So, I could ignore Wanyan Xu's very passionate love developing way too quickly for me. As he have been surrounded by dishonest people his whole life then he meets a honest person. But still...
We have Su Yi, a general who feels that he is responsible for all of his people's actions, their lifes etc. The first one was logical actually, Wanyan Xu was blackmailing him with the live of the soldiers that had been captured, it made sense. The second one was good too, this time Wanyan Xu was blackmailing him with the life of his friends. But the third one just didn't make any sense and this whole blackmail thing was becoming too repetitive and boring. Okay so this time, other people blackmail him with the life of rebels. This really didn't make any sense to me. He knew and observed that people actually had a way better life than they had with Qi. And he didn't even personally know the rebels.
So he takes the punishment and now is a s*ave. I was becoming a bit fed up with this story but if this wasn't dragged out for so long I would still probably enjoy it. Okay, I kid you not this whole thing goes on like 35 chapters. And to be honest when I remembered that this character was supposed to be a general, it didn't seem plausible. He was much like a damsel in distress.
Overall the story feels implausible, like there was this pink filter. Everything dissolved too quickly etc.
Actually, now that I think about it, Wanyan Xu's love developing so quickly really doesn't help the situation at all. It adds to that pink filter feeling.
Did Su Yi really had a choice? Not really.
I think people saw them marry and thought the situation was over, forgetting that Su Yi IS a prisoner -maybe not in Wanyan Xu's eyes, but to himself and everyone else.
he became Empress, so what? He was still a defeated general, tricked into the wedding, dealing with the guilty of starting to fall in love with the man that defeated him and conquered his kingdom.
I honestly think people do not give Su Yi enough credit as a torn character between loyalties. Wanyan Xu is a great Ruler and that's the only reason why Su Yi can even fall in love with him because HE KNOWS he is a better ruler than the previous emperor, but oh boi is he blind and not understanding.
He'd rather be the villain in Su Yi's eyes than trying to ease his guilty conscience. He thinks that bestowing affection and power will magically fix everything. As I read, especially the chapters before the wedding, it's clear that Wanyan Xu and Su Yi are living two different stories.
Su Yi is living his personal tragedy made of humiliation, guilt and sacrifice.
Wanyan Xu is living in a romance where he got his beloved and everything is fine.
They are not on the same page until the Conspiracy is resolved. And they have to say thank you to Wanyan Xu's child. Really, Wanyan Shou is the best character in the book. The thing is... they struggle. A lot.
Su Yi suffers a ton because of other people and his martyr mentality.
And you know what? It would have made no sense otherwise. I also struggled a lot because the reviews really worried me, but in the end it's HE, a big one at that, and a very nice read so 4 stars
