive!!! He’s a massive mu*der and a rapist! NO way I’ll like him! Then part 2 &3, he grew up and changed into the most wonderful, sweet gentleman. I’m head over heels for this guy! Only in this novel would I ever fall in love with someone who’s committed these kind of sins. I’ve cried so many tears for this novel and it’s worth it!

You will not regret! <<less

Looking at the reviews I was prepared for the worst of noncon and angst but it turned out fine. Granted, I'm only at volume 1, but so far it's quite funny and not knives all the way like what I expected. The noncon scenes are flashbacks and aren't described in graphic detail.

I find it a bit strange that MC is more of his easygoing old self after he went back to the past, when he was such an empty shell and deranged at his death bed moments before. He still... more>> hates his master but is coming to realise he may have loved him instead. I think what he felt for his Shimei was a crush and idol/puppy love, while his Shifu was his real first love/ obsessive love born out of strong abandonment issues. It's actually quite sad to see how MC used to be a kid with a sunny, earnest disposition when they first met, before the tragedy and constant rebuffs from his Shifu that drowned him in resentment. In truth, I find it quite hard to connect him with the his past self who did all the atrocities.

I usually don't like stories where misunderstandings play a big role cause most of the time the way they're written is s*upid and easily preventable. But here you have two people whose personalities don't mix at first sight - one is too merciless and emotionally stunted to explain or soften his approach to things, while the other has a fear of abandonment and constantly looks for praise in the wrong person only to be bitterly disappointed. So it's believable that their actions and unsaid words will lead to years of misguided thinking and false opinions. In fact, this kind of misunderstanding, or incompatibility really, between people is the hardest to resolve. Therefore it's interesting to see the characters come to realise and be honest with their feelings and the consequences of their actions and inactions alike.

Yes, this story contains r*pe, torture, etc but it tells a beautiful story. If you can't stomach these then it's best not to read it and the intended audience are those who like abusive levels of angst anyway in stories/ 虐文, coughs people like me cough. Honestly speaking, it's not even that bad? I've seen worse. In this story, because the MC and ML gradually get closer in positive ways, it makes their romance realistic and something I can root for despite the past horrors.

I haven't finished it yet so I don't know if the MC will totally redeem himself in a satisfying way. I have faith in that, however, I'm still a bit hung up over the beginning of the MC's characterisation. It doesn't make sense how in all his flashbacks he's this gloomy, angry and hurt guy and the moment he reincarnates his personality reverts to his pre-tragedy self. Yes he still struggles between anger and love towards his teacher. But you'd think it he will start off less carefree and sane given how insane he was when he literally just died. I don't know why this bothers me so much (taking 0.5/1* off for that) but I'll keep on reading and tally my final score when I complete this. <<less

I love this novel so much... This work made me experience so many emotions. In the beginning the only thing I wanted to do is to close it and never open again. I felt very bad because of Mo Ran's attitude to Chu Wanning and didn't underatand how anyone can like this novel and especially Mo Ran. But 100+ chapters gave me answers to these questions. Since the 2nd volume I wanted it to never end. The plot is really fascinating, although I have to admit that in the end... more>> the plot twists became too rapid and in some places illogical. But it definetly doesn't cross a lot of its merits out.

One of the best things here is the characters. You won't find anybody absolutely good or bad. They all have motives and reasons for their actions. You can understand them, but to love or not is already everyone's own choice.

As for me, no words are enough to describe how much I love Chu Wanning. He became my favourite character from all the novels. It's incredibly that someone can love so faithfully no matter what. His relationship with Mo Ran in the second life was so soft and delicate, that barely killed me becuse of its cuteness.

I will read it again for sure. It's certainly worth the time spent on it. <<less

This was a little slow going in Book 1, pretty good for Book 2, and then in Book 3 it all went downhill for me. I don't like novels that r*pe and mindbreak generally. That said, the story was interesting enough that I pressed on to the end, but definitely not something I would read again.

I hate MC. That's all, have a nice day...

Okay, no haha.

It is a good novel, good plot, good characters, really interesting, but for the moment what I mostly want is for MC to die in a lot of pain and ML to have a good life and forget MC forever, because he is too precious for this world and deserves better. But since is a love story I can guess they will end up together. So even if I haven't finished yet, I want to say: Everything about this novel... more>> is nice, except for the main couple. Please, MC doesn't deserves him. My precious white cat, there are plenty options for you to choose, why him??!

If they don't end up together, it'll be a perfect novel for me, but well... I'm pretty sure that this is not the case.

Anyway, I recommend it. You should read it, even if you hate MC like me, it's worth it. <<less

I just finished reading this novel, and I absolutely love it.

This novel is one of my favorite along with TGCF/ HOB.
Everything is perfect. The slow burn love, the self-destructive love and self-restraint, the prideful but lovely.

The characters are well introduced. Actually I thought how was Mo Ran going to change after rebirth?, isn't his hate towards Chu wanning the same? But I like how the author made turns in events and Mo Ran realized his mistakes from his past life and started to be a man who he really wanted to be and he understood Chu Wanning didn't hate him and he was always there for him.

This novel is truly a novel worth reading. The character development is great, the storyline is interesting.

Unfortunately I do not have much to say that hasn't already been said, I just want to add another 5 star rating on here in hopes that more people can read this masterpiece.

Be prepared to feel actual, searing pain in your heart. And then have meatbun nurture you for a few chapters. Sprinkle in some pain and angst. And then stab you viciously and repeatedly until you can't breathe.

Reading this novel was like being taken right into the novel itself and watching it unfold like watching live action!

This novel is like an adventure that sucks you in. The story, the characters and the plot are all well written. You just have to read it!!!!

The only thing I hated bout this novel is I hated the ended. It's a happy ending, but somehow it's not how I would prefer it.

I didn't like that Mo Ran and Taxin Jun both shared a body. I know they are both same person but that is just weird, it is like chu wanning is cheating. That's why its not my favorite novel.

AHHHHH! This is one of my all time favorite novels! It's full of angst, which is incredibly heart wrenching and sad, but also tooth numbing sweetness and fluff. At times you'll feel like beating the MC to death, but other times you'll cry for him and want to give him a big hug and wish him the best. The ML is so tragic and amazing, I love him so much, and my heart cries for all the things he has to suffer through. Brilliant book. I am still on chapter 278 but I have no words to describe the sheer pain that I am currently in... I am suffering. The world building is phenomenal, the characterization is just- WOW. Dialogue, writing, EVERYTHING about this novel is just perfect. Side-characters are all well-developed and don’t serve just to move the plot along. In the end, you root for them all. I love how the “villains” in the story all have a history. Most of them aren’t bad guys for no reason, I feel like... more>> the in-depth characterization of these people makes you really think. What makes a person do what they do? Obviously not excusing their actions, but it gives you that extra depth that you might not have considered before.

The author must be a genius, because it’s difficult to create such a book that has so many plot twists and heart-wrenching (and heart-warming) situations. This is the 3rd wuxia novel that I have read, and I must say it’s my favorite. Personally, I even rank it higher than MDZS. Maybe because it’s slightly longer, but I feel a really close connection to all of the characters. What I love most about this novel is how flawed the MC and ML is. Not only him, but a lot of the other characters also have flaws. They are so... human. It makes the story realistically good and angsty. ugh, I just wanna roll on the floor and cry.

Now to address the criticism surrounding the r*pe aspect of the book. Yes, I agree that it’s irking that the author decided to go into such detail about the eroticism of the r*pe. This makes me question the author’s intention just a bit... but in the end I feel like some of the criticism is misguided. The author clearly uses this to express the redemption arc, to distinguish between love and lust. though yes, the constant scenes were in some situations not necessary. I also feel that a lot of people who criticize Mo Ran haven’t actually read the novel until the end. I don’t want to post spoilers but at a certain part of the book, everything makes sense. He isn’t a shitty person just because he can be a shitty person. Guys, if u read after chapter 240-270 or something, you should know that this story is one about self-sacrifice. Not everything is as it seems. So please finish the story before making final judgement. Anyways, this story will be forever etched in my heart. How truly beautiful. :”) <<less

There is already a completed English translation of this and I'm done reading it. I can't post the link tho since I deeply searched it on google and I just deleted the link lol. To be honest, it's already months ago since I completed this. This story is a roller coaster ride and angst. It hurts the fact that the Mo Ran hates Chu Wanning so much without the real reason and behind his shizun's strict and unforgivable actions. But I can't blame him tho since Chu Wanning is a... more>> silent person and doesn't know how to express love and care.

This has also a bit of comedy. It's so cute whenever Chu Wanning gets flustered around the Mo Ran hahahaha. Anyways, all of Mo Ran's view about Chu Wanning changed when Chu Wannning died.

Spoiler

Yeah Chu Wanning died but Mo Ran goes to the underworld to find and revive him

[collapse]
When I read this novel, I got mixed feelings. Hatred, love, angst, hurt, jealousy, pity, and many more. I really cried the part where Chu Wanning died and his hardships when he carried Mo Ran on his back. It reminds me of the MC in Scumbag Villain's System when he self-destructs for Luo Binghe.

If you want some intimate chapters, it starts in Chapter 190+. Before that chapter, it's a roller coaster ride. Ugh. I've been reading many BL novels but in different sources and never been in novel updates. This is my first review here.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐

My rating is 5 stars. Because this novel lets you experience different emotions. Not gonna lie. Highly recommended. I accidentally pressed 4 stars lmao. Sorry about that. <<less

First of all, I want to mention how good this translation is. Some of the others out there? Total Google translate horror show. So hats off to them!

Ahhh, what can I say about this story. There are some lovely poignant moments and some downright heartbreaking ones. The character development is so good and just when you think you know everything, you're hit with a new bit of information. I know there are people that hate Mo Ran, but if you're unfamiliar with the story, you're in for a surprise. The... more>> hint is in the somber moment when he struggles with confusion over why he was so cruel in his past life. He knows on some level but he cannot reconcile the vileness of Taxian Jun Mo Ran and Mo-zongshi. Hang in there. All will be revealed. This is not his full redemption arc...

This is an appendix to my original review

I was fortunate to find an edited version of a machine translation of the remaining chapters. All I can say is after reading the second half of this story, I AM UNDONE. I ugly cried during several scenes. One scene I am unable to escape from in my mind. I feel like someone broke me apart and I need help to be put back together. It's days later and I can still tear up thinking of certain scenes and lines. The author's attention to the storyline and characters is very thorough. By the end, you have closure for every character of note. This story is about an enduring love that transcends lifetimes; a love that survives self sacrifice and a hidden agenda that relies upon its destruction. It's also about brotherhood and love born of hero worship/adoration. Chu Wanning & Mo Ran will forever be in my heart ♥️. <<less

Overall: 4.75/5 (rated 5/5 on review system)

As others have stated, rated R. There is r*pe, unhealthy relationships/obsession, and gore in flashbacks (and some gore in present time). Relationship during present times is fairly respectful and without non-con.

Story: Cultivation setting with rebirth. MC was the errant disciple of ML and spiraled down a path of violence after a beloved fellow disciple dies--an event for which MC blames ML. With heinous deeds such as imprisoning/torturing ML and destroying multiple sects under his belt, MC decides to take his own life at... more>> the beginning of the story and is reborn into his teenage self. There are a few old enemies and false friends in the beginning that the matured MC defeats like in any rebirth story; however, refreshingly, the storyline incorporates new events in the cultivation world as consequence of MC's actions/maturity rather than just repeating everything from MC's past.

MC embarks on missions as a sect disciple, interacts with disciples of other sects, obtains his divine weapon, ventures into the Underworld, etc. The overarching plot probably deals with some demonic entity trying to encroach on the mortal world. Still not sure as of chapter 150 on 1/26/21. The story thus far feels more as a medium to develop the relationship between MC and ML. So more character-driven than plot-driven. Still entertaining to read!

MC: The gong. An absolute ass during his previous life (version 0.5), he was the tyrant who conquered the world in a rage of grief and vengeance. MC ultimately had a slight change of heart because of ML at the very end and soon rebirthed into the present story. MC still starts off as antagonistic towards ML (version 1.0) but then starts to understand ML better. By chapter ~120, MC is respected as a grandmaster of the cultivation world in his own right (version 2.0)... and begins to reconcile his more romantic feelings towards ML. The progression of this is great to read.

ML: The shou. Slightly one dimensional: ML is the cold but misunderstood and actually kindhearted shizun, often letting others take credit for his good actions or letting himself get injured so that MC doesn't. Honestly, a lot of the conflict between MC and ML could have been avoided if this self-sacrificing tsundere actually communicated.

Relationship development: Slow burn. This is an enemies to lovers done well! It truly feels like MC and ML hate each other in the beginning. Yet with each scene, MC lets go bits and pieces of his prejudice against ML and the two each become more truthful to their feelings. So much pining...!

Commentary: Misleading title and summary. The story is a lot more adult than the fluffy impression that the title and summary give. Also, ML is definitely a cat but MC doesn't feel like a dumb, happy-go-lucky dog. Don't take that the wrong way. I actually really like MC's character/development and conversely hope that ML gets more character development in the future chapters.

My only critique would be re plot at where I am now (chapter 140s) : to minimize spoilers...

sh*t was going down, baddies were wrecking havoc, the group managed to squeak a victory, but BAD STUFF was still happening... Then there's a 5 year time skip and nothing bad happens during this time?? Yes, the MC gets stronger (and older! No pe*ophilia!) during this time but the plot conveniently decides to wait 5 years for MC and ML? I'm going to assume stuff did actually happen and this will be revealed in the coming chapters. <<less

I definitely did not expect this novel to be the way it turned out... At first I even thought that, yeah, it is interesting but full of cliches.
Guys, it was before I realised that,
Spoiler

after everyone died in the first life, MC had his second chance and you think, oh, now he will fix everything what went wrong before but THEY ALL F*CKING DIE AGAIN!

[collapse]
I thought the story will follow the usual rebirth/transmigration scenario but unexpectedly the novel managed to surprise me and keep me on the edge till the end.
It was so packed with world shattering, hollyshitting and emotional events that you want to shout "author! give it a break! my heart cannot take it anymore", but something even worse happens next moment, you are welcome, dear reader.
And, yes, it did make me cry several times. And, yes, I felt so much for all the characters, even the bad guys secretly hoping they will succeed too against all rules of successful book writing.
Spoiler

I honestly did not expect HE until like the very last chapters of the book. And thanks god it did happen or I would probably have an emotional trauma and damnei phobia for the rest of my life.

P.S.:
Spoiler

though I still do not appreciate the way ML sometimes (all the time) in his second chance life (the first life is not about s*x at all, it is pure r*pe, but this is a story for another day) treat MC like, idk, s*x toy in bed, dude, he is f*cking tired after 3 rounds of s*x, his h*le is not supposed to be treated like this, give him some f*cking break! life.

My head hurts, my wall smashed and my blankets drenched. Easily one of the most unsatisfying read I've done but I can't help reading more-

It's amazing how the author evokes a complex mixture of emotions and how the characters are terrifyingly real. From wanting to choke the MC to patting his head and wanting to hug him, the character growth was done so well.

I don't want to hurt more so I'll be stopping in Chapter 140 for now- and imagine them having good and happy lives.
    1. Thank you translator for the job well done. Reading the MTL made me appreciate the amount of skill and dedication to translate this beautifully. Hope we can have a way to support the translations.
