More seriously, a very good (if flawed) book. Shen Yuan/Shen Qingqiu is enjoyable as the protagonist and I am thus very fond of him, though he occasionally becomes the minus-IQ stallion novel character which he claims to condemn; Luo Binghe is sweet and nicely designed but sometimes goes too far, though considering who he is that makes sense, I suppose; the side cast is not as memorable as I'd like (beyond Liu Qingge, for whom I would kill were it not so likely that he would kill me first) though I believe some of the extras (MBJ & SQH in the aeroplane extras, most prominently) begin to deal with this and the breadcrumbs of the reality behind the original story (PIDW) are quite compelling.  In all fairness, part of this shallowness can be attributed to SVSSS's nature as a story intending to parody many tropes typical of the stallion genre - the world into which SY transmigrates was not exactly brimming with depth at a surface level. However, fandom has treated SVSSS really well and if the end of the book leaves you wanting more I would certainly recommend delving into different AUs and character POVs. 

It's much shorter and more lighthearted than MXTX's other novels and can thus serve as a good introduction to their work - I wouldn't call it a masterpiece but it's comfortable and I wouldn't miss out on it. <<less

I have a lot of nostalgia for SVSSS, hence it placing first on the list, but I absolutely adore 'How to Survive As a Villain' (manhua ver. 'To Be or Not To Be'). The main couple is great (both individually and together), with a romance which is neither too fast nor too slow, and though there are some misunderstandings typical of the genre the misunderstandings are, well, understandable! It gets solved within a reasonable amount of time rather than being too hellishly stretched out.... more>>

Pacing messes up a little bit mid-story (if you read it you'll know when); however, this is only a temporary issue as it quickly steadies out again.

That aside, what I love most about HSAV is that it gives itself a lot of breathing room. Many of the Danmei I have read tend to treat the plot as something to dress up the main relationship rather than as being important in and of itself, but in HSAV there is a lot going on (with reason) behind the scenes which is unrelated to YHQ and XY. Their relationship isn't built because of forced plot and contrivance so much as it forms in spite of it, which gives them a genuineness I don't often see. Furthermore, this allows other characters to expand beyond the cardboard-cutouts so typical of the romance genre, I have not cared this much about any other side characters beyond Liu Qingge before and even those of them whom I dislike as people I can respect as characters.

Also, before I take my poor bis*xual heart to bid this review adieu, this novel has lesbians which are! not! turned into a fetish! No spoilers on who they are, but their relationship is really sweet and I hope you enjoy seeing it develop as much as I did.

Hoping that someone translates more by the author in the future, yet in the meantime, I simply wish them all the best in their pursuits! 吉祥如意 <<less
