[Edit:]

This is just bad. The MC is a lecherous Gary Stu with zero self awareness. In any other story, he would be the naturally OP faux-perfect villain the hardworking hero would have to overcome. Instead he is our protagonist, and the author completely spoils the rest of his otherwise somewhat intriguing story by trying to frame him as a kind, heroic individual instead of the callous, bloodthirsty, lecherous know-it-all with a hair trigger he actually is. Truly a shame.

[Original review:]

I refrain from rating it for now, but I just... more>> honestly don't get the amount of praise this story seems to receive. Not that it's bad, but I would say it's a stretch to call it really good either. The pacing it way too fast, yet at the same time half of the story seems to be either people info-dumping the worldbuilding and politics to the MC, or the MC lecturing other characters about the same politics he had no idea about a few days before. Not only that, the actual text is extremely verbose to the point it verges on purple prose.

Finally, while I am quite fine with OP main characters, the MC here feels like a textbook Marty Stu. He is super-handsome, super-powerful, every pretty girl seems to immediately get attached to him, if not outright fall in love with him on first sight, he gets away with several capital offenses using nothing but refuge in audacity, he is a perfect judge of character, psychoanalyzing people he just met to the point where he figures out the personality and entire backstory of a character in five minutes, and he even deduces a huge conspiracy related to a noble family in an empire he didn't even know existed a couple of days before. This is almost self-insert fan-fiction level of Stu-ness, and it makes the entire story feel nonsensical.

Again, I am not rating this yet, as there is a chance all of this would make sense given a couple dozen more chapters, but as of now, I am just really baffled by the score this novel received. <<less

[General Summary for prospective readers: It's a great story, however the first 100-200 chapters are groundwork. You don't see anything outside of "improved" versions of generic tropes and 'templates' until the main struggle starts. Because of that, anything prior to chapter 100 isn't actually representative of the story as a whole, it's just LOTS of foreshadowing]

This MC is one of the most palatable and heroic chinese protags out there. He tries to be fair, realistic, and kind. The world is a little "too convenient" and it follows the old Xuanhuan... more>> trope of "Basically God in the Shape of a Mortal schooling all the mortals", but it's done so well and enjoyably that it doesn't really matter.

This is probably the most even-handed and righteous incarnation of that formula. Add to that lovable characters that actually struggle and have depth, female characters that don't think about d*ck and can be considered "in control" of the relationship, and a propensity for everyone else to have rational reactions instead of straight "Kill rape steal" makes this the best Novel to get started with Xuanhaun and chinese tropes.

Plus, the translation is done very well in a way that doesn't lean on jargon, so people with no background in chinese can get a better picture. I'd prefer if the Translator took more asides/made a glossary explaining simple terms like "Nan" and "Bei" (South and north, respectively) so that the completely-new-to-chinese readers can see the foreshadowing and wordplay, but he does a very good job nevertheless.

Edit: the above review was done at chapter 46. Below is added comments for the full series.

Hot. Damn.

Well, consider the "Actual 3 Dimensional Female Character test" the gold standard, because Damn does this series Git. Gud.

This is payoff. This is true catharsis. This is actual struggles and triumph. Not the empty wanking of other Chinese novels, this series foreshadows all of the struggles EARLY on in the arcs, and while there's quite a bit of Grandstanding and the MC is OP as f**k most of the time, seeing him get smashed into the ground with his face ground into the dirt every now and then is great.

Seeing him struggle and fail multiple times is frankly amazing.

Seeing him lose things he cares about, and actually finding that he lacks the power to help those close to him at times? And having him react like a human character and not a god deigning to visit the mortals?

There are going to be some slow parts. There will be some times where it feels like he's on top of the world and nothing really is a threat.

But this is by far one of the best constructed stories with the most human and well rounded characters out there. <<less

Heavily overrated is what it is.

There is no direction, random things happen randomly to random characters (who have no depth by the way). The high grade this one has is all due to the little sister - we all want someone like that in our lives, someone who will do anything for us no matter the cost. It's a nice fantasy and wish fullfilment but nothing else.

*There's no structure to this story - no motivation, no goal. Things just happen.
*The sister gets so attached to the MC... more>> in a span of few hours that she'll do anything for him. Author lacks any understanding of human psychology.
*The characters are so one dimensional that they are barely characters at all. I can't even describe the main character after 48 chapters because there isn't anything to describe, he's that generic.
*MC arrives in a new town and somehow knows everything about everyone while having almost no infomation at all. Pulls his reasoning and actions out of thin air.
*Many lines are wasted on describing power levels yet there is no clear description of the system, nor there is anything written on where the MC fits in that system. All we know is that he just kicks everyone's ass no matter how strong they are.

I could go on and on...

My advice to you is to stay clear, better read something worth your time because this one definitely isn't. <<less

Although it was nice to see someone attempting to present a non-psychotic MC, it isn't well done at all.

The characters build attachment 100x too quickly, the dialogues between them are poorly done, the choices made by characters are often dumb (as in: 'I love you so much I will throw my safe life away for you on a 1 in a trillion chance!'), and the story has way too many unlikely plot twists.

Spoiler

I thought it was particularly retarded that the MC would leave his just-adopted sister WITHOUT TELLING HER, casually letting others take care of telling her instead. Is the MC/author autistic? Does he not care about how this will obviously traumatize her?

But then I saw how the author wanted to show how retarded that girl was, how little she valued her own life (everything for her new brother!!!), so that she could put on some grand show of absurd sacrifice and prove herself worthy of his undying commitment.

[collapse]

It's weird how so many of these authors expect women to be sacrificing themselves for them, when in fact women will always put themselves first (they weren't born to be your pawns). Good relationships are meant to be win-win.

And although real feelings and commitment will appear when healthy people synergize with one another, IT TAKES TIME. This novel has the commitment from adopted siblings develop SO FAST that it becomes annoying and ridiculous. <<less

It's truly awesome. This mysterious MC is making my blood boil every time he speaks. There is this loli Tag but till now there isn't anything beside sibling care. The MC is very protective when it comes to his adopted sister and she is literally obsessed and would definitely kill herself if it was for him or if it was his wish.

I recommend it. Definitely top novel I have read so far.

This is honestly a rare gem. There is this mystery in the background of the MC, this makes it more exciting as he slowly finds out more about himself. It makes it less predictable of how this novel will proceed. I actually spent the time to read the reviews for this novel, and I found out that this is one of Mars better works that actually don't digress in quality over time. There are now 80 chapters and it's getting exciting, for anyone who has read below 50 chapters,... more>> pick it up again. The odd beginning doesn't do justice for the MC, because of his humour and his astounding BS that isn't present at the time. He is honestly an interesting MC who actually has a brain instead of just a fist that kills everyone for some reason. <<less

Comedy: 5/5 Gold. This is the best novel after A Will Eternal (which has been said to be more funny than ISSTH, AFAIK), in terms of comedy.

Romance: 4.5/5 Aaaah, the cute fluffy moments heal your hearts. Harem progresses nicely, and you can see that MC's "true love/heroine" is Xue but he does appreciate other beauties. The scheme he puts in conquering He family's daughter is the most commendable one. Lemme warn you though, don't read if you're offended by lolis or harem, and the start of the romance is a bit cringy (when Xue attempts to rescue MC)

Action: 4/5 Although the hero is OP, he still has many people above him whom, to defeat he has to use several schemes or rely on fate at times (not too over-bearingly lucky though). His abilities are slowly revealed, and he knows how to act calm/arrogant/loving and any one aspect of other MCs in other novels (one at a time, with certain people). He is only OP for people of his power level, there are other stages above the ones he is at as well

Mystery: 4/5 Although it is a bit predictable (I don't think this is a spoiler but my guess is he is the devil king), it keeps you going

The combination of all this gives you a perfect novel which you can binge even if you're bored by all the xianxia/wuxia skimming (which I frequently do)

The story is interesting so far, the MC is likeable and very mysterious. The mystery background of the MC seems to draw you in and you can’t help but getting curious on his background. And since this is story from mars gravity, expect a harem.

Spoiler

There's a very powerful bird that acts as a guardian for a town. Many people settled in the town due to the guardian bird. The bird is mild-natured and kind. She has just laid an egg.

The MC faints due to violent winds (read 'fart') trapped inside him. His girl then goes to steal the bird's egg to wake him up. The bird discovers the girl stealing her egg, but doesn't attack because she is kind hearted. She instead warns her 5 times, but the girl says she'll take the egg which contains the life of the bird's child and as a compensation she'll come to play with the bird. WTF? Compensation? Which mother would play with her child's murderer?

Then the bird attacks to get her egg back, but the girl uses deus ex machina to slaughter the bird in a bright light that doesn't even leave her corpse behind. Later, the egg is turned into soup and fed to the MC just to let him live for 10 more days.

Later, it turns out the MC wasn't in any serious danger, and it is hinted that the MC might have woken up without the egg too, although it would take more time.

[collapse]

I very much want someone to kill the MC and his girl. BTW,

Spoiler

The more than 15 year old MC only has eyes for a 10 year old girl. (It is hinted MC might be more that 20 years old). Creepy & disgusting. BTW if you have read other works of this author, you'll realize s*x with small girls is a recurrent theme, so although the MC hasn't had s*x with the 10 year old girl yet, I think it's just a matter of time.

[collapse]

Update c112:

MC thinks of beautiful girls as items he needs to capture for his "collection". He uses dirty tricks to ensnare girls he doesn't really love because he lusts for their bodies. When other guys do this, they're called cliche arrogant villains, but the MC is instead heroic and manly.

Also, there's unbelievable dues ex machina in the novel which makes me want to flip the table. Example:

Spoiler

MC was about to die. I had high anticipation over what clever trick he'll use to just barely escape with his life by a hair's breadth. But no, he just lies there doing nothing when an unknown power wakes inside him and completely saves him, by the way the unknown power also mind controls the most powerful person in the world (who is also a beautiful woman) and makes her the MC's eternal slave who worships the pathetically weak MC as God.

The MC later uses her to kill his enemies and f**ks her to his heart's content (while she's still under mind control).

[collapse]

Update c206: Full of double standards eg:

Spoiler

MC's loli was being too noisy so princess slapped loli. Later when MC found out he got angry and killed princess in front of the king in the imperial palace. Because of this later troops surround MC & his loli who are about to die. On the verge of dying, MC's last thoughts are (direct quote from the book) :

"I don't like blood,

I hate to kill people,

I only wanted to protect every person beside me

But why will the things always go against my desires?

Why do you force me to kill people....."

F**k you MC nobody forced you to kill princess this is all because of you. If somebody slaps someone you don't kill that person you a***ole. Even if you don't care about your life at least think of the loli beside you and don't unnecessarily provoke enemies you can't handle.

[collapse]

People say all MC's troubles are brought about by women, but until now the trouble brought by women has been the kind MC can easily handle. The real life-threatening trouble is always brought by the MC's foolish arrogance and ego. <<less

Generally, I'm not a fan of these type of novels with the current start of how the MC is. BUT the writing is very, very good, and there is a lot of good comedy tied into a interesting political story.

MC is Strong, somewhat on the OP side, BUT the story's main focus is not Fighting. Fighting is just a tool in the story, just like making money, making allies, pitting people against each other. The interesting part of this story is the ability of the author to just write his... more>> plot to bring all these things together.

(Review based on Raws)

(Side note, current translators are doing sponsored chapters for $15, and chapters are within the 2k word range so... worth it for those who care I guess? Value?) <<less

The story is not bad but it is too much of fantasy which ruining the story foundation, I don't get emotional at all because I simply know that both the MC and his sister are over 9000, there is no way they just gonna suffer or have any difficulty. Conclusion, Plain and Bored...

This is just gross. The relationship between the MC and his 10 year old girl companion is creepy as hell. I know (or at least have a reasonable suspicion) that they're going to be reincarnated lovers or whatever, but up until the part I've read to they are an 18 year old man and a 10 year old girl and he's sleeping with her and giving her baths. Yuck.

Goodness knows quite what the power system is. He's currently at level 10, of what I'm not sure. But is also... more>> just about to reach level 2 in some other system. Oh, and there's also a magic system which is very vague both in effect and construction.

It doesn't really matter as he beats everyone anyway, regardless of who or what they are.

He's smarter than everyone by far, knows exactly, and I mean EXACTLY, how everyone else will react to his plans and to other circumstances. And he's a genius painter and musician and all people around him gasp and virtually pass out in amazement and worship when they see his painting and hear him play the flute.

I don't really mind if the MC is over-powered as that can be fun when he brings down arrogant and bullying characters. But in this case his acts against others are pretty random. And you know it's looking bad when the only character you really want to see beaten up and brought down a peg is the MC.

Over the past couple of years I've been reading, and still am as they're ongoing, well over a hundred Xianxia and Xianxia type books. And this is only the 2nd one that I've given up on.

Finally, parts of the story are written in a rather detached and random style, quite emotionless. A bit strange and makes it difficult to feel any empathy with the characters, even when they're in fairly traumatic situations. <<less

I originally read this when there was just a few chapters available of the translation. The translation was so good and the premise was so intriguing to me that I went to check out the raws.

Only to find out it was bad. Extremely overrated. I mean, I think this as a classic example where the MC is "smart" and "intelligent" only because the rest of the cast has even lower IQ. Sometimes you wonder where common sense went, or if the characters (mostly MC) are even capable of logical thinking... more>> above that of an bellow average person even when they're are supposed to be a genius. The supporting characters are extremely bland; they don't seem to exist without the MC. The mystery might be the only part that makes you wanna read more; other than that the storyline is boring. Some people might use the word "simple" to describe the plot, but to me it is just unimaginative and doesn't know how to properly bring out the interest of the readers. Heck, after reading a bit less than half of the 556 chapters, I just skipped all the rest and read the last few to figure out where the MC comes from. Saved myself from going through hundreds of chapters of more boredom. <<less

Long story short, I have never seen a novel like this one before, and also the MC in this one is lot interesting.

If you would want to read it, then give it a try. however i'd suggest to people that thinks, that having strong power is being arrogance to not to read this novel.
because MC is special, read this and you'll know:

Inside his mind, a new memory emerged.

“... Your body possess water, fire, wind, thunder and earth - the power of death from the five dark elements of the... more>> holy Qilin. Qilin’s blessing. You will not fear the ice nor the snow nor the bitter cold throughout your lifetime. You will not fear the fire nor the burn nor the torrid heat. Not the fear-twisting wind nor the crushing boulder. Not the thunder nor the lighting splitting from the sky nor the breath of death. Your body helps you empower these six channels of forces - water, fire, wind, thunder, earth and death - for you to have immunity and control over these six channeled elemental power... ”
'''

If you like to read this after reading that quote (copied from the novel ch-56). you're welcome to read it.

That's all I guess but one thing I want to say, read everything that is interesting, don't think like oh this MC is arrogant / pipsquick / OP and so you don't want to read it. That be, you're just making yourself unreasonable and making up a reason to not to read (not only this one, but other LNs too), in-short don't be simple minded. <<less

Interesting story developments, unique cultivation. No pointless trash talking, almost Overpowered MC.

MC takes what he wants through his own ability (no excessive plot armor) while protecting his family and those close to him.

The MC is highly intelligent which was quite refreshing and I'd certainly recommend this novel for anyone who prefers an MC that's smart and makes good use of those smarts.

There are also loli's in this novel but don't worry too much, they are much older than their physical appearance/body lead them out to be. They are much older... more>> than 50 years old. <<less

Alright at this point anyone reading novels written by Gravity Mars comes into two categories, either you're a fan of his works or you understand that you will never read any of his novels again. The only reason you read them is to write a review to warn others what is to expect of this. Heavenly Star is a decent novel but suffers from the writing of its protagonist.

The story is decent, starts off with a mysterious young man with heaven given talents. Struggling is not in his dictionary, He... more>> basically has a wide repertoire of skills and talents just waiting to be unlocked. He's basically the perfect protagonist from the start, all that is left is to flaunt his talents, which he admittedly does well with some wits and cunning. The backstory of his past and mysteries also left much to be desired.

But it also fails badly due to another prominent problem existing in all Mar Gravity stories. Depicting the main character. The aggravating thing is always the womanizing written into the story, if the main character was depicted as a lecher who tricks women into his harem, this story would have gotten a 4 star. But the writers choose to portray the protagonist as a kind, compassionate and fair person. Which admittedly he shows it at times, but half of the other time he exists as a human scum of self-centred interest and extreme ego.

The romance tag is half a lie, half of his romance stems from his lust to conquer woman once he took a liking to them. Disregarding all moral value, he will use any method to add them to his harem just for his ego, in fact, he's half a villain at this point. Manipulating people, ruining relationships and disregarding other people's fate as long as he can get another harem member. The only people he treats as people are those close to him, every other is there for him to take advantage of, human decency isn't what he has.

The blatant disregard for the other side of his character is one of the reasons why the novel is very hard to digest added on with the fact of his harem building not even out of love but lust. On the other hand, the story itself is well written if you ignore the characterisation part, the action scenes, as well as the political dealing, makes the novel as a good read. So it boils down to how you like a novel to be.

If you're a discerning person who focuses on the characters you're likely to find a lot of flaws with the characters, if you're in for the story and contents then you'll probably be satisfied, it just comes down to if you're able to ignore or gloss over the main character's horrible personality and his false saintly depiction while enjoying the story. <<less

Reviewed at c51 of genuine translation and c556 (final) of mtl. Rated 3.5 ---> rounded up to 4.

Heavenly Star told the story of a young man who woke up without identity in an unknown zone. There, he met a young girl with similarly unknown background and tied an unbreakable bond with her. After going out of the area, he assumed the identity of a previously missing young master from a declining military family. With tricks and threats, he repaired all the injustices that the family suffered (while shamelessly gathering harem),... more>> but then found bigger threat, that was the girl's origin. Not to mention that his own origin was suspiciously untraceable.

Heavenly Star's narrative was enthralling. The beginning of the story was good, and the plot development was interesting till the end. However, there were some rather disturbing plot holes, also coincidences that was so obviously forced to happen just to give the MC additional arm in facing the threats in front of him. There's not much training scenes or sweaty hard work to get stronger here; more like 80% luck, luck, luck, and trickery, plus 20% mental strength. I also disliked how the author treated the MC's male sidekick, while the MC was allowed to run rampant with his d*ck.

The good news for you would-be readers, this novel has plenty lolis. Goddess loli, sword loli, demon loli, childish loli, loli baba.... I just regret that there's no bunny-eared or cat-tailed loli. Also, the MC has this really cool temperament for which you can't help but applaud. <<less
