I believe in imperfections. I only give out 5 stars once every blue moon, which for the past 5 years of me consistently reading web novel, only happened twice. So don't be put off by the stars, under here (my personal 4 - 4.9 stared) are some of the most brilliantly written novels ever.

Most of them kind of scream

"If you love us that much, why don't you just give us five stars?"

That precisely why I don't want to rate it directly in NU as my strict rating system will have effect on the overall rating of the novel.

Sha Po Lang is a bold recommendation because this book....this book is one hell of a book. I have a bunch of problems, while at the same time is helplessly, emotionally entangled with this novel. I'll try my best to convey what I think about it without having my own biased comes into play.

The whole book, the world settings and politics are one very ambitious work and I cannot praise Priest enough. As I read I could tell just how much works and plannings had been put into it, so much so that I fear for the root of her hair (seriously, I lost my hair trying to follow the plots, it could've been worse for the author herself). This work really encapsulate the spirit of Priest as a writer very well.

The good part about this novel is it is a serious work. And it is very god damn serious. The plots, politics, everything, is almost impressively logical (considering how complex it is and the author could have just snuck one or two plot holes in and no one would have even bat an eyeslit) but, Priest stood her ground. The characters are excellent too. Priest knows very damn well how to hook us with her characters. Gu Yun (with the exception of Luo Wenzhou and maybe Zhao Yunlan) is probably my most favorite characters created by her, and the relationship between the leads, is as always very well developed. This one is even too well developed :P Now these are all the desirable things about SPL.

The not so good part tho....this book is a series victim of her "overly complex" crime. I haven't yet read all her novels, but among the ones I've read with the exception of the last 20 chapters of Guardian, this has to be on the top. SPL is good, it's a page turner when I'm looking at it, but the moment I drop it and go do something else, I'll have no intention of picking it back up because reading it requires too much of my brain power and it's so tiring. Finishing this book took me so long. I love Gu Yun so much and sometimes not even him helps, but the moment I successfully convince myself to pick it back up, I would be sooo engrossed. I don't even know if this is a sign of a book being good or bad. That's why I feel so conflicted about SPL.

The way I look at this book is, if you have an inspiration, or a character that hook you, that you want to follow them (which most likely you will). Then you'll have the best experience ever. My personal inspiration is lamely enough, the long awaited live action. And just being able to imagine Tan Jianci as Gu Yun is an experience already!!

But If you had never been a huge fan of Priest's novel. This one might not be for you. Even if you like some of her works, it still couldn't be guaranteed that this one is for you.

I personally love it, but hold a huge grudge against it as well so....... <<less
