This is one of the best adventure novels with a realistic setting I've seen until now on NU.

  • The translation is good and has a decent speed.
  • The characters are funny and interact in a realistic way.
  • No kindhearted or OP MC, but he also isn't a Jerk.
  • No Harem
  • very smart way of world building, the author manages to express strength and background without wall of text exposition

  • the Chapters are a bit short and the chapter titles aren't good.... yeah, thats the only "problem" I could find until now. Oh and that I can't enslave the translator and editor to keep translating it 24/7

The author clearly has similar tastes to me.

It's basically Guts from Berserk currently in a plot development that is similar to Goblin Slayer.

The main character wields a sword that is too big for normal men. He pays keen attention to detail in his doings that others clearly do not.

The ideas are not particularly original as of yet and the inspirations for the work are very clear. But I love both of the influences that I have seen to death, so I don't really see a reason to not read this... more>> also. <<less

Always nice to see a down to earth MC, they are too rare, unfortunately. Both the MC and the Lapis seem likable, the way he thinks is very relatable, trying to work with new people, but worrying about awkward and uncomfortable situations. He tries to act professional and is justifiably annoyed when others fail to do the same. Haven't seen much of Lapis (who I'm guessing is going to be the FL) yet, but so far she appears to be an overall good and kind person, but not to the... more>> point of being a complete pushover, she can recognize the absurdity of a situation tries to take a tactful approach to it.

The translation is very well done, looking forward to seeing where this novel is going. <<less

So bad. This is the first slice of life I've read to cause me so much pyschological pain. Normally, when reading slice of life novels, I get the urge to roll around on my bed due to all the fluff. Now this one.... my god, author really wants me to hate FL huh. ... more>>

FL had so many approaches to get Mc's affection yet she chooses to dump a truck load of guilt over him despite him having saved her life many times. If she had just confessed or asked seriously, Im sure MC would have accepted given how much of a niceball he is.

Dropped at ch25. I had really high hopes for this series, as the beginning premise was really, really intriguing, along with all of the events that ended up happening along the way through the first half of Arc 1. Loren's background was quite good, and the depiction of his sadness about what happened was great as well, but that only lasted for a few chapters. It's like the writer suddenly decided that having an emotional connection to Loren was too much of a bother and then shifted focus onto Lapis... more>> and essentially turned this story into a woman manipulating a man, both financially and emotionally, to be with her for as long as possible, for HER own benefit, without even taking into consideration on what Loren thinks about all of this.

But then at the very end, when Lapis shows her true colors, and Loren, who just goes along with this sh*t, completely lost me. Not to mention, even though the beginning started nice, after thinking about things for a bit, Loren and Lapis, along with every character that was introduced in Arc 1, are all literally one-dimensional characters that are only defined by the tropes that are assigned to them.

Loren, the broke and super strong mercenary that literally gets walked all over by Lapis.

Lapis, the manipulative and deceiving woman who wants to tie Loren to her through financial domination because he's nice to her. Also is very strong and intelligent, and honestly has no need for Loren at all, based on inferences from what's been given thus far, but wants to keep him to herself because "reasons" that I don't buy for a second.

Sarfe's party who were all literal token trope characters that had no redeeming qualities to them.

Ritz's groupe who were all literal token trope characters that were plagiarized straight from Goblin Slayer, and written very badly in the process.

If the first Arc turned me off this much already, I shudder to think how it's going to turn out after that. If you like manipulative women and doormat men, then this story is for you.

Now to continue my quest for trying to find a story where a male MC doesn't take sh*t from anyone and actually feels like an individual (not an easy quest through the slog of sh*tty JP wn and ln, don't even touch CH wn and ln anymore). <<less

I rate this 4 star for the story and the world building. But I stop reading this bcause even though thr author want to make story with 2 main character, it develop into 1 stupid and gulible but strong main and 1 weak but smart and kind of bitch. The strong but stupid is of course the male, and as some people already review its really not very good character.

He is a very high status mercenary but stupid. In many story this already become the side character, its not exiting... more>> and interesting enough. I think the only people who would really enjoy this is either a woman or a beta male, because goddamn this is really a story of side character people with people on the sidelines not caring about the male protagonist. Remember he is a very known mercenary! The female protagonist is intereting and devious by keeping the male and using him as a lackey, its not really shown but yeah the male is her slave.

Maybe what I said is a little overkill but that all true, look at the title, the male is poor, but he is very good, how can he still become poor? Ask the female protagonists. That is how the author want to make this story going.

I rate this 4 because its a good and interesting novel for some people and I rate this objectively, but personally I hate this story waste 3 hour of my time. <<less

It's really good and worth a read, the story progresses in a timely manner and lays out it's groundwork for reveals if you're attentive and think a bit. I would recommend going in with a view to enjoy the premise for what it is.

I like this story. It not like other Fantasy story where the hero is OP and his only goal is Harem. It just a dude who had bad luck and try to survive.

MC has battle exp fight human not monsters, but does exp help him a lot in his new life fighting monster.

I know from chapter 3 that the thief, mage and the other male char would die lol.

In short its a mix Goblin slayer + Berserk. Not much blood and rape stuff. I happens but not so graphic

Reads pretty good even for no English mother tongus.

Chapter are decent length. To bad there only 14c :X would have liked more.. <<less

Promising start, likeable main characters, great translators.

Wholly recommended for fantasy novel fans that are tired of the usual OP protagonist.

The story is quite interesting, albeit underdeveloped. We have MC who is an ex-mercenary, who apparently survived after most of his comrades died in battle. However, he keeps saying later on that his group was disbanded, which is a bit confusing. What is refreshing here is that MC behaves like an adult for once. This is not the type of novel where everything is always fine and dandy. There is a lot of backstabbing, most people during every mission so far die and MC doesn't think twice about killing people... more>> who are his enemies or teach a lesson to annoying people who bug him. What is also refreshing is that no harem, no lolis and not tsunderes here. I hope it stays without tsunderes and lolis...

On the other hand, MC's overall behavior does not correspond to his supposed character. He was an experienced mercenary, but he doesn't know anything. He doesn't make decisions and have no clue how to live by himself - he doesn't even know what country he is in. Supposedly it's because he was just a soldier and didn't need to know anything but just follow orders. I don't really buy that. You should pick things up by just living, so it doesn't make sense in many cases where he lacks the knowledge. Also, he is not proactive at all. There is this pattern so far that keeps repeating itself: he is being dragged in to do a mission by the girl he is with, the mission goes horribly wrong, he uses his "berserk mode" to fight and saves them, ends up unconscious because of it and in the hospital. It's an annoying pattern and I hope the author will break it soon.

I like the chemistry between the girl and the MC. They are both pragmatic with a realistic outlook on things and are actually working well together. She wants to keep him by her side, but it doesn't seem to be malicious and she seems to actually like him. She helps him quite a bit: she gives him equipment that cost much more for a reduced price. So I don't really get the people who view her as evil and manipulative. It's not like she even hides anything she does from the MC and he can return the debt and leave if he really wants to. It's just because the storytelling is not that great, their situation is not as believable as it could be. Another thing is about this girl - the only thing we know about her is that she is a powerful demon with a seemingly large amount of resources and she can procure rare equipment easily. So she should have some background, but we are never told what it is so far.

There is also this trend of not asking for information. For example, in the second arc, it is the most obvious how they have poor decision-making abilities. They found this girl in the forest, but no one seems to even ask how this girl ended up near their town. Also, the girl absorbs live energy and basically kills people by draining them within one day by just being near them. However, she was at the guild for several days and no one noticed? And after noticing that unexplained stuff is happening they chose to just go right ahead to their destination where it was obvious that the best choice of action would be coming back with the information and getting reinforcements.

Overall other than a few things that I can overlook, I actually enjoy the novel. There hasn't been anything that irritates me too much. They only thing is that repeated pattern of ever-increasing debt, failed quests, and ending up in the hospital at the end of each arc. <<less

After reading the reviews here, I keep convicing myself that it'll be better latter in the chapter every time I wanted to drop this novel, but I was so horribly wrong I should've stopped reading this novel a long time ago, there's nothing that I like in this novel at all and I regret the time I spent reading this.

While wading through all the slice of life cheat isekai crap that infests this site you occassionaly come across a hidden gem among JP novels such as this one. That 'strong to stronger' tag is also something I'm seeing for the first time and it really begins to show by the end of the 2nd volume and the beginning of the 3rd as the MC starts to gain new strength at a slow yet comfortable pace in some unexpected ways. And speaking of the MC, he's not the brightest when... more>> it comes to worldly knowledge as a result of his circumstances but he most certainly isn't dense either and shows surprising wit when it comes to his interactions with the other characters who themselves are much more than just 2D cardboard cutouts used to fill in space. Overall I'm really satisfied with this read and anticipate more in the future. <<less

Honestly this is a fun and good to read story. With a main character that might be more than people think of him, and a combat prowess beyond normal adventurers and meeting his party member Lapis who he frequently gets more indebted to her (literally). And the duo does not hold back sometimes with their similar troublesome when bored habits and similarities and funny differences make it a great duo of main characters.... more>>

To add to the hilarity he gets fused with the astral body of a loli character and gets her powers of an artificial Lich/Undead King such as an ability that scares people to an extent when need be and a passive presence protection that doesn't bat an eye towards low rank monsters and Lapis being a Demon kin with awesome OP magic blasts and Loren being with her to restrain her when need be.

Seriously these 2 don't always see eye to eye as when Loren doesn't depend on her she is disappointed as she wants him to stay with her by increasing his debt and Loren having to restrain her from using magics and causing chaos with her natural abilities.

And a one sided (at least until later I guess?) crush on Loren from Lapis that might change and he isn't entirely dense to it when she asks him to meet her parents in a recent chapter so

Klaus is also a bad character until he realises his errors and to never mess with either of this tightly knitted duo. But we still know his harem is tired of his womanising actions and Loren and Lapis are not caring at all until Loren gets it from Ange a bit.

And srly it was really nice to see Lapis and Shayna react when Loren is shot with a flirty joke from Feim lol.

All in all I have a reason for loving

this if you dont like it just move onto the next one.
