Mostly started reading this because the translation was completed and actually thoroughly enjoyed the first 120 chapters because the main and side characters are fun, the romance is juicy, and the translation was excellent in addition to being completed! The only real reason I dropped this is because I felt like I'd gotten all I wanted out of it - the characters were succeeding at their work and the romance was happily completed. I obviously can't speak with certainty because I didn't actually finish the novel, but I genuinely don't know where else the author could have gone with the plot. It's finished as far as I'm concerned! Side note: too many descriptions, even for me. We get it, the worldwide famous models are shockingly and exceedingly beautiful! <<less

It especially sucks because I thoroughly enjoyed the first arc! Basic premise is that a technology that allows people to actually enter the movies they watch as a cannon fodder character and interact with the story - the main character enters horror movies and changes the plots, encountering the mysterious ML throughout the movies. The technical details about this new technology are definitely skimmed over and, after reading the explanation for the ML's presence, it's clear this isn't the kind of novel one should read if they want tons and tons of thoughtful detail and worldbuilding. For me, however, I'm okay with that, since the idea is interesting enough for me to read regardless. As far as characters go, they were all pretty boring and the romance was nothing to lose your head over, though it was still cute! I might pick this up again eventually regardless. Right now, however, I'm putting it on an indefinite hiatus as the translator has changed and this new translator doesn't edit their chapters, not even to check so much as whether they're using the same tense from sentence to sentence. The first arc's translator used different MTL platforms to cobble together their work and their grammar was better than the new translator's!  <<less

OG review: I've only just started this novel but so far I'm really loving it! The translation is really good quality, first of all, and the jumping from different worlds to different worlds is definitely going to be a fun ride. Both the main characters are clearly blackhearted to the core which I LOVE and the horror aspect is really fun. I haven't delved into horror novels up till now but this one has already captured my interest and makes me want to check out more! <<less

UPDATE (1/26): actually so f*cking pissed off right now. The author had the audacity to have her two main characters and their ridiculous We're Not Gay, This Love Is Just Extra Special trope laud their relationship over a minor canonically gay character when he expressed a little bit of disbelief and jealousy at them being together. Like, the trope is one thing (that already puts any novel on thin f*cking ice for me), but to have the gall to show them repeatedly showing off and bragging about their happy gay relationship WHEN THEY SUPPOSEDLY AREN'T EVEN GAY THEMSELVES is just insulting. And another thing too; the canonically gay character in that scenario is portrayed as promiscuous, jealous, and embittered, whereas another canonically gay character from a few chapters earlier first pressured MC to hook up with him, and then when MC didn't agree he nearly drowned him and ended up sending him to the hospital. Does anyone see what's f*cking wrong with this? The actual gay characters are at best spiteful, at worst actual villains, while the two "straight" main characters end up in a happy little same-s*x relationship? Huh?? Extremely disappointed and disgusted with the choices this author made.

Entertainment industry, modern day - the two main actors in a gay romance film end up falling for each other in real life. Honestly this one is quite good? It's a lot more intense and angst-ridden than I anticipated, but so far it's pretty well executed. I can really feel the tension between the main characters on the basis of so many things about their dynamic and situation - the fact that they're both men in the public eye, the potential intermingling of their feelings and the feelings of their characters, the (fourteen year) age gap, and more. I think this is the sort of romance that's very...fated, somehow? As in, it doesn't really feel like they fall in love gradually as they get to know each other, but are more thrown into their feelings due to desperate attraction and impulses they can't even explain themselves. And in my opinion, this is a pretty difficult romance to pull off in a way that feels genuine and believable, but I think the author has done a really good job here. Entertainment industry settings don't really hold my interest because they're often so reliant on the romance alone, and if that isn't compelling + the plot is lacking then there's never a point to me wasting my time continuing consuming the content; but the pacing of this one, the tension and necessity to keep the relationship secret even after they've gotten together, just really works well here.

I will say, too, I think the author takes the large age gap very seriously and is portraying it very realistically? It doesn't come off as egregious or particularly questionable, but at the same time you can feel the difference in MC (24) and ML's (37) levels of emotional maturity, passion, and caution, as well as their acting ability which lends some nice drama to the mix (MC struggling to remove himself from his character's feelings while ML can do so easily and yet still feels residual attraction). I think this age gap might feel uncomfortable for some. However, it's important to note that they are both entirely consenting parties. The parts they play in the movie are much more unequal, but in reality, Xia Xingcheng and Yang Youming are both just as hungry for each other as the other, even though it is true that XXC is more willful and passionate due to his emotional immaturity compared with YYM's experience. The trouble with age gaps is the potential of pressure from above, aka the older, more mature party taking advantage of someone young who doesn't know any better. Here, though, XXC is the one actively gunning for the relationship. He has to (figuratively) push YYM to give in to the feelings they both have for each other and that's important because YYM is so cautious, so mature, that if XXC wasn't so insistent they would have lost each other. I don't know. I love age gaps like this in fiction, so it's exciting to me to see one done very well! <<less

I have no idea what's wrong with me or why I cannot for the life of me stay interested in this webnovel!! This is twice now that I've completely lost interest in it after around the 90th chapter. I made it to chapter 115 this time but, to be brutally honest, at any point during my day there's nothing I want to do less than pick this up again. I might (heavy emphasis on the might) try to find a summary of the end of the novel and see if it picks back up with any sort of engaging plot beyond the main couple figuring out their lives together, but as things stand I genuinely... more>> don't care about getting to the actual ending. I mean, both Zhou Sheng and Yu Hao are working through their issues with steady uphill progress and are in a really solid and uncomplicated relationship. There's nothing for them to chew on or grapple with, really, and so there's nothing keeping me as the reader engaged in their story. I know they're going to work out fine in the end because they love each other and the book is HE, so I don't feel like I need to know the ins and outs of their ups and downs as a couple. I feel bad because this is the second time I'm dropping this and it's not even because it's poorly written or anything like that, but it just really isn't keeping me engaged and I don't want to keep feeling annoyed every time I see chapter 115 saved in my bookmarks to read later. Hence, I'm tentatively saying I'm done with this book for good.

Previous comments: Read this a little over halfway in early 2020 but dropped it because the main couple had gotten together and I was too lazy to stick with an established relationship (especially in a modern day, urban fantasy setting). Picked it up again (march 2021) because I love feitian yexiang but have yet to actually finish any of his webnovels for ongoing translation reasons, but this translation is completed so I figured there was no excuse not to finish it! I started over from the beginning and I'm appreciating it so much more this time around, partially because of my attitude change about danmei webnovels in general. This year, I'm focusing on appreciating and paying more attention to the plots and individual characters in these books, not just the romances and main couples, and having such a mindset is really helpful for a book like this. It deals with complicated themes that include su*cide, depression, lost love, and abuse of a variety of sorts, which not only the main characters have to help others out of, but they also have to deal with themselves. Zhou Sheng especially is an incredibly impactful character for me this time around - I really see myself reflected in him in ways that consistently bring tears to my eyes. At the same time, of course, this book is about healing and growth and escaping your darkest places to find your way to the light again, which is wonderful. It's victim-focused; it's about building yourself up anew even when you thought you would never be able to, told through brilliant psychological fantasy settings, which is both exciting to read and inspiring. All the characters in this book are full and well-written, charming at times, heartwarming at times, frustrating at others, and they make for a really fun cast. It really feels like you form a friendship with them as you read, as they form friendships with each other!

The romance, too, is really bittersweet for a while, but in ways that can be chalked up to reasonable reasons. Zhou Sheng is messed up, and he knows it. He's not prepared to deal with a relationship, and he cares too much about Yu Hao to go into anything with him half-assed. Yu Hao, too, for a while is pretty fragile and has to work on himself and his own situation even though he loves Zhou Sheng a lot. But even while they aren't dating, even when they bicker and fight and clash, what's tooth-achingly apparent through all of it is how sincere their relationship is and feelings for each other are. Whether they're friends or boyfriends, they love each other to the ends of the earth. They're the sun and the moon - entirely inseparable, despite their differences. I think it might be easy to read this and write off Zhou Sheng as a cowardly jerk who can't work up the gall to properly convey his feelings till Yu Hao is prepared to move on, but if anyone did that I would bully them forever, lol. Don't do that! His character is too well-crafted for that! He has his own issues and his own problems and his love for Yu Hao and fear of hurting him are both what keeps him away from confirming their relationship for so long and what finally pushes him to do just that at last. Yu Hao knows this too, and loves him very much, so! Putting it plainly, they are perfectly imperfect, throughout all their trials and tribulations, and really have a love for the ages.

Past comments (dropped list): A large part of me doesn't want to admit that I'm officially dropping this, but at the same time I really just do not have the energy to keep up with it anymore. The characters are wonderful, the story unique and intriguing, and the romance is achingly sweet and satisfying, but (as of chapter 93) I simply feel that the story has finished for me. I mean, Yu Hao and Zhou Sheng have given up the device that allowed them to enter people's dreams - now it's just a regular mystery novel, as far as I can tell? And additionally, they're fully in love and happy together! Even if they do continue entering dreams later on, I don't personally feel a need to complete this work. I am genuinely so disgusted and annoyed by how this novel has devolved over the past fifteen or so chapters. I really, genuinely enjoyed it so much before that - the plot was fun, the MC was a bit of an idiot but also relatively intelligent and hard-working, and the ML was very fun in how he struck such a noble and intense figure as a demon king while also willfully misunderstanding and pining away. While this isn't necessarily that unusual of an event, considering this is BL, after all, it still is so bizarre considering the MC has been so unquestionably, confidently heteros*xual in his orientation while showing absolutely zero interest in the ML. I'm not kidding, he really does seem like just a straight dude caught up in a BL plot - he's so adamant about his heterosexuality that he literally convinced me, the reader, that he wasn't just putting on a show and being a tsundere! I wasn't expecting them to properly get together for at least another twenty chapters because of how little care and affection he seems to have for the ML. He really only ever helped the ML out of pity or gratitude, never anything more; which, speaking of ML again, what a f*cking loser he turned out to be? As soon as he has s*x with (aka, forces himself upon) MC he turns into the most wishy-washy, simpering, and kind of conniving jerk. He doesn't really care about the fact that he assaulted the person he's supposed to love, but rather, all he's worried about is MC not letting him have s*x with him again or something? How scummy is that? And he started out as such a regal and cool figure, too - I have no idea why he's regressed like this into someone barely recognizable. The relationship is in shambles, the characters have fallen apart, and the plot is basically all but forgotten. It's especially frustrating because this one started out so charming and fun, and it's become a total mess of a story just over halfway through. Do not recommend! 2/10.
