In a nutshell the uke (Su Yi) is a powerless kitten, the seme (Wanyan Xu) is a lovestruck puppy, and Wanyan Xu's son from a dead consort (Wanyan Shuo) is adorable.

Su Yi is a 'great' general of Qi and Wanyan Xu is an emperor of the enemy kingdom. Because the Qi Emperor is s*upid, Su Yi gets defeated in war and becomes Wanyan Xu's war prisoner. Su Yi does not succumb to torture and never surrenders, which makes Wanyan Xu more obsessed with him until the emperor finally snaps... more>> and r*pes him (the descriptions in Chapter 12 are so ??? 😂). From hate to lust to love, Wanyan Xu's feelings for Su Yi changes really abruptly that in just a few chapters he turns from this cold, cruel leader/general into a muddle-headed emperor wrapped around Su Yi's finger. Not that the latter would even try to use this power except for asking him to take good care of the Qi people. Like seriously. For 50 chapters all the guy does is try to commit su*cide, lament about the ruin of the Qi dynasty, grit his teeth whenever Wanyan Xu sexually harasses him, and... uh... get forced into doing things because everyone knows he's such a softie who couldn't bear to see hostages die.

Su Yi's character makes sense, a bit. I mean, in other novels the ukes are just really pathetic damsels-in-distress, but in War Prisoner Su Yi's an honorable guy (read: pushover) who doesn't want to live anymore because Qi no longer exists (the royal family; the peasants still live, and much more happily under Wanyan Xu's rule to boot) and because Wanyan Xu's antics have humiliated him to the core. So if he can save somebody else's life then he'd easily accept any kind of suffering.

Anyway, what irks me is that there's no kind of character development whatsoever aside from the hate-to-love thing that people pass off as 'that's development!' these days. Honestly I dropped this story after chapter 60+ and just skipped chapters to learn some stuff. The romance doesn't work for me, the characters are passable (although I really do dislike how Wanyan Xu was written), and the only thing I like is Wanyan Shuo. And also those really funny (embarrassingly cringe-worthy) descriptions in Chapter 12. I expected more from this novel (because it's rated 4+ and all), but was disappointed over the lack of political and military focus despite the 'military' and 'smart male lead' tags. Instead we get the usual melodramatic junk food. But then again, if you compare this to other BL Chinese novels...

If somebody wants politics, military, war, fighting, plots, mind battles, character development, more smut, and more interesting characters, then I'd suggest Captive Prince. <<less

First half was amazing! Second half was a tragedy (no, not the genre. I mean the story itself).

MC was an extremely amazing character. Prideful, intelligent and had strong willpower. He was even a great general! After being tortured in various ways he still retained his sanity! Really powerful~

.... Then he became a stereotypical damsel in distress with the IQ of a fish. -sigh-

I appreciate a general who's soft on the inside, but this guy is just ??? Hey, dude, isn't he a GENERAL?? He's probably seen people drop like flies,... more>> killed, helped strategize against enemies, they even stated how amazing he was as a general... So, how the hell did he end up making so many emotional and illogical decisions?

They really nerfed the MC to make room for tragedy. (Tho the real tragedy is how the story progressed from there)

20 something chapters of melodramatic crap that could've been solved within a single chapter if MC just opened his damn mouth. (you know when you expect a "ha I knew your plans all along!" scene and the bad guy is humiliated??? That doesn't happen here, sorry. It gets more disappointing after the problems resolved)

Spoiler

That goddamn bit*h who put him through hell was about to get her punishment, and he!!!stopped!!!!!IT!!!!!

She planned to cripple him for life and kill him off, with no remorse, and he just lets her go!

And the people around treat it as a good thing. She even walked away coldly and someone remarked that she's actually feeling grateful on the inside??

(╯°Д°)╯︵ / (.□.) she should choke on that gratitude and die!

[collapse]

ML was also really disappointing. He even let MC suffer??? What kind of male lead are you????? Is the crown on your head made of tr*sh paper????? Where's the all powerful king who can easily subdue his subjects??

In the end, it was entertaining but disapponting. <<less

So, I could ignore Wanyan Xu's very passionate love developing way too quickly for me. As he have been surrounded by dishonest people his whole life then he meets a honest person. But still...

We have Su Yi, a general who feels that he is responsible for all of his people's actions, their lifes etc. The first one was logical actually, Wanyan Xu was blackmailing him with the live of the soldiers that had been captured, it made sense. The second one was good too, this time Wanyan Xu was blackmailing him with the life of his friends. But the third one just didn't make any sense and this whole blackmail thing was becoming too repetitive and boring. Okay so this time, other people blackmail him with the life of rebels. This really didn't make any sense to me. He knew and observed that people actually had a way better life than they had with Qi. And he didn't even personally know the rebels.

So he takes the punishment and now is a s*ave. I was becoming a bit fed up with this story but if this wasn't dragged out for so long I would still probably enjoy it. Okay, I kid you not this whole thing goes on like 35 chapters. And to be honest when I remembered that this character was supposed to be a general, it didn't seem plausible. He was much like a damsel in distress.

Overall the story feels implausible, like there was this pink filter. Everything dissolved too quickly etc.

Actually, now that I think about it, Wanyan Xu's love developing so quickly really doesn't help the situation at all. It adds to that pink filter feeling.

Rating: 3.75 stars rounded up

The summary peeked my interest, but the “torture” and “rape” tag put me off this story for a long time. I eventually picked it up because I was in the mood for a historical setting. Truthfully, the rating should be lower, but this novel hit several of my meng points so I gave it a higher rating for personal enjoyment level. The two extras at the end of the novel was especially good imo.

The MC, Su Yi, did suffer through a lot of torture. It was... more>> to the point where I was wondering what kind of superhuman he must be to still be functioning after all that. But I think the author forgot to account for how battered the MC should be after the tortures he went through, instead focusing on his endurance and stalwartness. The author also glossed over the details of the tortures, which I am immensely grateful for, because I don’t like reading about that kind of stuff, especially when it’s happening to a good character. I might’ve DNF’ed the novel if the torture scenes were too graphic, but I persisted and things took a turn for the better after a dozen chapters.

Addressing the “rape” tag. There were only two instances in the entire novel where s*x was described in detail.

Spoiler

In the first scene (around chapter 12) the ML forces the MC to perform oral s*x on him. This was the turning point where the ML started seeing the alluring charms of the MC and the novel switched onto the romance track. Although I cringed throughout, I did find the ML’s lust for the MC to be realistic. It wasn’t love that fueled him to r*pe the MC the first time (but I’ll get to the “love” part later). The second time s*x happens is after the ML starts pursuing the MC in earnest and I would call the scene dubious consent. There were undertones of blackmail and “Is this r*pe? Is this not? It’s actually r*pe, right? Right.” Except the ML was very sweet and super attentive throughout the act and after, striking all my meng points, so I gave it a pass.

[collapse]

I’m a sucker for dub-con in BL, but only if the gong is in love with and sweet to the shou. Also, the reluctance of the shou heightens the tension of the scene for me. Thumbs up for a sweet dub-con scene. [Yes, I am very aware that this is still r*pe in real life; so don’t pelt me with rotten vegetables. I know the line between fantasy and reality.]

The love of the ML for the MC was progressing realistically at first, from admiration for the MC’s integrity and endurance, to gradual interest in his physical body, before sliding into romantic inclinations. But once the ML realized he was falling for the MC it went from 0 to 110 (out of a scale of 100) and you’re left reeling a bit from the whiplash. The ML likes the MC for treating him as an equal and being honest with him, something that the ML lacked growing up as a crown prince, but his devotion to MC was way too deep in way too short a time. I think there needed to be either more time in between or one more big event happening to really push the ML to that level of devotion. Conversely, the MC’s feelings were more gradual. He starts with admiration for the ML’s capabilities as a ruler and softens over time from the ML’s doting and increasing gentleness.

One thing that I absolutely must give this novel credit for is the female cast. For a BL story there are quite a few reoccurring female characters with decent and impactful roles. (To be fair, my standards for female characters are pretty low when it comes to BL stories.) But I really like how 3D the antagonistic female character is.

Spoiler

Her name is Zi Yan. For someone with the status of a maid I think she carries herself with a noble air. She has legitimate reasons for disliking the MC. During the war, the MC killed her brother, and now her emperor, the ML is starting to favor the MC, and she’s afraid that the MC will mislead her emperor because the MC is so loyal to his former country. She also doesn’t blindly hate on the MC. She is capable of acknowledging his good traits and even expresses admiration to the MC. She has always been straightforward in her intentions towards the MC, to the level of announcing it point blank to his face. (At the time the MC even welcomes it, because he was looking for a way to die. He couldn’t su*cide for fear of the ML taking it out on the people of his country, so he wanted to borrow her blade to kill himself, so to speak.) Later she sees how deeply in love her emperor is and repents, trying to help the MC restore his glory instead. When her past treachery comes to light, some people might complain that she got off too lightly. I personally don’t have much of an opinion on how she should be punished, but since things turned out okay, I don’t think she deserves to die.

[collapse]
(Although the MC really is a big softy. Makes one wonder how he lasted so long as a general in war.)

And while we’re on the topic, the MC is too much of a bleeding heart. Like seriously! I tend to like softhearted characters, but he’s a god damn general. That fought in a bloody war. I can understand caring for the men in his army (since he fought alongside them) and the common people of his country, but
Spoiler

did he have to put himself on the line for a bunch of scholars that he didn’t even personally know? And they (the scholars) also knowingly committed treason. It would be well within the emperor’s (ML) right to execute them. MC standing up for the common people was because they’re innocent to political affairs and warfare, and therefore do not deserve to be treated unfairly just because their country is annexed by another, but the scholars knew what they were doing when they plotted a revolt and should therefore take responsibility for their actions.

[collapse]

So much angst could’ve been prevented if the MC would just stop shouldering everything. I look at his bleeding heart and I’m like “Boy, sthap it. Think about your own welfare sometimes.”

While I’m complaining I should probably mention
Spoiler

that broken leg and the healing method. First off, I’m not too clear on how the leg was broken or even what kind of injury it was. They said his knee (knees?) was ravaged, but afterwards it sounded like one of his femur or maybe tibia was broken. And then the injury was healed with magic ointment that causes excruciating pain during the absorption process. (-_-) Boy, you can’t fix broken bones with just cream, even if it has unicorn poop and fairy sparkles in it. (Okay, maybe that could work...) But you gotta reset the bone first! Like, was it just cracked? Yeah, I didn’t understand that part, but the technicalities weren’t the point, the leg injury was brought into the story purely for the angst factor. And then later it was to demonstrate the ML and MC’s love for each other during the healing process.

[collapse]

Now it’s time for me to sthap, because this review is getting way too long. But one last honorable mention for Wanyan Shou (the ML’s young son from the deceased crown princess when ML was not yet the emperor). He’s a devious silver-tongued devil, but he knows right from wrong so I really enjoy his character.

This review is also available on my blog: vanillamusenovels. wordpress. com along with my thoughts on other ongoing projects. Unless I've finished reading a novel or it pissed me off so much that I DNF'ed it, I don't think it's fair for me to affect its rating on NU. <<less

This novel was the first Chinese BL that I read. Fortunately, because if I were more experienced, I don't know how I would react. As it was, I loved it wholeheartedly. There are many things about it that might make you wince or smile awkwardly. It is old and dated. But there is pure, raw, sincere, naive, passionate energy about it. The emotions were real. When it was time to cry, I was crying my eyes out. When it was time fir sweetness, I was grinning from ear to ear.... more>> The MC will forever remain one of my favourite characters. The ML was dislikeable at first but then he never gave up on the MC, and it really made me love him. <<less

Man, I never read a book on NU with such controversial reviews.

I think the truth is in the middle?

It's a very good story with a lot of flaws, but not as unforgiving as some people make them to be.

Is Su Yi the smartest character ever? Hell no.
Did Su Yi really had a choice? Not really.
I think people saw them marry and thought the situation was over, forgetting that Su Yi IS a prisoner -maybe not in Wanyan Xu's eyes, but to himself and everyone else.
he became Empress,... more>> so what? He was still a defeated general, tricked into the wedding, dealing with the guilty of starting to fall in love with the man that defeated him and conquered his kingdom.
I honestly think people do not give Su Yi enough credit as a torn character between loyalties.

Wanyan Xu is a great Ruler and that's the only reason why Su Yi can even fall in love with him because HE KNOWS he is a better ruler than the previous emperor, but oh boi is he blind and not understanding.
He'd rather be the villain in Su Yi's eyes than trying to ease his guilty conscience. He thinks that bestowing affection and power will magically fix everything.

As I read, especially the chapters before the wedding, it's clear that Wanyan Xu and Su Yi are living two different stories.
Su Yi is living his personal tragedy made of humiliation, guilt and sacrifice.
Wanyan Xu is living in a romance where he got his beloved and everything is fine.
They are not on the same page until the Conspiracy is resolved.

And they have to say thank you to Wanyan Xu's child. Really, Wanyan Shou is the best character in the book.

The thing is... they struggle. A lot.
Su Yi suffers a ton because of other people and his martyr mentality.
And you know what? It would have made no sense otherwise.

I also struggled a lot because the reviews really worried me, but in the end it's HE, a big one at that, and a very nice read so 4 stars <<less

This novel is a standard prisoner r*pe/imprisonment BL novel of a captured enemy general and an emperor. The story, characters, and writing is pretty decent, which makes for an easy read.

As usual, the MC is a "great" general with outstanding character, but turns into a whiny useless guy that's just there as the object of ML's affection. ML, as usual, is a OP love sick and posessive ruler who's logic flies out the window when they see MC.

Okay even 1 star is too much. I really hate this, indeed I was read a few chapters but I already was sick of this. It's story about two men. One of them is rapist, another one his victim of violence, tortures and s*xual abuse, I guess. If you haven't masochistic attraction, just after this words you realize that read, this, isn't good idea. ML's "Love" won't be explained at all, just without reason, I think it's simply ses*xual attraction. MC was humiliated many times, but he somehow falling in... more>> love -Stockholm Syndrome, yeah. I even don't want to discuss the plot and setting because it's romantic novel, but it's doesn't about love. And no one can convince me that this is normal. <<less

The story is nothing incredible or special. Nothing that deserves great admiration, but the translation was very well done. For this translation I need to congratulate since it can be seen that it was done with a lot of dedication.

As for the story, the narrative arrests you but the amount of cliffhangers makes it all very tiring. There are a few chapters with events and information that add nothing to the story. And that disappoints the reader.

Spoiler

Wanyan Xu goes from hatred and contempt to love and admiration very fast and this seems very artificial.

And it is serious that after conspiring against Su Yi causing him to be torturing to the point of breaking one of his legs and being hated and despised, the author still made us read excerpts in which shows the attitude Zi Yan as being commendable only because she confessed and helped show the truth? There is nothing to be applauded about. She just noticed that her plan was not going as she expected and decided to change her attitude.

This is so far my most favorite novel.

Both main characters are very smart and very strong. I usually complain about other novels that the main characters are too predictable and too cliche, but not in War Prisoner. The other side characters too are very individual, it’s very hard to separate here the good and evil, as they all have their own motives and feelings, and that I found so refreshing an unusual. Quite a bit of angst but definitely worth a try! (*I keep rereading this novel every once in... more>> a while*) <<less

This book was written in 2006! In 2006, folks. I bet some of its readers were not even born yet then. Judging it by comparing it with the recent danmei is like putting a cell phone from 2006 next to the modern smartphones and critisizing it for not being as good. This story was the foundation that allowed many more sophisticated, intricate stories to exist.

What I loved about it is exactly how pure, naive, passionate and over the top it is. I cried rivers when reading it. I hated the... more>> MC for being the s*upid martyr. I hated the ML for taking what he wants shamelessly. I loved the MC for his strength, his kindness and his purity. I loved the ML for sticking to his feelings not matter what and for doing everything he could when necessary. I even liked the silly kid.

Oh, so much drama, so many emotions! It makes me feel good every time I remember what a rollercoaster it was. This book made me feel really happy. Without it, I don't know if I would be reading danmei. Without it, I'm sure, danmei we read now would be different. <<less

Gave this a higher rating because it doesn't deserve the low ones. From the reviews I went in expecting MC to be a stubborn idiot about the new ruler of the country, but his character development is actually fine???

I guess you really can't trust ratings sometimes.... What, did you expect MC to immediately roll over bad concede everything? He isn't blind about the horrible previous emperor and was already accepting the ML's reign less than halfway through the book... I really don't get the reviews saying otherwise =.=

Other than that,... more>> I've a conclusion that ML seems to have been attracted to MC (from his music playing and war capabilities) before they even met in person. It will explain how he ended up falling for MC so quick.

The story itself is decent. And does make sense for the misunderstandings to happen, because both parties have little trust in each other to begin with despite their physical and emotional attraction.

It's a good read with a satisfactory ending. Try it with lesser high expectations and maybe you'll like it. <<less

I love, love this novel and the translation + footnotes

Imagine, if u r the army's general and got defeated by a neighboring hostile kingdom.. Mongols. The Emporer tortured and r*ped you, and then shamed you by bringing you back to your country and crowning you as the Empress. Not only it will wound your pride as a man, but also as a General. No wonder, death is preferable.. But then, even this option is taken away by the bloody Emperor.

This is just the intro 🤭

The ML is smart, compassionate and... more>> visionary. The MC is a proud man, direct in his speech (this endears him to both the Emperor & Crown Prince), and very loyal to his king & people.

The first part of the novel, is very fast paced, easily to chew story line and a bit fluffy as u follow the Emperor's journey of failing in love w Su Su.

Then, when u reached the 2nd arc (the scholar's betrayal), the knives stabbed your heart repeated, non stop #tissuesneeded

Fast, sweet, painfuuuuuul, and then, u will have your giggle moments.

I love all the supporting cast esp the super indulged and smart Crown Prince.

And the strong female characters.. The 4 handmaiden, Empress Dowager, the concubines and even Su Su old neighbours. They are brave, smart and will speak up, even in those dire times.

And, and, I so adore the 2nd Prince.. His attitude yeah.

If you are looking for a straightforward, fast pace bl, on an emotional roller coster ride, I highly recommend War Prisoners. <<less

I gave this book 3 stars cause of the writing style and translation, both were pretty great however

I can't stand this book

Even after rereading multiple times the end still makes me so upset like

... more>> The only times I'm happy when reading are the times that su yi is rejecting him because Wanyan xu really doesn't deserve anything but cold bitter rejection

Wanyan xu tortured him (fine that's normal for war prisoners we can let that slide), then s*xual assault then r*pe then blackmail then forcefully trying to make su yi, a freaking General and an honourable man who did everything for his country a male empress who'd probably be insulted as vixen that betrayed his country in the record books

Then he stopped him from sacrificing himself which by the way is his choice and uses all kinds of despicable method to mentally torture him into agreeing to be his empress

I think the author must be a sad*st and Wanyan xu is their favourite or something because if not the story would have progressed with su yi healing himself, biding his time and escaping from that monster

Maybe reviving great qi or even just living in seclusion

Anything is better than being forced to stay with the person who destroyed your country and broke you

And then proceeding to f*cking falling in love with them ugh talk about Stockholm syndrome. I mean su yi is supposed to be a mighty General who defeated WX father and all but all he does after being hurt time and time again by WX is to try to kill himself twice then just fall in love with him?????

I cannot

This novel is like one of the bl novels that I cannot and will not understand the authors logic in making it a HE

It's obviously supposed to be a tragedy

Especially for that monster Wanyan xu <<less

First of all I am just gonna say that I have an intense hatred for the MC. Like really. I have never ever hated an MC as much as I hate this disgusting su yi.

Is this MC supposed to be an outstanding general really? Cause he is the dumbest mf on earth and such a damsel in distress oh my god. I wanted to dig a hole in his brain and find if his brain actually has something or it's all just air inside?

At one point I really wanted the... more>> ML to just kill the MC and be done with it.

The novel starts off pretty well. I was extremely invested in the novel for 60+ chapters. It was well paced and I enjoyed it. The ML sudden love for MC was really weird and unfathomable but whatever. So this is actually a good novel.

But the MC ruined literally everything.
Spoiler

The MC is blindly loyal to his country whose ruler was fatuous and morally corrupt. This annoyed me so much like dude even the common people support the enemy (ML) and are happy after he conquered your lands? What the hell are you holding a grudge for? He lacked the ability to adapt and critically think.

[collapse]

My biggest problem with this novel was

Spoiler

He pretends to 'betray' the ML making it seem like he wanted to rebel against the ML, just to save the unworthy lives of the brain-dead so called 'scholars' who were the actual rebels. Like really? You have a new family now and you want to cause such heartache of your family and a husband who loves you so much just to save those people who wanted to cause harm to your family? You are going to cause so much misery to yourself and to them for whose sake? If I could, I would personally go torture the MC to death. The MC honestly deserves every bad thing that happened to him afterwards.

[collapse]

So the MC is an absolute dumbhead and I can't see his proclaimed smartness or wit at all. To me he is just a brain-dead rotten idiot who wants to be a kind Mary Sue.

If MC is supposed to be soft hearted and kind, then I would rather there be no more kind ppl on earth.

I would have given the book 5 stars if the ML had just decided to kill the MC afterall.

Regarding the ML, I disliked him in the first few chapters, but now I just pity for falling in love with such a person as MC.

My most favourite person is the crown prince. Wonderful character. And he is actually smart and quick witted as a child. I loved him.

Overall I would recommend to read it. The angst really caused my tears to fall. It was hard not to feel emotional. <<less

Translations were great, but story was boring. It was predictable and focused on one big issue for the entire 90+ chapters. Barely any love scenes, one half r*pe at beginng, one **** during middle and another in the extra2 at end. Rest is jst the emperor puppy dog love towards Su by trying to treat him right after he tortured him in the first few chapyers. Su completely deflects it, it got annoying and repetitive. I would have given up on Su a long time ago with his attitude, brownie... more>> points to the emperor for his patience and devotion.

I was disappointed that this great general at the beginning of the story was so weak. He either was getting tortured, healing doing nothing, trying to kill himself, getting blackmailed by villains, allowing to be tortured again, partially crippled, or super sick, basically had no backbone to really fight. His only fierceness is the will to die for all 90 chapters... I understand he lost and feels crap for losing his kingdom. But he already knew it was not doing well. After WYX took over, he brought him over and showed him how well he is treating the ppl he conquered. But Su is so dense, he refuse to accept even when he acknowledgs the fact in his head.

Read this is you want a dragged out story with almost no smut, but a HE at the very end. <<less

Loved it.

... which is not enough for a review ahah XD. War Prisoner takes on a somewhat cruel and sad and a bit depressing undertone at first, which slowly warms up to lotsa fluff.

There are a few things that I didn't agree on, like how the ML started pursuing the MC for real, that took me into a huge emotional rollercoaster.

If emotional rollercoasters are your cup of tea, then give this one a read.

MC spends most of the story suffering, and ML transitions from being unnecessarily cruel, to unnecessarily weak far too weirdly.

I’m giving this novel bonus points for the ending, the strong female characters, and clarity in plot.

Otherwise, the blackmail, manipulation, and s*xual assault was handled without finesse and unrealistically. 2.5/5 Stars
