Hard to Escape

Waking up after a car accident, the first thing I saw was Yin Li’s handsome threatening face.

It made me somewhat embarrassed.

But in the end I had to be ruthlessly heartless, cursing while pointing at his shapely nose:

“It looks like you’re the bastard who hit me!”

He blankly stared, and then coldly said:

“I’m your fiancé. Yan Xiao, you have amnesia.”

Then I had to persuade Yin Li, I was a wretched toad and wasn’t good enough for him.

He sneered, “Even if you grew wings to become a swan, you still wouldn’t be able to escape your birthright. Not to mention that you’re just a toad.”

This is definitely not the general amnesia plot that you have in your mind! You definitely won’t be able to guess it~

When I started reading it, I thought it was amazing. The FL was funny and ML mysterious. I was coming up with very wild, misconstrued theories as to what was happening. I thought the author was a genius.

You gain absolutely no information from the description of this novel and if you don’t look at the tags, you’re really jumping into the deep end. As a reader you’re kept cluelessly envisioning what the real story is.

And the description is right. You really wouldn’t be able to guess. Even now that I’ve... more>> read it all, I want to reread the beginning and try to pick up on everything I missed.

  1. There’s lots of foreshadowing and the FL has a keen eye. She picks up on things quickly. Lies are peeled away at and you’re left reeling in its tracks. It feels very much like a mystery type novel at the beginning.
The plot thickens and you’re absolutely engrossed in their relationship and what’s happening. The pacing is brilliant and you feel like you might know where this is going.

You don’t. There’s a complete genre change. It’s absolutely beyond me. I probably never would’ve picked it up if I had known what was being hidden and the truth of the past.

That is to say, it’s not a bad genre that it progresses to, but just something perhaps I have no interest in.

The story unravels and everything pieces together. It’s such an interesting story, not strictly in the engaging way, more in the ‘I’ve not read anything quite like this’ way.

And although at the beginning I would rated everything 5/5, I would overall give this a 3.5.

What let me down a little was it’s plot twist and what followed.

The first half is amazing! Would strongly recommend to read even just for that portion. Unfortunately, what followed was not in my interest.

The main relationship changed drastically and I felt as if the ML was becoming more 2D. The FL, on uncovering her past, had understandably changed dramatically. We don’t see that funny, bright, sharp character from the beginning anymore. It’s very understandable but I feel a sense of loss for what I started reading this novel for.

The final chapter is so tasteless in my opinion. It’s a huge let down. It has depreciates the value and my image of this novel even. It’s just really tacky that’s why. Give this novel a shot and you’ll understand why.

Overall, amazing first half, a slightly more dull second half.

Though I do recommend reading at least for its beginning! <<less

I hate the ML. I have an urge to seriously slap him. He deceives and manipulates the FL when she lost all her memories so he could take advantage of the situation and protect someone else.

If you're looking for fluff, and lighthearted romance novels, this is not for your. Too much drama. Exhausting to read. This is like those stories you'll find in a telenovela, where MC is too distraught, and there's too much stuff going on for her. Decent story, just not for me.

Wowow, what an emotional ride, full of evocative writing and good pacing, eagerly unravelling the MC's true past. The easy-going comedy vibe given from the description is quite different from the intensity of the novel itself.

I loved the vivid descriptions of her resolution and suffering, and how she expresses her raw emotions through those passionate dances. Yan Xiao is a multi-dimensional character; she's flawed and broken, but her determination and resilience are what makes her admirable and moving. Her cheeky quips at the start are also fun too.

The way their... more>> relationship develops is interesting too...

Spoiler

... So Yin Li actually is indifferent to Yan Xiao at the start, and that's why his attitude is fake and cold (?). He only tries to tie her down as his fiancée to protect his sister. But gradually they (mutually I'd say) fall in love and Yan Xiao lets down her guard, only to have her trust broken when she recovers the truth of her past.

An honestly phenomenal story and amazing translation work!

It's been a long time since I've read a novel as realistic yet romantic as this. The pacing of the story was perfect and there were no tropes that one would usually see in FL romance novels beyond the amnesia.

The FL was such a real character for how she felt during her recuperation and then as she regained her memory, using them to grow as a person beyond who she used to be.

ML started as a trope-CEO type but as we got to... more>> know him his character quirks and flaws were revealed and reflected upon.

I loved the progression of both the FL's character development and the romance. Nothing felt rushed or forced over all, and it wasn't yet another contrived love at first sight story where the ML lacked any such characteristics to gain the MC's attention.

In summary, a brilliant novel with great emotional writing that was grounded.

Thanks to the brilliant translators for such a faithful translation and allowing me to become fully immersed in this world! <<less

This a fluffy, funny, bitter sweet, angsty romance web novel with a lot of mystery going on. Is very very well written and the characters are well developed. I loved loved both FL and ML and their stories.

Just so everyone's clear, it has a happy ending!

First of all, if you're reading this for the sake of making sure it wouldn't bore you out then you're right on track. 2nd of all, if you're someone like me who abandoned this novel in their reading list and forgot about it, then you shall come to regret that after finishing this gem.

This novel isn't the usual modern novel with blood dog drama or some kind of transmigrated female MC with or without a system. In fact, it is about an amnesiac girl who struggled in life, both in... more>> love and in who she is as a person with dreams she has long forgotten along with her sense of self. The way the author portrayed such a moving and unique description of how the MC went through brought tears in my eyes after forgiving and accepting her past. Especially with her/his perspective on the art of ballet and as an artist (about this Mexican woman Frida I think? That gave MC the same vibe from her past). (Man, that showdown between the ML's sister and her made me a bit emotional)

The psychological tag really served its purpose as you read. One time you're laughing at how hilarious, petty and straight forward the MC is, then suddenly the author brings you a whole new mood of depression, lost of self, and a moral with each characters (s) he brings (probably why I'm still having this empty feeling in my chest after finishing it *sigh*). After everything everything was resolved with the MC's trouble, I actually found the ending a bit weird. Like, ML you really gotta be like that? But then again, I'm not actually surprised. The only thing I was actually a bit disappointed from was that we never got to see Frank's documentary of MC's life from being a talented ballerina, to someone who was almost crippled, to being able to achieve her dreams through her blood, sweat and tears. So yeah, I was disappointed that there was none of that.

As for the translation, it was fun reading the translators sama's side comments at the very end of some chapters (you got it dawg) to the point I started talking in that way (don't ask). <<less

I feel conflicted with this story, not because of the grayness within it but I think it was more the execution of it which lacked smoothness and good pacing.
I love the gray/dark blurred lines in it but I've found with this that my love for grays and darks within a story depends a lot on how they are executed. This execution left me unsatisfied.
The MC was not as... compelling. The ML was dark but not as intriguing and magnetic either. It just felt like the whole writing and story composition was just a little off the mark for me, which made it somewhat awkward overall.

It's well written, although it has its cheesy moments (like the one on DOHere's spoiler). It addresses various things related to facing the real world. There are a lot of morally questionable deeds here and there, but I can't help but admit that it makes me feel that these characters are so raw with emotions. Each one has a baggage they carry. This story plays well with emotions.

5/5 for the translators. They did a really good job.

It's true, the final proposal sucks. But apart from that, there's really nothing else to pick from this novel. It's a sweet, emotional and fluffy story. Yin Li loves her a lot even if they got a bad start. He lied that she's his fiancee to protect his sister and to tie her up to himself, but in the end, he was the first one to fall in love.

What I like about this ML is that he took his time wooing her. He did not push her, he earned her... more>> forgiveness. What I like about the FL is that she's not petty. They are both willing to admit their mistakes. FL is not a pushover either. There's no face slapping. No dog blood drama. Everyone is reasonable.

Spoiler

You would think that ML's sister and FL won't have the chance to be friends since the sister was the hit and run culprit. It would have been normal for both of them to hate and hurt each other, but not these two. Both are willing to admit their fault even to the detriment of their career, both are willing to approach each other to work together. I'm really glad they both became closer in the end. The ML really loves his sister but he loves FL more but even when there's jealousy, it's not toxic.

I’m giving this a 4.0 based on the translators, they did a wonderful job and their notes were charming and entertaining

This is not the usual Chinese Romance, it is deeper. I enjoyed the soul searching the FL went through, and if it had just been a novel about her journey this would be a 5 star review

But there was the romance which brought my review down to 3 stars. The romance never felt natural and distracted from the “real” story for me. And the last chapter almost made this a... more>> two star review, I was that unhappy with it

Spoiler

Faking death, dancing police officers, parachuting old people, the end was surreal and didn’t fit in with the rest of the novel

Even with all its faults I still enjoyed the novel, except the last chapter, I wish I could unread it and remove it from my brain <<less

The best part I liked about this novel is ... more>>
Spoiler

the one when she cried really hard as she was exercising and there was no one else to coax her. Actually there was one but he was not the affectionate ML like in other novels. He was just a stranger who passed by a pathetic person and did what he has to do as a human being not a loved one whom she needed most.

And as I was reading I got interested in ballets (even searched concerts on youtube).

But at the same time, I think main characters feelings had appeared unreasonably at some point and just developed further without much reason (I guess only in my opinion, though. Maybe I've got used to multiple point of views, too much). But still I read this novel until the very end, which is rare occurrence for me. So it has a very special something that intrigued me. I can't tell what exactly it is, but if you're interested I suggest you to find it out by yourselves. Enjoy! <<less

Reading this novel gave me a feeling completely different from other Chinese novels. The characters and storyline are very realistic and relatable in many ways.

Every dream comes with a price and losing the dream sometimes is no different from losing your life when all you've done was always living for that dream.

In this story we see how our MC desperately lives for her dream and even when all hopes are gone, she still pushes herself to make the impossible possible. At the same time, she doesn't want to be shackled... more>> by her dream. She wants a life on her own while holding unto that dream and she takes us along her journey of losing and rediscovering herself, battling with love, hate, resentment, regret.

All in all, this is definitely a great story and our ML is also non-conventional. <<less

I honestly do not like amnesia but this novel is an exception. When you find out the truth behind her accident to lose her memory and her legs. I guess it might make you feel complicated as you watch her stubbornly push the ML away to find resolve in her past trauma. In MC's POV, her career was never really something she is proud of. So even if it had a lot of unreasonable excuses to keep MC pursuing what she hates. I think it just goes to show that... more>> giving up may help but forcefully striving forward to fight against it is a better resolution than anything. Therefore no regrets and no more pain.

I would recommend this novel to anyone who likes a stubborn and devoted protagonist with character growth. There is romance but this story revolves more around the protagonist career and how she grew to challenge and overcome it. It's a nice read only if you wish to change your perspective. <<less

For me, the novel was good, dizzy, frustrating because of the fast pace and the world background. Still, I liked the lessons in life that the FL went through even with the dramatic reasons and the relationship between ML and FL, flaws that both realized and forgave each other, the fluffiness was nice.

A sentence from the FL in the novel:

"Everything that happened between us was too drama-filled and complicated. I loved him and wouldn't leave him. But recalling the past, there were many minor trifles that made the road more bumpy. " If this story were to be considered by the author to write it more detailed and not fast-paced either, then it would be more thrilling or more sensational but this is only my wish, I am already satisfied enough. I suggest to read this story completely in one day because it gets really boring as you might forget a lot of content from the chapters.

P.S: No bed scenes, don't worry! :D <<less

What a heart wrenching story.

It was beautiful. In writing and things presented in it.

It was sad. Especially when the main twist revealed itself and the consequences followed, it was quite painful.

It has its depth and shades. The life of professional, what one need to sacrifice for career. Tough life in itself. Family bonds.

It was not perfect but it was real. And these are the stories I love the most.

Spoiler ahead:
Spoiler

I binge read it in a day and I have to say, it had only one blemish: the jer*ish proposal in the end. Just what? That was really, really unbecoming and distasteful way to do things and I personally would be mad as hell.

Beautiful, so so beautiful. A novel about a girl lived her life to shine for others coming to terms with her story and choosing a life for herself.

Characters: 5/5

I love the MC so much, especially in the beginning chapters she's so funny. We see her trying to escape from the things she's been chained by. ML is also very sweet but at the same time so so evil; he's shameless if he has to be to get the things he wants. Yin Xuan is also an amazing character, and her... more>> pairing with MC is just brilliant. Their lives and their hearts are similar but at the same time so far apart. The struggles of everyone in the story is written so potently, I genuinely shed tears. The characters are portrayed in such a human way.
Spoiler

Tbh I'm still confused about the tattoo part. I feel like at that time ML didn't actually love her yet? Was it out of guilt then?

[collapse]

But I hope Li Jing can be happy.

Plot: 5/5

A great take on the amnesia plot. I also have such an appreciation for ballet; selfishness and cruelty and the chase for perfection becomes engrained in your bones. As much as you may be selfish and cruel to others, you are so much more so to yourself. It's an incredible art that is built on sacrifice and pain to show the audience "effortless" grace and beauty.

Writing & Translation: 5/5

Thanks for the hard work! <<less

4 maybe because this isn't my cup of tea but I made it through the end because its very nice.

The feelings narrated are raw and painful. The characters here arent like the others which are pure black or pure white- they're gray. At first I was quite "???" and suspicious at the ML at what he was doing and at times, he makes me go 'wtf'-but as the story develops, I just feel enlightened.

While I was reading I felt nervous at what will happen next, you can also say I... more>> share the feeling MC experienced when she remembered parts of her parts and that made me unable to stop reading. Truth be told, I only wanted a fluffy novel, I didn't want to deal with any heavy drama and psychologically related novels (well, I wouldn't call this that heavy but im more of the unrealistic and fluffy side reader type). The first few chapters made me want to press the home button but thinking that I had nothing to do, I kept on reading until I finished it in one sitting. It's good even though it made me so nervous.

Spoiler

Especially the end, LIKE WHAT THE f*ck ML?? Bit*h deadass had me on edge and made me scream the f*ck out loud. Damn.
