Versatile mage is the reason i started reading novels. I watched the anime and found out it has a novel. I read all 2600 chapters which were out at the time.

The MC is definitly someone who cares about people and tries to save them if he can. The best way to describe the novel is a mixture of School and action, which makes it more refreshing then pure fighting. He is pretty smart but not to the point of "planning 10 steps ahead" like in many other novels.  

Very well written and i would definitly recommend it.
