Yu Ziyou and Zhong Wan served different masters.

They had once been the closest of souls, and were the bitterest of enemies.

After losing the fight for the throne, Zhong Wan brought his two young masters with him far toward the borders for the sake of survival. He relied on the little friendship that existed between him and Yu Ziyou when they were young. He borrowed some of his personal belongings while also dropping various hints around which made everyone think that there was something intimate going on between them.

Given the Yu Clan’s powerful authoritative presence in the imperial court, this appearance of a close tie allowed Zhong Wan to live a much better life than before. As such, the stories he cooked up began to carry more and more weight.

As rumors of their lovely romance spread a thousand miles into the horizon, Yu Ziyou, who was located in the distant capital city, eventually caught wind of his deeply moving and epic love affair. In a trance, Yu Ziyou, who had been completely brainwashed for seven years, believed in them. He guessed something special really did happen between them back in those years…

Great novel. It feels unique in many ways. If you are looking for a historical romance with political intrigue, this is one of the best ones. It is funny, heartwarming, has a couple that are truly devoted to each other, and interesting side characters. 5 Stars

A very enjoyable journey! Low-angst, very comedic, pretty unique personalities:

  • MC is a rascal, but a highly intelligent one. He's fairly complex, likes to hide his real thoughts, likes to pretend to be frivolous, but knows how to scheme like the best of them.
  • ML is a tsundere, but also extremely rule-abiding. Likes to appear cruel/violent, but has the softest heart inside; always thinking for MC's sake. Has the most morals.
  • Both MC and ML are pretty OP
  • Expect: somewhat slice-of-life-ish, with comedy and light court "politics"
  • Not: sweeping epic plotlines with deeply interwoven storylines
Both MC and ML have made a lot of hidden sacrifices for each other and for what they believed in. The author liked to unveil them one by one and make "<insert character>'s organs hurt after hearing <some truth>." This... more>> got a bit repetitive after awhile though, as the author never develops or changes the character's reactions after every reveal so it becomes extremely predictable.

Other reviews have critiqued this author as being very meandering, flip-flopping back and forth, not really getting readers invested in the intrigue.
  • I agree: this is because both MC and ML hide their real goals, real actions, etc. So much and for so long that it's easy for readers to lose interest because who knows if it matters; readers are extremely reliant on the author to tell them the reason it's significant X time later (losing all the tension in the process)
  • Very much like a slice-of-life; every insignificant (and significant) thing gets mixed together and it's difficult to get into the rhythm of 'an epic plotline' (which doesn't quite exist)
THAT SAID, I found the story entertaining enough (made me laugh out loud quite a bit) to get me past the lack of tension or goals.

I especially enjoyed the banter and relationship development between MC and ML, which is a highlight in the story.

More like a 4.5 but rounded up for a great translation. I liked it but felt there was something missing to make it a truly great story. Overall, the good definitely outweighs the bad.

The best part is probably the ML. It's rare that ML outshines the MC cause authors usually use ML as only a love interest but here, ML stands on his own as a character. Warning for those that are sensitive to mental health issues and the treatment of said issue! ML clearly has a mental disorder and... more>> half the time it is played for humor so there's that. I don't really mind it cause of the time and setting/context of the story but if you care about that just a heads up.

As a contrast, MC has a physical illness. His character is all over the place so it's harder to grasp him. The comedy is mainly due to MC and ML being on entirely different dimensions. MC says zig and ML hears zag, that kind of stuff. And how ML's "logic" arrives at zag is funny.

It does start to drag a bit with the palace intrigue stuff. Right off the bat, you get the politics and players involved but nothing really happens until the end. There are some reveals that happens along the way and minor events but no game-changing stuff to move the plot along. The past story line and flashbacks aren't really well written or used properly. <<less

Loved it! I’m usually not one for politics or plot heavy palace intrigue but this story did so well to balance the humorous couple moments with the politics and intrigues that it didn’t feel heavy. It was such a smooth read, I read it all in one go.

The MC and ML are hilarious, the mystery and politics placed just right, not overwhelming or dragging down the pace of the novel. I can’t handle all the heavy stuff without a bit of humour and this novel did it just right. Not... more>> too little that it burdens your heart, not too much that it destroys the plot and mystery or makes it dumb.

Truly one of the better novels I’ve read so far! <<less
