It's ok, nothing bad but also nothing special. There is a lot of dialogue and text that doesn't really do anything for story and MC, although reasonably smart, seems to be floormat. He could have avoided a lot of trouble by just speaking up. I can't really see mercenary experience showing up.

This is kind of cheap plot trick to make MC seem better, by having some smart inner dialogue with MC about how things should be done. But if he doesn't try to correct the situation and just goes with... more>> it, that makes MC equally s*upid.

Story overall just feels a bit dragged out and has plot holes. I can't say it's bad, but it's not great either. <<less

It was already said in a review but I don't mind saying it again. The protagonist is tr*sh. I know that it's a japanese web novel so a male protagonist with a spine ability to form an opinion and make a decision and the ability to say no to a female is not something that I should hope for but this is a bit too much for my tastes. I don't mind the novel I wouldn't read nearly 200 chapters if I did but the protagonist just gets worse. All... more>> the female characters that matter are stronger than him smarter than him and better than him at everything they do and he is basically just their bit*h even if they say or do something that anyone with at least some degree of selfrespect would hate he just takes it in the ass and goes on. Same with another party that gets introduced at some point where some elf bit*h constantly beats and berates her "boyfriend" and I am supposed to find it funny or cute. The more I read the more it feels like a newest addition to the current marvel universe. I can't recommend it to anyone who hates these types of male and female characters. The translation is good. <<less

3 stars.

Not a bad novel. Tho the MC is suppose to be someone who was till recently a famous very powerful mercenary. Yet despite living as a mercenary killing people and being strong he is a wimp. He fulfills the complete stereotype of a Japanese MC. It honestly gets annoying as the personality doesn't fit up with his background at all. Read up to ch 32 so far and debating on dropping it because of that.

This is very good. Interesting characters, a very likable, normal and relatable MC (this is hard to come by in japanese novels) and the pacing is smooth. The events flow naturally and the writing of the novel is nice.

The author clearly has similar tastes to me.

It's basically Guts from Berserk currently in a plot development that is similar to Goblin Slayer.

The main character wields a sword that is too big for normal men. He pays keen attention to detail in his doings that others clearly do not.

The ideas are not particularly original as of yet and the inspirations for the work are very clear. But I love both of the influences that I have seen to death, so I don't really see a reason to not read this... more>> also. <<less

Always nice to see a down to earth MC, they are too rare, unfortunately. Both the MC and the Lapis seem likable, the way he thinks is very relatable, trying to work with new people, but worrying about awkward and uncomfortable situations. He tries to act professional and is justifiably annoyed when others fail to do the same. Haven't seen much of Lapis (who I'm guessing is going to be the FL) yet, but so far she appears to be an overall good and kind person, but not to the... more>> point of being a complete pushover, she can recognize the absurdity of a situation tries to take a tactful approach to it.

The translation is very well done, looking forward to seeing where this novel is going. <<less

The story takes a rather known type of novel, the dark fantasy, and goes into the now typical "Adventures are idiots, Goblin are horrible" trope. Yet, it is a fun read since the main character not only is very grounded, he is also an veteran in combat, but a rookie to an Adventurer's lifestyle, so it does give a rather fun view of everything.

And then, as we keep marching into what looks a standard trope adventure, the story starts to take a different turn. Suddenly, mystery takes a bigger role,... more>> adventuring feels dangerous and as we get information of forgotten civilization, sleeping demon lords and the constant danger to the life of commonfolk, the story always keeps into our almost crestfallen mercenary and our so ever happy priestess trying to make a living.

It doesnt go into a harem cliche, nor the "How MC is so OP" cliche. It feels grounded, the danger feels real and we see our main cast go over difficulties using their head, their skills and a bunch of good and bad luck.

Its not a new type of story, but it has a likeable cast, a great story and unexpected (even surprising) outcomes.
(Didnt really like the way the narrative starts, being way to repetitive, but it gets better as the story goes on) <<less

It's fun reading it, and I love it very much!

The characters, to me, don't really seem one-dimensional. Rather, they're portrayed with enough characteristics for people to follow through. Considering this is an adventure and fantasy novel, there will be loads of characters for the main ones to meet along the way. So, of course, they will appear dull or cliche. Only then do they seem "real" or developed as the story goes.

And as this is a "Strange Adventure of a Broke Mercenary", I think it's understandable that Loren, the... more>> main character, to have that as an ongoing theme. Maybe to others, but to me, the novel is not annoyingly pointing that out. In fact it's often there as a reminder of Loren's adventure, coming out at the start and end of each story arcs.

Also think about it, this novel is an adventuretype, so there wouldn't be emotional or tragic scenes. So, Loren's quick mood shift from his mercenaries' deaths is reasonable, considering he was a mercenary himself. He's experienced death as an everyday occurrence. It's only then that his "luck has ran out".

Moving on, the interaction between the two main characters feel natural especially in that fantasy setting. I know it may seem bias since I do adore Lapis and Loren together, but Lapis isn't clearly robbing Loren for more debt. She could have asked for more interest with his skills and experience. Hell, the guy even noticed. He might be dense but he won't overlook how weirdly promising the guidelines for his debt is.

Spoiler

Chapter 49
In addition to that, Lapis wasn't going to put interest on it, either.

Loren thought that if she wanted to make his debt larger, she should put interest on it, but Lapis didn't seem to be concerned about that at all.

"I'm not trying to make money off of you, anyway."

Chapter 97
He was beginning to think that the debt was to give him a reason to be with Lapis.

If it wasn't, it wouldn't explain why Lapis happily looked for valuables from the destroyed villages and the bandit camp they had destroyed and tried to take them.

[collapse]

Moreover, this novel's setting seems realistically portrayed, and that's an oxymoron in itself since it's fantasy. What I mean is how the world building relies on some general aspects of fantasy with logical reasons. It's a dark fantasy that doesn't rely on power of friendship or sh*t like that basically. Rather, the survival of our main characters relies on knowledge and luck (or bad luck for their ventures).

Spoiler

Chapter 62
"That's... According to one research, slimes are creatures that appear in places where mana is built up or disturbed, so I guess a slime spawned there."

Lapis told Loren that if enough magic was used in situations such as battles, the mana in the area becomes disturbed momentarily.

And when water, blood, and corpses are added to that disturbance, slimes are born.

Loren had experienced such a battle, but in general, slimes were creatures that ate anything they found that could be consumed.

[collapse]

Again, it might have been my bias, but I haven't seen a male MC in a fantasy, adventure setting who doesn't go full territorial. When it comes to Lapis, he often asks for her say and not completely do things on his own. (Even when he kept a secret from her, they eventually talked it out)

Spoiler

Chapter 12
Ritz looked at Loren, asking if he was okay with her decision. But Loren thought that it was fair for Lapis to choose, as she was the subject of the conditions, and wasn't going to say otherwise.

Reminder, to them, Loren and Lapis pretended to be a couple at that time.

Chapter 33
"I think it's okay to do what you think is right."

"You fine with that?"

Loren confirmed with Lapis, even though she had just given him the go ahead.

"I don't mind. Is there a reason for me to stop you?"

Lapis put her hand on Loren's forehead.

As he felt a ticklish sensation when she moved it around like she was patting him on the head, Loren looked at her.

"All I'm asking you is to come with me when I want to go do something, and let me accompany you when you want to go do something. I have no intention of forcing you to do anything you know?"

"That's another... "

"So go ahead, do what you want to do."

Chapter 52
Lapis stopped Loren, who had started to move towards the quarrel, without looking away from the menu, and told him.

"I don't mind you doing it, but don't kill them, okay? You don't want to go to prison before we even start the job, don't you?"

"Don't worry, I know. I'll go easy on them."

"It's disturbing other customers, so go shut them up quickly."

Chapter 77
"You already know everything."

Loren sighed that she already knew everything, but Lapis told him with a serious look on her face.

"Guessing the truth and asking for confirmation are two different things."

Chapter 130
"I haven't slept with her. And she's not mine, either... "

[collapse]

Lastly, yeah, there's a romance tag, but clearly, the two don't seem to be the type to be affectionate or lovey-dovey. They're the practical-kind of people. There are rare glimpses that it feels mellowed down to just their normal interactions with each other.

Spoiler

Chapter 41
"Loren?"

"Don't say things like that. Whatever you are, right now you're my partner, right?"

For a second after being told that, Lapis had a blank expression, looking like she didn't understand what Loren had just said to her. After a moment, she avoided his gaze and slowly turned her back to him.

"W-well, you know. Umm, I guess I'm your partner. Well, more like your client. Or you debtor."

"I don't care whichever you are. Don't keep things to yourself and talk to me."

At Loren's aggressive and blunt words, Lapis looked back at him with a slightly embarrassed look on her face.

"You're right. Yes, I'll do that a bit more."

[collapse]

All in all, if you're looking for a good story with a levelheaded, experienced main character and his adventure, reasoning that he's broke (even though he could have cut ties with Lapis at any given time with his skills), then here! The world building is simple as the story goes on that it doesn't feel like an exposition dump. The pacing doesn't feel too rushed out and every adventure arc is entertaining to read! <<less

I feel bad that I can't give it more then 5 star, it's been a long time since I read such a good novel, the hero is strong but at the same time not OP which keeps it interesting, it has actual story and they always face new things, the best I think is it's not a harem I wished for so long to find a pure one on one relationship and this has it, the story is written in a way that it makes sense, it's not all about... more>> fighting they use there brain to get through difficult situations, truly fantastic story, thanks really well made story <<less

I think I've read about enough of this to give it a review. Basically the author took Guts from Berserk (I'm surprised he was even able to get an LN adaptation, with how much of a ripoff his character design is) and mixed him with your standard fantasy LN fare. Including his attitude, obviously. If you've been around light novels for a while, nothing here will be particularly novel or compelling.

Long story short, this isn't bad--it's entertaining enough--but it is shallow. And also relatively nonsensical.

He constantly refers to... more>> how he was a mercenary but all of the references are almost filler. They exist to make it clear that he "was a mercenary, " but nothing more. It adds very little substantial to the story. If anything, it allows the author to simply skip character development, which isn't a surprising goal considering they seem apt to skip anything that requires any actual effort. The character knows things that make him easy to use as a focus in a combat-focused story, and the mercenary part just seems to be the explanation. He could have been a past experienced adventurer, a bounty hunter, soldier, whatever you want.

He isn't a past adventurer because an easy way to add silly tension and whatnot to these type of works is to make the main character start from the bottom and go up. You have people underestimating him, and him showing off how much of a cool muscleman he is, etc. All of the references to his past as a mercenary are basically "well, if I were to imagine the life of a mercenary, given 5 minutes of research, I assume this is how it would be." It doesn't paint his feelings in any depth, his background is horribly vague, and his emotions are left a total vague mess.

It doesn't really end there with the shallow world or character building, of course. The world's technology level is left vague. Its current way of life is also vague. Apparently they have toilets, but no one mentions how their plumbing is done and how the sewers were made, how advanced it is, etc. I guess this can be fixed later, but it's very hard to get absorbed or invested in this LN on any deep level.

Finally, per the author's characterization, the main character is supposed to be surprisingly well learned (iirc), despite his background... but... uh... yeah. That's very inconsistently portrayed.

    • His first outing and him going along with it, despite obvious misgivings... that can be forgiven, considering that he was desperate and, apparently very sleep deprived. It's one of the first and probably last times you ever actually see him mention his mental state with regards to his comrades dying.
    • But... the rest of the continuation suffers horribly from "alright we've struck gold/at least silver" blues.
        • Like why does he even keep going along with the female lead, even though he's supposedly a bit sharper than he lets on? It should be plainly obvious that she's
          Spoiler

          being at least bit deceptive

          [collapse]
. Maybe he just likes her as much as she might or might not like him?
            • But why's he a tsundere about it? There's no point. This is supposed to be a mature work. His first party

literally has its members having s*x before they soon die

              [collapse]
              .
        • But the story must go on, right? The first light novel as a starter was probably around 4 stars, but everything and everyone suffers from severe degradation from that point out. It's like the author tried to make a mature work but is failing terribly at it.
        • Their second outing has them
          Spoiler

choosing to go out and collect herbs because he lost his sword and decided it would be safer... only to have him melee battle a bunch of wolves trivially, and the girl stating that he could make some money off of their pelts... why even go pick herbs? You didn't need the weapon. And why was picking herbs even considered safer, given that you could have encountered these wolves either way?? And the girl already told you that she can use magic and she's shown that she's plenty strong in melee as well. Why is she even bothering keeping up this charade, and why does he go along with it?

          [collapse]
    • I wanted to make this a subpoint, but this deserves its own bullet... another misgiving is also that I don't understand why he's so shy about s*x or the other gender in this work. Frankly for a work that's trying to target the audiences it is, him being so squeamish about this, is absolutely crazy. Especially considering he's a mercenary. Him and his comrades should have visited a brothel at least a few times, yet the author just quite obviously strays away from that topic and he's pretty much apparently immune to all male urges at every turn. Despite having enough hormones, testosterone, and steroid infused muscles to be probably one of (if not the) the physically strongest humans in the entire world. This doesn't make sense. It's not like the author is even lowering the adult content rating of this by any meaningful measure, considering what his first party does. What's the point of all of this tiptoeing around sexuality? It's just a nuisance in what's supposed to be a somewhat mature novel.
Anyway, read this like you're eating Berserk-flavored cotton candy set in a monster-filled fantasy world filled with adventurers. That's basically it. <<less

edit (as of chapter 160) : "This has become a kind of odd story, don't you think?" Yes, it has. Still reading and enjoying it, but I liked it better when it was about Lapis, Loren, their mysterious pasts and possible future. Hopefully the story will get back to that, if even the author is noticing the detour...

Original (thru chapter 134) : 5 stars doesn't mean I think this is "Moby Dick". What it does mean is that I've enjoyed this so much that read 100 chapters in about 1... more>> day, and am still anxious to see what comes next. Oh, and that I have laughed out loud (no, really) three or four times. I love dry wit, and some descriptions are as dry as a mouthful of cinnamon. I love the dynamic between the two leads. It reminds my a bit of Steed and Emma Peel of "The Avengers" TV series (yes, I'm that old).

I jumped into the novel *after* the first dungeon. I had been following the manga adaptation, which was probably the best way through that initial, rather slow arc, because it's definitely the worst one. I found that it ended in chapter 24, so I've read from there. What made me keep bother looking for the novel was Lapis' personality, and the dynamic between the two leads... and I'm glad I did.

Incidentally, I'm rather sad to see these characters so misunderstood in some of the reviews. The MMC is a low-rent Guts (from "Berserk!") if he had refused to be traumatized and decided not to seek revenge. He's not beta, he's just got a rather narrow view of life. He stands immovable for his principles, always ready to (rather casually) risk his life for them. Does that really sound beta? He just doesn't know or care about other things -- like pleasure, getting rich, or ranking up -- very much. FMC, on the other hand, is mostly along for the ride, but she does know how the world works, recognizes what a diamond-in-the-rough she's found in MMC, and had no intention of letting him get away. Not, to be honest, that he's trying very hard to escape... <<less

First of all this is perfectly translated (shout out to Kaoto great work).

The novel is slower then other ones but is very good. The two MC are well written and interesting. Even though they are extremely strong up until chap 112 you can't say they are op since there is always something stronger then them that they are facing. There is no Isekai or harem trope so if you are looking for that, look elsewhere.

If you are looking for a more serious fantasy LN I can't recommend it enough. It's... more>> really good and worth the read. <<less

I'm immersed in reading this

the theme is not isekai'ed MC, but rather is just fantasythe MC is just a mercenary (for now, he like, evolved further from normal human),

he is muscle man, tbh, so the brain is not his forte, so he is paired with someone which use brain better, and the pair is rather cute and funny, ,

so yeah, path to OP MC is still opened, you can expect that

Well, I quite enjoy the read!
As my forebearer said, the story has a touch of darkness, it's fast paced and eventful. There (so far) are no useless chapters with info dump or endless descriptions (f.e. of cooking or technology). It's also nice that the time spent travelling is described to some extend (salted with nice character interactions making it fun to read), instead of getting a time skip.
The MC is no typical airhaid plot-protected hero-type japanese MC, he is quite strong and can (to an extend) read the... more>> mood. (He is styled to be a mix of Goblin Slayer (he's about talking just as much if only slightly more) and Guts (looking and fighting like a weaker version).)
We also have a stong heroine who is quite OP herself and crafty (!) to boot and she defenitly knows what she wants and how to get it.
The premises of the first arc is a goblin hunt while the party and the MC seriously underestimate the supposedly weak goblins. We also see an expedition into ancient ruins that differntly from the usual ancient ruins in other LN don't contain loads of traps but are rather styled like our current research / military installations (though with a touch fantasy and sci-fi) - that was defenitly quite refreshing.
So far there is no character "development" for this we likely will have to look into the next arc (s). The reader is shown a bit of the past and quite a bit of the character of each of the main cast though.

Now there are of course con's though (many of those were already mentioned in the other reviews) :
- The characters are quite uniqe and likable, but our MC's lack of talking or asking for information (during / after important situations) is too forced by the author. The reader gets to know all the mistakes the other characters are making, as the MC thinks about it, but because the story requires these s*upid actions, the MC doesn't act on his thoughts (speaks them out alod / asks important questions/...) but remains quiet. While the author wants to display the MC as a quite type, thoughtful type, who thinks talking to strong headed people is a pain and asking indepth questions about is insensitive, it regretfully rather makes the MC look like a push over and s*upid.
- As it's important for the world building, the MC is apparently ignorant about many things and needs to ask about them. This could've been done better.
- The heroine knows quite well how to get the MC to (continue) helping her. The MC is supposed to act a bit like a tsundere and grudgingly accept helping the heroine (out of kindness). Still the reader currently gets more the impression that the MC is a pushover and is easily controlled.
- Of course the MC is required to remain broke. But is he therefore really required to be completely ignorant / s*upid regarding money matters?! (The MC fails his quest to hunt goblins - as he has no longer any goblin ears to show. Still there would have been quite many ways to still get some recognition and payment for his work done. Yet the MC simpy accepts the results / the word of the heroine and subsequently getting no money instead of trying to talk it over again / negotiating himself - which would be the normal reaction especially of anyone who has no money to even pay for his next meal!) <<less

While wading through all the slice of life cheat isekai crap that infests this site you occassionaly come across a hidden gem among JP novels such as this one. That 'strong to stronger' tag is also something I'm seeing for the first time and it really begins to show by the end of the 2nd volume and the beginning of the 3rd as the MC starts to gain new strength at a slow yet comfortable pace in some unexpected ways. And speaking of the MC, he's not the brightest when... more>> it comes to worldly knowledge as a result of his circumstances but he most certainly isn't dense either and shows surprising wit when it comes to his interactions with the other characters who themselves are much more than just 2D cardboard cutouts used to fill in space. Overall I'm really satisfied with this read and anticipate more in the future. <<less

Honestly this is a fun and good to read story. With a main character that might be more than people think of him, and a combat prowess beyond normal adventurers and meeting his party member Lapis who he frequently gets more indebted to her (literally). And the duo does not hold back sometimes with their similar troublesome when bored habits and similarities and funny differences make it a great duo of main characters.... more>>
Spoiler

To add to the hilarity he gets fused with the astral body of a loli character and gets her powers of an artificial Lich/Undead King such as an ability that scares people to an extent when need be and a passive presence protection that doesn't bat an eye towards low rank monsters and Lapis being a Demon kin with awesome OP magic blasts and Loren being with her to restrain her when need be.

Seriously these 2 don't always see eye to eye as when Loren doesn't depend on her she is disappointed as she wants him to stay with her by increasing his debt and Loren having to restrain her from using magics and causing chaos with her natural abilities.

And a one sided (at least until later I guess?) crush on Loren from Lapis that might change and he isn't entirely dense to it when she asks him to meet her parents in a recent chapter so

Klaus is also a bad character until he realises his errors and to never mess with either of this tightly knitted duo. But we still know his harem is tired of his womanising actions and Loren and Lapis are not caring at all until Loren gets it from Ange a bit.

And srly it was really nice to see Lapis and Shayna react when Loren is shot with a flirty joke from Feim lol.

All in all I have a reason for loving

this if you dont like it just move onto the next one.

Guts from berserk got tired of his author who keeps going on hiatus so he changed named to Loren and started his work for a diffrent writer.

It is an ok read to be honest. Actually this is the type of novels I want to read. It is not in first person narrative like so many other japanese novels. And there are adventures. Lots of adventures not some bullshiet slice of life where they need to find rice, must make miso, must have hotspring over and over and over and over... more>> again again again..........

Pace feels nice. I am staying at 4 star

Story: He meets a demon lady, who will soon scheme to entrap him to her. Well Loren is a nice guy so he won't mind it if he ever finds out. First arc, it was ok I guess. Loren meets dumb people who think they are hot stuffs when infact they are inexperienced and soon gets the death flag. So far we don't know where this will go in this early game, he just aims to earn money. And I am entertained, I like the pace. I like the mysteries behind the spawning machines and ruins. Though novel lacks some background meat.

But it is entertaining. There are some clichés but its ok. This japanese novel is more of a fun read compared to the other japanese novels out there. I don't feel its a refreshing new of a way of writing in their japanese circle of novels, but its not first person narrative that they all use and I am not bored and at same time intrigued by the mysteries behind the spawning machine, though I hope its not some lame plot. <<less

Promising start, likeable main characters, great translators.

Wholly recommended for fantasy novel fans that are tired of the usual OP protagonist.

This is a pretty awesome novel.

It's actually on a semi-mature level, except in the romance department (that part is like reading a typical shounen). This novel is something that doesn't read like something found on Sesame Street, like most Japanese LNs/WNs do, so the ret*rd factor is almost non-existent, and I don't feel nauseous while/after reading it (well, maybe vol 5 made me nauseous, but not for that reason).

The ecchi is done in a mature way, instead of at a level that denotes the writer is a boy going through... more>> puberty, writing while rubbing one out (well, maybe that's reflected in the hero dude). It's still a little ret*rded that everyone blushes at the drop of a hat for the tiniest little thing - I mean, the characters are supposed to be grown adults, not middle schoolers.

The MC is OP, but not so much that he stays completely undamaged, which is something I like. It keeps the story from being a total, boring fairy tale.

The only thing that I really don't like atm, is the overused seven sins theme from the bible (the most entertaining, comical, and copied piece of literature ever written in history). What a waste, but it does keep the story action packed and lively. Lots of humor there too, without the s*upid overused, immature, and boring cliches.

I give this one full marks. <<less
