Li Rong married Pei Wenxuan at the age of 18.

Li Rong used Pei Wenxuan’s family background to avoid disaster, and Pei Wenxuan used Li Rong’s identity as Princess to establish himself.

They married for political reasons, without the slightest bit of affection.

Later on, she lost herself in the midst of wine, song and dance. As for him, he had a home yet did not bother coming home because he already had someone in his heart…

Husband and wife for 30 years, yet nothing between them but power.

In the end, it was hardly surprising that someone turned them against each other, leading them to die under each other’s schemes.

However, when they woke up, they had actually returned to the year when they were 18 years old, returning to the most difficult time in their lives.

So Pei Wenxuan went to look for Li Rong.

“Does Your Highness feel that we should go through this marriage again?”

“Let’s do it…”

“Then this humble one must get rid of your ‘Guest Official’ first.”

“Do you think I’ll let your sweetheart off?!”

After a long wordless silence, Pei Wenxuan spoke again: “How about we bear with one another for the time being? In two years, when we each have power in our hands, you and I will divorce. From then on, if there are grievances, settle those grievances, if there are grudges, settle those grudges. What does the Princess think?”

Li Rong hesitated for a moment, and then said: “Fine, go ahead with it first…”

Later, Pei Wenxuan and Li Rong secured the power to control the Imperial Court. Seeing Li Rong write up the divorce letter at home, Pei Wenxuan looked left and right, considering the situation from all angles, then finally walked into the study. “The children are already this old, how about we keep living like this for a while?”

I read till chapter 44 and then skipped to the last 10 chapters.

I feel quite torn about this novel in that the characters are interesting and yet they can also be tiresome. The plot and flow are supposed to be realistic/ rational but it's overly dramatic and kind of implausible for the time period.

1) main characters (4/5) : the FL and ML are pretty likable and I do like that they feel like equals and they both contribute to each other and to their own success. What I found tiresome... more>> is that their thought process with each other goes in circles of hesitation, flirting, hesitation, warmth, hesitation, plotting together, hesitation, pushing each other to other people, jealousy, hesitation, more flirting. I do understand the rationale to some extent given their history but it did get kind of irritating occasionally. But on the whole I think this wasn't that much of a minus. So I guess the two of them are sort of still a great couple.

2) plot/ flow/ writing style (2/5) : first thing is the writing style. For a novel set in ancient China, the narration and dialogue are too colloquial and straightforward compared to other novels set in the same time period like the grandmaster strategist/ eight treasures trousseau/ tyrannical wang's beloved wife. It's not that bad but it's does reduce the vibe of the novel given the setting.

Secondly, the behavior and actions espoused in the book don't seem realistic in keeping with the timeline or even within the world created by the author. It's never explained how the princess as a female is able to accomplish the things that she does and wield the authority that she does. The novel is ultimately set in ancient China and it's not normal to have a female that is able to wield the power that she does (like yes it has happened in Chinese history but it's very rare and even if females wield authority it's normally behind the scenes). I'm not against her having so much authority but I feel that the way she was able to achieve this didn't make sense.

Spoiler

she was able to preside over an important case against a powerful family (the Yang clan) and set up a supervisory agency which both don't make sense because of the time period and the background that the author gave to her. if it's because she's supposedly a favored daughter of the emperor that also doesn't make sense because her father kept her at arms length enough that he wanted to marry her off to someone unthreatening or kill her. Why would he trust her and empower her just because she married someone who may or may not be a trustable pawn. Her husband literally only tried to enter the emperor's service and immediately he is trustworthy? But where's the basis for trusting the husband and shouldn't there be more of a trial period to truly trust him? And secondly she only married her husband for a very short period of time so why would he trust that her husband in a few days or weeks or months of marriage can turn her against her brother, mother and maternal family that she's known for 18 years. Unless she is very much trusted by him, it would make more sense for him to want her to be a spoiled useless princess rather than one that literally heads an organization that can investigate and influence the situation of other governmental organizations because she could also use it to help her brother (which she is) and maternal family

[collapse]

The actions of the surrounding characters also don't make much sense for the time period in that they're too overtly hostile and aggressive towards the FL and also by extension the ML who is her husband given their statuses as a part of the royal family and given her relation to the emperor, empress and the crown prince.

Spoiler

the whole Yang family attempt at kidnap and the subsequent chase was ridiculous. how could the Yang family be daring enough to try to so publicly kidnap the princess right after a public banquet with private soldiers riding around on horses in the middle of the imperial capital sent to conduct the kidnap. As a princess, as the eldest daughter born of the empress, her residence shld presumably be in a very prominent location within the capital where other nobles are so there should be soldiers regularly patrolling the area to safeguard said nobles. her retinue should also have lots of imperial guards, eunuchs and maids. So why on earth would the Yang family try to forcibly snatch her with their private army (instead of trying to secretly drug her or smth) in such a prominent location when her own retinue and the patrolling army should be able to protect her. The fact that she really had to run away was quite ridiculous to me given the above. It was literally Yang soldiers on horses attacking. How is the story set in a world where they wouldn't be caught immediately.

The ML's family punishing the ML by caning him to try to dissuade the princess from setting up the supervisory agency and the consequences of ML's family's actions also didn't make sense to me. Again, she's the eldest princess and as her husband, he's her consort and by extension, he's a part of the royal family (he's literally called prince consort). as a part of the royal family with the legacy in ancient China associated with protecting the dignity of the royal family, why would they be daring enough to publicly punish him in full view of his clan as well as the servants that presumably accompany them. The stated reason in the book for them to do so was that they wanted to publicly disassociate from him for the eyes of the other noble families. But what about offending the royal family and the emperor by hitting the prince consort? And they're not disciplining him for committing a crime or smth. They stated that they want to punish him because the princess set up a supervisory agency that was sanctioned by the emperor. Which is also like publicly and very loudly saying we don't agree with the emperor? Like if you've watched ancient Chinese dramas or read those ancient Chinese books or just read ancient Chinese history, how can a royal be publicly (yes it's at home but there were so many people present that if it were to be investigated properly, how can so many people keep it a secret??) hit by his own clan that isn't that powerful in defiance of an emperor's imperial edict when said emperor is still in charge of empire and not in some situation like the emperors that faced cao cao or sima yi. Like yes the emperor is fighting against the noble families, but he's still in charge enough to completely bring down the Yang family when he found enough evidence to do so.

[collapse]

so... in conclusion... I was somewhat disappointed by this book given that the premise and the reviews made me really excited. I still think the premise is great and the romance was pretty good but the execution of the political plot lines were pretty bad. <<less

I just finished reading it in MTL and really this novel is amazing! Every characters have their reasons and judgements for doing things. One of my top list of c novels involving palace politics and schemes. This novel made me happy and emotional at the same time. It was really a roller coaster ride but I was really happy it was HE. I really recommend everyone to read this, it is definitely worth it!

the princess and the ML can'tbe blamed for the outcome the last timeline no one really gets HE when power is exercised by asingle individual after a long time he or she is bound to become suspicious every characteris really fleshed out

Big spoilers

and it's revealed that her brother who became emperoris the one who schemed both to death everyone got their karma I guess it's reallya curse to be born into royalty

The whole story is beautifully realistic.

Ending may surprise everyone but still worth the read this novel makes you think how important mutual understanding and communication and having a common ground amongst ourselves is.

While we take some regrets and dreams to our grave we are actually missing out a probable bountiful future.

This book made me think we are all running frantically towards a future what we think is secure which probably won't turn out be.

Give it a read it will definitely give you food for thought. Definitely a standalone from this genre. <<less

With the rampant transmigration stories, this is one of those novels having its own unique plot. The usual intelligent/strong FL and ML yet there's always a flaw in them. I liked how that the MC's are not that OP, they are not untouchable per se. The characters have their own personalities and not just a 2D character. The flow of the story was really great with the comprehensible English Translation. There's only few translated novels be it korean or chinese novels that have rich English words in it like the... more>> Grand Princess. <<less

First time to write a review to a novel because I want to share that this is the best romance novel I have read. The depth of the story is amazingly written and conveyed by the author. The issues also reflects the reality of this world and makes you reflect about the complexity of human heart. I am happy about the character developments and how the characters can change their lives for the better by movig forward from their past mistakes. I am just amazed how the characters are so... more>> alive because of their vulnerability in the story. Im glad that it is a happy ending. Overall, I cant explain how beautiful the story is. It is my first time to be moved by a novel because how lifelike the emotions portrayed in the story. Just wow! And so amazed. First time to read a novel like this. <<less

Definitely one of my favorite of all time!

It is very creative, intriguing and fun to read. The leads are great, the plot is waven amazingly, the psychological state is written carefully, not abrupt or messy.

The ML has topped my list of most interesting ML. Smart and unique, at times a bit silly and is humane.

Hoping that this will become a manhua or even a drama!

I was fully prepared to give this a 4-5 star in the first 10-20%. This is a m/f romance and it is about the eldest princess who transmigrates to start her past life over again after her life ends tragically. This novel revolves heavily around politics, featuring a princess who becomes emperor, and a love interest who is the Princess Consort, etcetc.

What I liked: This author excels at writing the psyches of her characters. I haven't seen an author write so incisively and insightfully about people's behavior and motivations since... more>> priest. I thoroughly enjoyed the parts of the novel delving into any character's inner thoughts, feelings, and motivations. The characters' internal logic is very consistent, and I liked both protagonists very much. I found the chapters unpacking their unhealthy relationship behavior to be very rewarding as each character underwent genuine growth.

On to the bad lol. I stopped reading at about 40% and skipped to the end, and honestly don't feel like I missed that much. That's how draggy this book is.

1) while the characters were very consistent, the politics and the plot are just a mess lol. A lot of the plot developments don't make a lot of sense or contradict other previously established rules or the conventions of the time which other reviewers have mentioned. The politics also start to drag on after a while.

2) past chapter 40ish, the relationship was no longer slow-burn but just repetitive; it was just the same old relationship issues being dragged out for the sake of angst and melodrama, rinse and repeat for about 170 chapters.

For a rebirth story, the author turned the usual tropes on their head and it was very refreshing. Shoutout also to Shangguan Ya and Su Ronghua for their very interesting and thankfully no longer tragic romance. I also greatly appreciated that female characters were written thoughtfully and there were female friendships. <<less

This novel was amazing and refreshing. I loved the interactions of the protagonists, they were human and sincere. From the resentment of his past life, to confusion, fear to love. The author really did a good job of making the characters' personalities and showing their breaking points. Nobody here is perfect and that's what it's all about, learning from mistakes and being better with themselves and others. Here no character is really immature or mature, all their actions are driven by fear of rejection and after much effort they manage... more>> to overcome it.

I also really liked how the author deals with the subject of being a woman in a royal court, it's difficult and they always try to drag her down. But MC is strong-willed and receptive with many years of experience, they emphasize a lot how most of her actions are accepted by the ministers just because she has her brother the crown prince and her father the emperor behind her, and how she does everything possible to gain their own power and stand firmly before others.

About ML, I can only say: Where do I get one?!!!!! It's wonderful, I want someone to love me like this, to care about me, to understand me so well that just by seeing her they know how it feels. This man is simply too good to be true! He has a great personality development, he is honest with himself and accepts his mistakes, but not to please others, but to be better himself and to be honest with his thoughts and feelings.

This novel teaches you that: Communication is the key, being honest to your thoughts is the best way, and being honest with your feelings not only to expect something in return, but only for the fact of expressing it <<less

This novel is awesome, very well written, engaging, just love love it. So far the best Cnovel that i've ever read. The FL is strong in her own way and the ML is delicate and soft while still being 'manly'.

The politics is quite smart with few twist here and there. I like all the characters, there's no bad and good here only different views. There's no background characters, all of them feel alive with their own thinking and purposes. I even love Cui Yulang XD.

Pei WenXuan definitely my fav ML... more>> ever. I rarely like ML from Cnovel, but Pei WenXuan just hit different.

I know many people think Li Rong didn't deserve his love. LOL, even Li Rong herself think she didn't deserve him. But that is love.

I like that Mo Shu Bai always made her ML is the 'Bottom' one in the relationship.

If you want a smart historical josei look no further. <<less

I really enjoy this novel. Usually if people get mu*dered in their first life, the 2nd life is about revenge. This novel takes that spin it around because the FL doesn't really know who killed her. After everything has changed in her 2nd life, does she still want revenge?

There are some flaws to the characterization of main characters like FL and 2nd ML. But it didn't take away from the fact this was a good read.

I also like the fact that the chief instigator against them was a smart chess... more>> player, often giving them real trouble that they had to wiggle their way out of without arousing the suspicion of the emperor, who did not want them to work together. It's more suspenseful and thrilling with their twists and turns than the average brainless competitor like you see in Malicious Empress and most reincarnation stories. <<less

I stopped reading at chapter 10 not because the story is bad, the plot is interesting, the character development is also good, I'm too tired to follow people who have high egos making complicated stories that don't finish... They are too busy denying their feelings and looking for logical reasons to express their feelings of love

I have mixed feelings for this novel. It initially started as regular romance novel but then later developed into history book on people, emotions and conspiracy.

I didn't necessarily liked the leads they were flawed and corrupt but that's what kept me going to read further. With four main characters being reborn, it showed how they wanted to live in this life and what struggles they faced. But towards the end I felt it was too overwhelming and rushed. The author tried to potrait the "other/darker" side of the main leads... more>> and tried to justify each character and give justice to them. But I felt that the other "negative" characters were not justified. If our lead's darker side can be highlighted in good light and get a happy ending why not the "negative" characters. Li Cheng, Hua Le, Concubine Rou, emperor, Su Rong Qing, and many other deserved a happy ending atleast a little better life. <<less

I just finished it and I honestly don't know what to feel about it. One moment I wanted to drop it then I continue then find something out and I'm just like wow. My rate is either 3 or 4, I can't do 5 because there are parts that made me dissatisfied. It's so good but also overwhelmingly irritating because real human nature was written with it.

The first few chaps were so good I was literally squealing because its been so long since I've read a histo bg novel that... more>> is like malicious empress. Honestly, the first thought I have was that it would be like malicious empress but also lighter because of the summary. Well, I was wrong. It was heavier and consists of 60% politics and 40% romance. Politics is a big deal and also their past.

Moving on to the main CP.
Spoiler

They always say "trust each other, don't keep secrets from me so we won't deal with what we dealt with in our past lives" BUT though they are already together and are sweet to each other, it wasn't until near end that they learned to really really trust each other. My only take is why say that when you're just going to break the oath? There are some parts where I feel MC is too stubborn, why not take a step back when ML was showing her how devoted he is to her, then the next part there is an explanation why MC felt that way and then my dissatisfaction just dissolves. Everything that happens or what they're feeling is valid and has a reason.

[collapse]
Other than that, it was an a-okay romance. I absolutely loved the trope of MC and ML reborn or transmigration at the same place, I wish to read something like this again, only lighter haha.

The couples that were dead or was left with the point of no return in the last life all had happy ending dw!

ALSO ABOUT THE 2ND ML: SU RONGQING I was honestly worried after seeing translator's note. He wasn't dead. He escaped. It was vague but Shangguan Ya told SRQ's brother
Spoiler

that there is an escape tunnel something in the place he was in before it was burned down and the main CP also talked about why ML let him off instead of killing him.

Crazy good. One of my favorites. The MC was, of course, prideful, smart, and the ML was doting and smart too. Their only problems were trust problems, which, are of course, a cliché in this type of stories. They eventually get over it, of course. But it's very enjoyable, won't regret reading it.

Not sure why this novel has such high rating. I continued reading this in MTL and find it disturbing. The ML is insecure and not confident, but I do sympathize with him being in a relationship with "The Grand Princess". Anyone in that position will feel insecure also considering it is an arranged marriage of unequal statuses. I don't like the FL at all and find her arrogant and very unkind. I feel sorry for the ML and don't feel that "The Grand Princess" deserves him.

So far, it was full of court intrigues.

The characters action and mind were so mature and wise, up till currently translated chapter, they seemed to have everything under their control.

I hope there's no unnecessary drama or tragedy because of love entanglement with secret lover.

MTL ending chapters, a HE.

I don't really know how to write reviews but I have to let people know that this is a 10/10 novel that you absolutely must read. Words can't explain how much I love this novel. The characters were well written and everyone had something to contribute. I finished reading this and even though it's a happy ending my heart hurts so much. I'm in tears.

It's being a while since I read a historical novel this good.

I might come back and write a proper review later.

This review is particularly refering to the reviewer @greenHills.

This Review will have spoiler and won't be shed behind a spoiler tag so be warned.

A review shouldn't dwell too deep into the nuances of a story, especially when it can be extremely prejudiced but this once I will because this many people trying to mislead is not good.

Pei Wenxuan, the Husband, to Li Rong, the princess, is actually a pretty decent guy. As explained by Li Rong herself, he was a good man. They had a pretty good relationship. Things Pei... more>> Wenxuan did for her were no less than extraordinary

Now, Pei Wenxuan never cheated. He cared for his Ex Fiance/childhood friend because she is targeted in the hareme and would frequently face life threatening dangers. Qin Zhenzhen, his childhood friend is very divoted to the his Majesty Li Chuan, Li Rong's brother. Pei Wenxuan did what he did in expanse as a Friend and brother.

He put Qinzhenzhen on a pedestal because he himself was a very confused soul and Li Rong was not a very emotionally supportive person. Admitting that he liked Li Rong was something he couldn't for plenty of self imposed reasons.

Li Rong was so ready to cut him off forever that he couldn't possibly be encouraged to acknowledge how he really felt for her. There were many inhibitors but not enough support. For long he held onto the notion that he really liked Qin Zhenzhen because thats what he thought growing up and later it was just easier for him to do so. Loving the moon is easier and much more bearable than loving the next door girl who disgusts you and favors another boy.

Pei Wenxuan to Qin Zhenzhen was certainly not like Su Ronqing is to Li Rong. He never comforted her or wanted to spend unnecessary time with her. He had what people call misappropriation of emotions. Just becaused he thought he loved her doesn't mean he actually loved her and cheated with her emotionally lol. He didn't know what exactly it meant. Everybody said Qin zhenzhen would be his wife so he thought thats whst love is. He found himself duty bound to Help her and he did. That just how far his care went. He didn't prioritize her over Li Rong. Its just what Li Rong thinks. She is stubborn and hard to convince. Not exactly the chracter you can take the word of.

He took such good care of Li Rong that she actually thought he like both her and Qzz, otherwise he wouldn't have been such a good husband to her.

Her only reason to think that Pei Wenxuan liked QZZ was because he had said he couldn't forget about Qzz. This when Pei Wenxuan was still young and understood little about himself or the world. Li Rong's assessment was without substance and baseless. She was reading too much into stuff. Just like a percentage of readers who read this novel.

Now, Li Rong isn't your usual damsel in distress either. Compared to everyone else, she lead a pretty comfortable and luxurious life. Most of the other imp characters were either dead, their wives killed, had no social life, or were stuck in a sh*t hole. Li Rong had her concubines, 8-10 of those she favored at a time and called them guest officials. No comments on their relationships because I read nothing of detail on that front.

Pei Wenxuan was frankly like a virg*n (no he is not) no family and nothing to look forward to and lived in regret, resentment, and routine.

Now, I dont know why I am seeing so many people tryng to colour pei wenxuan as a toxic cheater man. Their relationship can have mistakes and consequences but never toxicity. It would end before it ever got to that. She is an imperial princess, he is her subject, everything can change but this alone won't. Li Rong would always have rank higher than his.

The supposed wrong didn't as much as hurt Li Rong as Pei Wenxuan had fallen in Li Rong's eyes.

But thats not why they can't tolerate each other. Pei Wenxuan was not a Rag doll who would eat it without barking back lol.

They simply were at cross roads and their twisted personalities didn't allow for trust in each other. They beat each other up. It wasn't because Li Rong was specifically bad to him or anything. They just had different opinions and ways to do things and frequently clashed in those matters. Pei Wenxuan just didn't have much to look forward to or be happy for. It's not Li Rong to blame. It just happened. It's one of the points of this stories. Downfall doesn't come from one place, all of it together brings about an avalanche.

Don't blame Pew Wenxuan, internal struggle is hard to make sense of. Its a misunderstanding, not betrayal. How can anyone say trying to help a friend in need is betrayal. If even that is wrong, pretty sure Pei Wenxuan would be justfied to act super petty because he was unfairly killed by Li Rong before they got regressed to past. <<less

An excellent Roller Coaster of historical rebirth novel - Not for revenge, but for understanding the relationship.

What an amazing way of justifying the characterization even though few of them are felt morally flawed. We get attached to those characters, makes us think like them too (from their steps / POV). Being a fan of sharp tongued dialogues, it was really easy to get attracted towards these leads.

One and only issue was "Lead couple's back and forth movements of understanding the relationship even though both of them are well aware of... more>> the care from the other!!" <<less
