The beginning was funny, interesting and original. The premise of a good romp between a strong bandit chief and a beautiful emperor mistaken for a woman is unique enough to pique my interest but the story quickly devolved into an orgy of bloody sadism and continuous cruelty lol...

Definitely this is a one-of-a-kind novel that is as hardcore and extreme as one can expect when one of the MC is a complete psychopath. Yes, Jing is the very definition of a psychopath by textbook standards.

I don't think "stockholm syndrome" and "unhealthy... more>> relationship" applies to this story lol... and Jing is way worse than just a "sadist emperor". He is an unrepentant psycho who clearly knows, accepts and embrace his psychopathy and moreover, lives in a world that allows his psychopathy to run unrestrained and unlimited. Jing is rather unique for an ML in the sense that there really is nothing redeeming in his character or behaviour, thus completely unlikable till the very end of the book lol

As for Cang the bandit, his fate does break my heart. Throughout Volume 1, he is under great mental torture and physical pain. His mixed feelings towards Jing was very well portrayed.

Volume 2 shows a more lovey-dovey side to the ill-fated couple and a change in Jing's heart and behaviour. While I can well suspend my disbelief and wholeheartedly accept that love can change a person (after all I am here for the romance!), there are a few incoherences in plot and behaviour that bothered me. For example, Jing is portrayed as being an all-powerful tyrant who can dispose of and kill people on a whim and has done so in the past... then why not behave the same towards Minister Zhang? Allowing a court official to humiliate Cang several times does not fit Jing's temperament... Jing being concerned and sensitive about his reputation at court also not consistent with what was said about him before... when he was crazy obsessed about his uncle, was he not concerned about his reputation then? when he had his concubines killed for a simple scratch and some other silliness, was he not concerned about his reputation then? Also, Jing's excuse for sleeping around is quite pitiful lol... hard to believe that such an OP character would think that the best way to "protect" his lover is by sleeping around... all these just seem like plot devices to create more drama... melodrama is what I hate the most in novels <<less

I must admit I was thrown for some loops there. I liked it.

Should I be concerned if I find it wasn't phased by any of the s*x scenes? I have seen worse (not saying this is not graphic, I have just seen some sh*t).

I think this novel is sick in one way and sad in another. It's hard to imagine one individual liking their rapist or even liking someone who had hurt them badly. The s*xual intimacy between the two were abnormal, force at most, hardcore, and have tons of blood. I don't know how Lu Cang lives through all that without medical intervention or medical issue down there.
Jing is someone who is selfish and spoil. I'm not sure how his parents raised him. Sounds like they spoil him. As an emperor he does what all emperor does, uses their power to indulge in pleasure even at other's expenses. Regardless of his out of earth beauty, I think he's a slut.
I can't understand Lu Cang. Jing has humiliates him, hurt him both emotionally and physically, cages him in the palace, isn't afraid to kill him at one point, and a cunning asshole who doesn't keep his words. His beauty is the only good thing about him. Despite of Jing's thousand and thousand of flaws, Lu Cang found something loveable about this crazy man who is more of a psycho than anybody alive in this book. Plus, the fact that Jing's at one point became afraid of his feeling toward Lu Cang. Lu Cang pays a very high price for this and was emotionally hurt while physically beaten. Regardless of how this relationship looks, Jing is emotionally unavailable and tend to stay that way. Even after he found Lu Cang and confesses his feeling, he never once thought of Lu Cang and the sh*t (yes, the sh*t) Lu Cang has to go through because of Jing's fear. Jing didn't apologize or when he was beating Lu Cang up or when he was raping Lu Cang in the jail cell had he experience fear because Lu Cang could die.

My review will be very much biased since this is my most favorite novel of all time. This story has all I want in it. Seemingly perfect but not so flawless Emperor. Seemingly reckless but actually naive bandit. The dynamic between these two is the most commendable for this story. And Of COURSE, the great plot with pretty males. XD

If there are ten stars for this, I definitely will rate this story as perfect story that deserved the 10 stars. XD

I dont know why this has so much good review. I dont think I have ever been more apalled by a manga or light novel.

The way jing treated lu cang is absolutely unforgivable. And I find it vile that lu cang actually forgave jing just like that. The only reason I persisted reading this is because I was hoping in my heart lu cang will seek vengeance even though I know that's not going to happen. I honestly would have rather killed myself in front of jing just to show how disgusted I am. And it's even beyond my comprehension how lu cang could have even felt a tiny bit of emotion towards jing aside from hate, much less actually love him.

Overall, the reason why I dont like this is because I refuse to chip what little bit of humanity left I have in me. For me, liking this novel means accepting rape and torture, which will never be even at least borderline "okay". Most people think it has a good plot, I dont really think so, the plot is mediocre at best for me. There isn't any twist or shocking revelation. IMO, the tragedy of the novel overpowers the actual content and plot. There are plenty of other novel that exceeds this and without the mental and pyschological trauma it brings to the readers. <<less

Too SM for my taste. Beside that, I think

Lu Cang forgave too easily. He struggled, true, but gave in after just one kneel from the other.

Rather disappointed about that

The storyline is awesome. This is my first yaoi and surprisingly a good read.

The MC is funny, naive and an wholesome man. However the ML is one sadistic beast. I don't really condone his actions. Raping the MC and his uncle. Very dark and yukky.

... hardcore xD

that's it in one word. uhm, basically, this novel is Not Safe For Work, Not Safe For Home, and almost Unsafe For Everywhere xD maybe a closet would be safe... or an underground bunker.

i've been reading so many lovely and cute and nice bl manga and fics that I almost forgot this kind of yaoi also existed. so if you are starting into yaoi, save this for later. MUCH later.

... more>> leaving an alternative summary, because I think the other is a bit misleading.

"Much to the despair of his sworn brothers, Lu Cang, the young and famous leader of a mountain bandit gang, is still single. They kidnap beautiful women for him, but he always rejects them for not being perfect enough, until they bring one particularly stunning beauty who steals Lu Cang's heart at a glance.

Unknown to Lu Cang, this meeting will teach him the meaning of pain and despair, and will test the limits of both his pride as a wulin practitioner and his pride as a man."

basically the story contains violence, blooood (i think only the later chapters don't contain blood x'D), torture, rape, foul language, and... it even made me cringe a few times. but it still will make you read until the end.

The story IS good, and contains a couple of 'wait, what?' plot twists. i'd rate it 5 if not because I think there are a couple of inconsistences with Jing's character, which is a serious flaw imho. this flaw should make rate this 3.

so 3+5= 4.

enjoy your hardcor- erm, I mean, your read! <<less

Seriously.. Even if this novel has an interesting story plot for me, I still hate it.

MC is a nice and lovely, ML is an asshole, not worthy to be loved by MC.

I read several ancient kingdom BL but this ML is the worst above worst.

But this is also quite reasonable. In the real life, unequally love can be happened between couple.

Read it if you like sadistic, cruel and selfish ML.

MC is the only reason I read it until the end. I love his char

Not bad but...

I don’t like the emperor. Selfish, egoistic, and self-centered.

LC is not bad but he forgave the sh*t easily.

I love the hard core Yaoi and S and M for this but I didn’t sign up for heart breaking sh*t the emperor does to LC! Ugh.

also, he (emperor) rapes his uncle while PC is there like WTF?! Insensitive to the point I think that the emperor has mental illness.

Sadistic lover. A devil with the face of an angel.
A twisted romance of brutal and dysfunctional relationship. Be ready for multiple stab wounds on your poor heart.

This book left a bitter aftertaste. Yet I am appreciative of the author's skill at manipulating the fragile human heart. I am also grateful for the author's effort to keep the story real. So real, it left an indelible mark on my mind. To me this meant the author is successful in his/her work since their main aim should be to grasp the... more>> reader's mind and mold it to their own desired shape. A book that is able to control the psyche of its reader is a winner. That's how I see it. And this book had subjected me to various onslaught of intense emotions of amusement, joy, fear, anger, sadness, disgust, frustration, anticipation, surprise, expectation and last but not least love. Yes, love even-though this is a very brutal romance story which I had nearly lost hope of finding a flicker of romance within its pages. Some might reject the ideal of romance in this story due to Jing's (seme/antagonist) violent and selfish way of pursuing love and also Lu Cang's (uke/protagonist) seemingly masochist acceptance of abuse from his lover. To be fair, I too could not exactly shake off the possibility of Stockholm Syndrome in play as I did find it hard to see how Lu Cang as broken as a battered rag doll could ever find in his heart to forgive Jing's incessant cruelty upon this mind and body. Nevertheless how ever twisted their love is, love is still the catalyst of their tragedious joining. Sigh such highly dysfunctional relationship this pair has. I am still worried for Lu Cang's future even upon finishing the book. Afterall, to serve the king is like accompanying a tiger. (famous Chinese proverb).

The version I read was in Chinese Text via TTS (text-to-speech). For the record, I have also read the manga adaptation up to volume no. 5 and am keen on reading its next installment. The artwork is not bad and so far the story sticks with the original novel.

I wasn’t going to write a review but I find it so disturbing that so many people gave this novel high ratings. I had to put my two cents into this.

It was rape over rape and I skimmed through a lot just so I knew what happened in the end. How people could enjoy this was beyond me. ML went way overboard dark and mysterious love interest. He was just a disgusting sick person.

Even as a reader, I couldn’t get over how ML treated the MC. I totally DID NOT get how he learned to love the psycho in the end. I have no word for this.

Please people, do not encourage this kind of rape culture. How ML treated MC was wrong on so many levels. Please do not find this kind of behaviors romantic. This is way beyond dark and sadistic. Apart from physical violence, the emotional abuse he put on MC was so revolting. I just. This is so upsetting that I don’t even have the energy/words to rant about this problem.

Though until now I'm still looking forward to the manhua english trans update.

yes I love this novel but the endinf not so much, I mean I think Lu Cang forgave Jing so easily and the ending was a bit rushed imo.

also check out the account of that latest translator Luxuifer, I swear her fanfics are so nice that I almost forgot the MLs psychotic mind. <<less

I clearly only read the first volume... I clearly have an above-average power of resisting tragedy-novel's abuse... but I still underestimated this one... I was still psychologically... f**ked, way harder than our poor MC. (xD actually... it was not even funny)

If you still want to preserve your heart, RUN as far as you can from this novel... if you are a pure masochist as myself, I dare you to struggle from the 8th chapter unmoved...

With all this, I shall conclude: ehm... I LOOOOOOOVED this novel. Il clearly doesn't deserve... more>> this low rating... It should be at least 4.5/5. I love the characters, been binge read any other work of Chinese historical bl, I came across this one and become one of my favorite. The beginning of book 1 really showed how Jing forced himself upon Lu Cang, and LC developed Stockholm Syndrome tendency, but as the story gradually unfold, it was Jing that later make me vommitting blood of his cheesiness. I also love how strong character LC is, a true tsundere, and though he got deceived so many times to surrender to Jing, but he himself rarely... more>> leave his principle. I love that Jing is god like in everything that he does, leaves no weakness though he love his LC so much. I love that the personality did not differ so much from beginning to end. I came across this story only to love it. I give it 5 star! <<less

So I just finished reading it a while ago and I am not gonna lie...i really hated both the main characters. The ML is a selfish, heartless, prideful, useless, (literally every bad word in the world) son of a bitch. The MC has no damm self respect. The ML rapes, tortures, humiliates (literally does all things bad) to the MC. Even in the end, he never apologized for his behaviour. The only thing ML has going for him is his beauty, other then that, there is literally nothing likeable about him. Also the MC is literally the dumbest person I have ever seen, dumber then the most useless and unlikeable shoujo manga heroine. He doesn't have even an ounce of self respect. Even after going through so many emotional and physical tortures, he still likes the ML. Why?? Just why? Because he is beautiful? Like aarrgghh...I honestly wanted to go inside the book and give the MC a tight slap to open his eyes. After going through so much torture for so long, the MC literally forgives the ML cause he kneels once.... once? I was like bitch, you were treated like a f**king dog, caged, raped, tortured, humiliated, beaten, hurt physicall/mentally/emotionally (need I go on...) and yet you forgave him cause he kneeled just once? once? uggh... like I can't even with the stupid mc😒

I don't even know how I finished this novel. I was literally crying after seeing the treatment the poor dumb MC was getting.

It had great reviews and is so popular so I thought I would like it. But my heart still aches so much after reading it. I have never hated a character more then the ML. These type of books just isn't for me. I still can't get over how cruel the ML was.

I'm pretty sure that this "love" that the MC has for the ML is like Stockholm Syndrome. He's unable to return to his home and friends because of the poison inflicted on him by the ML, ends up staying at the ML's place because of lack of money, then tricked again to be forced to be at the ML's side as a guard. Throughout this he's brutally raped over and over again. The MC even realizes this once he sees the ML raping his uncle, that the MC's own "love" was a coping mechanism for all of the rape.

The plot is decent, even if all of the s*x scenes are messed up and I really wished

it had a different ending and Lu Cang didn't end up with Jing.

I didn't like the MC much in the beginning, but I ended up reading the entire novel just to see if

he'd finally be able to escape from the ML

No holds barred right from the get go. This king shows no mercy. If you're a softie maybe don't read this. It is descriptively brutal in parts and funny in a cringeworthy way in others.

I would have given it 4 stars if it hadn't dragged on in parts and if the world was more fleshed out. As it is I'd say it's a solid 3 stars.

And yes I read it because of the cover art. Kept reading because of the great translation and notes. Stopped when the ML character failed... more>> to develop. Essentially he never really stops feeling like a side character despite being in every chapter with lots of screen time. Kind off reminds me of Bringing the Nation's Husband Home.

On a side note it's amusing to me the reviews that decry Lu Cang's treatment. I feel that they are forgetting that Lu Cang isn't a heroic character to begin with. He's a bandit that leads his men to rape and pillage. I say he's just getting his just "desserts".

And another side note

How does our MC maintain a functioning butthole after enduring all that rough trauma. Leakage everywhere is what I'm thinking.

I don't know what to say. The abuse and s*x didn't really affected me, the one that affected me a lot is how poor my darling Lu Cang is under that crazy psycho's hand. That last part where that sh*tty emperor said he, the emperor was the only one allowed to have children and that he'll forever be childless kills me. My poor Cang ;_: I want to rate 1 just because of that but I'll put my emotion aside and I'll not rate.

With all that said, I would like to tell you that this novel is simply amazing. The way it was written is sickeningly good.

I've read book 1 with lots of tears and goosebumps. A lot of times, I would just tell myself to stop reading cause it hurt so much to think of what... more>> the Lu Cang was going through, but I prevailed. ✌ The thing is, you can understand why Jing is like that. He is the emperor = the embodiment of God on earth.

but he still is a sick b*stard. Though he eventually became an adorable b*astard. Still, I would like to wring him into shape!

Lu Cang is an idiot. A lovely idiot. But still an idiot.

Throughout the book, you'll see the gradual change in their character and their feelings. Their growth and their traumas

mostly Lu Cang. That lovely idiot.

You need to have guts of steel and somewhat an open mind reading this.

yes, there are real life people who are like Lu Cang and become so attached/in love with their abuser. That is also why we can see/hear that some women/men, though being abused physically/mentally/emotionally/s*xually by their partners, still have the will to think for their other half and still stay by their sides. Imagine the person toruting, hurting, abusing, violating you is the same one who gives you pleasure and sometimes a sense of security. Human brain works in a fascinating ways.

All in all this novel's plot is more than good! The story telling is great. The way the characters are written are fitting and very well thought out. But still, this is a novel that you would love to hate. It's brutal and heartbreaking - but it gets better.

like after the half of book 2. Book 1 was so depressing to read through.

Kudos to the author for having written it! Kudos to the translator for being able to endure it! Kudos to the readers that have completely read through this! Everyone deserves a medal!

Ps: literally EVERY CHAPTER in this novel have a smut scene. Sometimes - more often than not - MULTIPLE BLOODY smut scenes.

It's a good read❤❤❤ <<less

Welp at first I thought I'll like it since the idea is intersting. But inventually I found that this story is dumb. The uke was really dumb to fall in love with the emperor who was HIS RAPIST. Whotf is the person who fall in love with hmtheir rapist? And how the emperor punish him is dumb. Excuse me but can you please give me an excuse to rape someone as a punishment? And the moral of the emperor, rape his waifu as a punishment in public just wtf dude?... more>> But I respect the emperor for making rational decision at some things such as keeping his concubines, even tho he love a male. Welp you know in chinase history its normal for emperor has so many concubines, and he still have many concubines and only bed them once for keeping his loyalty to his uke. Being an emperor is hard, especially when you have someoene you really love with ur heart. Being Empress doesnt mean you have to be loved by ur emperor. Tbh the royal family in chinese just choose the best candidate to be a decent empress for born the emperor's heir. And the emperor here trying his best to be a good emperor (even tho he failed at some things lol) while being a good (welp its still rodiculous to call him a goo lover but whatever) lover keeping his beloved wife safe.

The story is rodiculous and hillarious at the same time. The fact that it was ridiculous, it makes it hillarious (for me) <<less

This story was disappointing. It's really everything that takes place after the emperor beggs him to come back.

The topic of the emperor and the heram is just really upsetting and all to justify his cheating and double standards. I thought thing a were going to change and the emperor would devote himself and be faithful to cang but that was my wishful thinking.

He already had some kids before he met cang and the reasoning for sleeping with them once is so dumb. If that was the case, then he didn't... more>> need to sleep with them anymore after one of them had a kid.

The ending was upsetting and just made me mad and ruined the story for me. <<less
