Green Plum Island

When I was ten, I fell from a tree and hit my head. When I woke up, the world around me had changed. I could see people’s emotions in the form of numbers and colours—pink for love, red for anger, green for awkwardness, blue for sorrow, yellow for desire…

I met Yan Kongshan the summer after college entrance exams on Green Plum Island. Mysterious and handsome, with a tinge of melancholy, he was the ideal man of every woman on the island. And mine.

I wanted him to turn pink for me, but one day, he suddenly turned yellow. Despite that, he seemed ever so nonchalant when facing me.

Love is like lemon soda water. Sour and sweet, filled with energy.

You never know how a person’s heart beats for you, hidden in its cage beneath their flesh.

When I first saw the synopsis I thought it'll be just full of fluff. But in reality, this story gave me just the perfect blend of fluff, emotional scenes, very vivid depiction of small and mundane occurring around the characters like the buzzing of the cicadas, the moisture clinging on a bottle of coke and last but not the least, how the characters is written so well I can feel empathy for them.

Green Plum Island may just have earned it's place in my top list. I'll never forget this. I... more>> aspire to be like Mianmian with how real and strong he handles his life and love. May all of us learn a lesson or two after reading this story and maybe remember good memories we forgot through the passage of time.

Thank you so much for giving us a chance to read this wonder of a story. I know this is not much a review and I'm not good at this but I just wished to convey my feelings for this novel.

Peace out. <<less

This book hits all the sweet spots. Reading it was like feeling the summer breeze and I could almost smell the ocean. It's a very comfortable read, but that doesn't mean you can't get the feels reading the book! The main couple has great chemistry despite the age gap and the author does a great job showing readers how they get to know each other, become friends, and eventually fall in love :). Supporting characters are lovable and have dimension as well! I realized I couldn't stop reading because I... more>> cared about everyone from the main couple to the two cats Da Bai and Er Bai and their momma cat :3.

MC Yu Mian's ability to see emotions as colors was a nice extra touch to the story. It's interesting reading how that influenced the way he interacted with others and developed as a person! Although he was able to see emotions as colors, his world was generally colorless until he arrived at Green Plumb Island and met all the wonderful people of the island. I love him so much! He is vulnerable and strong and has a certain quality of youth that was refreshing to read about. Yu Mian felt like an 18 year old, trying to figure out life and himself. He's really quite mature, but still has moments of hotheadedness that makes him so human and relatable. He can feel unconfident or be scared of confrontation, but when push comes to shove Yu Mian will let his voice be heard! When he makes up his mind, he goes for it which I loved. He pursues the ML but it's not annoying and instead adds to his character growth imo.

Yan Kongshan seemed to check off all the checkboxes for dreamy ML and wow was he such a great character as well. Boy am I soft for outwardly mature inwardly clingy male leads who are also great fathers ;). While the beginning seems to show Yan Kongshan as the more mature person, by the end of the novel I saw Yu Mian as equal if not slightly more mature at times lol. His love and care for Qiu Qiu is so sweet and I like how he wasn't portrayed as a good parent by spoiling her with everything. He was strict about bedtime, made sure she went to school on time, but also gave her warmth and hugs. He seems like the standard cold ML but that's just what he appears to be and he actually has many layers. The author does a good job setting up/peeling layers back to let readers see why he became the way he was when Yu Mian first met him.

Spoiler

The relief and happiness he felt when Qiu Qiu firmly said she liked him as her "dad" after returning will melt your heart. And I find it so cute that him being a super clingy boyfriend is an innate trait he can't help XDD.

The writing is beautiful, natural, and realistic and the author is amazing at creating the mood and giving readers a visual of the island through words. Reading this novel I could see the island existing and people going about their lives there. Hui Nan Que was also great at writing emotions realistically as well. Yu Mian's inner musings were introspective and quite profound at times while also showing his youth and growth as the story progressed. SO MANY BEAUTIFUL QUOTES! Between the romance and growth arcs there was also some writing that touched on certain themes and topics. I appreciated the way the novel portrayed peoples' attitudes towards homosexuality. It felt more realistic in that there will be people that completely accept you and people who are ignorantly homophobic. I also liked how Qiu Qiu's prosthetic leg was handled with sensitivity and not milked for drama or anything.

The translation is one of the best I've ever read! Many times you forgot this was a translated work, and the translator really captured the style of the author. Everything flowed organically and the translation felt so personal (if that makes sense XD). This novel is such a gem, and is now one of my favorite modern danmeis! I wish the best for Yu Mian, Yan Kongshan, Qiu Qiu, Grandpa, and Granny!!

Thank you Hui Nan Que for such a beautiful and moving novel! It was such a comfort and I can't wait to read more of your works! Thank you so much Ghost Bird for your amazing translation!! So much talent and thank you for translating this so more people can appreciate it! Much love and hugs (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡ (´。• ᵕ •。`) ♡ <<less

This was one of the best novels I have read. Plot, pacing, and characters are all done very well. The translators were awesome. Truly a slice of life novel that gives me anime vibes. A little bit of angst but there is nothing too heavy. It is a short read but I recommend giving it a try even if its not usually your cup of tea.

It's a good slice of life novel. Though it's short, it will leave you in a daze after finishing it. Yu Mian, the main character, is a boy in his late teens who has a type of synthesia where he could see other people's moods in colors and numbers. Kind of like a mood ring or system ig. And Ah Shan (I forgot his full name), the male lead, is an adult who is quite cynical of love because of his past experience with it but he's very steady and... more>> mature and takes good care of his daughter/niece.

Honestly, I thought their relationship wouldn't work out because while Ah Shan is mature, MianMian is not. But actually, I feel like they completed each other nicely. Ah Shan needs someone in his life who is enthusiastic and positive while MianMian needs someone who is steady to calm his impulsiveness that come from being young. If that makes sense.

I have to say though, the dog food was chef's kiss. The sweetness made my teeth hurt. Just wish there were more chapters after they got together. Nevertheless, the ending was perfect. I wouldn't have it any other way.

Be warned tho the second hand embarrassment almost killed me but thankfully there only few scenes of it. <<less

I loved every single part of this story to bits. It’ll make you laugh, happy, laugh some more, warm your heart, die of embarrassment and then love the youthful mistakes and laugh even more. And the love in this story is all over, in every character, in all shapes and colours.

Wow, what nostalgic and sweet ride this was. It was a very satisfying read. Most of the fluffy moments are towards the end, but this is truly a slow burn for reals. The ending was super satisfying and so freaking nice to learn a little bit more of the ML's thoughts and desires from his best friends perspective. Highly recommend this.

an amazing read...a heartwarming coming of age love story... everything about this was just right... the pacing, the length, the characters, the setting, the way everything was translated—as a person who cannot read the original language and can only rely on the translation, i’d say that it was exquisite... there’s no overly dramatic plot... it’s a well-balanced story and the characters were all wonderful that you just wanted to keep them all close to your heart... just amazing... please do not hesitate to pick this up and add to your... more>> reading list... it’s an easy five stars and a quick read too <<less
