He spent the first half of his lifetime respecting his teachers and placing importance in the way of Dao. Friendly towards other fellow disciples, he was everyone’s role model.
He once believed that he would spend a lifetime like this. Until one day, he met a younger fellow disciple (shidi) who was unbelievably skilled.
This shidi told him that this world was actually a novel. And he, Wen Xuan, would become the most unsightly, petty little villain in this leveling up style cultivation novel. With the next half of his lifetime on a bumpy spiral downward after an erroneous decision, he will be betrayed and deserted by friends and family, cast away and end up dying miserably alone.
“After dinner for leisure, many people would use a mocking tone of disdain to discuss your disastrous life. But no one knew how you survived through all those years. No one saw how you struggled to hold on to your principles in your lonesome. No one cared about the suffering you experienced and your perseverance. But I saw it. I know. I care.”
“That’s why I came to this world. To become your support.”

—————— If I only read up to around chapter 60, I’d be giving a load of praise to this novel and I’d give it a high rating. But wow the last 20 chapters are really just... so aggravating. It feels like the first 3/4 and the last 1/4 of the story are completely different novels. I really liked the first 60 chapters. The pacing was great, the characters had so much dimension to them, the world-building was vivid, and the secrets kept you hooked. While reading it initially, I was already planning out the good review I’d give it... but then the last 20 or so chapters left me so conflicted. “Rushed” is an understatement;;; If the last 20 chapters were paced better, maybe it wouldn’t have been so bad since it genuinely had unique + ambitious character developments and plot points. Plus, I’m a big angst enthusiast so, in theory, the ending should’ve been my type, but the execution of it was a miss for me. Ending spoilers:
1) It’s rare to see an MC that actually leaves and realizes how manipulated he was in a relationship. Novels often romanticize yanderes so I felt relief when it didn’t go that route and showed that the ML is actually trying to change. I LOVE stories that go against common, toxic tropes and show regret + development. It’s just that this change came wayyy too late and ended way too suddenly for me to feel any emotions towards it.
2) The first 60 chapters carefully detail the first year of their relationship and I loved that. But there’s suddenly a time skip totaling around 50 years within 10 chapters and they haven’t developed at all???? And then 50 years of conflict suddenly get fixed in the last three chapters...
3) Some of the main plot points and interesting characters get completely thrown away and wasted. Once the main characters run away from the main conflict of a powerful demon, it felt like the author gives up because after that, it was all downhill for me. I love that it took a darker turn near the end and it felt appropriate but I just wanted it to not be rushed : (
But now that I’ve wasted so much time ranting, I wonder if I’m being too harsh because I’m biased and I just hate any and all time skips;;;
And also, the fact that MC basically would hug his tail everytime he went to sleep makes me go 😳
(It's happened in the last few ch btw)
And 4.7 (personally) because there are only a faint mention about their first time do that near the waterfall.
