The translator did a good job so five stars for them.

The novel is quite good in the emotional aspect. Makes up for it's minor shortcomings. So five stars for it too.

Some people may think the MC did a 180 but it's just like how the solution to your math problem has been there in front of you all along but you realise it only after you are put through a trial and once you realise it, all the anxiety and unhappiness leaves you. He was a broken being who became... more>> whole later. He did repent for his wrongs and that's a remarkable and rare trait in humans now-a-days.

The ML was designed more realistically and his feelings were portrayed wonderfully by the author. I like the MC more than him tbh but I like him as well nonetheless.

This will remain as one of my most remembered novels for a long time. <<less

Just finished this series and it quickly became one of my favorites!! I love how vividly this author describes things too.

When I start novels I generally try to keep my expectations low or somewhere in the mid-range, but this author went the whole 9 yards on character development. Lee Juwon starts off as a miserable excuse for a human being, but why he's like that really starts to make sense once you find out about his background. The peculiar fact that he has excellent memory, but forgot both the good... more>> and bad details of his earlier life really strikes me as incredibly sad.
Spoiler

Especially the bits where the dungeon got him to remember the last Christmas present his parents gave him being an mp3 player he used so frequently while struggling through sleepless nights it broke?? And then don't even get me started on the fact that his company is named December because it's the month Kang Inheon onboarded as the first member aside from himself!?

[collapse]
The fact that over time Juwon became such an empty husk of a human being that he forgot things like this and acts like a Scrooge based on trauma breaks my heart. While the general public and his subordinate's abysmal opinions of him are completely warranted, I can understand how the events in his life shaped him this way.

Even more than that, it was interesting to get the perspective of Kang Inheon. His feelings for Juwon at the start of the novel were such a mystery for me, and through the course of the story and then well into the after story I felt like I just got repeatedly sucker punched with the complexity of his emotions; in fact, I might even argue that he's more well written than the actual main character.
Spoiler

The way Inheon grapples with being in love with the memory of someone who is no longer that person to point where his love is tainted by bitterness, yet still existing as love in form of sick obsession keeps me up at night. I feel that the magnitude of his breakdown after Juwon came out of the dungeon and started adjusting his attitude seemingly out of nowhere was so warranted, because imagine how scared you have to be for what you've been waiting seven (?) years for to finally happen—what if it's fake? What if the sliver of hope placed in your hands is suddenly and violently ripped away from you; how could you possibly let yourself hope while the possibility for falsehood is still on the table? As an S-Class hunter Inheon can literally stop time itself, yet he can't control his own feelings or the actions of the only person he cares about.

[collapse]

I also find it amusing that during the main story we're just constantly hit with angsty flashbacks, whereas in the after story the author treats us to copious, and I mean COPIOUS, amounts of smut LOL. Main story emotionally brutalized me and after story was my aftercare... these two are so deeply and sweetly in love with each other I think I have toothaches. I see the points others make in their reviews about Juwon's affection for Inheon being kind of sudden, and I understand why—this is definitely a novel focused more on character development leading to romance rather than the romance itself. I'll concede that it really does take until the literal last (after story) chapter for the weight of Juwon's feelings to come to full fruition from the perspective of the reader, but I don't at all doubt the authenticity of his emotions. <<less

Hello, translator here ^^

Though my review may be a bit biased, I can say with all my heart that I truly enjoyed this novel

The main focus of the story is on the character development of our MC, Lee Juwon. He's everything an as*hole can be and more, absolute capitalist scum and an extreme cheapskate. Though as the story progresses, LJW's qualities as a character and thinking process and values are slowly revealed, piecing together and revealing his fleshed out character and backstory. Not everything about him is straight out shown... more>> in the beginning, and the more you read the more you can't help but root for him as he tries to fix his mistakes and better himself.

Kang Inheon, the ML, is also a complicated character. What we see of him is what LJW sees of him, and LJW doesn't know the complete story. Only when he is shown it from a different perspective could the mystery behind KIH's actions be solved. They are both introduced as surface level characters with distinct traits, but the more you read, the more you realize that isn't the full truth.

The story is naturally based on a Christmas carol by charles dickens. LJW faces three visions: the future, present, and past. He faces memories he had forgotten, those he never realized from being too preoccupied with work, and those he chose to ignore. He's not a bad person, he just went down a bad road. I'd say that I fell in love with LJW too just as KIH did.

The romance in the present time isn't the main focus, so some may be disappointed by its small portion in the story. However, KIH as a character does appear for the entire novel. The number of chapters itself is short (but the word count is not LMAO) It ends in 7 chapters, and the rest are side stories. It's not dragged out, and I'd actually like it if it were a bit longer but we can only hope for more side stories in the future.

All the hints and foreshadowing have been there since the very beginning of the story, showing that the author has done extensive preparation before writing the novel. It's like an easter egg once you reread the story and go, "Oooh, so that's what that was!"

It was sad, emotional, funny, and heartbreaking all in one. As I read this during the jolly Christmas time, I really got into the mood. Definitely a novel I'll read again next Christmas to cry my heart out <3

PS, angst comes first, NSFW comes much later... pray for lee juwon

edit after finishing the new extras:

they 😭😭 THEM 😭😭😭

The side stories are mainly just snippets of their daily life and the fluff we've been missing out on for the entirety of the main story. I find it really funny that the author admitted to not being able to write fluff for their couples after they get together haha

I was really satisfied with the new volume as some things I wondered about were finally given a conclusion such as

Spoiler

Yes, Juwon does tell Inheon what happens in the dungeon. He was scared that what he experienced wasn't real, and he was unsure of how to tell him and admitted that he was being selfish in keeping it from him as that may have been the only good memories Inheon had of them, and he didn't want to ruin them for him. He was also scared that what he felt for Inheon was influenced by what he saw in the dungeon, even though he was sure he loved him before that, so he waited until he could confidently say that he grown to love Inheon even more than what he used to. He tells him every little detail (but acted really vague with the psyche part lol) and they're honestly so sweet I was going to combust.

  • I LOVE IT. The amazing dynamic between the MC and mL, I love the MC personality I don't see alot of c*cky and money Grubber MCs and the ML personality is also amazing in public he's friendly, sweet and kind but in private especially with the MC he's cold quiet and reserved which is why MC thinks he hates him, everyone hates the MC because of his selfish personality so when he "dies" they all celebrate except the ML who is getting angry easily and depressed, all in all amazing dynamic I love puppy ML and tr*sh MCs but here I think it's more subordinate and boss relationship

it seems there is plot twist with how it's going rn love how their relationship is slowly being built, also the main story is more about redeeming MC and slowly building their relationship but in the side stories which is kinda part 2 it's focused more on them with smut lol

I really didn't think I would like Lee Juwon so much!! He's obsessed with money and is an as*hole to everyone he meets, but he's not so scummy that it becomes unlikeable (to us, the readers, not his employees lol). Kang Inheon is a seemingly kind-hearted guy who does good deeds and sees the best in Juwon. I started rooting for him so hard when (minor spoiler)

Spoiler

Kang Inheon picked up a really valuable gem from a dungeon and kept it in his pocket to gift to Lee Juwon, because he knows Juwon likes money.. 🥺

Not to mention what happens in the dungeon, showing how much Kang Inheon secretly cares for him. Lee Juwon's character development is also very touching.

I really recommend giving this a read! <<less

It's a great story for those who love character development.

The MC starts out as a person who only cares about money, but as the story progresses, he realizes how mean he has been to everyone around him and how much ML loves and cares for him.

Such a wonderful novel. I didn't expect Juwon and Inheon to have such a complex relationship, but here we are. Very long review/analysis below ^^

Spoiler

Inheon loved Juwon obsessively, he practically worshipped him, he was his reason for living, but at the same time something I realised a lot of people didn't mention was the fact Inheon hated Juwon as well. He hated the person he became, but he waited for Juwon to change because he believed that it was arrogant to think you can change someone. The only one who could change Juwon was Juwon himself. Still, he never stopped trying to show him the wrong of his actions and that was the reason why they constantly argued with each other.

Juwon, on the other hand, knew he was a terrible person. But he didn't care. It was so deeply ingrained in him that it was a dog eat dog world after everything he had been through and he was terrified of having things stolen away from him again, whether it were the people he loved or his money. The debt he carried as a minor to adulthood and the fact he worked himself to the bone (120 hours a week is f*cking insane) slowly became normal to him and he criticized others for not having as much drive because his entire worldview had become twisted. His person became a mess of anxiety that no matter how much money he gathered, it'd never be enough, he'd always return to the same kid who lived in a leaky, small bas**ent room who would starve on some days just to live another day. But that is also why Juwon is such a strong character, because he persevered against the odds and rose up again.

[collapse]

The misunderstandings and feud that continued between the two for almost a decade couldn't simply be solved by communication. What Juwon needed was a reality check, and that was what he got when he was trapped in the dungeon and shown things from perspectives he never thought of. Slowly, he realized he wanted to live, he didn't want to simply survive, but he wanted to live and be happy again. He experienced the memories and childhood he forgot, the ones he stored away to not be hurt again and remembered how joyful he was back then.

Spoiler

Even after Juwon had changed, Inheon couldn't believe that he wouldn't revert to the person he was before, which I found very realistic. Juwon didn't get off with a simple slap on the wrist, he worked hard to show that he would change himself for the better. As much as Juwon did bad, there were also heavily exaggerated rumours about him. Although it doesn't excuse his actions, I do think it gives him more dimension. He overworked his employees, but he overworked himself much more. He wasn't a comically evil rich man who wanted all for himself and underpaid his employees either. He paid them an extremely good pay, which was probably the reason why they continued to work for him.

I think this is one of the stories that need to be reread again to catch small details. It's obvious the author put a lot of thought into the characters and their story, and in the end, everything was connected.

Even though I found the Psyche arc a bit long at first, it makes sense now that I think about it. There are little to no survivors of this dungeon, and Psyche was the reason why. Even if they managed to pass the trials and reach the end, no one had a resolve strong enough to leave. It seems like they couldn't escape Psyche either, since the squirrel's only conclusion was that Juwon made Psyche so angry it kicked him out. However, Psyche set Juwon free after several time loops where it continuously tried to keep Juwon from regaining consciousness of the situation. Even though it imitated Inheon and that's the reason why Juwon thought it loved him so dearly, I can't help but think Psyche itself did love Juwon : (I mean, it even helped him after it stopped posing as Inheon and showed itself as a butterfly to help Inheon bring Juwon out of the dungeon.

Juwon loved Inheon so deeply that he repeatedly broke through the illusion and was even willing to kill himself in the illusion to get out. Juwon didn't want to restart or go back in time, he wanted to meet the unhappy Inheon and fix everything he did wrong, which I found very touching.

[collapse]

All in all, I loved it. The story writing was amazing, the characters weren't two dimensional, and the angst was definitely there. I wished there was more fluff at the end compared to the emotional rollercoaster I was put through, but I was satisfied nonetheless. <<less

5 stars - this was such a pleasure to read, especially since the translation is very good.

Dickens' Christmas Carol has been adapted to death, but this novel is a fresh take and kept me hooked from beginning to end. I'm still a bit sleep-deprived because I needed to see the MC and ML get together more than I apparently needed sleep.

Most other reviewers (especially the translator) have already explained what's great about this story. I liked the MC a lot - his as*hole behavior (at some point it became clear... more>> that he was in fact suffering from major issues, no one is this stingy without it being neurotic, and I'm glad this was addressed in the story) made sense because of his background, but he was also enough of an as*hole that I was kind of shocked and impressed that the ML stubbornly kept loving him despite knowing how bad he was.

ML was well-developed as a character. He reminded me of many, many MLs from other BL novels - completely and utterly devoted, obsessively in love to the point were it probably isn't healthy, overly doting. But it made sense in context and I ultimately couldn't fault him for putting the MC on a pedestal. I'm not overly fond of super doting gongs who make the shou the center of their universe, but I could accept it here.

Smut and romance: I wish there had been more tension in their relationship after they got together - it was mainly just smut (lots of it, these guys are like rabbits, damn) and doting, so it got a little boring. But the built up in the main story was great.

SML: *reader sobs* did it have to be this sad?!

Overall a very enjoyable read. <<less

Don’t let the small amount of chapters fool you, they are thicc. I think the story is very well done and I personally don’t find the time traveling to be very confusing at all. The ML and MC development is soooo good with the perf amount of angst. Also. The smut. Is smutting.

It's a wierd ass novel. Has transmigration but keeps alternating between the real world and past or future worlds.

So it's confusing.

I don't like the MC. Not in the way that the novel's characters don't like him though. I feel like they're all hypocritical a-holes anyways, so their opinions don't matter.

... more>> However besides all that, the MC is hard to like.

I don't like how the book is written. So confusing. I've read Korean Bl's before, so I know what I'm talking about when I say this one is wierd.

0/10. Would not recommend. Just a time waster <<less

Far longer than expected and far less fun.

Although this novel is just 16 chapters, it's more like 40 to 50. Some chapters are super long.

The story is about MC in the dungeon and his "character growth". Well it's more a mix of regrets and crash therapy. It got a bit boring at times and I jumped text a lot.

The extras are where the couple stuff starts... but not really. Different timeliness, 3rd party view... it's more dancing around the topic. I was waiting for MC coming clear to... more>> ML and then starting to grow together but that never happened. Their relationship doesn't feel that good.

To sum it up.... it's OK to read but it's nothing fluffy or short for in-between. <<less

I'm astounded that this novel doesn't have the psychological tag. This is very much a psychological romance!
Spoiler

(And a romance with psyche).

[collapse]

This is a yaoi rendition of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol where the MC is the Ghost of Christmas Past and he must realize it in order to avoid a horrible death and even more horrible aftermath.

It's written beautifully and translated magnificently, it's angsty, smutty and at the end even fluffy if you squint. I've never read anything similar in BL literature so far, so its refreshing originality contributed much to the positive grade, but even if you think you've read something similar to this before, I highly suggest you give this a try!

The translation is absolutely perfect, thanks! It really really helps in making a good story great, specifically in this site.

On to the story. This is basically retelling of the Christmas carol with Korean dungeon setting and added BL shenanigans. There's nothing specifically different compared to others if you look at it in three different components, but when you combine them this story has it's own unique little charm.

I love our MC. He is a proper villain. There's a lot of other MC with the 'greedy' setting, but this MC is... more>> the best one because he went to the limit. Others are greedy because they want to achieve something else, like wanted to be a salted fish or wanted to help the poor or whatever. But our MC have no cause, just endless trauma. In the end, like Scrooge it all get resolved but it's fun to see where it all go wrong for him.

The ML is the standard OP perfect ML who is only obsessive and posessive towards our MC. Nothing really different from any other ML but hey, if it's not broken why fix it?

The smex are very detailed, so you gotta read until the end. <<less

Kang inheon had low self esteem, and believed his love interest could do no wrong. This usually works if the mc/ML are self aware, are in a good mental space and have healthy coping mechanism. Which unfortunately Lee Juwon does not have.

So this led to the drastic situation of Kang silently enduring (happy with the bear minimum) while low-key encouraging Lee's behavior. And Lee Juwon misunderstanding the situation due to his bent sense of self.

This could have been avoided if they communicated openly from the get go, but alas

A really good riff on the classic story "A Christmas Carol, " taking place in modern urban fantasy, with dungeons, monsters, and life-death illusions.

The MC is a modern Scrooge CEO who falls into a life-threatening dungeon that makes him re-examine the light he had lost over the years from his past traumas. ML is a top-level famous Hunter who'd been secretly pining over him through the years.

The story is beautifully crafted with a lot of surprising little twists. The character development is really well-done. MC is a very complex character;... more>> much of the journey is rediscovering his compassion and kindness for fellow humans that had been lost. ML as well, their relationship was surprisingly deep and complex, not your typical "fluffy love." There's a mix of obsession, frustration, disappointment, and hope all intertwined.

My favorite part was actually the ending, <<big spoiler ahead>>

Spoiler

I was most impressed by the time-travel aspect and the last chapter in the extras. At first, I was almost disappointed that the author didn't have the MC tell the ML about his time-travel experience.

However, I soon realized the elegance in the phrase "when we first met."

For the MC, "when they first met" was when he was an adult; the time-travel for him occurred after he had fallen for the ML already. The MC experienced growth through his suffering as an adult, which in turn changed him and his interactions with the ML when he went back to their childhood (such as him not wanting the ML to suffer the same way he had from the broken shoe when he fell down the stairs in the dungeon).

For the ML, it was the opposite. "When they first met" was when he was inspired by the MC as a child. The child MC's words had sparked his hope and helped tide him through the dark days ahead until they were able to meet again as adults.

Which is why the MC, despite knowing that the ML was disappointed that he didn't bring up their brief childhood together, never deviated from saying that "when they first met" for him was when they met in the cafe as adults.

For the MC, their experience as adults were the catalyst for things he did for the ML in their childhood, which is actually a complement to the adult ML and a beautiful closing of the circle.

Really well done.

[collapse]

One star off from the slow parts; there were a lot of flashbacks. They were mostly necessary to tell the story, but I definitely wish the author had expanded a little more on the present/later/fluffy domestic husbandos part, to balance the flashbacks better. The tension/pacing would have definitely improved if the author had detailed the two people's reunions a bit more thoroughly rather than time skipping a lot in the extras.

Great translation. Definitely recommend. <<less

I unexpectedly like this a LOT! Definitely in my reread list!

The MC is a scum/tr*sh CEO who is stingy and doesnt think about other things than work, money and,.. The ML's safety. Even in the early chapter, when I read the novel, I can see that MC trust ML the most. So MC unexpectedly got into a special one-man dungeon that resulted in 100% death. There, he saw the world surrounding him after his death. Everyone is happy, except the ML. He realised that he needs to survive the dungeon... more>> so he can changes the ML's future as he seen in the dungeon. The story changes from his struggles in dungeon and the challenges the dungeon gave him. It was full of good angst? Until the end. The fluff starts only in the extra story. The extra can be a bit boring but the sweetness is overloaded, I actually want more 🤪

+ I love how MC changes his life from a tr*shy person to a renew person.

+ MC has a strong personality and strive through anything he wants. This is why he manages to survives the dungeon, and even

Spoiler

confess first and establish relationship with the ML, since ML is actually a withdrawn person

[collapse]

+ I like how the ML is loyal to his feelings, even though the MC in his heart changed, he stayed with MC till the end. The ML's personality is really unexpected to me when I read the extra, but it is refreshing because in the main story I thought he is a serious person, but in extra, despite his inner thoughts is dark and obsessive, but when he is with MC he is just a normal person in love, sometimes a joker, bluntly told MC is a pretty tr*sh make MC mad and swears at him at another times. His obsessiveness is hidden from the MC and their relationship is actually pretty normal. <<less

A Truly WILD RIDE!!!

For MC and for us Readers. The story was truly a Journey.

There would be a moment where we feel "wait- I'm confused". Even MC himself keep getting surprised by things he experienced.

Anyway MC was indeed the type of person you do easily would hate in reality. So people who hate him does have reasonable dislike. But this is not a story of heartache when he 'find out' why he hated. It's more a journey why he chose to keep living Especially before and after he realise ML's... more>> Feelings toward him.

It's Heartaches story between MC and ML, and the past timeline that will get shown.

The dynamic between MC and ML was Magnificent though! Not toxic whatsoever. But still rather complicated nevertheless untill everything shown in the end then we get it.

When they get together it was Satisfying Confession... and IMMEDIATELY GO TO EXTREMELY HOT NSFW!!! (ʘᴗʘ✿)

All their Full Hot Steamy moment were Seriously HOT AF!!! You gotta LOVE IT!!!

Anyway the whole story was Intriguing till the end. It's WORTH IT!!!
