The Husky and His White Cat Shizun

Description

Mo Ran thought becoming Chu Wanning’s disciple was a mistake.

His shizun was really too much like a cat while he himself was a dumb pup who’d only slobber and wag his tail.

Dogs and cats were different by nature; originally, the dumb pup didn’t want to reach his furry paws out to that cat.

At first he thought, dogs should be with dogs, like his shixiong, beautiful and tame like a cute Japanese Spitz, and the two of them together would surely be a match made in heaven.

Yet, after having died and reborn, after having lived two lives, the one he hauled back each time to his den in the end was always the one he couldn’t stand at first: that snow-white kitty shizun.

I didn't stop reading the first 50 chapters. I was fascinated. But as the plot progressed it became more complicated and the tragedy is too much, it seems that the author only wanted to give us pain and pain and more pain that ended up being a nuisance to finish it.

Where do I even begin to review? Seriously, after addictively reading all 300-ish chapters, all I could say was WO DE TIAN AH! I had to create an account just to leave reviews because I have a lot to say about this book!

First of all, I have crazy gratitude for the translators. The unsung heroes who either personally translated the words themselves or made direct edits from the MTLSs. And those who even helped to put footnotes to explain some chinese idioms to us non chinese folks. Superheroes!

Theme

Can I... more>> just say, the level of angst throughout the entire book really got me wondering what was on the author's mind the entire time! Did the author suffer a traumatic childhood? Maybe she was subjected or exposed to endless sufferings, bottomless heartbreaks or she could be a part of tragic turnings in life herself! The angst Mo Ran was going through was written so beautifully, resonated with the readers and for 300 chapters, my heart kept tearing and tearing. Although angst being the main theme, I was bawling my eyes out on the level of loyalty and devotion the MLs had for each other. When you think it's hopeless and it's time to quit the book, the author makes you step on a landmind and rips your head with another plot twist.

Plot

I have to admit, the story started beautifully. Dragging us in and enveloping us with hate for the ML. I thought to myself, wow, this dude is an A-hole, does the author want us to sympathise with this dude or something? However it may seem, 50 chapters in, I was still reading! And thank god I read the tags before starting the novel. It is indeed unreliable narration from the ML POV from start to finish! It was as though the narrator banged his head so badly in the beginning, started with a totally sidetracked POV, but little bits and pieces of the story comes in throughout the chapters leaving me flabbergasted throughout the whole novel. The story took an unexpected turn, gave me details of side plots I never knew I needed and when Shizun broke down at chapter 200ish, I just lost myself in wave of emotions. The gore and graphic descriptions were proportionate, never discounting the details we needed in order to relate to the scenes, but at the same time, not too much to the point we need a good 5 mins to calm ourselves before moving to a happier chapter. The emotions were descriptive, the scenes moved from one to another smoothly and when you start seeing a plot hole, this plot hole is suddenly filled abundantly much later and links together with the other chapters like perfect parts of a jigsaw puzzle. Although I wished for a less tragic turn in last 50 chapters, I had to submit to the fact that this was the theme the author was leaning to.

Characters

There's too many to my taste. But this is the case with a lot of Chinese xianxia/wuxia themed novels. I didn't find myself confused with so many characters, instead, I got frustrated because I wasn't interested in the back story of these side guys. Turns out, I was super wrong as the stories relate to each other and helped with the suspense build up which got me going back to the chapters I purposely skipped. I hated the MLs at first, they were uninteresting, annoying and had every bit of angst that was very unnecessary as it looked like they were purposely written like that to satisfy the yandere/tsundere theme readers. However, I still got s**ked in because I was overly curious. The character development was slow, then suddenly took a crazy turn, became ferocious and then before you know it, the author ends the character! Just when you start warming yourself up in a pool of hot water, someone throws in a bucket of ice! My angst was instantly activated.

Overall

Read this. Prepare yourself to dream about this, dwell in the after thoughts and question your life decisions. I know this will be adapted into a tv drama. I just hope the screen writers can showcase the exact same theme or else, it would really shatter the expectations of those who have read the novels. <<less

You know, after MDZS, I thought I knew pain. After not crying over TGCF, I thought I was an emotionless puppet made out of wood. But then I tapped into 2Ha, and boy was I wrong. This novel made me cry like no other novel could, to the point where I would curl up on my bed and think about it until I fell asleep. This novel is DEEP and I recommend it so darn hard. I have to say, I liked this even more than the MXTX books, and... more>> I think this book deserves so much more.

CHARACTERS:

  • Mo Ran is one of the most complex MC's you will ever see. In the past, he was the biggest scum, but you will come to find that it wasn't all his fault. He is actually just a kind little child who wants to help people, but his hatred had been amplified, making him a demonic piece of tr*sh in his past life. But in his present life, he wants to fix all the mistakes that had been made and restart all over again. Gradually, we, as the readers, alongside Mo Ran get to reveal everything and watch this little boy grow up and change for the better. From the character himself, to his development, to his motivations and everything, I was absolutely stunned. Watching all different versions of Mo Ran come together to finally form one coherent entity was confusing, but still satisfying to the max.
  • Chu Wanning, the shou, isn't just any typical shou either. He is cold, oppressive, mean, but deep down, he is unsure of himself. He is insecure about how he's so cold that nobody likes him. He thinks that he is so ugly that a child will get scared to the point of crying by him. He had always been alone, even from his childhood, and he hadn't known how to deal with people being fond of him. He wants to save the common people, but in the end, he felt that he still hadn't done enough. He is the most babiest of babies and must be protected at all costs.
  • The villain was great. He was hateable, but at the same time, very pitiful. The thing is, unlike most villains, the one in 2ha wasn't trying to kill or hurt people. He was trying to save people. He was trying to save his own people that had been oppressed and hated for thousands of years, and won't consider the consequences if it means his people could be saved. In the end, I just couldn't hate him, but rather feel bad for him. If things didn't play out like they did, he very much could've been a hero.
  • Xue Meng is best boy. I don't need to say more, but I will. Xue Meng's character development is completely mind-blowing, from the narcissistic young master of Sisheng peak, to a responsible young man who has lost everything, but still keeps carrying on despite that. Due to his own pride, he had never been able to express how much he loved everything and everyone until they all were gone. He no longer cares about pride or honor like he did in his past, he just wants to be with the things and people he loves, and that is the most precious and heartbreaking thing ever.
  • There was not a single character you could completely hate (except a few dumb cannon fodders). Every character had their own reasons for doing things and they all had their own aspirations and personalities. Even with 311 chapters, it isn't enough to explore every side of these complex, multifaceted characters.
  • Mei Hanxue. Just Mei Hanxue. Both of them
PLOT:

  • Honestly, I'm just speechless about the plot. It was so complex and well thought out, I don't even know what to say about it anymore. You have to go read this book yourself to see why it's soo amazing. Just let me remind you here: pay attention to every single little detail, even the mini theaters. Everything is important.
You know what, I don't even want to finish this review. Just go read this book right now and you'll understand. However, this book is very, very heavy and deals with a lot of R18 themes in depth (rape, mu*der, morality, etc.) and doesn't just brush them off. If that doesn't fit your taste, refrain from reading this <<less

*sigh* can I say I want to kill Mo Ran?

BECUZ HECK I DO

*takes a deep breath* OK. So the novel itself is very well written, engaging, and angsty, and a bit lovely (though in some parts of the latter half it became very exhausting) Anyway, I love Chu Wanning, I cried for him so much, he was so pitiful *cries* I wanted to give him the world.

Mo Ran on the other hand can go fxxk himself. I know, I know that he had quite a bit of a character... more>> development and some things were done unconsciously BUT WANNING SUFFERED OK ?! And Wanning maybe blind and deaf to forgive him BUT I CAN'T. <<less

This is a masterpiece, the story so far is in a complete mystery by the MC's perspective (seriously there were pretty much a lot of plot twist, specially about the MC himself), I think I understand why some people couldn't continue reading the problem is that MC and ML "past" (before MC was "back" to the "past"), because yeah technically speaking he was an assh*le with him and with all the torture he did to ML ... more>>
Spoiler

but he wasn't actually the bad guy here, he was technically controlled and brainwashed by the villain because he sacrificed himself in order to protect his master from the brainwashing, what saddens me was that he loved ML all that time even through his mind was all twisted by that mental torture, he really didn't deserve all that sh*t he had an horrible childhood, his father abandoned him and his mother, his mother died of hunger, when she died no one helped him take her corpse to cemetery, he literally dragged her with his five year old body, it was heartbreaking when he digged a hole and saw his mother's decomposed body and him hugging it and crying to take him with her, besides the brainwashing was very strong because it washed away his good memories and only left the bad ones that's why he was with much hatred, because he forgot when his mother said to him to not hate anyone

[collapse]
, but for those who want to read it I'll just say have patience, after chapter 100 you'll see one of the greatest redemption and character development from MC, he really changes a lot and for good besides he treats ML like a treasure, he has like 4 character development (the author also explains it in one chapter), the story really explains everything specially how was able for MC to actually change himself, it was mostly satisfying, the romance is a bit slow but I can say they do a great couple, both ML and MC would sacrifice themselves for each other without thinking, they really deserve the best after all the sh*t they had to suffer because of the d*mn villain (can't forgive him after all the things he did, deserves the worst, after so much suffering to so many people), there's a bit of tragedy towards the final arc of the story (cried a lot) but has a happy ending, just that this one isn't a normal "reborn" story, I recommend it giving it a try, yeah it could be difficult at first with what MC did but he really changes a lot and makes amends, this one is noticeable after chapter 100 <<less

I finally did a proper, whole read-through Er Ha: and I wasn't disappointed! I'll keep this spoiler free as much as possible.

About content warnings: despite how horrifying the apparent non-consent seems to be, I want to say that the REAL Mo Ran is an absolute GREEN FLAG. Please do not judge him from the get-go as many do, lest you become like the others in the story; there's more to Mo Ran than meets the eye. If you want to understand why Mo Ran is so full of hatred towards... more>> Chu Wanning despite the latter not seeming to have done much to him, I'll give you a rather tame response.

Spoiler

The person who turned Mo Ran into the cruel, savage Tanxia Jun, was actually planning on turning Chu Wanning into the crazy despot. However, Mo Ran discovered this plot, and in order to protect his Shizun, took on this curse. This curse not only turns people crazy, it also eats away all of your good memories. Thus, Mo Ran cannot remember anything good about Chu Wanning.

[collapse]

Mo Ran is quite an amazing character. Both he and Chu Wanning are too good for this world. I also loved Shi Mei, Xue Meng, Jiang Xi, Ye Wangxi, and Mei Hanxue; every one of them is a delight to read about.

Plot: the plot was full of twists and turns, but unlike Yu Wu, I would say the knives in Er Ha weren't so bad. It might be because Er Ha is a very character-driven story, with the plot mostly being a device for characters to develop; for better or worse. There were a few times names were lost on me, but surprisingly, despite being an epic of sorts, Er Ha is very easy to understand.

Characters: every character had something about them, with secrets hidden well beneath the surface of their skin. Even the elders of SiSheng we don't get to see much of were very loveable. And the characters you need to hate are VERY easy to hate hehe. And there are some characters you just can't bring yourself to hate.

I highly recommend this book! Don't worry; the extras make up for the lack of fluff! <<less

I have such a difficult relationship with this story. I think it probably deserves five stars but I just can't, something about it (or about me) prevents me from loving it wholeheartedly. I started reading it several times and dropped because MC just rubbed me in the wrong way. But even though I dropped it, I still had the feeling that there is something about it that I will see, I just need to try harder. It was not because of popularity, it was like... I don't know, you taste... more>> something new and dislike it, but something compels you to try again and again.

And finally, on the nth attempt, I loved it. I read it almost non-stop for days, was completely overwhelmed with the world, the characters, was raving about MC, ML and everyone else.

But later... it's hard to explain. The aftertaste was not good. I can say the reason:

Spoiler

The third party in the final OTP. I know, I know, Mo Ran and Taxian-jun are the same person. But I can't do anything, for me they are not. For me it feels like a threesome. Which makes me feel somewhat distanciated from everyone in this threesome. It's good it works for the characters but I can't like the result with all my heart.

[collapse]

So, for me it's a beautiful story that everyone should read. But it is not one of my favorites and not the one I will re-read. <<less

Its been a while since Ive read this novel, and Im just currently searching this up right now to see other people's reviews about it. Im not planning on rereading it, maybe in the future, but now?ye no. I dont wanna be a mess again.

I remember the times where I cried my heart out to the point where I would like to exaggerate of me crying blood.(πーπ)

If someone needs a recommendation on what they want to read next, I'd immediately say Erha. Two reasons. And that is I want them... more>> to suffer with me but at the same time, want them to see a well-written heart-wrenching story that they had ever read in their entire lifetime. (´◡`) <3

The most that I was irritated about is not the characters in the novel, but the translation. Yes, it was much more painful to read the mtl that you sometimes feel like you've lost ur braincells one by one but at the same time, trying so hard to gather it again to have atleast the understanding on what you're reading (ノД`)

From the beginning, I knew that I really love Chu Wanning and I felt that hes been misunderstood somehow. Idk if its just my intuition, or because Ive seen a bit spoiler... ᘛ⁐̤ᕐᐷ This novel will forever be held dear in my heart.

I get that some of y'all dont like the MC for what he did and y'all dropping it, but not me tho. Little me was all in it for the drama (⌐▨_▨) (•̀ᴗ•́) و ̑̑ In actuality, I also love the MC. He's been through so much, even willing to sacrifice his life for our Chu Wanning, taking his place and letting himself become the now Taxian-Jun (。•́︿•̀。) he was just a child when he completely lost himself. Anyways, cant explain coz its been way too long since Ive read this. Anyways, I have a love and hate relationship with him. Lmao, I also thought I was the only one who called him a moron during the first half of the novel.

The plottwist was insane and immaculate. Wow.. just wow/ᐠ。ꞈ。ᐟ\

Anyways, I love this and really would recommend it!!!!!Lets go through excrutiating pain together♡♡♡ <<less

2ha isn't just pure angst. It has its lighthearted moments, and i've laughed quite a lot while reading it. But the angst comes early, just planting the seed in your heart, which begins to progressively grow and grow as the plot unfolds. Through reading the protagonist's thoughts and feelings, you gradually feel some sort of shift, and what was simple at first suddenly doesn't seem so easy. When the angst hits, it REALLY hits. Like, it's the type to make you gasp and choke out a... more>> "no".

i spent an entire night sobbing while reading the last few arcs. Meatbun writes complex relationships so well, especially MR's change of attitude towards CW throughout the novel. The romance doesn't feel rushed at all. The hatred and passion is so vivd, which makes MR and CW so special to me. It's hard to put their relationship into words, but they're definitely my favorite danmei couple.

i would advise readers to take their time and not rush reading, lest they miss important details of the plot. The plot towards the ending seems chaotic, and is heavy on the lore, so in order to avoid confusion, you should try not to binge quickly. <<less

Spent around a week to binge reading 2HA and think I was crying everyday while reading this lol. Chu Wanning definitely left a huge mark in me since I’m involved with danmei novels. I mean, look. Even his name is so pretty.

I got it when some people said they can’t handle this novel until the end. And I think this was one of the longest danmei but I felt worth it as I had a chance to explore the world of Mo Ran and Chu Wanning.

I have to admit, the author's writing style is really great! It's not only about how good her literacy, her ability to weave words, but also how she arranged the timeline and scenes into an interesting and well-written piece that makes this novel a noteworthy one.

There are already a lot of people listing the real horror of this novel: a story of how the rapist is sent to a happy end with the victim, because well the victim loves him, and the rapist repented, so it's a happy end.

The Gong... more>> is called a dumb Husky for misunderstanding his Shizun (Shou), and it's painful how his dumbassery hurt the Shou over and over again. I felt my chest tighten and I want to cry out so bad, during the time I read this novel, feeling injustice for the Shou, and really wanted to strangle the Gong so much.

In the final analysis, the novel's overall idea might not actually be good, but I can't deny the author's outstanding writing. <<less

Mind the content warnings.

I’m really conflicted about how to go about writing this review.

For starters, the first 150 chapters were brilliantly translated and so I have an idea about how masterfully the writer writes. Chapter 150 onwards I had to depend on a somewhat cleaned-up MTL and the essence of the story was completely lost. So, while I read it all the way till the end, I don’t quite know how to review this book.

I’ll divide it into two segments. The relationship and the story.

The relationship I will further divide into TXJxCWN and... more>> MRxCWN.

I was extremely uncomfortable with the non-con/dub-con between TXJ and CWN. The gratuitous descriptions of r*pe were unnecessary and oftentimes simply diversions.

I loved the relationship between Mo Ran and Chu Wanning. Mo Ran’s character development was masterfully done. The author wasn’t in a hurry to redeem him and I liked that. I grew to like the character over a period of time. Mo Ran isn’t an easy character to write. But the author has unraveled every side of him with unparalleled brilliance. The relationship between Mo Ran and Chu Wanning is heartbreakingly beautiful. It’s not a simple relationship of love. It involves two lifetimes of misunderstandings, sacrifices, pain, and gut-wrenching levels of angst that left me anxious to the point of tears.

Now, the plot.

The plot was interesting to a degree. At least up until the Rufeng Sect Wedding. After that, it got quite outlandish. I felt that the writer kept pulling rabbits out of her hat at every turn of the page in a quest to shock the reader. Most often than not, it didn’t hit the mark. Some plot twists/backstories were interesting. But a majority of them were simply unnecessary diversions and didn’t make any sense.

The whole Big Boss reveal was meh. And the reasons for ‘Big Bosses’ actions were even more outlandish. And there were innumerable plot holes. I didn't even read the extras!

I feel the need to say that once more chapters are translated, I might read chapter 150 onwards again. Because I feel a lot was lost in translation. <<less

Don't get the wrong idea from the cover. If you are okay with trigger warnings in the book, you are gonna love this so much! It is heavily angst, well-written characters and story. It is a beautiful yet painful journey of someone who committed mistakes and now seeking redemption.

Give it a chance and you will fell in love with this masterpiece. I cried, laughed, smile so much reading this. It was an amazing unforgettable ride of emotions and adventures. You will see their love blossom which is in my opinion wonderful to witness.
