"You said I should go... But with you here... where else do you expect me to be?"

Amazing. Very amazing. Still trying to recover from this since last month.

At first, I was hesitant about reading the novel since it was extremely short compared to the rest of the novels I've read so far. Funnily enough, those 27 chapters were long and torturous, enough to prickle my heart with thousands of needles. This novel is just a whole 27 chapters of holy f*cking shit. It was written so nicely, and you can... more>> see how the characters have developed all throughout the novel. Even the little things were enough to make you feel miserable

like how Shen Liangsheng just stands outside his door after they broke up.

The ending is 10/10. I feel like it is a good ending for them, and it is also a Happy Ending that is realistic and achievable. I believe the CP is also happy with their ending. <<less

LIES LIES. It's a bittersweet ending, it made me want to cry so bad.

Still, was a pretty good read. The first half is mostly smut and romance, the second half gets much more plot-heavy and that's when it roped me in IMO. That was a good ride, kind of sad it's over now.

The scenery outside the yard was nothing out of the ordinary: a rather narrow mile-long hut’ong with residential units on either side. Strangely, he did not see a single neighbour, only the dazzling sunlight raining down on the street silently yet so intensely that he had to look away.

It was then that Ch’in Ching knew he was dreaming, but even though it was a dream, he had to find the man. Just as he came to this realization, he glimpsed a familiar figure in front of him – it was none other than Shen Liangsheng. The scenery outside the yard was nothing out of the ordinary: a rather narrow mile-long hut’ong with residential units on either side. Strangely, he did not see a single neighbour, only the dazzling sunlight raining down on the street silently yet so intensely that he had to look away

It was then that Ch’in Ching knew he was dreaming, but even though it was a dream, he had to find the man. Just as he came to this realization, he glimpsed a familiar figure in front of him – it was none other than Shen Liangsheng. Ch’in Ching hurried after the man and called his name, but Shen Liangsheng did not answer and only kept pushing forward

The mile-long hut’ong seemed to stretch on forever in the dream. He watched as the figure that appeared pale white under the blaring light slipped farther and farther away, but even when it became smaller than a needle point, he could still see it

Ch’in Ching was, however, on pins and needles, afraid that the silhouette would vanish in the blink of an eye. Therefore, he dashed after it. He ran until his shoes flew off, until he was panting so hard he could no longer call his name

At last, Shen Liangsheng seemed to have noticed someone had been following him and stopped to look. He frowned when he saw Ch’in Ching and began shooing him away like a mean old man would a stray cat or dog. “Go back! Don’t follow me! Quick, go back!

Ch’in Ching was in such a hurry he could not cry, but now that Shen Liangsheng was chasing him away, he broke out in tears and began sobbing like a pitiful child trying to win back the adult’s love

Unable to bear this, Shen Liangsheng turned and took a few steps towards the man, but he did not close the distance. He looked at the crying man, at a loss of what to do

“Shen Liangsheng...” Not getting any response from the man, Ch’in Ching realized the tears were of no use and began calling the man’s name between sobs. He wanted to say something else but didn’t know exactly what. In the end, after choking on his sobs for a while, he blurted out, “I love you, Shen Liangsheng.

It was a strange yet fantastical drea

When he spoke the words “I love you, ” the dream seemed to come to a complete standstill. The two men stood frozen in place. Then, they both burst out in laughter“Come here.

He reached out a hand while he began walking towards him

With every step, they seemed to become one year younger so that, when they stood face to face, what each man saw was a youthful version of the other

Strangely yet fantastically, they had not only become younger, but their attire had changed, too. They looked like characters out of a wu-hsia story. Ch’in Ching was wearing the long blue robe of a Confucian student. Shen Liangsheng, on the other hand, was in elaborate dress, an ink-coloured robe embroidered with silver clouds along the hem, but he appeared more like a vicious deity than an elegant noble because of a cold complexion that carried not wrath but death

However, Ch’in Ching was not afraid, nor did he find their attire bizarre. Rather, he leaned in mischievously as he always had and reached for the man’s hand

Shen Liangsheng did not seem surprised, either, and took Ch’in Ching’s hand before leading him forward along the path

Under the blinding summer sun, they walked side by side until the end of this mile, and they would keep going

Whence they had come by

Till the end of time..

--

For those who already finished, let me make you cry again.

Rating: 4.5/5- I definitely cried again but it’s always good to clean out your tear ducts.

I read this directly after reading the prequel, Living to Suffer, and whilst it added to the effect of the whole story, you can still enjoy this book without having read it.

It’s a wonderful read but I really felt pained in my heart during these 27 chapters. It’s painful because of how realistic their lives were and what China and its people went through during those strife filled years. Also the entire time since chapter... more>> 3 I kept waiting for the shoe drop coz it always felt like they were destined to be unhappy.

I was relieved that the unhappiness wasn’t prolonged and they got the change to redeem their past lives and discover love the way it should be. Through their ups and downs and until their very ends.

I greatly enjoyed both novels, but I probably won’t ever re-read this one again due to how painful the experience was.

I also enjoyed both lead’s characters in this book, but whether I became attached or not, is yet to be known as I’m unsure myself. Although in an unexpected turn of events, I actually enjoyed the character depiction more in LTS, although they had their meritorious characters in this book too.

SPOILER ALERT!

Spoiler

I liked the ending of this novel as well. Although the title seems unfitting for the ending for it felt like even death could not part them- which is my complete idea of what love really is. Call me a romantic or unrealistic or whatever, but if one truly falls in love with their soulmate; death and rebirth won’t keep you from one another. I believe in that wholeheartedly.

Overall this sequel and it’s prequel are must reads and it’s worth the pain at the end of the day. Again, beautifully written and descriptive and poetic storytelling that wrenches the heart and dampens your eyes. <<less

brilliant! Loved it through and through.

First of all the translation was amazing! I felt like I'm reading an actual published novel, and not a fan-translated project. The translators did a great job at translating this piece.

About the story. It was great!

How could I describe... engaging, captivating, touching deep into your soul a feeling you didn't even know you could have. As some reviews have said, you don't need to read "live to suffer" to understand, but I recommend it if you want to take a closer look at our protagonists, their feelings, and how their past and fate intertwine in such a touching way. deep characters, lived feelings and a little about a time so close and at the same time so distant that our ancestors experienced... in short, without... more>> regrets. <<less

Wow, now this I love!!! I gave the first book a one start, bc it just felt flat. The characters were boring and there’s barely any storyline, but this sequel was amazing!!! I love the realism of their relationship and the growth of their love for one another. So glad I gave it a chance.

This is the first novel I actually read of my own accord and completed. Usually I had to read books assigned by my school and stuff but I never actually read them.

I came to this novel after watching the drama and downloaded the pdf for this novel. The story was so beautiful and interesting. The romance felt so real. I will totally reread this again one day.
