Eight hundred years ago, Xie Lian was the Crown Prince of the Xian Le kingdom. He was loved by his citizens and was considered the darling of the world. He ascended to the Heavens at a young age; however, due to unfortunate circumstances, was quickly banished back to the mortal realm. Years later, he ascends again–only to be banished again a few minutes after his ascension.

Now, eight hundred years later, Xie Lian ascends to the Heavens for the third time as the laughing stock among all three realms. On his first task as a god thrice ascended, he meets a mysterious ghost who rules over the ghosts and terrifies the Heavens, yet, unbeknownst to Xie Lian, this ghost king has been paying attention to him for a very, very long time.

However his friendship goes beyond the common definition, for as threads slowly start unravelling on the story behind Xie Lian's misfortune filled life, and secrets are unearthed - there is a terrible truth to be uncovered.

In short, I fell in LOVE with this story, its well written main characters, the side characters with their own beautiful story arcs and the slowly developing relationship between former Crown Prince Xie Lian and the Ghost King Hua Cheng.

When people gush about how this couple literally "invented" love, they're right!! The amount of pure devotion and care shown between these characters is heart wrenching and worth reading every page for - then rereading once more when clues fall into place and you realise that the one insignificant detail from chapter 5 is a BIG plot point.

Well, for this story my opinion is quite complicated because I agree with people who review 1 star, but also agree with people who put 5 stars.

Don't get me wronged : I love TGCF, and it is one of the best novel I've ever read so far, I will also rate this story 4.5/5 even 5/5 if I'm in a very good mood.

But I can understand some readers saying it was quite hard sometimes to maintain interest on this novel I.e. I don't really know why but sometimes I devour... more>> 50 chapters in one go (RIP sleep), and sometimes I even forced myself to go on. Maybe it is because the story takes wayyyyyyy too long to keep going but hey, it IS slow burn so don't be too surprised.

But I still think this story is a really must to read, just because of the very complex and well built characters, world and settings. Especially the romance between the MC and ML, their story made me cry, howl in anger and have rotten teeth because of too much sweetness pouring out of my screen. They made me go through so many emotions I have to applaud the author for that.

So in a nutshell : very funny and interesting story in some parts, very heartbreaking and frustrating moments as well. You may be tempted to quit on some chapters because of the SLOW burn, but really, keep going it is worth it : It really is a good story. <<less

By the same author as The Untamed, this is a really good novel. One of the rare few novels where the author isn't afraid to have the MC go through trials and tribulations which keeps the reader engaged to find out how a problem will be resolved. It's also rare in the fact that a lot of the side characters (good and bad guys alike) are given substance and we get to see a lot of their motivations and struggles.

Pros

-A lengthy read that doesn't feel dragged out. The... more>> pace of the story keeps you reading.

-Well written character development for both MC and ML but also surrounding characters.

-While I wouldn't call this a fluffy novel at all, the MC ML pairing is really sweet

-I feel like a lot of the arcs for the side characters don't really get resolved.

-ML's behavior towards MC is explained but I don't think MC behavior towards ML makes too much sense.

There is not a single moment where MC doesn't 100% trust ML, despite his closest friends telling him to be careful. It makes for cute romance and the reader knows that he's fine but I wonder if perhaps the MC should have had more reservations before their relationship developed to that 100% trust bond.

There are various mentions of his chastity vow as part of his cultivation path but nothing really about whether kisses or hugging etc would weaken his cultivation nor why he chose this route. It's also briefly explained how gods ascend (being lucky I think) but is descending merely visiting earth or giving up the right to be a god? Also Lower/Middle Heaven was talked about in the beginning but never really mentioned afterward. Was that destroyed as well?

I mentioned some cons just for a more balanced review but honestly, I would just recommend giving this a go. While the BL aspect is important to the story, even without the romance it's a really good story in general. <<less

Such a beautiful love story, this was the first novel of this kind that I've read and it really sealed the deal for me, now I'm in love with this genre. Everything was so perfect, the way things go is so smooth and nice? I think their relationship is so cute and wonderfully developed. I can't stress this enough, the way they go through different stages of their relationship is amazing and heartwarming, it was like I was falling in love along with them. No other words to describe, just 'love.' It has to be read. It's very good and the I love the plot. Some people say the plot is slow but I think the pace is ok. This story makes me feel so immersed and I have laughed, cried, and have gotten angry because of this story. Never have I read a story that made me feel this much since the "Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation, " if you have read that before, I will say you will enjoy this. The ML is the best, most supportive, loving, intelligent person ever. The story itself is interesting, I enjoyed reading the MC solve various cases, I enjoyed the variOus characters who appeared. The MC has a past that is heavy, he was originally arrogant not in a every one should bow to me way but more just naive way. It's hard to see him suffering and it's even harder to see the ML suffering for him but it's all well written and everything makes sense. I liked the MC, he is... more>> unique and made me laugh at his unique quirks. I would definitely recommend this novel, it has an interesting story and enjoyable characters. Also the villain is horrible and complex and the worst so really well done author on that. The villain has his own story and there is a link between the MC and the Villain. good, and I enjoyed it at the end,

the story was detailed, most of the storyline tied together and made sense. The characters were very developed 3D characters. May I also say: "!!!!!!HUALIAN!!!!!!!" true love amirite.

-Here are the cons (I'm not gonna write the pros, I'm lazy.)

It feels like the author bit off a bit more than she could chew when it came to the story and characters. What happened to the SQX, SWD, and black water sinking boats sub plot? I can see the author tried to integrate... more>> that part of the story but it didn't fit into the main story-line, so she left the ending to that sub plot half-baked. No explanations or anything.

And the question of what about ling wen? I was waiting on her sexy backstory but despite the author dropping hints there wasn't any at the end.

Another point I would like to make is that this novel gives you extreme blue balls. HOly, it takes a Looooooooong time for the main pairing to get together. I won't say which chapter, but it takes until basically the end of this 200+ chapter novel for them to officially get together. I don't think that is really necessary.

Also the start of the novel. The start of the novel is extremely boring. I was NOT hooked at all. It took me 100+ chapters to get hooked. <<less

This was my first Chinese webnovel experience and it is my favorite. I have to say that this novel had very few flaws in my opinion. It suited my tastes very well. It was long, had slow-burn romance, silly and romantic scenes, dramatic and heartbreaking scenes, good character development, etc., etc. I personally would have liked a little more of the two main characters spending lovey-dovey days as the worlds best couple but that's just a personal preference, not enough action for me! I read MXTX's other novels after this... more>> and noticed that they seem to have the same pattern of introducing something as important that is actually not important at all. This really throws me off when reading, but it was not too bad this time so I can overlook it. Overall, I have to say that this novel was so good and satisfying that I went and bought TGCF merch from Taobao, all because of this novel. I've never done this for any book I've read, I do often buy merch from TV shows but for me the book is usually enough of a treasure. This time I needed a physical reminder of this novel that really touched my heart. I really fell for the characters and I'm very glad to have read this story. <<less

I just loved the relationship between these two, they are equally devoted dumbasses and only together do they save the world.

The rest of the characters are hilarious and pretty interesting, which rounds out the whole world setting a lot- But surprisingly this time I also just really really adored both of the main characters. Not just one of them, but really both are absolutely lovable, well rounded and complex and this whole novel made me cry in the best way. Even better, there is actual plot and it's quite intricate... more>> for the genre. Plus the best happy ending is one that doesn't make me feel cut off and here the author really managed to build up the suspense and tension then diffuse it to leave the reader fully satisfied at the end.

PERFECT: that describes this novel pretty much. I love MXTX in general, but this book is her best.

The characters are each and everyone extremely well developed. As the book is quite long -and yes: it has flashbacks as well- the sudden plot twists make it exciting to read and not at all tiring. The relationships between the characters are progressing slowly and steadily; overall it has a very chaste and innocent taste without sacrificing plot for excessive love/smut.

XL falls deep and hits rock bottom, but is not that perfectly optimistic... more>> and mary-sue guy. He very relatably struggles in life. HC is just perfect in my opinion. He might be a little too idealistic as a lover, but I like the respectful and caring type like him more than those awfully egoistic ones.

Great novel that I can only recommend. <<less

This is will forever be my favorite light novel that I've read in the last 5 or so years. I am terribly upset I cannot reread it all and go through all the range of emotions again. I laughed out loud, I cried, I cursed, I loved all the characters. Everyone is alive in this story. Not a single character useless, not a single person left unfleshed out. HuaLian & their story is my favorite out of MXTX’s work! It’s so sweet & beautiful you can’t help but love... There’s a wonderful manhwa & donghua adaptation to bring the story to life. You won’t regret reading this, only not finding it sooner ~

Fall in love with Hua Cheng and Xie Lian.

Reading this reminded me.. No matter how much you want to do good for others.. You still can not save everyone can not please everyone. Have heart but no strength.

Excellent plots, arcs, characters and story. This is my first BL xuanhuan and completely loved it! (19/12/2019)

Edit: I read more novels since and HOB is so far number 1 in my chart. I Haven't read anything coming close. I watched the "Untamed", even the anime, but didn't read the novel. I don't feel like doing it. I read "The Scum Vilain's Self Saving System" and it is a good one. But I think "The Legendary Master's Wife" is better. Anyway, it is difficult to find a novel as enthralling... more>> and so well rounded as "Heaven Official's Blessing". Everything else feel a bit blank. But I still have lots to read (Sha Po Land, The Husky and His Cat,... etc) so I might find something else as great soon 🤍 (24/10/2020) <<less

This novel is the best one I have read so far! It's superior to MDSZ in my opinon in every level. I swear is a most read! It is slow at the beginning but slowly you start to get engaged in the story. Hua Cheng and Xie Lian caracthers are so well written and you ended up loving their relationship so much.

It's heartbreaking and some parts are raw and disturbing but when you finished it.. You want more.

I’ve read the entire novel. Anyway spoiler alert, proceed with caution. My bad, idk how to use the spoiler function lol.

The novel’s definitely a worth read. I also think the plot’s slightly better than Mo Dao Zu Shi and Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System tho some parts are quite boring to read like Xie Lian’s Past. My thoughts about Xie Lian’s past was that at first, I find it quite boring but it turns more interesting when White No-Face appeared and the YongAn rebellion happened. The time when I cried was... more>> when Xie Lian wanted to kill Lang Ying but he was stunned and in despair when he found out Lang Ying has a king’s aura so he couldn’t kill Lang Ying at all, when Xie Lian was stabbed by hundreds of people and he cried “It hurts” hundreds of times in his mind, when Mu Qing refused to help Xie Lian and wanted him to leave the cultivation place cuz Mu Qing didn’t want to ruin his relationship with the 33 heavenly officials, when Xie Lian found his parents committing su*cide using RuoYe and many more. Tbh, I thought Xie Lian was pretty dumb at times and at first, I just wanted him to launch the Human Face Disease to the YongAn people but after I realised that doing so would only be obeying White No-Face’s command, I was glad that he did what he did. I know I’m biased towards Xie Lian but I can’t help disliking Lang Ying for leading the rebellion and conquering Xian Le even tho I know that Lang Ying was only fighting for his people that was wronged.

Some of you might blame Mu Qing and hate him, and I admit there were times I was annoyed with him. But I could also understand why he left Xie Lian and did what he did. Mu Qing’s behaviour was pretty realistic since he was only considering his situation. He has his own family to take care of so there’s no way he could just go off and take care of Xie Lian’s parents. He asked Xie Lian to leave the cultivation place to not ruin his standing among his fellow heavenly officials but he still felt a guilty conscience so he wanted to give rice and other food to Xie Lian tho he was ruthlessly thrown out by Xie Lian. So far, my feelings towards Mu Qing was pretty neutral. There was one scene about Mu Qing where I quite liked which is when Mu Qing admitted truthfully that he thought Xie Lian was a dumbass goody two shoes but he still wanted to be friends with Xie Lian and thought of Xie Lian as awe-inspiring.

Tbh, I think of Jun Wu and White No-Face as two different people and I was feeling quite conflicted when I found out that Jun Wu was the Villain all along and his ending was that he was sealed under Mount Tonglu. Truth be told, I’m quite fond of Jun Wu’s character tho I hate White No-Face. In the first place, I know that Jun Wu would either be a golden thigh for Xie Lian or a main villain since his appearance was quite a novelty. Him calling Xie Lian as “Xian Le” is also one of the things I like about him lol. But Gosh, I HATE White No-Face so much especially when he poked fun at Xie Lian when Xie Lian was mentally unstable and especially when he ordered hundreds of people to stab Xie Lian. Gosh, I HATE HIM. Btw, any chance that Jun Wu and Guoshi can be an item? Fufufu, I heard Guoshi’s appearance is at least like a 30 year old while Jun Wu is mid 20s.

The drama about Feng Xin having a wife (Jian Lan) and son (Cuo Cuo) caught me off-guard tho. I honestly didn’t expect it at all but I was pleased with how Jian Lan refused to be with Feng Xin in the end since I’m pretty sure Feng Xin would still have a difficult time accepting Cuo Cuo as his son. But bruh, till the end, I still don’t know who’s the one that made Cuo Cuo a resentful spirit. I thought I missed some details but I was too lazy to go back so I just assumed it was Jun Wu.

For the arc with He Xuan and Shi Qing Xuan, I always find it strange why Shi Wu Du just wouldn’t straightforwardly get rid of the Reverent of Empty Words after he ascended since he’s the Lord Water Master, right? At first, when Xie Lian decided to not delve deeper into the situation, I thought “So, Xie Lian didn’t think of Shi Qing Xuan as a friend???”. I mean, I was satisfied with how the arc ended but I still feel upset for both He Xuan (his revenge wasn’t very satisfying cuz Shi Wu Du still didn’t repent at all) and Shi Qing Xuan (he lost his arm and leg). I feel bad for the original Ming Yi tho. When I was browsing through the Heaven’s Official Blessing’s wiki made by its fandom, they wrote that He Xuan was currently following Shi Qing Xuan around lmao. To this day, I still wonder what He Xuan really thought of Shi Qing Xuan. I know he gave multiple chances to Shi Qing Xuan to correct his brother’s wrongs but Shi Qing Xuan still chose Shi Wu Du so I’m kinda curious what He Xuan’s thoughts really are.

I think my most favourite part is the extra where Xie Lian and Hua Cheng created statues of Hua Cheng for every Xie Lian statues in the Thousand Statues Cave. I laughed so hard when the “wen rou xiang Xie Lian statue” ran off to Xuan Zhen Palace’s mountain and then had s*x with a Hua Cheng statue. In the end, two statues became one statue. The relationship between Xie Lian and Hua Cheng is too sweet that I almost got diabetes from reading lol. It was pretty sad when Hua Cheng disappeared for more than six months after defeating Jun Wu cuz of the lack of spiritual energy. Not much to say about Xie Lian and Hua Cheng except for how loveable and cute they are.

Let’s discuss about my most favourite character, Pei Ming. You might find him unpleasant at first around the arc where Xuan Ji first appeared but as the story continues, I find Pei Ming so loveable ah. And you might also be annoyed with how he thinks that women is below him even tho he loves women but his overall personality isn’t that bad. It’s so funny how he could make a completely normal convo into something so ambiguous as shown when he was conversing with Ban Yue and called her “You dummy, you can’t even do this?” and Ban Yue saying “It’s my first time (cooking) ”, and then Xie Lian decided to tamper with the recording of the conversation to distract Xuan Ji. And I love how he’s so supportive of Hua Cheng and Xie Lian’s relationship. By far, he’s completely the popular guy with how Rong Guang, Xuan Ji, Ban Yue and Pei Su always around him making dramas lmao.

Anyway now it’s about Quan Yi Zhen and Yin Yu, obviously I feel super bad for Yin Yu since it’s not like he REALLY ABSOLUTELY wanted to harm Quan Yi Zhen. But even then, if I was Yin Yu and had to cope with Quan Yi Zhen, I would have long blown up from anger. I mean, sometimes Quan Yi Zhen’s obliviousness is quite adorable but sometimes it’s just pouring oil towards a raging fire. I think these two really need a VERY DEEP heart-to-heart convo. Quan Yi Zhen needs some SLAPS OF REALITY so he’ll at least wake up a lil. Otherwise, these two makes a cute couple lol. Btw, I have no comment for Ling Wen and Bai Jing bruh. I still don’t understand why she killed Bai Jing. Or did I miss something? But actually, I quite liked Ling Wen a lil bit.

Also, I heard Xie Lian’s growing weaker cuz his cultivation requires abstinence from worldly pleasures but he kept being so “active” with Hua Cheng. <<less

Through laughters and tears I finish this story. My regret is that it doesn't have their sexy scene...

Just finish chap 190, and I am too depressed for words?

Chap 8: I just wanted to say that MXTX always manage to surprise me again and again with her story. The mix of myth, superstition, it's like listening to elders in the family telling stories to scare the children but the children never know how much of it is true. I am trembling with excitement (also horror)..

Its a book that got compared with MDZS alot, but honestly, they cannot be compared for me. Don't get me wrong, Founder of Diabolism is great on its own too, yet in front of pure, a love that grew over generations, it does seem a bit weak. Both stories have love interest that is born and grown in years. But, the reverence Hua Cheng showed, combined with detail of him falling in love, made whole novel a masterpiece on its own. By comparison, this novel has the kind of love... more>> I wish every novel to have. Not restrictive, respectful yet full of love and cherishing small moments.

If there is anything people might complain, it is probably wanting more content of HuaLian or how it is lacking in "spice".

For me, it managed to feel like a pure puppy love despite knowing the things Hua Cheng did, that alone made me love the novel wholeheartedly. I hope I will see fanfics for HuaLian, it was just too beautiful and like a naughty child, I do not want to believe my candy is already eaten rip <<less

I love all of this author's books, they have a real talent for character building, but this one is my favorite! While all of their books have good side characters, I feel like we got to know the ones in HOB a lot better and that they got more screen time so to speak. Plus the main couple is just about the cutest, tooth-rotting sweetest pair I've ever read in my life. I just wanted to pull them both into a hug and sob like a baby. I do like the story and I love most of the characters but I feel that this story was not nearly as good as MDZS. I, feel that more info coould of been put into describing the other characters in the novel, maybe not as part of the actual novel itself but as extras - like what, exactly, happened to the wind master for him to end up the way he did or a quick story on how he lives his life now.
