The Peng Society for Gentlemen — a secret friend-making club for the homos*xual men of the Great Xia Dynasty. Its services were designed to help its members along in their quest for their lifelong partners. Upon paying a monthly fee of fifty coins, members could get themselves listed in The Pengornisseur after providing a self-portrait, a mailing address, their age and hobbies, as well as a self-introduction. All members would receive a copy of the monthly publication, and they could communicate with one another in private using the information in The Pengornisseur.

Wu Xingzi, a bachelor about to turn forty, worked as the adviser to the magistrate in Qingcheng County.

Qingcheng County was a place with barely any resources. In other words, it was poor. In the list of counties of the Great Xia Dynasty, it had been ranked at the bottom for the past two hundred years.

Wu Xingzi felt that his life was hopeless: not only was he a homosexual, he was also a virg*n. Even his retirement fund was lacking. Worse still, his looks were… forgettable.

He might as well die.

Hence, Wu Xingzi decided to commit su*cide on his fortieth birthday. However, he was unwilling to remain a virg*n to death! And so, gritting his teeth, he joined the Peng Society for Gentlemen and received The Pengornisseur. It was very painful; after all, fifty coins were the sum of his daily expenditure for ten days! He would only pay it once, and he was determined to succeed on his first try.

Great premise, lacklustre execution!

Keeping in line with the Ancient China Grindr theme, the story starts off well. I especially loved that the MC is not your typical peerless beauty. The MC, in this story, is unassuming, kind and incapable of scheming. His best quality is his childlike simplicity and sincerity. He's not exceptionally talented in literary arts, music or military affairs. He's a simple, plain-looking guy!

The ML is scummy for the most part but he gradually improves. I would have preferred if he had grovelled a little.
There's a ton of smut in this book but it's not well written and it honestly sounds very cringe and painful. Most of the time, the smut was repetitive and aggressive and not in line with the emotional mindset of the characters. 1 star gets docked for smut-baiting readers into this story.

1 star docked because the MC is repeatedly described as 'old quail', 'old fellow', and 'old man'. The poor guy is only 40 and yet, he was repeatedly described like he had one foot in the grave.

The story drags after the halfway mark and the political scheming is childish at best. Very very well-translated though.

I can't say how much this story just suit my taste in danmeis. I reaaalllyyyy love the story especially our mc!!!! I love how the author made mc's character complex. The depth of his character made the characters in the novel misjudge him several times. He certainly inherited his father's, who was a Top Scholar, wits. If not for him not being interested in studying plus his carefree attitude, he might even enter the imperial court. Im sure of it.

To our ml, it's really unavoidable to not to hate him... more>> because he's really scum in the first half of the story. BUT!! He already redeemed himself with help of his subordinates of course.

To the white moonlight, he's greediness is his downfall.

I'm soooo disgusted with the villain. My heart just hurts thinking about what he did to our MC and his adopted son.

All in all, this story is a must read!! Especially if you love smut!! 😋 <<less

Pretty good. It's funny in a toned down way. MC, Wu Xingzi, is pretty much the opposite of ML. He's a virg*n, humble, and kind. ML, Guan Shanjin, well as I said he's the opposite. So it was super satisfying to watch ML denying his own feelings for MC and be in unbelief that MC wasn't gonna chase him. We get to watch ML chase MC again and again. So satisfying. Oh and ML has a white moonlight too. It was fun fun seeing

Spoiler

the white moonlight (more like a white lotus) trying to provoke MC but MC is so humble that it was like water rolling off duck feathers. He doesn't notice the provocation at all and assumes the WM has good intentions. Ah, MC is so cute.

[collapse]

Oh, there is smutty smut. There's one scene that I'm going "Oh emmm geeee! I can't believe that turned Guan Shanjin on! He is such a perv!!!" You'll know it when you see it. (Rolling my eyes at GS)

My main gripe with this is that you'd think the MC is a frail old grandpa by the way he's described. Almost every paragraph he's referred to as "the old man"/"the old quail"/"the old fellow"/"the old thing". He's only 40 lmao. It's such a turn-off.

Like yeah, I get that people back then only lived to about 50-60, there was even a section noting it. But if the author managed to write in something as ridiculous as self-lubricating holes for the sake of romanticization, please at least let me picture a... more>> MC that looks like he had some botox done.

The rest of it was fine and good. One of the better white moonlight + substitute + scum ML = redemption arc danmei out there. MC's personality was also really refreshing. Tbh though, I was actually more invested in the side CP (Hei'er & Rancui). Really wish there was more about them. <<less

This was amazing. It was everything I wanted.

If your looking for a honestly charming MC, a ML that actually is in love and has emotions, characters that are more than 1 dimensional and are unique, and hardcore smut: read this.

I’m not sure what I expected, but I’ve never enjoyed a novel more. The author respects their characters and the readers, and takes their writing seriously.

amazing. Truly amazing

This story gave me so much frustration it's unbelievable. I'm not even mad at how the ML treats our MC but how can they both be so incompetent?! Like just f*cking talk with each other!! And then all those shitty side characters trying to help the main character when all they do is shit!

The MC is already depressed as it is but they even f*cking encourage him to... more>>

like the hell is wrong with u. We all now the MC is lonely and even thought about killing himself and now that he finally began to like the ML for real they want to separate them for their own good??? How s*upid can one person get? The worst of them all is this f*cking store manager called Rucai or sh*t like this. How pity can a person get? I really had f*cking anxiety that the MC would try to kill himself again. But we don't have to worry, it's for his own good after all!! Just because he doesn't like the ML? He isn't even related to the MC but still tries to pock his nose into their affair! Why?!!

Even if the ML was shitty to the MC at least he gave him a live purpose!

Alright after that being said the smut was pretty good but I just couldn't read on or I would have died from anger because of those actions from the side characters.

I sincerely hope it's gets better towards the end as I actually liked the story but I genuinely can't abuse myself further right now. <<less

Absolutely amazing!!! A good read for a beginner like me heh 💕

MC is a lonely 40 yo who planned to commit su*cide since there’s nothing to look forward in life. Before ending it all he decided to confess to his crush and somehow it leads to him a pigeon grindr system where he collects d*ck pics for personal collection (lmao). Relationship with ML started as a tryst at first but it gets tooth-rootingly fluffy soon when ML realised he’s head over heels for MC. Just thinking about this story makes... more>> me wanna read it all over again.

Love how raw the depiction of adult loneliness by MC, especially for someone who have been hurt deeply by the one he loved.

Also best part is while ML is possessive as hell, he’s even more afraid to hurt MC so no r*pe (theres a scene where ML injured MC but not for s*x purposes and ML snapped out of it before anything even happen) 😩 <<less

This is the whole p*rno novel in case you don't know.

One thing I like the most about this novel is the fake that our shou (bottom) ran away from the gong because of heartbroken and the fact that he will never be his.

Second, I hate the fact that the gong didn't suffer more than that since he basically ruined our shou's already fragile heart.

Third, not much segg scene after they got emotionally attached to each other, so not much of it from half until finish.

Mainly started reading cause of smut but has plot itself and amazingly the plot was good. Drama, twist with everything it was interesting. இ﹏இ
At first MC seem to have low self-esteem but wasn't the case, he just didn't have many desires and expectations. He was just realistic and knew his limitations. So he can move forward quickly than others. (-_-)

MC with ML 's was like if it's impossible to have relation with ML then let's taste a little and leave. MC treated ML as one night stand. (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) ML already had someone loved (though at first seemed one-sided) but MC's treatment hurt his ego. And due to this reason their relationship developed further. MC's carefree nature made ML to change his feelings from that teacher of him who was playing with his emotions to genuine MC.

Well, must read if you like smutty & hot story with interesting plot & dramas.| ^_^|

Yep that's what I'm feeling when I finished reading this coz I don't think I can even read something better than this (on my opinion coz this is exactly the otp trope that I love the most). When I'm reading this tho, I would feel conflicted as for what's happening but after knowing that there's reason behind why they've done that, I'd feel relieved, and also A LOT OF BLOOD and pengornis action HAHAHA

would have given it a 5 but, , , ,

the age gap kinda bothered me a bit, cus im pretty sure the ML is like early mid 20s, , and it was hard to visualize the MC in general as he is a middle aged man (40) but described as if he were in his 20s especially during smut scenes.

the first half was very enjoyable, the best part being how consistent characters are, especially MC. and its refreshing to see a lead thats not either good looking or very... more>> talented. MC is very relatable. also love....

Spoiler

.. how the there was a turn table and the ML fell hard first cus he kinda an as*hole at first hahahaha

[collapse]

however my biggest complaint is the second half. especially the last arc ish. I personally felt the drama between the leads was unnecessary and I did not appreciate how complicated it became, , roped a bunch of side chaaracters, , , and quite a few plotholes. I felt like the issue would have been easily solved if the leads literally sat down and had a talk. I personally get tired of too much drama, especially unnecesary drama in romance.

however based on reviews, it seems most people did not mind. overall it's a fun read. OH and the smut is very detailed, I was not prepared at first haha <<less

I was not expecting depth from characters but I was wrong.

Though there is not a great plotline but depth of characters is what is worth mentioning.

MC's character is really good. He does not fall for ML head-on just because ML treats him well. (ML treats all his s*x partners with great care). When MC says that he has good self-awareness he really means it. He is a foody (which kind of irritated me few times because of time and place) He really made me cry when he opened up about... more>> himself.

Smut is very very detailed. <<less

My comment can be summarized in one word, "mind-blowing". Having read a lot of novels with this type of genre, this still left me in awe. MC's character is so consistent from end to finish that you can't help but love him (of course, not more than the ML. Let's give it to him.). And the ML has flaws (which I like, it is something so realistic and oh he compromised, too.) To be honest, at some point, I hated him. Like, what???

Now let's talk about the smut, as a... more>> rotten woman myself, this gave me a satisfying sexy time. If you are into detailed bed scenes (with consent), you're on the right book. Trust me..

Overall, the story isn't something new but you'll definitely enjoy the ride nevertheless.

Give it a try! <<less

Alright, this is a really good novel. The translations were not only good, the author was also good. I have to admit that this is my first time reading a novel like this. I have indeed read lots of yaoi novels, but never one where the MC is older than the ML and also the bottom. Like, the general yaoi culture has always been the opposite where the ML is old and the MC is young or something.

Now, onto my favorite parts of the novel. Please be noted that there... more>> are heavy spoilers.

Spoiler

From the very beginning, you can see how this novel is a smut novel when the MC starts his collection of pen*s drawings from the pigeon mails.

Anyhow, my first favorite scene of the novel is the s*x scene between MC and ML. Yes, it does indeed look like ML is forcing himself into MC, but rest assured that the MC was completely consensual. MC places no emotional attachment to their s*x and that is my favorite part about the beginning s*x. Despite how handsome and rich the ML, MC does not waver his choices and will always stick with his reasons. At the same time, you will also find out that MC is really...a lonely person.

Moving on, my next favorite part of the novel is when ML basically “kidnaps” MC to Bastion City despite knowing that MC does not have any wishes of moving out of his county. Although, if this did happen to me, personally, I would be very pissed. However, with the experiences of MC, he gives no care and basically just allows ML to do whatever he wants as MC really does not care about what goes on in his life. All MC cares about is how to save up enough money for a good enough coffin for when he dies (angering ML to who knows what level). This is my favorite part due to the fact that we learn a little more about the past of MC and why he loves to remain ignorant of the sarcasm in the world. At the same time, this is a good romance development between MC and ML as ML starts becoming more possessive over MC without knowing why. Although, I do admit that I hate Mr. Lu.

My next favorite scene is when MC realizes that he lives ML, but behaves no different than when he was not in love. At the same time, he also gives up on his love as he believes that ML is in love with Mr. Lu and only using him as a substitute since ML could not get Mr. Lu’s love. Knowing all of this, MC once again leaves the city without knowing during the wedding of Mr. Lu and the Yue daughter. When ML finds out, he was so angry that he spat out blood. However, I do not feel bad for the ML and I also feel good for the MC.

Yes, it is sad having to leave the person you love. However, if you know that your love would be a failure, it is better to let go sooner than later because the longer you stay together, the more pain it breeds between you two. MC made a mature choice with the information he had on hand as the ML was keeping secrets from him. In the end, the ML brought upon his own suffering. ML never confessed his love to MC, so MC never believed that he loved him. At the same time, ML was always sweet and caring towards Mr. Lu, so naturally MC would believe that ML lives Mr. Lu, not him. This is the reason why I love this part of the novel. The angst is emotionally deep as MC has his own traumas of the past, different from the ML. What ML faces is a trauma of having no one who could make him feel like home despite having an entire family. However, MC has a trauma of loving and trusting people due to the fact that he had been betrayed before. MC is an orphan and so with no one who loves him, MC forces himself to look at everything with face value.

Next, the ML finally knows how to communicate properly with MC. As I have said, I really like how the ML had to suffer a bit when MC left. Communication is key in a relationship and all their relationship was, was mostly physical. With this, it is reasonable that MC would leave with the belief that he was unworthy of ML and also only a substitute.

In the end, this is a good novel as the characters learn to grow together. MC becomes more open and shows more of a greedy side compared to the past. He also no longer has suicidal thoughts which is probably the greatest thing out of the entire novel. I do not advocate for su*cide, but if I was MC who lived a repeating cycle of loneliness, I would also want to die. As humans, we cannot bear a burden by ourselves and partners are needed. Without one, we basically have no one to rely on when we are struggling. MC had no family, no close friends, and no romance. It was understandable that he would want to kill himself on his 40th birthday.

ML also learns to love people. He who was originally uncaring of others learned how to care. Not only that, he also learned what the emotions in his heart were. Confused between love and simply yearning, ML had long set up a line where he got lost, causing a misunderstanding between him and MC. However, the moment that he learned how to read his own heart was the moment that the novel flourished even more if I could put it that way.

[collapse]

Alright, my long entry of spoilers is over and the reasons why I love the novel is now done being written. I feel like I just wrote an essay though. XD <<less

Extremely enjoyable read. Be aware that they have some pretty hardcore kinks in the story. About 50% aren't kinks I'm interested in but what I really appreciate is that the writer went for it hard. You got to respect the dedication to smut.

But other than smut, I really liked the story. As the story progresses, you start to see that there's more to both characters than what we see on the surface originally. While it has a light-hearted tone and a lot of events are treated like a comedy, there's... more>> actually rather serious themes throughout the story. But it never gets too dark or heavy, primarily because of the main character's attitude towards life.

Spoiler

While it seems like the MC is rather carefree and obsessed with dicks, it's also pretty clear that in the beginning, he's actually very depressed. He latches onto the art of dicks (lol) because it's the first thing in a very long time that gives him pleasure and which is solely just for him.

The ML shows character progression and I love that ending with what he does for MC. And while on the surface ML and all of ML's friends blame the ML for spoiling his first love into becoming a useless parasite, I really appreciate the glimpse we're shown from the ML's first love's POV, where we find that his first love has actually been angling to be the ML's white moonlight since the ML was 12 (!!!), just so he can live a luxurious life. It rather explains why ML has such a warped, obsessive view of his first love for so long.

When the ML promised to tend to MC's parents' graves once MC has passed on (even though it would hurt ML to outlive MC)...... that was such a big moment for me. It shows how much ML's feelings have changed for MC. It was a very moving promise. Although of course, MC didn't believe him and merrily skipped off, which was exactly what ML deserved. :D

[collapse]

I also can't agree with the takes that the ML cheated on MC because the ML was still obsessed with his first love when he started with MC. The MC did not see ML as being in a committed relationship with him and it's not long into the story when the MC finds out about being a substitute for ML's first love (to which MC's reaction was 'what is wrong with ML's eyes, I don't resemble this extremely gorgeous guy at all!' and 'Oh, they do match each other really well! Does that mean I can go back to my d*ck pics now?').

The MC has been treating their relationship like a tryst for a big chunk of the story! Which I find hilarious, because ML thought he was treating MC as a substitute but MC actually doesn't even care about ML all that much in the beginning. He's regularly hoping ML will leave so he can go back to admire his beautiful artwork of various dicks. The schadenfreude is delicious and I enjoy how much ML suffers through the story, especially after ML falls for MC but MC remains clueless about his own feelings. <<less

You definitely can’t miss out on this novel. There are so many unique qualities in these that I couldn’t stop reading.

I love the MC the most, I wanted to hide him and protect him!! Haha. What I love about this novel is that it’s kinda a love triangle between the MC, ML and the ML’s unrequited love but the MC was not bothered at all about it!

He was like “Oh, me and ML are just having a fling, I’m not expecting anything” lol and when the MC fell for the... more>> ML he was like “I love the ML but if I can’t have him alone, I’d rather not have him at all” and left. Wooooh!!! So badass!! It felt so satisfying when the ML chased after the MC after.

Spoiler

I hated the ML at times when he was negligent of the MC and went to his white moonlight but that’s the premise of the novel and I also understand that the ML loved that other person for years and he can’t forget him instantly that’s why it was even more satisfying when he started chasing the MC

[collapse]

I also really really hate the ML’s white moonlight like arghhh I can’t fill this page enough about how much I hate him.

I just wish this story didn’t end just like that, I wish for more side stories!!! Like with the MC’s guard and the manager huhu I know there’s something going on between them but it wasn’t told huhu I really wish for more!!! Also maybe a chapter or 2 about their life when they return to Bastion City!

Anyway, this is just a great read! The MC is just so precious and the love he has for the MC (and pergonis) is just so funny in a way haha! The smut is also 👌 lol haha <<less

Much thanks to the translators for doing such a good job! At the beginning of this novel, I didn't like the ML who appeared as an overbearing, scum gong who already had someone in his heart and seemed to have taken the MC as a replacement. Unlike your usual BL novels, the MC is also an older gentlemen and described to be very plain looking but he has a mild temperament.

I didn't really have high hopes for this novel but I'm very glad I continued. I still don't know if... more>> Pengornis is an actual word relating to that but I guess you learn something new everyday. As the novel progresses, there's the funny interactions between the couple, as well as the very detailed smut scenes between them. The side characters are also amusing as well, as they help to push the plot along. Contrary to the usual angst, the couple actually has a heart to heart which explains everything (Chapter 87 is probably my most favorite chapter of them all).

Edit: Just read the last chapter and I'm very pleased. Even though it didn't answer all my questions, I think it wraps up quite nicely.

Pengornis—I will never forget this term...

& yes, I read this novel for plot

Now for my actual two-cents:

It's basically tinder in ancient times. It's funny, I love the concept, it's also just p*rn with feelings. MC is hitting 40 & he's a virg*n. Rather than checking off his su*cide plan on his 40th birthday, he decides that he's going to become a member of the infamous Peng Society & receives the Pengornisseur—simply a catalogue of men ready to mingle. & Just like modern times, what better way it is to... more>> greet your potential partner than by trading hand-drawn schlong pics! Ahh, when ancient times overlap with modernity. MC is lonely, ready to mingle, & also is crazy lustful. Yes, there is a lot of pa-pa-pa so be prepared! It's really good smut tbh, so if anything read it for that quality. ML is your typical scum gong- hot, packing, & a brutish jerk. MC is a bit of a mystery to me. He's seemingly timid, but he gives of an air of composure, someone that you can't exactly push around. He may look naive but he sure is incredibly resolute. Now the plot... is there any?? Lol I read it for the smut guys I honestly can't focus on the actual plot. It feels very dog-blood-like for me, so tread carefully. <<less
