Notes:

  • Taking off a star because the ending feels quite abrupt, and there seems* (in my opinion) to be some matters left open/not dealt with properly or handled with much care or dropped off or just disappeared into thin air.
  • The story was quite detailed. It's good if you're into world-building/organic character progression, but bad if you just want to go right into the action. This is also why the ending feels quite jarring given the great detail in the earlier chapters and the detailed way that earlier issues were resolved/closed.
  • Speaking of action, if you're into face-slapping and hair-pulling numbers, then this story will leave you a bit empty in that regard (there are scenes with that but they are very few and very much in line with the plot).
  • There are side stories which help push the main plot and actually draw some parallels with the main couple's story---this may be quite tiring for some readers who want to focus on the main couple.
  • The MC does not always win (or if she does some of the wins may not be complete) or is she unbelievably purely good (she's also human, thus she shows her limits as well), the ML isn't always the avenging angel/dashing hero who saves the day (he does at times even put the MC in danger in the process of upholding justice for her), and the villain (surprisingly) is actually quite understandable (up to a certain point that is), the side characters are also believable (i.e., they have their understandable prejudices which colour their decisions).
  • What I like about this is that the MC didn't turn vengeful or change her character a full 180 compared to her past life she's still basically the same, only smarter and less gullible/naive. It also helps that unlike in other rebirth stories where the reborn character suddenly develops some omniscient/omnipotent complex,
    Spoiler

she takes everything as it happens and is sensible enough to realise that her rebirth may not actually change any outcomes for her.

    [collapse]
  • The ML (present timeline) is not quite despicable either---questionable at times, yes. His progression was understandable,
    Spoiler

and he didn't switch falling in love with the MC all of a sudden. He fell out of love with his former love gradually (which other people may find off-putting). And he also struggled when he realised he was falling for his wife. He didn't have the grovelling episode which I badly wished he had like his cousin but since he didn't get reborn he has no idea how much he neglected the MC in her previous life.

    [collapse]
  • Some gripes:
    Spoiler

I wish the Mother-in-law could have seen her niece's duplicitous actions gradually over time, and have the realisation for herself, rather than everything being laid out to her. In the end, she still has that soft spot for her niece and still explains her actions are merely due to being 'muddled.'

Pretty realistic approach to the rebirth/second chance-trope in ancient china. Both MC and ML are pretty surpressed by the neo-confucianist social norms of those times (filial piety, rules for women, respect elders/parents/inlaws etc) and can't act too much out of line like the protagonists of many other novels of simmilar type, which many readers have interpreted as the MC and ML being weak willed or easily bullied, which in turn lead to the lower rating of this novel, I don't think thats the case though and this is just a... more>> novel where social conventions are taken really seriously

I think it was a pretty good read if you're a fan of ancient china inner-courtyard drama.

Translation was professional, however the last 60 or so chapters are paywalled but some of the better mtl's I found are 80-90% understandable, much better than average mtl's. <<less

Oh my thoughts on this novel are so conflicted... LOLOL. On one hand, I really like that it’s so character-centric, on the other hand it’s so mentally draining with the constant hit or miss drama! Anyway, I digress, the main premise is that the FL, an abandoned wife who was forsaken by her husband who had a childhood sweetheart, is reborn. When she is reborn, she wakes up in a sedan, so it’s too pre to back out. All she can do is head straight into the pit that led... more>> to her despair and death in her first life. She has no special powers or skills, and she’s not really all that brave. Still, she musters up enough courage to present a one year contract with her new husband (the ML, yes! The ML) : Fake couple, after one year they can divorce so that he can marry his scheming childhood sweetheart.

Despite her foreknowledge, the FL doesn’t have much advantage. She suffers both wins and losses, and will be dragged through time and time again until literally the end of the novel. This isn’t really a romance novel, so don’t read it for that. Instead, I think it’s better to read it for the picture it paints in regards to the people and culture at the time.

This is Ancient China and there are strict traditions to follow. This novel highlights that very clearly. It’s all internal house matters as well. Covering not only the FL and ML, but also the ML’s complex wealthy family and the FL’s small and poorer family. In any case— Don’t read this expecting to have a good time, it’s very frustrating and the characters aren’t likeable! Read it for the complex characters instead! They’re not likable, but they’re more realistic than most. The author gives a clear reason for everything that they do, so even if you don’t like them, it’s easy to care about what happens next.

The drama, while frustrating, is interesting as well. It’s usually never boring, though some parts I did skip. As for the TL, the chapters pst 260 are locked and the MTL is unreadable... I personally only quickly skimmed through the last chapters (and thank god, cause if I read it, I think my opinion would have lowered by a lot, the ending is ridiculous). I’m only counting the first 260 chapters for this review, in any case.

RATING: 3.85/5

Got to say, the novel really is well written. Can’t say I dislike the author’s worldbuilding and character development. It’s undeniably not a favorite, but it kept me reading till the very ‘end’. <<less

It was a good story in the beginning but later it's become so frustrating slow
the action of the evil character IS repetitive and so unreasonable it will make you scream ( (WHAT IS THE REASON??)) all the time

The real true evil character here in the story in my opening is the MIL (THE MOTHER IN LAW)
The MC and the ML are OK

the ML get a lot of bad review even thought he is good guy and he tried to help the MC (his help is useless but at least he tried) personally I wish the MC could somehow ended up with the ML friend this will be great and will show the ML family how great our MC is UNFORTUNATELY THIS NEVER HAPPEN

I agree with the other reviewer that this novel is unique because there is no vicious MC with revenge plots and no sudden dramatic change for MC's personality in her second life, and I like this novel for that. Overall plot so far is not that great but passable for me, just the usual drama in a household with annoying love rival and not supporting in law family.

I actually like the story at the start and always been waiting for the new chapter to be release. Now, I have been reading it until the current chapter but it just keeps repeating, predictable, the same problem and stuff like that there is no improvement anymore. I am quite disappointed and sad but I will still keep reading it and would like to finish the story.

It's a really good rebirth story. I agree that the originality is the down-to-earth family and environnement. The Author was really good at describing the life there. The weigth of fillial piety and the unfavourable position of women at the time.

MC and ML can be frustrating sometimes because they have to let go of grievances for family harmony. It's especially true because they are the leaders of the family, they have to be role model and always better than expected.

Personnaly I like most of the characters. The only thing is... more>> that some of them don't learn and don't change, for me it's a bit irrealistic and sad.

Spoiler

Shi Yumei... She is my most hated character. She's arrogant, wilful, jealous, never-learn. She was well described but it's too much sometimes. When Sang Yufei and Shi Lian came back from marriage, after hurting her sister, after trying to slap MC,... So many times she has been disrespectful and too far but she got practically nothing. In my opinion if her mother can't be strict, her brother should do it in her place. It's irrealistic that at her age, they can pass her mistakes as cute tanthrums... Especially when honor and face are important.

And I say that because Gu Fangzi is smart and cover her track (Miss I-got-a-good-excuse-sob), it's hard to punish her but not Shi Yumei who shows her temper at every turn (inside and outside). That's why I can't understand that for 300 chapters she got no real punishment.

Gu Fangyi at the end. The moment she tried to kill MC and died was a bit too much. I feel like she's not obsessed at this point but dumb. Many times her obsession was weird. She knew he doesn't love her anymore, he proposed another way like 3 times and she just can't register and take the no return point. It's strange, the first time okay, but after? And she wants revenge, why not try by marrying someone more powerful?

[collapse]

One point I don't understand is Zhao Qi

Spoiler

This character is a bit useless.

She nearly drown, okay... That reinforced their love, destroyed mommy oposition and expulsed the sticky cousin, after more than 250 chapters I can say that's the best move Gu Fangzi did: three birds with one stone (should have done that earlier).

But the side story with Zhao Qi and her mother, or when he comes back to threaten and kidnaps to become later the godbrother, nope I don't like it. She could have simply been rescued in a bad shape so she couldn't come back earlier. Simple and efficient. If the man who rescued is in love with her, he could have yes come back to HELP in the lawsuit and ask for her to be part of his life by becoming the godfather of the child. That much more believable and less cheap drama I think.

I don't understand why the author wrote like that. Gu Fangzi can still create rumors if the child is conceived just after anyway. I would have prefered to have chapters on the child.

[collapse]

That's the main reason I can't pull full mark because the end felt weird. Like a mob character got too much importance in the end for me. <<less

Started out decent with an MC, full of gumption, trying to make a space for herself in a household that it's completely hostile to her... though at some point, the story went overboard with the white-lotus act of the rival, and every new person joining hands, as usual, against the MC...

It's supposed that women were to stay at home, but when it came to the antagonist, ... more>>
Spoiler

as an unmarried lady living in a relative's house, she's suddenly so OP that she can scheme so much, hiring and bribing so many people so as to harm MC from her residence!

And towards the end, story went absolute bonkers,

with that General's son getting involved with MC... he was so crazy for her, wanting to marry her and adopt her child, and then ended up becoming her sworn brother!!

Idiocy.

It is very indicative from the point of view of the structure of the society of ancient Asia and specifically China. And the behavior of the main character from this point of view is also understandable - after rebirth, she initially sets boundaries precisely so that her husband breaks them, because a divorce will hit her family's reputation hard. She is a normal young woman of her (!!!) era, who wants a quiet family life and the status of marriage. And not the endless problems with the "great love" of... more>> the husband and the bad quirks of the s*upid mother-in-law.

BUT!!! To the modern reader, this seems illogical and s*upid whining. The modern reader, accustomed to the current rights and opportunities of a woman, can hardly understand the logic of the main character - we live in a different time and in a different society. We can get a divorce, send a s*upid mother-in-law, move out, make a scandal in front of people and just tell the older generation directly what we don’t like and what to do with their desires. It won't ruin our reputation. All this is not the heroes of the novel. And the European reader is faced with another problem - for him all this is an alien cultural layer. As a result, we have a product for internal use - the Chinese understand it easier. This story has some value as a guide in understanding what was called the "inner courtyard" - useful for writing your own stories or preparing for different games in different ancient Chinas, but from the point of view of the novel... we are too far from the heroes. We find it difficult to understand them psychology and motivation. Wasting time, if you just want to read a book is idiotic. It was useful to me, but I still regret wasting my time. And most of the characters are not likable. In addition, they are quite cardboard. Even adjusted for the fact that half of them are very young by today's standards - these days they would be schoolchildren or students. <<less

I haven’t decided yet if I like it or not. There were parts that I did like and there were parts that one wonders what the writer was smoking for coming up with such drivel... one for sure thing is, the MIL is a moron — a gullible idiot. She’s supposed to be the matriarch and one in charge of the family, I’m surprised she managed to survive the battles within the back courtyards, she’s so dumb! She got away with a lot of idiotic things just because she... more>> was the elder. 🙄 <<less

Wow. This is the first time I hated so many characters in a novel.

Spoiler

The MC is great. The ML was a really bad lover. In the beginning, I even kinda felt bad for the antagonist. He was going around, saying, "You have to trust me. Blah blah" but he didn't even explain what's his plan. LIKE. WHY.

Anyway, he became pretty nice to the MC so i'll forgive him for being a bad lover to the antagonist.

Also, how did that mother-in-law survive the household before?? She's so s*upid and easily schemed. You'd think she doesn't have experience in the world. A decent concubine would've eaten her alive years ago. UGH.

Honestly, I'just want to know how this all ends.
