The Omega Can’t Pretend to Be a Beta After Accidentally Witnessing the Major General’s Susceptible Period

Description

The top alpha, Major General Ji Cheying, disguises himself as a down-on-his-luck beta in order to carry out a secret mission. One day, when he goes out to take out the garbage, while wearing a pair of torn socks, he comes across the poor nephew of his landlord, Xie Quan, a good-looking beta who was staying in the dirty and terrible bas**ent.

The two look at each other, each feeling a little sorry for the other.

No one expected that one of these two miserable people was the prestigious Major General Ji and the other was the most powerful mecha engineer in the Empire. And to Ji Cheying’s further surprise, this beautiful beta confessed his passionate love for him!

He was torn again and again under the prudent choice to refuse the other, after all, this is a mission, not the time to talk about love.

When the mission was over and it was time to talk about love, it was Xie Quan’s turn to become baffled, “Who do you think likes you? Who confessed? I didn’t, I’m not, don’t talk nonsense.”

Ji Cheying: ???!

It was only then that Xie Quan unexpectedly realized that the Imperial Major General seemed to have mistakenly thought that he was in love with him.

A few months later, Major General Ji, who had entered his susceptible period, was violent and fierce, not able to be approached by strangers. However, his eyes were red and he was tugging at Xie Quan, his voice hoarse, “You little liar, cheating on my feelings and not taking responsibility.”

Xie Quan sighed, lifted his hair, and tore off the invisible gland patch, finally revealing the omega gland at the back of his neck, “Bite it. I’ll give you a bite.”

Ji Cheying gritted his teeth, “You’re a f*cking omega?”

True love has nothing to do with identity and gender.

This is imo a good read for those just starting to venture into the omegaverse subgenre. The pacing and story is quite good. There's just enough tension and mystery to keep you reading.

Spoiler

Although the romance takes a backseat in the middle to make way for the political intrigue, it didn't ruin the stroy for me.

[collapse]

As for our main leads, both stay true to their character from beginning to end.

Spoiler

ML is a passionate yet cautious person, who has a habit of jumping to conclusions. While MC is a genius but lacking in emotional expression. Some may say that MC is too cold to ML but I disagree. His reactions and behavior towards ML are in line with his established character. Although I did feel sorry to ML at the end, unfortunately it was the most effective and efficient way for the both of them. 😓

[collapse]
Both are not ooc at all. I guess you could say MC is a kuudere while ML is a deredere.

As for the side characters/antagonists, there's not much to say. They weren't really fleshed out that much but there was a clear motivation for their actions. They weren't evil simply for the sake of being evil.

Overall I would recommend this. The story is not too complicated and it's less than 100 chapters, good for a quick read. Translation was good as well. It's 4.5/5⭐ from me but I just round it off to 5⭐ because NU. 😅 <<less

I really liked this one and mtl'ed the whole story.

  • Likable MC with personality check
  • Likable ML with personality check
  • the way MC is often misunderstood is amusing -> a dash of comedy check
  • dog food on reasonable level check
  • realistic and lengthy process off falling in love (at least for one of them) check
  • plot that makes sense check
Well, the only thing that didn't make sense was how long it has taken them to discover each other real genders in spite of elephant sized hints.

  • enemies with brain check
I really... more>> liked that part because it was portrayed as conflict of interest and using others as tools to reach specific goal. There are too many stories with s*upid canon fodder enemies that become enemies for brain dead reasons. <<less

something about this felt... off... don't get me wrong, I liked it but... Maybe the story lacks detailing and finesse. it feels very plain. the characters are 2D and lack depth. I feel no connection or empathy for any of them. simply, it's a story that doesn't make one feel hooked.

it's definitely not memorable but enough to pass the time.

  • world building-3.7 stars. (not much was mentioned but it took a fresh concept in the ABO world IMO that I appreciate) I like to think the whole standard ABO rules that we're used to being challenged and shown here in an alternative light are exciting.
  • characters-2.8 stars. nothing about anyone was unlikable I would say but I don't feel invested or even love the main leads apart from MC's genius talents.
  • plot- 3 stars. simply because the beginning concept was very entertaining and although cliche and expected it was interesting though very short-lived. The latter half felt very rushed and lacked a certain cohesive aspect to make the story truly flow well.
  • MC's background and history are not explained AT ALL. who taught/guided the genius, who raised him in the slums, what was his life like in the slums, how he got his identity as yan bai, and what did his various feats...
  • the romance felt dry and ill leave it at that.
  • rushed plot and poor flow.
  • many times scenes seem to be cut off and the next chapter is totally a different setting.
  • the ending required more details, more stuff about the betas, the kingdom's mess.
and other stuff.

a so-so read. personally did not fit my expectations.

good idea but poor execution.

Liked it! Read it in one go without having the urge to put it aside! So, very satisfied~

I‘m not going to summarize the plot, the introduction basically says it all, just that more stuff happen later on~

What I especially liked and really didn’t expect was ... more>>
Spoiler

the whole Beta thing! I was already wondering what he was planning to do later on. I may just be s*upid, but I also never thought of it that way, that Beta are the „more evolved“ humans etc! And that Beta not being able to use the Mecha is based on the limited thinking of the Mecha maker/humans, not the user! Wow! Of course, novels settings are always different, so you can’t use this reasoning on every novel, but it just suddenly made sense haha I love these moments, where I don’t expect something and they say something really inspiring (??) that just suddenly makes click (*lightbulb*) hehe I like these small epiphany moments

o (*////▽////*) q

[collapse]

Anyways, all I like and stuff is basically already said in the other review, so I’m not going to say more! ٩ (˃̶͈̀௰˂̶͈́) و Just that I recommend giving this a try!

Oh and if anybody cares
Spoiler

there are no side CPs wuhuuu well, if you don’t count the MLs brother and MCs father thing... I wasn’t really sure what was going on between them hm in the end it was said that MLs brother liked the others pheromones?? So he smelled it?? That’s quite close?? Idk maybe I’m just thinking too much and he’s an extremely loyal subordinate... who knows ╮ (╯▽╰) ╭

Decent. If you like this kind of story you will probably decently enjoy this novel.

These are my impressions shortly after finishing it:

Likes

  • The ML is really likeable and proactive
  • The relationship between MC and ML is quite well developed. No love at first sight
  • The story/conflict, especially the final conflict, is pretty interesting and aside from some brainholes well done. It's not just some s*upid canon fodder type antagonists
  • The story doesn't fall into the ABO genre clichés like falling in love because of pheromones, or dubcon or noncon.
Dislikes

  • Not very detailed an in depth. Because the novel is fairly short some aspects felt neglected or forgotten. For example
    Spoiler

MC is supposed to have talent and knowledge in pharmacy too, but that doesn't show or play a role in the story. He just magically procured a brand new drug some years ago (backstory)

    [collapse]
  • MC is very inconsistently portrayed as the typical genius but socially inept type. Sometimes he understands social cues sometimes he is totally clueless. I'd say pick one
  • MC is VERY OP, which I tbh don't mind. But we get no backstory (which actually sounds really interesting) on how he got there and where his knowledge comes from. I like OPness, but not when (like here) the MC puts no effort into his skill and can just magically create new technology all the time.
So conclusion 3/5 average - decent

Having just finished four unsatisfying, nearly good stories before reading The Omega Can't Pretend, it was lovely to finally read something good!

The pacing is nice and tight, the action flows and works well, there are good plot twists you don't expect, the two main characters have nicely developed distinctive personalities and there are funny parts to lighten the story. A few little plot hiccups but they aren't too bad and this was a very interesting approach to the ABO universe.

I enjoyed the story quite thoroughly and hope you will too.... more>> :) <<less

For me, this book can be categorized as a serious story focus on plot. Yes, the leads have a very high degree of interaction but it's more focus on the mystery, investigation aspect and the underlying political struggle.

If you are for a light read, the story can be annoying. It's because while MC is very OP on his talent, he's obviously a pawn waiting for grabs. He's just a single person while there's multiple parties that have been monitoring him all this time and pulling strings around him. What more,... more>> MC is very indifferent, the indifferent kind where his lvl of anger is so low, you will feel angry because he never gets back at people that plotted him. He's not helpless, but it's kinda frustrating not seeing him struggle. Well, he's totally just a nerd that doesn't want to be bothered so it's kind of understandable as this was his character settings.

But if you're looking for political/plot focus book, then this is for you. In here, except for MC who unwillingly thrown into the pot, everyone have an agenda. (Kinda hates them all. The author did a good job making us sympathize with MC about how he wanted to get away from everything about them. I also want to kick them all away. I don't trust any of them.) The settings are typical ABO but the whole narration and building about the whole is pretty much solid.

Maybe what I like about this the most is that it was short. Just enough for me to reach a serious book without getting overwhelmed. (I like plot heavy books but I was never able to read them at one go because I would need to take a break.)

Also, the aspect about beta and the truth about it was amazing.

Spoiler

That betas is the path that human evolution choose. That, regardless what we think, this is the answer.

In all ABO stories, betas are always the majority. It was normal, and AO are the leading figures and has always been the most powerful. But in here, the author took this setting of ABO and use evolution theory. And it totally made sense! After all, in evolution theory, a specie will slowly shred the genes not useful for survival as a way of adaptation. So yes, humans are slowly shredding AO genes and that's why their population are getting smaller. Is this regression? Maybe but regression is also an evolution path.

Anyway, the way it was said in the story is very convincing. Like after hearing it, you will have a realization that it's so obvious but why didn't you think of it.

[collapse]

I just wish there's an extra. MC and ML didn't have that much sweetness yet. Also, I kinda hope that at least MC could get the recognition he deserved on his contribution. I mean, he shook the whole system (I would take it as his revenge to those who wanted to use him. Though of course for him, it's just a way to run away) and gave the betas their first real step to equality. Dude that deserves a historical recognition.

The ending is pretty much a close ending without loose ends. It just that it kinda lack enough details so you'll feel itchy about it and want to grab the author. But really, the ending isn't abrupt.

(I kinda remember stories about the last AOs and those stories are always sad. If this book is an independent small world, they would reach that point at well and I'm kinda sad as it's still considered as an elemination of a specie. Though that would still be at least a hundred yrs before it gets there.) <<less

Mediocre at best.

I have to admit that I kind of like MCs dry kind of personality but it was also annoying.

MC/ML relationship sucks. I feel like that romance tag needs to be deleted. There is no romance. ML and MC have a rather bad communication and misunderstand each other a lot. While ML falls in love, MC doesn't even have sparks and basically just uses ML.

The story has a lot of plot holes and story parts left dangling.

The story is readable, the translation is good but that's it.

I MTLed this story.

About the story

MC is a mysterious infamous mechanic running away from the imperial army for unknown reasons. He takes on a fake identity and lives in a slum city where he encounters a neighbour ML who is more than he appears. Slowly each encounter deepens the mystery of their identities and unveils a dark conspiracy that draws the MC into the centre of the storm.

... more>> About the MC

MC is someone who hides his emotions from everyone. He's defensive and lies to protect himself since that is how he has survived all this time. Throughout the novel, MC appears to be very intelligent, wooden, reluctant and distanced from all characters including ML. He is cautious and has strong self protection skills. The only passion he feels is for his love of mechanics. One of his quirks is his tendency to be honest in his words but in a way that socially can cause misunderstandings. He seems oblivious or uncaring to the misunderstandings he causes even if it bites back at him.

About the ML

ML is someone who doggedly pursues his goals. He starts off trying to solve a serial crime and accidentally encounters MC. In the process he slowly begins to care for MC and worry for his well being until those emotions deepen.

Why I rated this novel 3 stars

The author has failed to grasp how to create a character that has high defensive walls and restrained personality. Just not mentioning any emotions leaves MC flat and two dimensional. What the author needed to do was show the emotion behind the mask and let that slowly unfurl so the readers could see the change and the undercurrent of his thoughts. However from beginning to end of the novel, as a reader, I am left completely in the dark about who the MC is. I never found myself liking the MC and was only interested in reading for the plot. ML gets a bit more personality but it's never understood why ML is even in love with MC. Neither characters have an iota of chemistry with each other. The little bit of romance that is described is as substantial as thin air. The author could not convince me that MC even cares for ML because of all this mystery surrounding MC's inner thoughts, everything is hidden until a tiny bit at the end and it is not enough to convince me that MC and ML have a relationship at all.

The plot was interesting but not fleshed out enough to hold any weight. Due to the need to hide so many plot points for the sake of mystery, the plot really only ever unfolded some minor details. By the time the novel was finished, the entire plot struggle could probably have been condensed down to one full chapter. But it was strung out in little bits without enough stakes to make us truly appreciate the actions and motivations of antagonist characters that it ended up weakening the interesting plot. The antagonists actions were sometimes truly lacking in strategy. Because they were full of plot holes, I couldn't take the main antagonist seriously.

One last point was the gimping of MC's IQ and EQ at random points for plot reasons. MC makes a bunch of silly misunderstandings and assumptions that are so blatantly obvious, I don't buy that he wouldn't have figured out the truth earlier. He's supposed to be perceptive but gimping him for some flat comedic moments just seems to further weaken his characterization.

TL:DR

This is a novel with a wooden MC, persistent ML, and a conspiracy that carries unique ideas about Alpha, Omega and Beta genetics. Don't read this for the romance, it's not very convincing. If you find yourself not liking MC and hoping MC will warm-up to ML later in the novel, don't bother. He's barely going to melt a drop. If you can handle his characterization and enjoy the novel at the beginning, then keep reading because the plot is interesting if not a bit threadbare. It's alright for a read for plot reasons but don't expect any emotional depth whatsoever. <<less

I don't feel the love AT ALL. But the MC is an unique Omega. He is not the typical 'weak' Omega. I like his personality. But the Alpha is meh. Too bland as an Almighty alpha. The chemistry is a BIG zero. I don't feel the love from the MC throughout the story, only 1 sentence at the end of the last ch that described his feeling. But I don't regret reading this. Maybe this is your fav novel, so don't skip it just base on my review. Read it... more>> first yourself. Thank you for the translation. <<less

I love it when an ABO story has a great twist. I felt like this book did an amazing job of handling the awful gender dynamics inherent in these ABO world stories.

The author basically acknowledges that while the world setting is great for the story, it doesn't make sense for an advanced society. The dictator rule, the forced monitoring, the immense gender inequality, are all things that are signs of a rotting society. I'm honestly surprised this story didn't get censored to pieces.

Morals aside, I loved the characters in this... more>> story. The funny ai, the cold but caring friend, the unexpectedly devoted ml, the disillusioned and mechanics-crazy MC. I didn't think I would like the MC since he was so cold, but the author wrote a convincing character for him, and I found myself liking him despite my initial reservations.

Overall, I loved the story. If there was one thing I wished could be changed, it was the sad ending for the brother. <<less

Good read, good translation.

I enjoyed the plot and the romance. This novel felt more plot focused- around MC and his secrets; but at the same time it didn't make me feel like the romance wasn't there. Just a WARNING; there weren't really any romantic interactions through most of the novel. It was mainly ML who was in love with MC and thought MC felt the same, while for MC it took significantly longer to fall for ML and realize his feelings afterwards. As well as - he is not an... more>> emotionally expressive person - don't expect a tearful confession.

I read some reviews that had a problem with the protagonists' personalities, as well as romance aspect; to me it was pretty straightforward. - ML seems to have fallen in love with MC almost at first sight (not exactly on first meeting but he got attracted to MC pretty quickly) even if he doesn't realize it, I don't think there was much of a reason, but I also don't think love needs one. It's not a transaction but a feeling >_> And his delusion and misunderstanding that MC likes him seem to stem from his own attraction. So instinctively he misunderstands what MC does and says in accordance with what he'd like to happen and only realizes that was the case later on. In other words - a fool in love.

MC - he is only interested in robots and doesn't care about people. But gradually ML becomes the only person he feels close to and starts to care about him. He doesn't want ML to be hurt, sad or in trouble and even wants to make a mech for him just because he feels it would match him. Whatever his feelings are he does like and care about ML. Although maybe his thoughts aren't as romance driven as ML, he does go from not feeling comfortable with the s*xual aspect of marking, to accepting it (not because he's forced to or resigned himself, he just doesn't reject the idea anymore and the idea of being romantically involved feels more natural). He does admit it himself that he feels the same way as ML, even if his words are not as straightforward as saying "I love you", the message is still clear.

I don't think all couples need to say sweet words or stick to each other, in order to say that they are actually in love. As long as they are where they want to be with the person they want to be and know how the other feels, I think that's enough. And if MC really felt forced by ML to be in a relationship or didn't like it he would have shown it and likely cut it off. He has very clearly expressed his displeasure before so it's not like he is passive with everything. If he actually doesn't like something, he'll show it.

Well, that's all I got to say - plot is interesting but not unpredictable, the romance is more in the background and actually develops in second half of the story (in the capital). <<less

The misunderstandings are far from dramatic it was actually quite funny. The couple had a nice adventure. Both are op.

The side characters and everything besides the MC and ML were not fleshed out. I find the ending anti-climactic.

Pity cuz the middle arc is really very good. The world building is intruiging and the author is successful in making an interesting story with a lots of twist and turn (and faceslapping). BTW don't be mistaken. IT IS NOT DOGBLOOD. If you want to know what a read dog blood novel is,... more>> check my list with the same name.

Anyway the novel and its world has huge potential. It gave a it's opinion on questioning AO supremacy but fell short in the end and did not deliver a proper conclusion about that part. Even the romance ended with the couple getting together for real. A lot of unresolved things that could have been done in a fanwai but unfortunately there is none.

My rating is 3.75 but will round it up to 4 for the things I mentioned above. <<less

oh y oh myyy a nice story to read hahah just fr the synopsis they have a unique encounter. MC is charming despite him being focused on his robots etc. He has his side of being honest to some point people will misunderstand him but ayways that's 1 of his good points to ML, MC also took notice that he's been kidnapped nth times well of course he will fight on his own way and ML there's to add help. There's some funny lil misunderstandings not irritating though unlike some... more>> novels. Ml's super supportive to MC too and believes on his capabilities <<less

THE DETAILS! I see you my fellow social scientist. People usually use nonsense to build political plots, but this one here is pretty accurate when it comes to revolutionary process, academic field and state power struggle. Even the non-conventional warfare shows up. I saw some people in the comments felling the last half of the plot was bad, but I see a really well done and realistic job.

The author is really good mixing social codes (political and ideological) with romance. Even with the first kiss taking a while, I can... more>> see the path of character development done from the begining to the end. MC is really relatable, I see myself and my academic comrads on the research struggle being realistically represented. I LOVED HIS CHARACTERISTS His way of thinking and behaviour is pretty consistent. ML is a cutie. Powerful but his wife's golden retrivier. I also like that the omega has more control of the relationship than the alfa. The fact that they like safe s*x and there wasn't any sign of pregnancy trope anywhere made me happy. <<less

Started with high expectations, ended with disappointment.

I thought MC was some sort of undercover agent on a mission, didn't expect he was to be treated so badly in life. He was beaten, tortured, physically assaulted, kidnapped multiple times.

So miserable the whole way through.

ML's temperament turned really bad from that gentle caring guy to a dog thinking with his dick. The romance I did not feel it. The feelings was forced on MC who had no emotions in the first place. Is like picking cars he picked the one suited... more>> him best in the end.

I also expected alot of Mechas, but didn't expect it went biologic on me then come politic turmoil, then royal drama plot. So much yet I don't get why it was needed.

I skim through everything in one day. It was not my cup of tea. Just really I didn't get what I was reading. What was the goal?

The ending was also ala tr*sh

Spoiler

The ending also was very unsatisfying. Cute MC really was unfair to have fake death and those evil people didn't get punished at all.

A solid and satisfying read that takes place in an unconventional ABO world. The story is engaging and keeps you on edge with its twists and turns. I really like the atypical couple pairing of cold omega and passionate alpha as it’s usually the alpha who is cold and stoic. The MC is not heartless but a tech genius who would rather fix robots and tinker with machinery than interact with people.

At the beginning of the story, both the alpha and the omega are disguised as betas when they meet.... more>> This leads to comedic misunderstandings and some hilarious conversations. One is investigating a series of crimes and the other is hiding from the law. The story eventually leads to their discovery of a deep political plot.

The story is not as romance-heavy as typical BL novels and the MC is slow to realize his feelings. Their expressions of love are unusual but sweet. At just under 100 chapters, this is a great read with a good mystery and political intrigue without dragging anything out. No extras as I think the author ran into health issues but thankfully the author completed the novel. For me, this was definitely a page-turner! <<less

I love the MC, very intelligent and focused. The plot is also interesting with an interesting antagonist.

Romance: ugh the ML is so annoying, his constant misunderstandings of casual comments from the MC, thinking that they mean the MC loves him. Apparently looking at someone's bed means that you're interested in that person... NOT! What a dumbass, he's the reason I'm not rating this novel 4/5.
