“I wasn’t born a lucky person, I’m just too strong.”

On his way home late in the evening, Xiao Li found a letter asking for help and inexplicably came to an unknown place. He had to finish the task given before he could succeed in returning to reality. In the legendary haunted school, Xiao Li looked at his companions’ task of ‘survive until dawn’ and then looked at the tasks displayed in his book:

Tell me your name.

Tell me what you like.

Kiss me.

Xiao Li: ????

He was very confused and then refused.

I wanted to finish this story, I really did, but at chapter 66, my patience finally ran out. The MC is calm, level headed, and smart, which would normally be a good thing... if there was a decent foil to his persona or if he seemed to struggle with, well, anything. I'm all for a stalker/obsessive ML, but in this story he just comes off as pe*verted without really doing anything. The MC doesn't struggle at all with these "dangerous" instances and just breezes right through them and any time... more>> there would even be a hint of possible danger, the ML causally redirects him away from it. I was really looking forward to the horror aspect, but
Spoiler

half the time its the MC who scares the ghost due to his always calm/never scared personality, and he treats the ghosts more like minor inconveniences than bloodthirsty evil spirits

, so there wasn't really much horror in my opinion. its a shame, really. <<less

It’s like an episodic tv show; the state of the world and the characters never really change, even though each “episode” is moderately interesting. But after 100 chapters, I want to see character growth. And the MC in this story still hasn’t even shown that he has a personality in the first place, much less growth. There are also a few places where the MC pulls an answer out of nowhere without any logic whatsoever. If this were a tv show, I’d probably watch the first season and enjoy it,... more>> but I wouldn’t watch season two. The translation is great, though, and some of the ghosts are cute. <<less

I am not getting the comedy in this... So far, the MC is just an indifferent, good looking, yet lucky bore of a person and is even somewhat of a jerk. The side characters aren't funny or interesting either.. The ML is definitely the most interesting so far (his mysterious character, his plot in the story, and the way he acts), but I am not sure if this is good or bad.

I will check back when I read more.

I stopped reading this several years ago because I was waiting for more chapters to be translated. I had almost forgotten it until recently, so I checked and found that the translator had completed it a while ago.

I remember that before I had been hesitant about finishing reading it because other reviewers said that the ML was a creep who wouldn't take no for an answer when the MC rejected him on many occasions.

I guess this just shows the limitations of how well a reader can judge a character if... more>> you don't read the entire novel. Not to mention, I think it's a logical fallacy to judge the ML by ordinary standards.

  • The ML is not human, and the MC was aware he wasn't human for the entire story. The ML is not only inhuman, but also

    a god

    [collapse]
, so it's quite normal for his emotions and treatment of a human in a romantic relationship to not abide by ordinary human relationship standards. Judging the ML's character based on human ethics is illogical.
  • The ML never engaged in r*pe or serious dub con. The most he resorted to was a furtive kiss, or "locking up in a little dark room" which was during a dream, and nothing actually happened except the ML watched the MC as he was asleep. That might seem creepy at first, but once you read the whole novel, it doesn't seem that way anymore.
  • The MC craved a type of relationship in which he was loved to the point of adoration, with zero possibility of abandonment. The reason he rejected the ML for a long time was a) the ML appeared in nonhuman form so he was confused how to respond, b) the ML was unreasonable and seemed to have emotional issues, c) the MC was extremely afraid of abandonment due to problems in his childhood with his family. Not to mention, the MC was a very dense person when it comes to emotions, and found it difficult to form or maintain friendships. Maybe that was because his family members had either abandoned (he saw his mother's death as a kind of abandonment, which is normal for people who struggle with grief), manipulated (his dad was controlling/manipulative), or even sought to harm him (his step-mom was outright malicious). Regardless of the reason, the MC was extremely cautious about falling in love, not because he disliked or hated the ML at any point, but because refusal was his self-protection mechanism.
  • The ML lived a completely desolate life without any real positive social interaction until he met the MC, so it's natural for him to have a twisted and clingy mentality since the MC was literally his only light in a life of utter darkness. The fact that he wants to exert control over the MC but knows that would harm him, and chooses to not force the MC to do things he doesn't like, seems to show to me that the ML is actually a very decent guy. Especially if you compare this kind of ML who wants to control the MC but never dares to, to other scumbag MLs in countless BL stories who never hesitate to r*pe or force their romantic partners just because they have domineering personalities.
I guess if you want to describe the ML, rather than "creepy voyeur", it would be better to say he's "lonely and craving social interactions with innocent and kind humans"... you should watch the Hollywood film City of Angels (the German film Wings of Desire from 1987, has a similar style but much better quality) in order to get that vibe. That's a famous film, where the main character angel can be considered to be a voyeur if you look at him in a negative light, because he loves to watch humans, and desires to have interactions with humans.

I really liked the comedic aspects of this novel. Most supernatural/ghost stories tend to have a heavy, dark atmosphere, where countless characters die or suffer mind-numbing violence. Instead, the author chose to use irreverent humor to lighten what could otherwise become quite depressing. I feel like the skill required to create truly funny stories is a quality that critics and readers don't appreciate enough. I mean, I know of a few novels which tried desperately to have humorous anecdotes or have characters appear witty, but the result was quite disastrous. <<less

Honestly, romance wise, I was a bit hesitant because of the ML however it did proceed smoothly afterwards because both the MC's and ML's personalities seemed to mesh really well together. Plot wise, oh boy. It was honestly very engaging and I was quite intrigued about that instances and how to solve them. Though be warned, Xiao Li is an unreliable narrator. The things you are shown and the things he reveals later on are vastly different.

I've read it years ago, it was one of my first "horror" novel concept and I loved it. I just spent last week to read it again, and after years of reading horror novels, I can see why some people says its lacking.

The story itself is not super scary to my opinion, some parts yes but overall its mostly comedy and mystery.

I absolutely love Xiao Li (MC), and the ghost friends, it's one of my favorite trope where MC is not scared and is actually on friendly terms with... more>> ghosts.

I wish there was more teambuilding with the ghosts.

I felt like the end was kinda rushed, there was some informations that was left forgotten, some mysteries unsolved. I'm also not super conviced by ML, but he's kinda like a wall flower so I didn't really cared about him, he's really just here.

But I still feel like I can recommend this novel, maybe is it a good way to introduce " horror " novel to scared newcomers in the genre ! <<less

I liked this in the beginning but as I read on it became repetitive. Maybe I will try again someday. I do adore the MC and ml. The side cast was also quite nice. It is honestly a fine story, it may just depend on your preferences. I kinda forgot about this so forgive meeeeeeeeeeee.

I've read up to 183 chapters. The beginning was very interesting, but the further you read, the more monotonous and fresh everything is. Yes, humor is present, but there is still no hint of the relationship between MC and ML. The history of ML is not clear either... In general, it's getting harder for me to force myself to finish reading, but I think I'll still master this novel. I would like more variety both in the plot and in the relationship between MC and ML...

Now if you're reading this, don't be discouraged by some bad reviews. This novel was an entertaining read since it was funny and has mystery element to it. I've always loved mystery novels so if you're interested in those type of novels, I recommend this.

More like 3-3.5 stars, but it's the first unlimited flow novel that's held my interest enough that I finished it.

My main issue is the ML. I think if the author wrote a better ML it would have made the book more interesting and made the MC's character better.

ML is a pe*verted yandere and his "history" with the MC is weak. ... more>>
Spoiler

seriously he loves him so much because when MC was a kid trying to get away from another kid use ML and the bought him a popcicle as compensation.... this lead to ML following hom for years and fell in love.

[collapse]
ML in the begining made me almost drop this more than once, his character is too much right out of the gate. The ML in the last half of the book becomes tolerable but his presence weakens. Also still not exactly sure what ML is the god of, his backstory was kind of confusing.

MC is the cold Shou type, which is fine, if he was paired with a different ML. I didn't particularly like the MC, didn't hate him either, just kind of meh. Also not sure why the MC's father and family were even in the beginning as much as they were, they are completely unimportant.

You also have to kind of turn your brain off. The author obviously wanted a clever detective like Sherlock, but many times the "reasoning" was just pulled out of thin air with no details or concrete clues to back it up. Just don't think too much and you will be fine.

I loved the ghosts that became friends/forced friends with the MC. Some were given more development than others, but all the interactions amused me. The author is also more respectful to other countries than most Chinese authors, I was pleasantly surprised. The author was even nice about the Japanese and Korean teammates, in my opinion that is worth a star on it's own.

The ending was interesting, but could have had some foreshadowing sprinkled through the book, it all just felt like the last instance.

The translation was good, but many typos, especially in the middle chapters. A good editor could fix this. Also 1 of the main side characters name gets a different translation halfway through, but they didn't go back to correct the earlier chapters, which I found odd. Regardless, thank you for the translation!

Spoiler

lastly, why wasn't the white cat mentioned at all in the end of bonus chapters?! He is okay right? The black cat too?

I thought at first "don't judge a book by its cover"

But, after reading it through 1 till 11. I notice that some of other reviews can be taken with a grain of salt. If you read crowd of evil spirit before this. Than you can try it yourself how it is.

For me it's because the story line of this story are a bit low than crowd of evil spirit, so I felt it a boring. The MC how do I say it hurmm... well, yeah with that type of step-kother... more>> can't really blame him but, he could be happy anyway. Like your step brother was not wrong for being born. The parent are, don't expect something good from other towards you when you were not good to other and yourself.

Anyway, , I would come again when I forgot or when I'm extremely have free time <<less

I liked it. It's not a masterpiece by any means but it's enjoyable. The protagonist is can get a laugh out of me under any and every circumstance. I know some people have a problem with the ML but I like him.

Spoiler

His personality is a little possessive, potentially a little yandere but he always suppresses any unhealthy thoughts. Besides the protagonist is really into that and wants that type of almost suffocating and obsessive love so it's all good.

The little ghosts friends are adorable! By the end of novel even the most notorious of ghosts have become family which is really heartwarming.

At the beginning some of the details on the instances or lack thereof threw me off a little but they got a lot better as the story went on. I strongly suggest you give this one a try even if only to for a few laughs during the instances.

I’m leaving it at 3/5 because I didn’t really get too far. I thought the premise of the story was interesting but it was poorly executed. As another reviewer said, the author lacked talent when setting up the instances. I can tell this from the first arc alone, which made absolutely no sense and was only solveable because the MC was lucky, making the instance itself seem meaningless... After that, I forced myself reading to see if maybe the author improves as they write more instances (as some of the... more>> reviewers claimed), but from the looks of the start of Arc 2, it isn’t like that diksosksowos. At least, it isn’t like that immediately T.T

Overall, my rating for this story is actually closer to 1-2 stars out of five. But since I haven’t read most of it, I decided to keep it at three for now. And, maybe, when I have a little more patience later, I can reread it knowing that I shouldn’t really read the story for the survival aspect (which isn’t really taken seriously by the author) but more for the ridiculous wins and the (apparently) weird romance between the MC and ML. I think I can enjoy it better with that in mind. <<less

Oh gosh man what a good read. Interesting premise and I love how the author crafts their characters - including side characters and mains.

probably one of the better protagonists ive ive read from BL novels, its up there with TYK and KOD in my eyes - the MC develops and his thinking evolves throughout while still keeping to his own style.

really love it, thanks rainbow for translating! Always know its its a good read when its by rainbow mushroom!

Love.

This is more comedic mystery/thriller than horror IMO. The ending is great, the found family here is adorable with great characters. The first chapter does NOT represent the actual story at all beyond showing the Mc's complete apathy towards most of the world. Someone said it sounded very poor little rich kid to them, and I can see where they're coming from. But you find out slowly what the whole story is. It's just not infodumped so you have to be a bit of a detective.

MC is one of those... more>> kooky apathetic types who is just totally out of the norm. ML comes across as a stalker at first but he and MC only work because of that. Neither is normal.

ML never crosses the line beyond occasionally thinking some over-the-top things before reining himself in. It's not THAT type of story. In fact I'd say MC is just as weird in some ways. It's just more hidden and revealed over time whereas ML's weird is shown from the start.

I honestly loved it. Don't look for face slapping here though. Most of the humans you want to get slapped don't really get punished. It fits MC though. He doesn't care about most of the world. <<less

Laughed throughout the whole novel. If you are feeling down, this is the perfect novel for you! Honestly, I loved the MC cause he is so fearless and cold in a sense. But I do feel bad for him cause he lacked love since a long time ago and when he got all of that warmth at the end, it was so sweet and cute. Though the so-called warmth is from the ghosts he knows.

I also like the ML because he is super devoted and cute. The way he speaks... more>> through the little yellow book and in real life is so different that it's hilarious. He also never fail to speak truthfully and show his affections so I think he's one of my top favourite MLs.

Spoiler

I honestly found it endearing that he fell in love with the MC a long time ago and spent all his available time just watching over the MC.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Their relationship was so cute cause they both want everything of their partner. Like they have similar wants and needs from a relationship which made them match really well. I also love the ending because the MC became god and now the both of them can end forever with each other, which is something both of them wants from each other.

This novel is freaking hilarious!

I was in stitches so much just reading it. I had a lot of fun on it.

Xiao Li is just so casually freaking overpowered but it doesn't come across as clichéd. The way he solves inneach arc is very refreshing and different from what I've read in other novels.

I would totally go back and reread this again on a bad day. That's how much thischeered me up.

What I like about this are the backstories of ghosts.. I meant— it's all ghost stories and you guys put them in low review? Well this is a horror novel that is trying to scare you... So yea. I like how I read this more specifically at night to feel the stories more...

Btw I kinda like the MC, yea, he's smart- lazy, but he's quite caring okay? And he's just lucky— and lhis luckiness puts bad luck to ghosts pfttt

It was good!! I couldn't care less about the male lead at first, but after they started getting together it became much more bearable. I recommend just skipping any part about the romance or male lead mentions until he finally started to manifest into instances with the MC. I enjoyed such an easy going horror ultimate flow novel without having to worry about anything threatening to the main character.

Another thing that's frustrating is that some of the ways he used to connect with ghosts are so ordinary that it's a... more>> little let down. I'm talking about the Atlantis instance in particular, it's an important clue instance but the way he interacted with the ghosts felt really muddled like the op had no clear path on which direction to take the story anymore or what they're doing. It's a little bit like they dropped the ball there, and a few other times like the God of death instances, but other than that it's alright.

Overall, I think it's a good novel. Worth reading, I was persuaded by the other reviews to drop it at first after reading the first instance because it really wasn't scary to me and I felt bored. But I love the idea of collecting ghosts too much, so I ended up coming back and slowly started to enjoy it after the MC gained a sense of existence in the forums. It takes a few instances, but the middle and end ended up being quite nice. Happy ending so no worries here. <<less
