In regards to the yearnings for women of the army chiefs from the barracks, if one were to summarize it in a sentence: The beauties in Jiangnan had long since gone.

Afterwards, he was made perplexed by that valiant and formidable looking female brigand, who dallied with women better than any man: Since when did the beauties in Jiangnan transform into such troublemakers?

Hello, this is Translator Wook of the Wook's Teahouse (now of Travis Translations as per March 25th) . If you're reading this, I assume you're somewhat interested in reading this series. Thank you very much for your time.

I will be providing you with a more thorough and hopefully spoiler-less review. This will be my last review update for this novel.

Some warnings by myself.
1. A light romance comedy. Don't take everything too seriously. You've been warned.
2. Setting is somewhere between Ming - Qing Dynasty. The country condition, the city names, and official positions are based on reality.
3. Female lead is a smart, goofy, capable character. She cleans her own mess, which is rare in webnovels, where for the most part, author lets the male lead does that for them. Male lead starts off as your typical stern, charismatic, cold character. However, he is not overbearing and forceful even until the end of the story. He respects the female lead enough to let her do things her own way (whenever he's not busy rubbing his head for the messes she creates), and I really appreciate this kind of story.
4. There will be business conflicts on the later part of the story.
5. A happy ending.

Comedic undertone in almost every chapter. The characters are fun and bright, each with their own personalities.
I mean it when I said Don't take everything too seriously. Keep in mind that this is meant to be a relaxing read, just enjoy the flow and laugh once in a while, as there is nothing that is too absurd anyway. Still makes more sense than some total Mary Sue characters from some novels.
This is for readers who are tired and need a break from the typical face-slapping or palace intrigue drama with too many evil concubines, empress dowagers, and dog emperors.

What keeps me going is the curiosity of how the stories will end. What will happen to the business since female lead is a woman, and sooner or later she will have to marry or something. Then once the male lead's identity is known, that curiosity only increases.

All in all, since everyone has their own taste, I can only say, give this a try, and see you in my teahouse!

"Let us be kind to each other as the heart is already fragile, life is already hard, and this translator still wants to live a few more years."
Wook, signing out.

A nice and fun reading 🌈

MC is a transmigrator, I think, because she lamented about not having a mobile in ancient times? But this story is ALL about how she survives her world dressing up as a male. Not a mention at all about whether she really came from the modern world or not~

FL is quirky and mischievous. She's like the nice and sweet version of Dennis the Menace (which I'm pretty sure not many knew whom Dennis is~ oh well.. Talk about feeling ancient myself 😅).

ML has a lot... more>> of rivals since the FL is surrounded by males 24/7 for her whole life!

I enjoyed reading this, especially when reading the translated part~ Translator Wook from Wook's Teahouse does a marvellous job! Translation is top notch~ so keep up the good work 👍🏻🏆

Have fun reading! 🤳🏻 <<less

Really enjoying this one. So far, it's got good pacing, the comedy isn't heavy handed and the suspension of disbelief hasn't been shaken (though I'm quite curious how our MC keeps using modern jargon, like psychology...) In some gender twisted stories, our heroine is able to best men with strength but in this one, we haven't seen anything totally unbelievable yet. I love the personalities and am looking forward to some lightbulbs going off as everyone's secrets get revealed.

Translation work is excellent, story is a fun adventure so far. I’m up to chapter 17, and if you were holding off because the story didn’t have many chapters, it’s already well into the first act. The translator does large chunks that feel like entire, substantial chapters at a time.

So far we know more about the dynamic, sparkling female lead, but I hope the male lead starts to show his true self a bit more as well.

Sleazy, harmless, ne’er-do-well buddy is a highlight. I mean, why do we always get... more>> the silent, “En.” types in these novels? I would take the goofball a time or two. Just sayin’. <<less

I am probably in the extreme minority here, but I don't like ship the main couple. ML is an uppity man who is well meaning but personally off-putting. He seems to consider himself doting but it comes off as patronizing instead, because he's mostly cold and disapproving. ML is not likeable and he has no chemistry with MC. His advantages over all other potential love interests is his high status and wealth. And the fact that he has already been labeled the Male Lead by the author. Sure, he's considerate. But he isn't alone in that aspect, and consideration isn't enough to make two characters compatible.
Spoiler

ML goes out of the room saying he's gonna propose marriage to the MC's dad. MC can't follow cuz she's on bedrest. At this point in the story, she had just found out he knew her gender and had ZERO romantic thoughts about him at all. She says "Do you think I'm willing to marry you?!", which the ML hears from outside the room. He then smiles thinking, "What a naive girl."

[collapse]

There's also the fact that he seems really hung up on MC's being a girl. It wouldn't have been odd if the worldbuilding emphasized the state of women's behaviors and rights at the time, but nope. No one else who knows MC's secret dwells too much on her gender, but ML thinks about it whenever she shows a skill or action considered masculine. An example would be the scene where he asks the MC to draw him a map of the city they're staying at. He's amazed at her precision and thinks she would've been a great scout for the army but that "it's a pity she's a girl."

I think I'm around halfway through the story already. With this setup, any action the author connives to get MC to fall head over heels for the crappy ML will just feel like plot convenience to me.

Like I used in another review, I start with one of Mulan's speeches. A legend of 1500 years ago that was defending the ideal thoughts of equality of men and women. She said:

The male hare* wildly kicks its feet;
The female hare* has shifty eyes,
But when a pair of hares* run side by side;
Who can distinguish whether I in fact am male or female?
hare* - a kind of rabbit

This paragraph tells that although there exist differences between genders, you cannot distinguish male and female when they are "running side by side". Figuratively, men and women can't be different when fighting together for the victory of the same ideals.
Source: Victor Yeh

I used that Mulan's speech before, to criticize the difference in power between men and women in Ancient Times.

Ancient women were narrow minded because they spent their whole lives locked in Harems in the back palaces, scheming and fighting for the favor of powerful men, since in the end they can only become Concubines, Empresses or Nobles's Wives, while ancient men, could deal with the broad world, being able to change and influence the future of Empires, by becoming Generals, Ministers, Powerful Nobles or Rich Merchants and even Emperors. Although realistic, this reality isn't pleasant to read at all...

But this novel is such a surprise, because it doesn't have the stereotype ancient female character fighting petty battles in the harem! This is the best novel ever with the best heroic female lead and for that reason I really, really fell in love! 🥰

Spoiler

The female lead Bai Shiqi, is the embodiment of Strong Ancient Chinese Women, like the Legend of Mulan. Despite her not being a war general like Mulan, she was still heroic and valiant as one.

Bai Shiqi was exactly my type of female lead: a valiant and heroic beautiful girl, righteous and just, but also extremely naughty and tomboyish... maybe that can be described as a perfect Mary Sue female character, that can easily solve everything without the help of any men, but even if she is a Mary Sue, it doesn't bother me at all, because Bai Shiqi is so funny, cute, enchanting and likable 🥰

She wasn't born to be locked in a harem and have the miserable fate of ancient women. She was a courageous and just young woman that was born to wander freely around the world and inspire people to follow her.

She would go on adventures through rivers and oceans to make a living, befriending and enchanting all types of people when having fun by pretending to be a playboy, while righteousness fighting pirates to protect the weak, and when discussing about politics, always having a broad mind that always thinks about the justice for the commoners. Her only defect, was that she was too perfect and was impossible not to fall in love with her... 😌

I'm not going to give a bunch of spoilers like I normally do in my reviews... but I just want to say that not only the female lead is pleasing, but all the characters of the novel! From the female lead's cute parents, to the nice concubines of her father, to her funny best friend, to the serious male lead and the good hearted second male lead, and even the conflicted and lost villain...

[collapse]

I really, really recommend this novel, especially if you admire characters like Mulan! ☺️

I love the MC here but as another reviewer has stated, the ML is kinda lacking. It's one of those where I feel, there is no ML worthy of her!! I must say, the writer is very talented in writing dialogue! Albeit difficult to follow since they use a ton of idioms. Personally I found it difficult to finish, but not a bad book. I'd rather recommend Refusing to Serve Me? Then Off With Your head!

It was oke. 3.5/4.

It was fun but the male lead was kind of boring. We even saw more of the second male lead's past than the male lead himself. It seemed that he had no real ambition anymore after getting injured. Everything was just: following the FL and trying to get her to marry.

Even after trying I didn't seem to find something that would make me like him.

Also, we never really saw a romantic development from the fl. It was just: marry after seeing that her freedom wouldn't be influenced.... more>> I wouldn't mind if it happened in the beginning (then we can see her falling in love slowly after marrying) but this happened at the end. Really not satisfying. <<less

Fun adventure times but feeling a lil lonely in the romance department (read up to around ch 20-30). FL is pretty independent in general though which is cool to see. Boring romance but hoping it'll pick up soon! Also the translations are great.

I finally started reading this one, which has been sitting in my list for a while, and what a blast. I love the characters and story, I greatly enjoy the shifting POV, and the translation is very good. I already knew this author vi their other novel Refusing to Serve Me? Then Off With Your Head! (which is amazing) and I'm definitely not disappointed with this one. I hope I get to read more of their stories in the future... and hopefully translated by you guys as well!
