When Jiang Ran woke up, she realized that she had transmigrated into a novel.

It was bad enough to have transmigrated into a novel, but why must it be an apocalypse novel? Why have I become a female supporting character who is not even the main female supporting character but merely cannon fodder? Am I not worthy of experiencing the wonderful life of a Mary Sue?

On the first day Jiang Ran met Si Xu, she was already abandoned by her team. To avoid the zombies, she climbed into his room from the balcony and threatened, “Don’t make any sounds, or I will kill you!”

After the crisis was resolved, she realized something in hindsight.

Was the seemingly harmless man she threatened just now the villain boss in this novel? Wasn’t he the ruthless, evil, and terrifying being who disregarded human lives in the eyes of the original heroine?

Jiang Ran resigned herself to her fate: Why don’t I… try to conquer him? What if I succeed?

.

.

.

The seemingly docile but in fact crazy, shrewd rabbit VS the seemingly cruel and in fact cruel old fox.

1V1 sweet novel without angst

It's a good novel with some faults. Nothing particularly off-putting so I'll give it 4 stars. MC and ML are okay, their friends and families have interesting backstories and the plot is fluid enough.

Pros:

-Jiang Ran is a very likeable protagonist. She's rational and witty and her IQ didn't vanish because of love (what a relief). Her backstory is interesting although not particularly novel. Her best weapon is knowing how to read people's hearts and she uses it well. Warning: she's not a heroine, she is willing to be cruel and... more>> ruthless when necessary but she's open about it. Family and friends are more important than strangers, I'm okay with that, especially in this setting.

-Protagonist is strong but not quite in the common trope.
Spoiler

Jiang Ran became pretty strong but not in the usual overpowered way (although there were some unrealistic victories) as she never got any "combative" power. ML trained her in other ways so she'd be able to protect herself

[collapse]

-ML was okay, had personality and his own beliefs. That's to say, he didn't become a love brain. He prioritized MC but also disagreed with her at some points and didn't change his beliefs, he just followed her lead because he cared about her and didn't care much about other things. They had a nice, warm romance (very much understated and not in your face) with a natural progression: you treat me well, I treat you well that led to companionship and trust and liking and then love.

-Family and friends are mostly well developed and have their own distinctive traits and backstories.

Cons:

-Plot holes everywhere. Don't expect much of the worldbuilding and plot logic. There's not much explanation about the world setting, the zombie virus or politics (but maybe I missed some of it in the MTL?). It's pretty much the standard zombie virus with mutated superpowered humans and zombies. The bewildering part is the timeline and logic for past events... Magically, the base was built in such a way that the decades old lab and the family manors of powerful families are all within the defensive walls and nicely situated (base built around the Shen manor? or was the city enclosed to turn it into a base?). The author seemed to occasionally forget the virus had only been a thing for less than a year when she described past events.
Spoiler

ML's mother hated her lover's sister who was also MC's father best friend but never saw fit to warn him she was a green tea crazy woman who was prone to stabbing people? even though she loved him like a brother? An old lab for human or animal experiments (creating mutations or superpowered subjects) in every base manged by different families... were they all working on the zombie virus or what's the logic for it? A conspiracy by all the rich families?

[collapse]
. All the powerful families were so stable even though the virus was so recent...

-Villains are s*upid and keep coming back like c*ckroaches. For some mysterious reason MC and ML won't take them seriously enough to kill them and get rid of threats when they have the chance.

-MC and ML are unrealistically lucky in the way that nothing bad ever happens to them
Spoiler

they get out every trap or attack unscathed, it's ok for ML since he's one of the top 3 most powerful superpowered humans but MC has no combative power apart from nullifying skills so it's unreasonable for her to never suffer a real defeat. Even the most powerful cannibalistic zombie suddenly sided with MC because he liked her cooking so much that he suddenly felt disgusted by human flesh

So far I really like this, the protagonist and mk and straight to the point, brutally honest and funny at times which I appreciate. It's also brilliant to see how their thought process differs from the antagonists and their teammates.

I'm at chapter 39, but I've been trying to find a raw MTL so I can read further then what has already been updated. If anyone knows the Chinese name of this novel please tell me! Although I will definitely be going back through 'pure loves translations' once I'm finished reading... more>> to clarify bits and bobs.

This novel is pretty good. But, it's less about the apocalypse and more about intrigue. Which I don't really care about for the time being (I'm not in the mood for it, which is primarily why I did not give the novel a rating). Maybe I would have kept reading if the focus was on the FL and ML, their dynamics are unique (they're a perfect pair of innocent mu*derers XD if that makes any sense. One moment, they're as sweet as angels, and the next moment, they're as treacherous... more>> or mu*derous as devils.) It's not particularly interesting watching them fall in love, but there's a bit of satisfaction when seeing such a perfect pair fit together. If it were in normal modern times and the circumstances are just right, they could have been a pair of serial killers that killed people in their free time and lived completely average suburban lives the rest of the time — I find that oddly fascinating XD. But even that has its limits.

I would definitely want to read it again in the future for the sake of seeing the ending of this pair. But for now, this novel is not what I'm looking for. I went into it with the wrong mentality. Thinking this would be a typical zombie apocalypse survival novel. But it's really nothing like that. So, a different mood is required when reading it.

_____________

SUMMARY: The FL, Jiang Ran, is an orphaned college student that ended up transmigrating into a book she had recently read. In that book, a girl named Jiang Ranran played the role of an insignificant cannon fodder. She was the hero's first girlfriend, but because she didn't have any abilities, she was cast aside by her boyfriend after he had met the heroine. In the end, while the pair took them with her to head to the base, they also didn't hesitate to sell her off when a man with interest in her came to buy her.

The FL came into the story around this time. She was saved from drowning by the ML (Si Xu, the villain boss of the original novel), and was later bought by him as a "plaything". The FL expected the ML to be cruel and perverse, because that's the way the original heroine described him but he turned out to be a little different. It's true that he's perverse, but he's also surprisingly innocent. Innocent enough to ease the FL's discomfort after being thrown into an apocalyptic world. The two make a deal after their official first meeting, and from then on, she became his, and he became hers.

(As mentioned, this is less about surviving the apocalypse and more about intrigue. The ML is an experimental subject with existing conflicts with the leaders of the main base. Meanwhile, the original owner of the FL's body is the daughter of a scientist who knows more about the apocalypse than probably anyone else in the world. So, there's lots of drama and mystery afoot!!) <<less
