As the grandmaster of demonic cultivation, Wei Wuxian roamed the world, hated by millions for committing acts of necromancy. Overthrown by the powerful clans he had attempted to subjugate, Wei Wuxian is supposedly killed by his shidi in order to save the cultivation world.

Restored to life in the body of Mo Xuanyu, the local cut-sleeve lunatic, in order to exact revenge on his abusive relatives, Wei Wuxian quickly finds himself spiralling back into his old life when he’s taken away by the cold-hearted, stern, and ultimately quite boring Lan Wangji – who might be harbouring warmer feelings than contempt. Perhaps of the…romantic kind?

But despite his new beginning, Wei Wuxian begins to unravel a decade and a half long mystery that is set to undo the very fabric of the cultivation world as they know it.

A mysterious, action-packed thriller of a ride, this is a journey you won’t want to miss!

This is the first BL novel that I read and tho novel that made me who I am now..... Bl fan :3

this story have like good details on every plot and they gives the emotions a real like feeling.

after I read this I quickly became obsessed with it. so everywhere I see red and white blueish I sorta cried.... it's too beautiful..

funny tho, the first time I discovered it. it was an anime and I was like what is this, seems intresting, why is there corneto ads. then I realized... more>> months later that it had shounen ai tags and like.. now it's getting more interesting. so I found out it was a novel which lead me to where I am now :3.

I'm also a fan of their drama ' the untamed ' tho I haven't watch those, I still like Wang yibo and Xiao zhan.

anyway it's good tho it's probably too much of like cultivation stuff that some people might get confused. <<less

This was the first danmei novel I ever read, and was the beginning of my long downwards spiral into BL novels. I DEFINITELY recommend this, and I love the authors’s other novels too!!

It doesn’t focus so heavily on the romance, but you end up not minding at all (well, for me) because you’re just so into the story; you can’t wait for certain characters to find out about some HUGE secret, and you anticipate their reaction. More romantic scenes get sprinkled in near the end of the novel, but for... more>> the most part, it focuses more on the past; of what happened to the characters for the present situation to be so crazy. We see how Wangji slowly fell for our Wuxian, and it’s so satisfying!! All in all, I just adore this so much!! <<less

MDZS was my introduction to Chinese novels and specifically, this genre and I'm glad it was because for one, it made me want to learn more about the genre itself and I started reading more and more Xianxia. I loved it so much right from the start that I finished all of it in three days instead of writing my life and death master's thesis... And then, every adaptation of it in the same week. I became obsessed and I'm not even ashamed.

Even though the novel has a lot of... more>> points one can criticize, it is, nevertheless, a great work and I applaud MXTX for the plot, the details, the complex characters and the atmosphere she created. <<less

First Chinese novel I ever read. I read it when the manga was first starting. I found the manga first I think and then the anime and finally liked it sm I decided to read the novel. Lemme tell u that I thought I would never read online novels like cuz I have relatives who do and some r like 1000 chapters and I just can’t lol. But I still decided to read mdzs and I don’t regret it.

The story was great and I loved how it wasn’t mainly focused... more>> on the romance between the MC and ml, that’s what really did it for me tbh. The plot is great this is such an interesting story. Also great world building, great characters great everything. Mxtx’s stories are just 👌 So yea this would definitely be a 4.5-5 to me so ye :3

MC is rlly funny and sweet and his turn to basically the dark side lol is interesting and then how when he’s revived he’s nice again ahhh so good. ML has an emotionless blank face but rlly cares for MC and he’s so cute too ahh skjsks. <<less

What else can I say that have not been said before? Nothing, because almost every other comments have praised this story already and all I can say is that it is deserving of all it.

The characters were all fleshed out and even the villains had backstories that make it hard for you to hate them because really, it makes you wonder if a single person had been kinder and warmer to them and led them on the right path, perhaps they would not have become who they were. The worldbuilding... more>> was also good and the characters all had a layer to them that you had to slowly peel back as the story unfolda to understand them and their motivations.

Although this wasn't the one that got me into reading BL, it is one of the memorable ones that have let me realize that love can really come in all shapes and forms. I love how it showed different types of love and not just romance.

This made me tear up, get angry, feel happy, laugh at the secondhand embarassments and feel sad and frustrated at times. This was an enjoyable story and one that I will not tire of reading again if given the chance. <<less

My all time favorite BL Novel with Happy Ending. Must read. It contains mystery/suspense, supernatural, angst moments, comedic moments and mature contents (more towards the end and extra). Do read this novel if you haven’t read it yet.

Everything’s a positive. Nothing to say that hasn’t already been said about the wonderfully bittersweet MC/ML and the other couples. Nonetheless, let’s once again praise MXTX’s meticulous work in wrapping up plot lines. Every character that is introduced with a name and purpose will inevitably have a story that is neatly tied up. All packages are properly wrapped in this story one way or another (and tragically or satisfyingly) without any bothersome loose ends, so really it’s just a matter of whether the themes and styles of character development is... more>> to your taste.

There’s too much reliance on flashback as far as story telling technique goes, and if the frame narrative is to be so thin, why not just start the story at the point of the flashback’s beginning? But that’s regardless a matter of taste and since I don’t read this in the original Chinese, there’s not a thing I can say about writing style other than that I find the balance of humor and intrigue in perfect ratio. Objectively, regarding planning of story arcs and character subplots, there’s nothing I can complain about other than to say perhaps I didn’t like this character’s sad ending or that couple’s sad ending because I’m weak for cheesy conclusions where almost everyone can be happy after a long period of strife. Still, everything is sound in technical execution so don’t falter in reading this. There will be a neat bow for everything, but you’ll have to persevere through some heartbreak.

Truly a flagship of indulgent but careful storytelling. <<less

MY FAVOURITE NOVEL EVER!

Honestly, it's so damn good that I ended up reading this 3 times. It never fails to make me impress.

Firstly, the character Wei Ying is so well written. He is a man that sticks to his principles no matter what happens. The novel also shows how he deals with various situations and how he reacts to different people. You can see that he treats the people he loves with the utmost care and concern to the point where I just want to CRY AND HUG HIM cause... more>> while he cares for others, who care for him.

Secondly, the character Lan Zhan is OMG like the best boyfriend and husband one can ever ask for. Other than him being slightly less talkative, he practically shows his love through his actions. He is a very dedicated man. Another man that sticks to his principles. I think because of his lack of expression and like him being unable to properly show and say how he feels, it causes many misunderstandings.

Thirdly, the story is just very well written. The details are all planned well and there are hints everywhere throughout the novel. It just makes me want to continue reading and time really flies when I was reading this novel. I literally binge read this in like less than 3 days because I just couldn't stop myself. While reading this novel, you should definitely prepare a box of tissues so that you are prepared for it. While reading, I just can't stop crying because I feel SO FKING SAD for my dear Wei Ying and Lan Zhan. Those 2 babies deserve the best in that world but people just urgh. I think this novel also touches on like things that the people in our society are experiencing too. For example, being misunderstood and people trying to step on each other to rise to the top? Anyways, this story deserves a 100/100 because it's the only novel that I can read for 3 times. I ended up watching the drama and the animation. I also listened to the audio drama and watched the manga. I'm still in love with this story. I really really love Wei Ying and Lan Zhan. They are like my favourite couple out of every novel I've read from. I RECOMMEND THIS TO EVERYONE OUT THERE!!! DON'T MISS OUT ON THIS BECAUSE IT'S SO AMAZING THAT YOUR MIND WILL BE BLOWN :) <<less

I truly love this novel. I can't get over it even after I finished last year. This novel will bring you into a roller coaster of emotions. This was the very first Bl novel i've read and it took me by surprise and left me in awe (crying).

Still, I truly recommend this novel with y utmost sincerity and and without a doubt this is clearly one of the best Bl novels out there that I've read. It got me hooked with no escape. True Love with WANGXIAN.

One of my favourite novel. I really love the story and I am totally obsessed with anything related to MDZS. I have already watched the drama, anime and read the novel and manhua (only audio drama is what I should listen to now)

Founder of demonic cultivation is a novel every one should read. I hope you won't drop it because of the flash backs or the slow romance as you are gonna miss a lot. Those flash backs play very important role in the plot, yeah at first... more>> it's hard to read the first chapters as plot confuses you due to lack of knowledge about the characters but I promise you after you keep on reading it, all the characters will unfold with details about them.

One thing for sure when reading this novel you will shed buckets of tears.
Spoiler

family members death, false accusation, framing, painful and sad past and many other tragic things

[collapse]

What I love about this novel is how the author has portrayed the society. The author has made that very realistic (and you will want to strangle some characters when you go on reading.) And the plot twist at the ending chapters will blow your mind.

Talking about the characters, I think the author did a great job on portraying them. Many characters will hold a special place in your heart.
Spoiler

even two of the villains

[collapse]

Plus the couple are so cute. WWX is such a dumbass when it comes to love (you find will out later why) but it's cute. After the reincarnation of WWX, LWJ always stays by his side and believes in WWX without ever doubting him because he regrets not doing so 16 years ago T - T (where can I get a LWJ for myself)

My not so helpful review ends here. I really hope whoever comes to read this novel won't drop it. Plus I hope you will check out other versions of the novel like the anime "Mo Dao Zu Shi", it's live action drama " The Untamed" and the manhua and audio drama. <<less

Another great novel I have read which has left me speechless to the point that I sometimes go back and reread my favorite parts.

The novel is another masterpiece of MXTX and I don't need to explain about it's popularity.

There is sadness, angst, fluff, comedy - It contains everything.

... more>> The one thing I love about this novel is that it keeps jumping from present and past which lets my mind be fresh and I can keep guessing.

Though there are some plot holes which are never fully confirmed, Its truly a good novel to read.

So don't skip the novel and start reading.... <<less

Overall: 4/5

Preface: I watched the anime first and was up to date on the manhua before starting to read the novel (although I did wait ~1 year so that things weren't super fresh in my mind). Drawing comparisons between the novel and especially the anime is inevitable. I did find my enjoyment of the novel increase significantly once I reached parts that the anime had not covered yet--in part because the later novel chapters were more action packed/the plot lines were converging, but I can't deny that knowing what was... more>> going to happen decreased my overall enjoyment of the first half of the novel. Unfortunate.

Story: Cultivation setting. The overarching conflict is cleverly thought out. The story starts off with MC being forcibly reincarnated into the present time after dying 13 years prior but also covers his adolescence, his development in his adoptive sect and interactions with ML/ML's sect, the rise and fall of various sects, and the scheming that culminates in him being labeled as "evil" and then backstabbed (unfortunately in many, many flashbacks; see critiques below). The MC and ML progress through seemingly unconnected events, reveal the decade-long conspiracy that led to MC's death, and achieve redemption for MC.

I do have to give kudos for how the villain was portrayed: he is irredeemably a twisted/selfish SOB, but I felt sympathetic towards him in the end.

MC: The shou. The shining star of this novel. A talented cultivator of the righteous path as an adolescent, he then conquers what should have been his bad ending by entering the path of demonic cultivation, with a legacy where present day so-called righteous cultivators still use and covet his demonic path inventions all while slandering him as the Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation. Under a façade of mischievous arrogance and shameless flirting/trolling, MC never strays from his strong moral compass despite falling off the conventional righteous path.

ML: The gong. A rather stereotypical cold, calm, and collected ML that is OP. His affection for the MC is revealed in rather contrived scenarios (and am I the only one who feels that Wen Ning gets mistreated/taken for granted/is cannon fodder??) but this is forgiven in 1) how quickly ML recognizes MC after the reincarnation and why and 2) his absolute reliability and devotion towards the MC.

Relationship development: The MC flirts with and trolls the ML in both the past and present but doesn't realize ML has feelings for him (and vice versa) until ~80% through the novel. Then things quickly escalate. There are explicit smut scenes in the extras.

Critiques: Overall, I would give Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation a 4.5 for intent but 3.5 for execution. Would I still recommend it? Yes.

There are expositions of "telling rather than showing" that drag. And conversely, there are other scenes where the author attempts to show something but the writing falls slightly short and need more in order to make a full impact/convey what the author was trying to show.

And of course, the flashbacks. Oh god. The transitions are difficult to follow. Even after watching the anime and reading the manga (ie having a good grasp of characters and plot), I would still get confused at the beginning of a chapter before realizing a flashback had occurred. And sometimes the author would write a mini-flashback for 3-5 paragraphs within a chapter.

This review may sound negative. I still highly recommend it as the MC and plot outshine any disappointment in storytelling execution. If you're confused during a scene cut, ask yourself if you just started a flashback. Oh, and watch the anime! It is gorgeous. <<less

This is it. My bible. I started this way back in mid-2017. Never looked back. The writing is so good, the development of each character is *chef's kiss*. Only flaw is that it has too many flashbacks I got a headache from keeping track LOL. I read this way before official translations started so I got multiple migraines from reading this back and forth in Chinese to see where the flashbacks happened and what the heck happened.

WWX and LWJ are also too h**ny for their own good someone please censor... more>> them, thank you. <<less

I can't fully express my love for this amazing story. I only found out about this story little over a month ago and now I can say with 200% confidence that I am possessed by this story ??

The plot, the twists and turns, the chemistry between the main characters, the backstory of each character, every single paragraph is so well written that I'm questioning myself why didn't I read this story before.

The narrative style and the backstory of each character is so interesting and essential for the story itself that... more>> can't find part of the story unnecessary or boring. I can't even hate the main villain because of his backstory, It has never happened to me before, like ever since I've started to read books!!!

Though it's a fantasy genre but it has romance, comedy, mistry etc in it which make this story more enjoyable. I loved how the relationship between the two main characters bloomed, slowly but surely. I am kinda impatient type of reader. If I see that the building process of the main characters relationship is slow, I slowly start to loose my interest. But it was deferent with this story. I didn't lose my interest because I wasn't bored. It kept me busy by giving me interesting stuffs and incidents.

One more thing that I loved about this story that it is super hilarious ??. HILARIOUS, yes, capital letter hilarious. I never expected to read this much hilarious incidents and dialogues in this story. I was laughing like a crazy person while reading the funny dialogues and parts ??. Not to mention that the MC is so SHAMELESS that sometimes I myself wanted to slap him hard. I sometimes felt bad for his soulmate because he was too much to handle.

I can't write reviews, so this is just my feelings about the story and how it captured my mind and soul. I want to recommend it to anyone who loves to. It's a perfect fit for someone who loves different types of flavor in one story <<less

Scenes between the MC and ML are just so heartwarming considering all of the things they've gone through.
