Ye Yunting, the unpopular first son of the Duke of Qi, was married by an imperial decree to Prince Yong’an, Li Fengqi.

Prince Yong’an defended the northern border and had killed countless enemies, deserving the title of the “War God of Bei Zhao”.

However, when Ye Yunting married him, this bed-ridden War God was already poisoned, his meridians severed.

Ye Yunting was devastated by the marriage. Out of fear of the War God’s reputation, he hid in his own courtyard to live a life of peace. Not long after, he accidentally drank the poisonous soup given to the Prince of Yong’an and died.

Before his death, the Yong’an prince, who was said to be dying, half-knelt in front of his bed, held his hand, and solemnly promised, “You lost your life because of me. From now on, I will do my best to protect your loved ones, so go in peace.”

Later on, he ascended the throne as the emperor, and indeed honored his promise to shelter Ye Yunting’s only family.

In his second life, Ye Yunting still couldn’t avoid the fate of marrying Prince Yong’an. But this time, he decided to take good care of the dying man and repay his kindness from his previous life.

However, he did not expect the man to be cured and then to be impatiently pulled into his arms.

He was held tightly in the man’s embrace: “Follow me. From now on, I will protect you.”

Really nice so far. Both MC and ML are balanced characters who respect and care about each other, and the side characters (for example, Ji Lian and MC's younger brother Ye Wang) also have depth. The court intrigue is easy to follow, and the pacing of the plot is A+.

Wow, throughout the story there was barely any pint where I was suddenly bored or anything. There was always something new that got me hooked so it was a really good read! Maybe I got anxious in the end, but 10 chapters before the main story was over, it kind of started getting a little boring for me, but that was really only a minor point.

As another reviewer wrote, it had quite a lot of cliche plotpoints, everything catered towards MC and ML, that everything they do goes well and... more>> I honestly don’t mind and even like it, because it’s really well done. It’s well written, many characters are highlighted and throughout the story there were these mysteries about MCs and MLs identity that they slowly unveil as things happen.
I really want to hate the emperor Li Zong for what he’s done to ML, also during his rule, but at the same time... as other readers pointed out, he really was a pitiful character. I think especially towards the end, his mind was wonderfully portrayed? And... even though he was the antagonist and all, I felt a deep please the moment he decided
Spoiler

to just reveal everything?!! I was a little... well I don’t really understand what his feelings towards Han Chan was, but he did care a lot. And that moment he decided to fulfill his wish, take back a little control in his life and show him how... he wasn’t as s*upid and oblivious as some may have thought was... quite satisfying.

[collapse]

Its just sad that probably no one really understood him in the end. That he had no one around him who cared anymore. I think, if he was not born in the imperial family, he could have grown up much happier, he probably would have been a precious child ah... tho I suppose whoever grew up in that environment will somehow be influenced by it : (

Regard MCs identity and

his mother... I don’t know, it’s hard to say if I was him if I would reconcile with my parent? I mean, no matter what she said, in the end she abandoned her child there in the Ye family, unsure of if her child could survive or not. She waited that long for the birth and cared throughout her pregnancy because she knew it was the child of her and her lover, only to abandon it in haste at the end?
Anyways, I‘m still unsure, but as long as MC is happy, there is no problem :)

Man... I feel sorry for the Wang woman and child... did t deserve this and could have had a great life... and He Mother, so sad she lost her lover due to conspiracy grr

It was interesting how they solved the problem with „Emperor having male wife“ thing, and the heir problem. Of course, again, everything so it works out for MC and ML, but that’s also nice :)

For all those who care (like me) there is no side CP (like except parents etc, or well

maybe the emperor and the Taifu Han Chan, but not exactly sure what they felt for each other in the end...)

in the main part of the story. You could feel something, but really, it’s mainly about MC and ML.
In the extras you will see a glimpse of
Spoiler

MCs senior brother interested in Ji Lian (MCs book boy/servant (?)), whilst Ji Lian... well mostly has a gentle personality but only with him acts a little... pouty? Idk, it’s hinted on but no idea if he’s interested. There is also a whole extra story dedicated to Ye Wan (the „second brother“) who fell in love at first sight during an encounter in the brothel only to later find out it was a man. Welp, he’s still interested and the other smiled at him mysteriously, so yeah, that’s hinted too.
So yeah, pretty cliche^^‘ all them people around MC and ML are gay :))

All in all a pretty good read! I binged it in one go haha definitely worth giving it a try!

And the translator is doing a wonderful job, so thank you very much!! <<less

In a lot of ways this is a typical "OP MC is wronged but with the help of ML face slaps everyone" kind of story. However, the characters are written very well, and the story dodges a lot of cliches that one might find annoying. For instance, the Emperor's right-hand eunuch isn't super power hungry. Antagonists that are defeated don't have the rest of their innocent family members executed or ruined alongside them. The characters that are set up to be antagonistic towards our protagonists may not be super geniuses... more>> but they aren't s*upid. Relationships between characters are nuanced, and even side characters have developed motivations. A specific example in a spoiler below:

Spoiler

The MC grew up in a household where his mother is dead and his father remarried. His stepmother suppresses him and helps scheme so her own son can inherit, the half-brother and servants are encouraged to mistreat him, and his father ignores his plight. In any other work, the half-brother would loathe the MC and plot against him, leading to the MC destroying the entire household and everyone would be executed or otherwise a miserable end. In this story, the MC doesn't actually hate his half-brother because the half-bro is a naive child who doesn't know anything else and doesn't understand the power struggle going on in the household. Their relationship isn't good, but it's not terrible and doesn't lead to a major conflict. The MC even ends up reconciling with his half-brother and stepmother and they actually deserve it. The father proves that the kind of person who would throw away his first-born son is in fact a very selfish and self-centered person who doesn't have the rest of his family's best interests in mind. Because the stepmom and half-bro have their priorities straight they act accordingly and grow as people.

I wouldn't describe this as a Gary-stu novel, but MC is oddly insightful for someone who has been confined and only experienced the outside world by reading about it. Despite his inexplicable OP-ness he's likable. The ML is also the "cold to everyone except MC" type, but he's not the overbearing type. The "will-they-won't-they" part of establishing their relationship is dragged out not because of denial of feelings but because the MC doesn't know what his feelings are. Once he figures it out it still takes them a bit to officially get together because hey, the ML was ambiguous for a while and teasing on purpose without clarifying if he actually liked him, now it's time for him to get a taste of his own medicine. The MC grows to become the ML's equal in both position of power and in their private relationship without the ML dominating him at every turn.

The Emperor Li Long is the main antagonist and probably the best written character in the whole novel. He used to be like brothers with the ML but betrayed him, but while the ML is resolved to fight back and sees him purely as a foe he doesn't hate Li Zong - he's just deeply disappointed and sad about the situation. Li Zong's actions are inexcusable, but one can't help feeling sorry for him despite knowing this. His betrayal of the ML makes it seem like he's dumb or short-sighted at first, but as the story unravels it's shown that he's not incompetent and there are reasons for his illogical actions. He's not s*upid but his emotions lead him to make wrong decisions or be manipulated by his courtiers. He has legitimate trauma from his backstory and knowing this makes his mindset and motivations understandable. Unfortunately, his circumstances are beyond his his control and his pride and paranoia prevent him from taking any control back. The MC and ML are confused about his later decisions and think he just went crazy, and Li Zong seems to be the only character whose motivations and actions remain unknown or misunderstood by them. But Li Zong walks to his end knowing exactly what's coming and finally succeeds in taking back a little bit of control for himself. He's really the most tragic character in the entire novel.

The story is typical and unrealistically biased towards the MC and ML in a lot of ways, and there are unrealistic parts in the plot that might break the immersion. But it's well-written overall, with great characters and atypical plot elements that lead up to exciting schemes, battles, and victories. If you like these kinds of historical novels and want a good story or are tired of the typical tropes I recommend this. 5/5 for an ML I don't hate and not making the emperor and stepmom shallow antagonists. <<less

Story revolves around the Two protagonists. Their past life is quite sad but all is well in their second life, given the chance to right the wrongs and was able to establish a good relationship. Never expected they would fall in love with each other but it seems the heavens really wants them together and they were able to do it naturally.

Actually, the story wouldn't make you feel bored because a lot of things are going on and the plot will keep you seek more for the chapters. There are... more>> a lot of conspiracies but overall, it wouldn't make you feel stressed out. It's actually beautifully written despite the MTL.

What lives an impact for me in this novel isn't because of the two main protagonist but actually the villain, Li Zong.

Man, I know he did a lot of awful things but it's quite sad. He could actually be a great man, a great emperor if only he was guided correctly by the people around him. He was too anxious, insecure and love deprived. It's sad. And the end, he was betrayed by the person whom he loved the most in his life. In the end, he chose to end his faith coz maybe he felt that living isn't so worth it anymore. What is life if I cannot even have a single person with me? Kinda like that. Saaaad.

Anyway, it's a HE for our protagonists. I also love the extras especially the last one but kinda disappointed coz it wasn't continued huhu, I want to see Ye Wan falling in love lmfao 🤣🤣

All in all, I highly recommend this. For those who are looking for 1on1 couple, no 3rd party, Court conspiracy, war, rebirth, regression? And also both our MC and ML are not people to be messed with. Especially the MC, he had so much growth! From a very quite MC to a very smart confident

Not going to lie, I liked this one! Although not anything new or profound, but the author takes these common tropes and utilizes it so well. Lot's of political intrigue and plot twists and turns, but damn at some point things just start clicking! I enjoyed how the author really took the time giving MC his character growth and it's shown through his own little mini arc set apart from ML who really has power. Not just him, but ML and even side characters aren't forgotten.

I do have to say,... more>> although of course the main antagonist (Li Zong) definitely wasn't a good person at all, he was a really complex character that at some point, the reader (aka me) couldn't help but feel such complicated emotions about. If anything, he reminds me terribly of Luo Binghe from SVSSS except SQQ actually chose him and here, Li Zong's teacher Han Chan actively planned out his entire life to become this way. Although I don't think he should be pardoned from his many crimes, you can't help but wish he could've at least died less aggrieved. Although if we take into account all the innocent people who died because of him, you can't help but feel conflicted about this character and in my opinion, that's what makes a character well written.

I do have to say, my favorite characters aren't even humans. It's a literal loyal wolf that MC saves, and a falcon who both have a sort of rival relationship. I loved them it's just a shame they sort of disappear after the main antagonist dies.

I MTL the rest of the chapters, they're really not too bad so give it a shot, you might like it! <<less
