I wished this novel was better than what it actually is. I was in love with the concept of this novel, 300+ chapters about a someone transmigrating into a cultivation world and working hard to take care of his family? Sign. me. up.

I ended up MTL-ing because of how interested I was in with where this story would go only to be disappointed with the execution. One of the things I didn't like was the lack of descriptions or explanation about the world and the magic systems. This is one... more>> of the main reasons why I'm so drawn into cultivation stories because of how in depth the descriptions and world could be. This story's way of words and descriptions of events is very... simple in comparison to other novels of this genre.

I came into this expecting a wholesome cultivation development story but what I found myself reading majority of the time was instead just various side characters' POV reactions about what the MC has done rather than being in the POV of what the MC is doing. At this point, I feel like can tell you more about the side characters than about the actual main characters. I've never seen an author even push their own MC to the back seat like this one has. Having read the other reviews, I'm afraid this issue would only get worse.

The relationship between the MC and Xu Mu'an felt very ill/ underdeveloped. The first set of chapters I enjoyed! The MC and ML are very likeable but then the more you read ironically, the less you're going to read about them in their POV. I feel like I could count the interactions between Xu Mu'an and Xiao Jingting with 2 hands. Additionally, whatever interactions they finally have are extremely short lived.

The MC's 2nd son, XiaoFan is given much more attention, more development and word count than the actual MC and ML has I swear. Don't get me started on XiaoDong, the eldest son, he's just like a trailing ghost who's there to make jokes about XiaoFan.

I don't even know how I would rate this to be honest, maybe a 2.5 if I could.

Stealing words from Compass96, it's not bad, but very mediocre.

I would only recommend this if you're looking for a easy/ light read and don't hold any high expectations. It's a good time waster, I've definitely felt like I wasted my time on this one.

Otherwise, if you're looking for a good read that's in the similar vein to this, I highly recommend ''I have Medicine'' instead. <<less

Writing/Translation: 3/5

The translation I read is from Flying Lines. The translation is as expected, with countless small mistakes. It's much better than the MTL version though just because this is a cultivation novel with all the weird names for everything. And the translation is far more consistent with the naming. The translation is not bad but the writing is. If you've read the author's other novels before, you know what to expect and what you are getting into. It's almost like explaining only what's happening right now. There is... more>> zero exposition or introduction or any setup. It just explains exactly as it's happening and expects the readers to know who these people are, their genders, their relationships to the world and so on without explaining.

Pacing: 2.5/5

I dislike how the characters make major decisions as if they were minor ones. Big, life-changing decisions like leaving everything they knew and people close to them behind to explore a new world were made just like that and immediately in the next few sentences, they are off without even talking to the relatives they are leaving behind. No discussion, nobody trying to convince them, nobody worried for them, nothing. It feels too unreal. So the pacing is like this. It is very, very even. Big events and small events all happen at the same pace it feels like. A couple of arcs that looked important concluded rather quickly while most arcs weren't really given the care and love they deserved.

Plot: 3.7/5

I have no idea how to rate this lol. It's a simple, self-indulgent, weak to strong story but the author added all the cultivation concepts in here. The execution of the story is so bad. There were so many characters in the Xiao family that had the spotlight and then were abandoned and forgotten for so long that I kind of forgot their personalities and stuff when they came back. And then, the author added some random skills to them or just forgot about their original skills, except the cooking skills of the youngest son. Argh, there were just so many characters who have their own special physiques that the author just randomly chose one to give some focus but not the rest. Like the thunder immortal tree and fruit for Lei Xuan but nothing for the ML's fire yang body? There is also Xiao Fan, he was pretty good at refining weapons at the beginning, but this never got expanded upon later. He just dropped out of the story after he married the guy. Arghhh, the execution is all over the place and so messy. I have so many complaints. Like that huge chunk of the story after the MC ascended to the Immortal Realm, it suddenly became a Long Jingtian-centric story. So annoying. And and and, what happened to the second brother's side of the family? After the MC left the city to explore the world, they got forgotten for a long time, then came back into the spotlight for a bit, then were completely forgotten until the end. So... they were just left in the lower realm while the rest of the Xiao family ascended? Alsooo, what about all the grandkids?? They got mentioned but never expanded upon. So the MC and his kids' generation ascended but their kids' kids were left alone in the lower realm?? I cannot fathom the characters' personalities or what is important to them anymore. Are the grandkids not important enough for any consideration from the main characters? I didn't think the MC or his family were that kind of people but there was zero mention of the grandkids. So it felt like the character settings got broken -.- none of the characters were really good people either, if you think about it carefully sigh.

Romance: 3/5

The romance is so meh for me. In the beginning, when they were just farming to make money, there was some small interest. But when they started cultivating in earnest, the romance just fell off. When they reached the Immortal Realm, it was gone completely. It feels like Long Jingtian became the MC instead of our MC.

Setting/Worldbuilding: 3/5

The world is pretty big and there is a lot of stuff. But we never explore anything properly so there isn't much sense of wonder in exploration or worldbuilding. There also isn't any fantastical and beautiful vivid sceneries normal to cultivation novels, sadly.

Characters: 4/5

The main characters are just meh. When the cast of characters was smaller, they had some depth. But the further it goes, the blander and shorter the page time they have. They feel more two-dimensional than before.

Personal Enjoyment: 2.5/5

I quite liked Transmigrating to the Ancient Times with Lu's Convenience by the same author! I liked how the business management was handled, it was not too fast, detailed, interesting and gave constant new ideas so it wasn't repetitive. I also adored one of the kid character. So I read the first few chapters of this and it seemed the same setup too lol. There are kids at the beggining too and they have more personality than other similar stories.

Sadly, I long ago wanted to stop reading. But I spent so freaking long collecting experience points and SP to unlock all the chapters in Flying Lines that weren't available outside that I couldn't bear to not reach those unlocked chapters (The last 200+ chapters. I long wanted to stop at like 300 ish sigh). I found the beginning just okay and even felt some interest in the whole wood and earth potential thing. I was hoping for some cool things to use to farm and make more money, like that earthworm and other demonic beasts. But we shifted focus away from that and went full on cultivating everything. Also, everything happened too quickly. There was almost no impact of each achievement. All decisions were made without any discussion or consideration of the fact that they would be leaving people with whom they had worked closely behind. I have so many complaints that I'm too overwhelmed to write them all. lol. There is such little detail on how they executed anything. How did they get the shop locations, where exactly is it? What does the surrounding area look like? How did they even know about the place? I would like some help imagining the story, please. Also, there were some missing chapters in the translation. So that was annoying.

My favourite parts were only the first part until they left the first city and the last chapter, lol. They were more grounded and straightforward, so the clumsy execution had less of an impact and the story was tighter. We had more intimacy with all the related characters too. Plus, most of my favourite tropes were there. Family, poor to rich and business management. The last chapter, we had like one last scene about the character's real feelings again.

5 stars for my satisfaction. In spite of Mc's overwhelming op-ness, I quite enjoyed the novel and all the secondary characters. It wasn't overly dramatic, just filled with alot of black bellied antics and some humorous situations. I understand why some people might find it boring, as MC merely moves from one stage of cultivation to the next while dragging his family and slapping some antagonists along the way and there wasn't many tense, agonizing scenes, but I found the power building calming and interesting enough to fill up my... more>> time in between finding more novels to read. <<less

This novel suited my tastes well. There is face slapping, farming, cultivation elements, fluff, etc. There might not be those who don't enjoy cultivation novels but to those who prefer them, you can also give this a go.

So far, so good for me.

A lot happens, and there's many time skips. It starts off as one of those transmigrated into ancient times to do x novels, then quickly turns into a cultivation novel.

The pacing is sometimes slow, sometimes fast. I didn't read carefully one time and missed the sentence that said thirty years later so there was a lot of confusion going on. This happened more than once.

Regarding MC and ML, they're sweet but their relationship was really placed on the backburner after a while. ML is just kinda there.

You'll meet MC's family... more>> and his family's family and ML's family and his family's family and their families and everyone else. It's a full house, it's cute. A bit repetitive, but if you like these kinds of novels, you'll like this one too. <<less

I really liked it, it had a lot of elements I really want to see in bl more. The MC was really family oriented, he had a lively character, and a good sense of self. There were some drawbacks tho, given that it was over 500 years we meet a lot of characters which is fine, its expected but some characters that are supposed to be important are forgotten. The MC had other grandchildren besides the dragon and Phoenix but they never got mentioned when he ascended. His contract beast,... more>> the scorpion and the queen bees. His father in law, chen xu's father, his second brother and his nephew. Even his father. But all in all it was amazing and I wish it was longer <<less

As other reviewed said much about this novel, take it or leave it.

Ye Yiluo old novel, that actually caught my eyes before I knew her and is decent compared to her other old novel.

What I like is still adventure part of cultivation. I am a sucker for those types of stories so I managed to finish this novel.

Recommended for those who wants cultivation type of story.

This is my first Chinese novel, so it'll always have a special place in my heart. That said, the story quickly falls off a cliff, changing genre, and later changing viewpoint character. Upon re-read, I'm reminded on how great Xu Muan was and how quickly he's dropped from the story. Along with the brother's family. My dislike Xiaofan is reawaken.
Spoiler

This is not to say that he's a bad character. He's an awesome foil to his more pessimistic brother. It's that when he's the main character, and he drives the story for a while, his simple nature really drags everything down to a slog. He's super lucky and he acts like a sheltered 6 year old. Which is super weird when everyone around him is talking about dating, marriage, and s*x.

[collapse]
. It's why I dropped the story, because I remember that it essentially becomes a generalogical story with only on bright spot.

Disappointed. What happen to Xu Muan? Why was he just left out and why was there more chapters about Xiaofan and side the characters? Xiao Jingting went on adventure but most of the time he was not with Xu Muan I thought there would be more stories about the MC and ML together.

It got tiring. MC and ML are treated as secondary characters. No explicit fluff, even where it could and should be. The characters are kinda flat. They even hold hands "behind the scenes". There are interesting story lines, but it lacks excitement. Basically, 😕

Not bad but quite mediocre. Romance is rushed and unappealing. All characters feel one dimensional. MC is so goalless. He works hard but there doesn't seem to be any vision or desire behind it. This is actually what made me drop it. I can't stand it when protagonist are aimless, drifting through life without any purpose behind their actions. Translation is also quite mediocre as well. In all, a middle of the range novel.

Not sure how to rate this novel, but I will say that I'm shocked that not every villain is killed or even face-slapped. The MC is the type that knows to advance by retreating and will often spend decades to raise his strength out of sight of his overpowering enemies. Something else that is interesting about this novel are distinct cultural differences between different cultivating areas caused by ignorance, but also pressures of outside forces. (Ie the strong focus on farming in the first arc) It's also refreshing that people... more>> notice the MC's secrets for better or for worse. Additionally, coming from modern times doesn't seem to give him advantages in anything but cooking.

There are disappointments as well such as those mentioned in other reviews, but it gets spoilery at this point.

Spoiler

I don't think that the grandchildren were forgotten by the author. The world often has clans related to each other in the upper and lower realms. Each has an origin caused by family members separating. Not everyone can become strong enough to ascend, and the Xiao descendants no longer receive constant support from their ascended relatives. Additionally, most of the powers related to the MC in the lower realms needed heirs. Those few abandoned grandchildren are just right to revitalise those families. I think it's also possible that the author may have had most of them ascend sooner or later, but found a good stopping point before having to kill some of the descendants off.

I think that my biggest regret is that the secrets of the MC's body cultivation method were never fully explored. There was potential for more plot along that route. I also feel like the special trees could have had more to them, considering that the tree of life was once sentient and friends with another of the trees.

[collapse]

Overall this was a relatively nice cultivation story. Sure, it had a lot of tropes. It is also a fully developed story with a reasonable beginning and end.

Conspiracy Theory:

Spoiler

MC died for real and everything in the plot is his personal heaven.
1. Plot Armor/Wish Fulfilment would become reasonable

2. Jade Pendant really had no powers, but is how the MC can rationalise everything going so well in a cultivation setting (he even dripped blood on it before he died)

3. First thing he got waking up were things he didn't get to have before his death (male wife, children, special powers, etc)

4. He read enough cultivation novels to have this kind of world be generated from his deepest desires.

I picked this novel since I saw it has 400+ chapters this started good for me but eventually I had to drop it since author's world building irks me. Earlier chapters where MC is still in the Barbarian continent was good but eventually it got to a point that it wasn't interesting enough for me. I just don't like how MC and ML got their cultivation status/grade so close to their children that when MC raises his level I don't even appreciate it lol since I know his children would... more>> reach that same level after a few chapters. There's also too many side couples and too much time skips idk what's happening anymore. What kept me reading until chapter 400+ was Xiao Jinfeng and Mu Shuyu and wanting to see them appear again. I'm not reading this again as there are better cultivation novels out there where you sympathize MC progress better. <<less

Overall good story. So sweet, touching, and adorable

Some issues

Spoiler

Author at one point has the main cast as almost side line characters. Mu Yun x Qui Yun story become the main storyline with the annoying Xie Warren. Even Mu Yun said he had suspension about the whole drug incident but does nothing "waiting" yearsfor qui yun to come back ?_?.

I wished they had MuYun investigates Xie warren right off the bat after the Qui Yun and his grandfather incident and chased after "Qui Yun" years earlier so they can investigate together and develop feelings then get revenge and/or save the grandpa while our main cast can still get involved teach them cooking, help resolve the poison, and have some sweet moments. Sry im rewriting the story. Dunno that part was totally poorly written and boring. The author does get back to the main characters after deiving off the road for a while.

[collapse]

Spoiler

Another issue the timeline. At the beginning time skip was few months to a year. Then when it started the massive time skips things started to not make sense or forgotten about. Maybe take the 0 off 10 year 20 year 50 years. I guess I was suppose to feel those timeskip are nothing bc its a cultivation novel. But what about the side line characters then? Are we suppose to assume the grandkids kept up with their cultivation and not die off? I read the mtl so wasnt sure what happen to the grandkids, the brother family?

[collapse]

Extra needed

Spoiler

I did want more development, story, and sweet moments for the

:

  • MC brother and his family (i hope they were moved to higher planes too.)
  • xiaodong, xiaofan and xiaojin & their husbands.
  • xiaodong, xiaofan, and xiaojinn interaction with the their babies
  • MCxML with grandbabies
  • plus a wedding. They never show the kids wedding. I imagine their small only family wedding would have been touching and sweet.
  • The other half of the story, Xiaodong and Xiaofan didnt have any screen time. Even Xiaojin didnt really have much. Family dynamic at the beginning
was so good. I wish the author coninuted it in the other half of the story too.

I really love the main couple, xiaodong, xiaofan, and xiaojin. The kids other half are super cute too. <<less

The relationship growth is too quick for me. And the revelation of his identity was not that exiting. The conflict was literally easily solved with common sense.
Spoiler

youngest child got over his trauma because of a piece of steam bun. The eldest child had the most character growth since he's the one who did not trust MC the most. The wife got over his trauma in the first day MC started talking to him. Wife even let kids be alone with MC knowing his old husband would beat the crap out of them before. MC didn't even have to apologize to any of them. When the MC revealed his identity it only took six dialouge. The wife was not worried at all that a strange man has been has been pretending to be his husband and the father of his children. The conflicts is not premeditated:

He recieved a mu of high-land that gets infested with beasts but instead of selling it to the government he tries to make it work and lost a lot of money

He kept making an excuse to his ex-hoes that he ran out of money to keep them away because he doesn't want to further ruin his image when isn't it better to reject them honestly that he does not want to be with them anymore to save his image? And what image is he trying to save? Everyone knows he was a useless lusting creepy a**hole

MC earned 400 tael quick every time he goes to town but he looses them from farm shopping. He just bought seeds and a weapon for his wife. His source of income comes from the forest which is free. How is he broke every time? Is 400 tael equal to a $1? It does not compute.

His wine only take a week to make but in really wines take months to make
