I had so many problems with this novel. Soooo many. But I was still entertained enough to read the whole thing... So 3 stars.

This novel features:

    • Economics that would make any community bankrupt in a day. I'm willing to bet actual money that the author flunked math at least twice.
    • The MC looked like a girl and acted like a damsel in distress and the other girls treated him like a love rival and not a man.
    • Some VERY dubious consent.
    • Next to no decent female characters. In the whole 700+ chapters.
    • Not enough romance. And no, s*x does not equal romance.
    • Drastic overuse of the phrase "not too long, but also not too short".
    • SO MANY plot holes! All over the place!
    • No intelligent characters. But I guess an author is confined to the limits of their own intellect...
    • Characters just randomly changing a lot (example - at first the MC is described as someone who doesn't care about food, but then later randomly becomes a glutton with binge eating tendencies.)
But it was funny, I guess.

I couldn't bring myself to continue this one. Started because of the hype, but decided to drop and find something else, otherwise I thought it's going to make me lose all interest in Chinese BL novels. Although each chapter is relatively short, which should make the reading process faster, but to me it felt tortureously long. Unfortunately, I couldn't find anything to like in this novel.

What made me drop:

  • Writing style was the most problematic at all times. Sometimes logic was defiled. The unnecessary amount of details that are dumped at you is immense. I couldn't care less about percentage of successful or failed pills, it could be brought several times in dosed manner, but not time and time and time again that I started to skip these parts entirely and wow, nothing changed, absolutely nothing if you skip those;
  • Cheat characters. For my personal preference I enjoy when character goes through development, if a character has cheats from the get-go the story loses some thrill. And when characters meat no challenge at all the story becomes boring. You know that MC and ML will defeat everyone with ease. Pity that author spend more time on details about pills, but compared to that any fights or conflicts were double less the word count;
  • Romance feels forced. Basically there's no substance to their feelings when it all comes from "feed me your pills" and then "let's sleep together and pa-pa-pa". It feels like a relationship of convenience, nothing more;
  • MC made me so annoyed with him. The only thing he always thought about was money, sure thing at first it was a thing for survival, but later it felt like he was a greedy gnome. Sure thing he wanted to upgrade his level, but honestly made me feel like 'no'. Even his beauty upgraded from consuming and bathing in spiritual water ahaha;
  • The world-building honestly felt empty to me. While author described huge cities it felt like one street and huge walls of some rare really expensive material., which have no purpose whatsoever. Any other character felt like a malicious prick, as if the whole purpose of their existence is steal or kill or violate. What righteous path ffs. Everyone felt like a bully. The whole beast thing was also underwhelming;
The only good part, I guess, when that annoying female cannon fodder was finally killed, because God forbids writing adequate female characters, they all need... more>> to be spoiled, possessive, jealous and poisonous :)

Anyway, fairly disappointed, good things I dropped this and found way better novels to read right after and save the sinking impression of Chinese BL domain. <<less

The story is pretty good and interesting. Mc's transition from weak to strong was believable and deserved. The world building is amazing, compared to other novels. The side-characters also have their own personalities and quirks, even if it sadly lacks female representation. Most villains are meh, but some are cool.

I just wished we had more than the main cp throughout the story as main characters or even just important recurring characters that aren't also mc's beasts. Each arc cycles through new characters and at some point I don't care about new characters anymore. I feel like the story could have benefitted in one or a couple more characters who grow weak to strong as a foil to the main cp, they don't even have to be enemies and could have just been their companions (not including beasts) who would hopefully be as cool and strong as the main cp, just anything to break away from the MC and ml.

MC and ML are the worst parts in an otherwise good story.

Like some have already said, ML is very rigid in the sense that we never see him grow or change as a character in these hundreds of chapters. He has no flaws and no weakness, and aside from his goal and his love for MC, we never truly understand or relate to him. His character amounts to a stereotypical overbearing op male lead. That's it. That's the only thing I learned of him in all these chapters.

MC isn't any better. While his growth in power is one of the selling points of the story, his growth in character is one of its downfalls. At times he's so irritating because of his selfishness and self-serving personality common to wuxia mcs. These MCs steal and cheat and aggravate others to get what they want and is celebrated as good and amazing and powerful. MC is definitely like this, and backed up by the ml, too. The characters who try to do the same to him (as MC does to others) are evil and scum. The way this story portrays MC is with a self-centered morality where whatever MC does is good and whatever others do is bad.

Then of course, his characterization derails when he's with the ml. While their romance is a good kind of slow burn, it has made them into a farce of themselves. MC turns into a submissive pansy and a yes man to ml. He can't say no and he can't speak up. Where is the confident and sassy mc? Or does he just have a split personality? ML is too controlling of the MC and never lets him decide for himself. He's the most powerful person and he gets easily jealous for no other reason than comedy or drama.

Their relationship summarized:

    • MC as the henpecked husband
    • ML as the controlling wife (who also wears the pants in this cp)

It's not romantic at all and their dual cultivation is lackluster, too. We never get any idea how much they love each other. Their feelings are shallow and glossed over. It feels more like they don't mind being together than actually wanting to be. Better skip these parts.

This was my first Chinese novel, and a BL at that. It makes me nostalgic the same way people who've had Grey Goose think back to their college days of drinking Smirnoff and wonder with amazement how they could drink such cheap stuff.

I was hooked at the beginning and flew through the first few hundred chapters, but by the end it was only thanks to Exiled Rebels' dedicated translation - and the "I'm already this far in, I might as well finish it" mindset - that I dragged my feet... more>> to the finish line.

LMW taught me that stallion novels are probably not my cup of tea. Despite my 2-star rating, the fact that I can remember much of the story is a really impressive feat for a 700+ chapter saga, considering the challenge of making story arcs, people, and plot devices unique and memorable. It's a nice touch that the world expands with the MC's growth, so that he quite literally broadens his horizons on his journey.

Nonetheless it is a 2-star rating because for every 1 thing I can praise enjoying, I can list 2 things I remember taking issue with, and some of these are pretty big flaws that I need to point out so people read at their own discretion.

The 2 most fundamental characters, the MC and ML, I barely tolerated. That's NOT a good thing. There's nothing fluffy or meng about a ML who constantly ridicules the MC for having a negative IQ and punishes his unwilling other with sex, to the point that MC worries restoring his bodily health immediately will be interpreted as in invitation for more "punishment". Again, that's not meng, that's weird and dysfunctional. It's actually kind of hilarious that the power-leveling aspect of the stallion novel helped out in this case, otherwise I would have dropped it without a second thought.

Another thing many reviewers also pointed out was that virtually all the female characters are incredibly stupid, bitchy, or both. The simply stupid but good ones were minor supporting characters, which in my memory only amounted to like 1 or 2; the vast majority were default cannon fodder & villainesses, the author's favorite flavor being the green tea bitch.

Though there were a handful of memorable and likeable characters, some even with unique background stories, there were far more characters who were too alike to distinguish because they were just simply filling their role as martial brother/villainess/scheming elder/etc. Hell, there were characters who only had a name and I remember having to reread previous pages/chapters just to figure out why they even exist.

After stretching out the book to obscene, money-milking lengths, the author went YOLO at the final climax & ending. It was so basic that I bet a 5-year-old would have been able to come up with the same thing. <<less

I am extremely sad. This book was one of the first ever BL books that I started reading. The updates from this book is what I look forward to every morning. After 700 something chapters, it has finally finished.

I loved it. It was enjoyable, funny, dramatic, intriguing, and a master piece! I highly recommend reading this book, and if you don’t you’re missing out. I personally love cultivation novels, cough maybe because I have a thing for guys with long hair cough, but yes. They’re so cute. You start to... more>> get attached to them after seeing their journey throughout the whole thing, and it made some scenes so heart breaking that I started crying on the bus.

This novel is relatively relaxed even though it's quite long but it is something that I wouldn't consider extremely tense. Yes, there are a lot of secrets to uncover and everything but the MC and the ML never actually bump into a problem that they can't resolve. The plot though is quite interesting and I can say for sure that it will hook you on at some point. In terms of romance, it is there but it isn't everywhere. I would say that this is more of a plot-orientated novel.

Having... more>> finished the novel, I'm actually quite sad, I'm going to miss YXM and LX. <<less

This was already said, but has to be said again. The ML is too controlling and manipulatice. Everything has to go his way. He mocks MC most of the time and makes fun of him (I didn't find the joke about MC's double-digit funny, it was brought up way too many times) It isn't funny, it is rather mean. The MC is clearly bothered by this but he's afraid of ML. The ML would just force himself on the MC, even if the other is in a bad condition... more>> and doesn't want to do the do. While some of the side interactions are really cute, it is not a healthy relationship.

While the story is alone by itself and the MC is hardworking and very loveable - the story is pretty much based on their relationship, I can not give one more star.

This novel would be a masterpiece for me, if their relationship would contain equal mutual respect. <<less

This is my 2nd try at a translated Chinese novel. The 1st was Against The Gods which a friend raved about. I got excited and tried it but the MC was such a douche, selfish, and so disgustingly perverted. I hated him so I had a horrible impression on Chinese novels.

BUT I tried again, this time with a BL novel in the hopes of not encountering a Every-female-is-wet-for-the-MC situation. And I feel like I hit the jackpot! This novel has a surprisingly good worldbuilding and plot. At least in comparison... more>> to the first CN novel I read. And the main couple is monogamous which is such a relief. The MC is smart and capable. Best part, the writing/story can be hilarious which is new.

Sadly, it does have parts I don't like. One of which is the power balance of the couple. I don't like the seme/uke relationship as I don't think its all that healthy or good (Sadly, almost all slash stories use this trope). But at least the couple cares about each other. I just don't like the whole Ling Xiao just having his way with the MC regardless of all his voiced objections. Too much like r*pe to me. But the s*x scenes are spaced quite far apart that I can mostly ignore the forceful undertones and enjoy the story.

Another thing I don't like is how the MC just seems to be not as smart/capable/sneaky when interacting with Ling Xiao as with other people. This is probably also part of the whole forcing against the MC part I didn't like.

But still, overall the story has far more good than bad. Plus, there are so many chapters and exilerebels updatas a chapter every day!! <<less

With the high ratings and regards for this novel I really, really tried to enjoy it.
The story in the beginning is so focused on numbers that I almost didn't make it through the chapters. Page after page is used to describe percents, magical herbs, magical pills and what not. I went into this novel thinking I had found a BL novel that I'd enjoy, and instead found some kind of twisted Farmville story.

To top it all off, everytime something special is mentioned, you can be absolutely certain that the... more>> MC will achieve that. A rare beast? OH BEHOLD THE MC GOT IT! A rare plant? LO AND BEHOLD THE MIGHTY MC DID IT AGAIN. I did not enjoy the MC at all, and only became more and more frustrated with how "lucky" he was, yet totally ignorant to everything.

Then there's the seme-guy... Don't even get me started on him. Being rude all the time, bordering to raping the MC, not showing any affection... Not to mention the discriptions of his dick. For godness sake, I know that this is a yaoi, and big dicks belongs to the seme and all... But... Really? R e a l l y?

I tried, I honestly did. But I found myself being so utterly annoyed at everything happening, and the MCs, that I gave up. Perhaps it gets better later on. Who knows. But if it takes that long, I don't feel like it's worth it. <<less

To quote the translator, "This story is really just an adventure story. The bl stuff is just a side note. The steamy stuff is really next to zero in this story."

That said, this only applies to the first 100 and so chapters. After its established through its usually just a bland, 'and then there was smexy times' and the rare detailed one.

The plot was good in the beginning but it tapers off somewhere around 300s. One can only take so many 'school' arcs. Especially when they never learnt anything in... more>> school and instead trained or got money. <<less

I tried reading this, but I just can't get into it. The MC is like a doormat - no personality or quirkiness. There's not even an attempt at humor. The only reason I can stand this flurry of transmigration novels is that it often makes fun of itself or creates ironic/hilarious moments that makes it so I don't try to take it seriously.

The novel is so wooden it takes the fun out of this genre. I'm still in the first 100 chapters, so I haven't gotten to the part where... more>> EXR took over the translation. But the translation for the first section is pretty subpar. <<less

*I must be clear that I have read up to chapter 90 and don’t plan to read further.

While I like this story a lot, I have decided not to continue on with it. First, I want to explain what makes this a good story, and then why the interactions of the couple has made me stop reading.

I love fantasy and so the best point of the novel for me is the world building which is super fun and interesting. The main character is also pretty charming. The side characters, leveling... more>> system, and setting are all very nice. My favourite part of the novel was simply watching how the main character, You XiaoMo advanced, how he utilized his resources and grew all while combatting the hardships popping up that were not even of his own fault. I was cheering for him throughout the whole thing, and I am sad to stop reading because I want to see where he goes from here. Even though he has some good luck in advancement, the scrutiny he receives and his humble personality make him an underdog character you can’t help but want to succeed.

The main problem I have with this story is the character of You XiaoMo’s love interest, Ling Xiao. To go off topic for a moment, to some degree, the introduction of Ling Xiao makes You XiaoMo’s growth a little boring. A much more powerful person, he is able to get You XiaoMa resources and increase his skills in a way that feels kinda like cheating, when seeing You XiaoMo get better from his own unique attitude and hard work would have been much more fulfilling. But I do not resent his introduction as it provides a lot more opportunity for interesting adventure and action.

But this is definitely not the central issue I have with Ling Xiao. He is very much the epitome of the ‘bullying lover’ trope. While this can be interesting, in terms of Ling Xiao it is just annoying and persists to the point that he becomes abusive. I love romance but I became unable to enjoy the story with the way Ling Xiao manipulates You XiaoMo. Especially because when the story finally broke through to the romantic and smutty scenes, all of them through chapter 90 had elements that were forceful or coercive, coming across much more like sexual assault than romance. This, combined with Ling Xiao’s constant ‘bullying’ and unreasonable jealousy made me hate Ling Xiao and give up on the story. Although I am not a man, I am gay, and I loved reading this because having actual gay romance in a good story that is not slice-of-life is rare. That’s why seeing this story fall into the cesspit of yaoi abuse glorification made me incredibly sad, and from the other reviews, it doesn’t seem to change much 200 chapters later. That’s why, if you are a fan of healthy romance, you will be disappointed by this novel. <<less

Despite the many high reviews, I would like to give this 3.5 stars. The extra 0.5 is for effort.

This is primarily a true xianxia cultivation/alchemy novel, with yaoi/BL thrown in.

... more>> The author puts a lot of effort into building the world - cultivation system, alchemical processes, sect and social structure. The boy x boy relationship makes the story more interesting and fluffy. However, in terms of actual plot and character development, this story falls flat.

Now on to the detailed review...

You XiaoMou suddenly dies and is reborn in the alchemy division of a sect. Though he has no memory of his new body's previous life, and the innate talent of that body is low, he decides to become a successful mage (aka alchemist).

Shortly after reincarnating, he discovers that the most famous senior-brother in the sect, the martial arts genius Ling Xiao, has been replaced by a mysterious and powerful entity. This new senior-brother takes an unusual interest in You XiaoMou, first in his pills, then his personality, then his body...!

My biggest complaint with this novel is the main character.

You XiaoMou is a typical BL uke -- weak-willed, hesitant, cowardly, air-headed, and good-hearted. Many of the comments and reviews on this novel talk about how adorable and pure he is -- but honestly, I think that is only through the rose-colored glasses of the fujoshi readers. (Even though I, too, am a fujoshi...)

Unlike most "pure" uke characters, he doesn't really help anyone, nor is he unusually kind to anyone. He is mostly anti-social and hated by everyone, other than a few senior-brothers. Even though he is reborn with super-protagonist god-given cheat talent, he isn't very intelligent. He rarely thinks deeply about things, is always confused, and is extremely clumsy. In other stories, this is balanced out by goodwill and acts of kindness or humor -- but You XiaoMou lacks those traits to make him more likeable. He rarely ever makes decisions, never plans ahead, has small ambitions, and his entire story develops depending on how he is mindlessly dragged around by the male lead, Ling Xiao.

Even up to Chapter 240... Everything You XiaoMou gained in this story was either handed to him on a platter by Ling Xiao, or was a direct result of his god-given talent, rather than any real effort, struggle, or sacrifice on his part.

As we near chapter 300, the MC's personality has inexplicably taken a 180° turn. Suddenly he is outspoken, greedy, extremely confident, easily goes against authority, quick to fight, makes friends easily, quick-witted, business-minded... How? What?

Ling Xiao, the male lead, is more likeable than the main character, due to his role as the "dangerous seme." He has all the usual qualities -- good looks, mysterious background, strong powers, and a personality that is sexy, dangerous, teasing, and very possessive of the MC. He's supposed to be extremely mysterious, but the full extent of his powers are described in an early chapter so there is no surprise about it. One thing that bothers me is that he is extremely powerful with no limitations at all, he never makes mistakes, knows everything, and he falls for the MC extremely quickly and with little reason. However, if you put on your fujoshi-glasses, you can ignore his shortcomings in favor of his utter perfection.

Despite my complaints with the characters, where this novel really stands out is that it's written as a real cultivation story, rather than just yaoi fluff. The author has obviously put a lot of thought into how the world works. The descriptions of how sects, alchemy, martial arts, levels, auctions, etc are organized are all very detailed without being fact lists/word-vomit. The pacing of events in the story is a little bit slow, but overall not too bad.

The events in the story are very standard for xianxia -- reincarnation, aptitude testing, soul storage/herb dimensions with high spiritual energy, alchemy competitions, auctions, beast-taming, and forbidden treasure realms that only open once every few years. Nothing very original, but all executed fairly well.

The yaoi/BL romance is both fluffy and sexy. It's not very deep, but the characters' interactions (and especially the love/flirting scenes) are written well.

There are some plot holes here and there, but when you combine the decent BL with the honest attempt at writing a detailed cultivation story, you get a passable novel. Despite the lack of character depth/development (and my complaints), it's still a fairly easy and enjoyable novel to read. Just don't think too deeply about it, and you can enjoy the ride. <<less

An awesome novel (even for people that don't really like BL). There are a couple of MATURE scenes, but it's not too bad.

I think they're pretty much together though, so that might change...

The MC is not the sharpest knife in the drawer. He feels really average in terms of personality and intelligence, which is realistic???

The side characters are awesome... maybe even better then the MC? *runs*

Brief moments of humor lol

Good translations. Fluffy contracted pets.

OP co-MC. You Xiaomo really hasn't done much by himself, but it seems...

there might be more action for him in the future? He's going to a school where he'll learn skills to use with his soulforce.

This was by far the longest novel i've ever read in a while, the story itself was simply beautiful, funny, at the same time sad.

However the MC and ML's relationship is a little complicated, although their relationship may seem somewhat abusive, it's really not, the MC and ML really do love each other deeply, their relationship starts to shine even more above chapter 600+, overall the world building has a lot of details within, which made reading way more enjoyable.

At times however, whenever Ling Xiao is with him, You Xiao Mo might seem a little dumber compared from his time alone.

However I do have a small problem regarding the supporting characters, within each new arc, the supporting characters either weren't brought up again or they will appear and then disappear, never heard from again or for some time. (Or some important ones.)

Such as You Xiao Mo's teacher from the academy arc, we never really got to know what happens after the final arc ends, the author did not wrote any scenes about YXM going back into the academy to meet with his teacher and tell him about the results of the task he gave to YXM.

Nonetheless if you aren't too bothered about those details, it doesn't take away the enjoyment of reading this novel. The translator also did a great job with the novel as well.

PS.. Also the smut scenes are satisfying too (͡° ͜ʖ ͡°) <<less

It was definitely one of the best danmei novel IMO. The 700+ chapters are worth reading, every update you’ll crave for it. The plot was exciting and the MC is not your typical Mary Sue “save me” protagonist. I love that his powerful on his own and the ML is so smitten to our Momo. Boss and Momo’s chemistry are overflowing! 😍💓💓 If you like adventure, fantasy, wuxia, BL, powerful ML, powerful halo MC then this ones for you! Enjoy! 💗

To sum this novel up... It's pretty much a BL version of a stallion novel. But don't be scared away! Neither of these things makes it a bad read, but I guess it's all up to your personal preference. It's more of a 'satisfying' novel than a 'refreshing' one, lots of OP MC and ML action later on and tons of face slapping. It consistently follows the plot which is nice but as it goes on it feels like the author is just dragging it out.

The author is also very... more>> fond of certain events (idk how to describe them but if you read it you'll get what I mean) and at some point it starts to feel a little repetitive. I'm also a bit disappointed because some of the relationships between the MC and the side characters were pretty weak, and by the end of the novel there are so many characters that it's hard to keep track of them all and remember who did what.

The one thing that I really appreciate about it though is that the MC and ML get some pretty strong development. The ML is overbearing but not in a "yandere for the MC" kind of way, and the MC is a bit stupid (lovably) and naive but not frustratingly so. Their personalities balance each other out and even if you're not a fan of BL or yaoi you can at least appreciate their dynamic.

This is the kind of story that grows on you, which is why I read all 700+ chapters and enjoyed (almost) every second of it. At times it takes some patience to get through some of the more boring chapters, but overall there's a lot of thrilling action, suspense, mystery, and humor that makes it all worth it when you reach the last chapter (not to mention the extras are a real treat). <<less
