The entire novel to structured to setup the ending. In fact most of the novel isn't all that great by itself, it's pretty bland actually. Definitely not worth reading if you are not willing to stick it to the end.
The novel can pretty much be divided into 3 part, the present, the past and the conclusion. The first part is relatively lighthearted and calm, with no major conflicts. The second part more serious and emotional. These two part actually seems like 2 different novels, and to be honest, at the time of reading, pretty random.
However, all of these end up setting up the conclusion really well if you could believe. I definitely couldn't help but cry as the novel was reaching the end. It's remembering everything that happen in the novel, no matter how random and meaningless they were at the time, and the epiphany when you realized how each of those events meant for the characters that really delivered for the story.
Personally this kind of progression for a tragedy novel is not a bad choice. Although the early parts of the novel really doesn't deliver very much from an emotion stand point, there nothing like that sudden unexpected punch in the gut.
In summary, read it if you like tragedy and can stick through a reasonably long novel. Else if you are expecting a satisfying experience throughout, this is not worth it.
Also, there is only ever one MC. This much is pretty clear fairly obvious after the initial meeting, and the story doesn't attempt to hide this.
