Green Plum Island

When I was ten, I fell from a tree and hit my head. When I woke up, the world around me had changed. I could see people’s emotions in the form of numbers and colours—pink for love, red for anger, green for awkwardness, blue for sorrow, yellow for desire…

I met Yan Kongshan the summer after college entrance exams on Green Plum Island. Mysterious and handsome, with a tinge of melancholy, he was the ideal man of every woman on the island. And mine.

I wanted him to turn pink for me, but one day, he suddenly turned yellow. Despite that, he seemed ever so nonchalant when facing me.

Love is like lemon soda water. Sour and sweet, filled with energy.

You never know how a person’s heart beats for you, hidden in its cage beneath their flesh.

Woah, so thankful for the translation. A really sweet short coming of age read with a dash of angst.

MC has a very youthful disposition that shows and counteracts ML's wall and at first I couldn't really see it but when the sweetness came, it came in bucketful. It's really sweet.

First off, why the minus 0.5 was one part where I nearly thought I didn't like the novel, MAJOR SPOILER ... more>>
Spoiler

where they kind of nearly fell into this FWB situation but not because ML said he won't do it with MC but he would rather be MC's experiment partner than let MC do it with others. Not sure but the lead up to it just made me feel very uncomfortable emotionally. Especially the part where ML said he will put up the wind chime and let MC take it down but earlier implied that if MC do it, he will be treated like all ML's past flings (RED FLAG). Not sure, just emotionally rubs me off in the wrong way like they were entering into this weird relationship of nearly FWB for selfish reasons on each other's part. I just didn't like that part maybe because part of me thought this book was going to be a bit more smooth sailing. But fret not, this ambiguity last only a moment because bold MC quickly proposes to be a probationary BF for ML (knowing his aversion to love) to get out of that weird situation of FWB but not really. Thank goodness.

[collapse]
I think it's just me who didn't like that one off moment, nearly thought it was going to go downhill for me but luckily it didn't and it was great! MC was bold! GO MC!

Just want to add, for a short book, the side characters were great too, from MC's grandpa, to his good friend and coworkers at the bookshop to even ML's aunt. They're not wallpaper but added substance. Special shoutout to Qiuqiu who's especially bright and cheerful and has very high EQ.

The emotional conflict in the book (apart from the tangle I had in the spoiler above) were decently fleshed out for a book of this length. From ML's struggles with his belief and perspective on love to even MC and his relationship with his parents (and even his past conflict in school).

And the best part of the book, is how well they got along. Special mention is the last extra seen in the perspective of a side character.
Spoiler

Because ML in love is really unexpected and unlike his usual (aloof) self. And MC, likes it. And that, is fluff.

A cute story of growing up and falling in love.

The MC is a 18 year old boy who has the strange ability of understanding peoples moods by colored numbers that show up above someone’s head. But that isn’t what’s important.

He’s gay and while living with his grandpa he develops a crush and later falls in love with their neighbor.

I loved how the author narrated the couple’s growing relationship, from strangers to friends to lovers.

I really wish I had a green plum island to fall in love in too.

This novel is a gem. I finished it in one sitting.

Spoiler

I was nervous when MC could no longer see ML's color after they kiss.

Im glad that MC is persistent and proved to ML that he wont leave.

ML issues with love is sad but I could understand his point of view. Im glad he met MC and found that he is the one for him.

Its cute that ML became clingy when he fell inlove. His bestfriend was fed with dog food lol.

Good story, great story. If you're in a bad mood... read this novel and you'll feel better for sure.

The MC is so adorable and pure, I just want to give him a hug. As for the ml, he might appear cold but give it time and it's get better. He is good too.

  • Definitely a sweet, romantic and fluffy read. Its a bundle of joy so give it a go and you won't regret it.

My heart feels so full thinking how cute, funny, and sentimental this story is.

ML described MC as comfortable... and that's also how I feel towards this story.

It's soothing and comfortable, like watching the calm sea at night, taking in the night sky and the lull of waves.

Its been along time since I read such sweet romantic story. Yes Romantic! Gosh it’s like those days when I still in school reading those teen romance. And this one also so poetic, abit cross studio ghibli with a whisps or magic and nostalgia. Good read.

Well completed the novel and manhua, it was a long ride probably wouldn't say it's worth it binged in for some charector devolpmentt but none seen from the mc

He was honestly embarassing and childish, thier relationship seems so forced ngl even though it progresses I never felt the ML really loved the MC the same way he did mostly he treated him like a pushover, even though in the last extra they showed some of his affection but in other scene's it just felt like lust not love, with jealousy... more>> but non acceptances of his feelings

I really wished MC saw through and maybe get some charector devolpment but nah he still acted entitled and spoiled. Honestly if his charector hopefully matures as he gets older then he most likely Is gonna leave the ML lol, his love was more childish obsession to me

I like that end better than this <<less

Overall, the novel is very sweet and the romance is certainly there. Nothing much to it other than that.

The plot mostly revolves around the romance and nothing much happens other than that. If you guys are planning on reading a purely romance-based plot, then by all means you can read this book and maybe enjoy it.

I did like this, but for me this is a 3.5/5, not a life-changing read, but not such a bad one that I had to drop it.

I regret reading this novel, can't continue reading anymore. I tried forcing myself to read since lots of ppl said it was good but nahh not my cup of tea. I'm trying to search the good part of the novel but couldn't, and skipped certain parts of it while reading as it's too boring.

I got tempted by 4.6 stars rating from 600+ voters and good reviews but nahh, all bs. The novel only for brats, the way it delivered the contexts were too childish and innocence. I agreed with certain... more>> reviews, the MC is shameless brat, very forceful and childish. The characters were too dull, the storylines also straight forward, nothing special, I thought the novel was written by 18y/o kid.I don't recommend this novel to those people who love dog blood, angst, or dramatic novel.

The concept is good but the flow/storylines is bad, the MC should have interesting character which could attract reader to love it, but this MC is too disappointing. This is just my opinions, if u wanna read it, just go n read, if you don't want, then don't waste ur times. <<less

This is my favourite work in the whole world of Chinese novels. The threads of this novel are imbued with the fragrance of green plums and the taste of summer love.
One of the best works that conveys an atmosphere of: first love, small island, heart-stopping and heart-warming feelings. This work is full of charm. Each character keeps his character until the end, but does not forget to be increased and developed following the plot. I love this novel and absolutely recommended to everyone who progresses in the search of love.

I now understand why there were many 5 stars review on this one. The extras just feel so sweet that it leaves you smiling all throughout. This unexpectedly focuses on their age gap. I was so used to reading age gap stories that sometimes I forgot there were indeed a lot of gap between the older and younger generation. I actually put down this book a lot of times since I wasn't fond of love at first sight trope but I'm glad I decided to finish this.

I'm almost done reading... more>> all of the author's stories and she's definitely one of my favorites now huhu. Sadly, some of the novels she wrote wasn't completely translated. <<less

A short heartwarming and sweet novel. In some ways, the MC Yu Mian is very likeable so it was nice to read from his pov, from how he got his 'superpower' to how he chased the ML. Their relationship started out interesting I guess. Some say that MC 'forced' ML to date him because the ML seemed reluctant but I disagree. The ML is already 30. He knows what he's doing. The fact that he felt desire (turned yellow) for the MC, not push MC away despite the MC drunk... more>> confessing to him, still treating the MC well after all those moments, and is willing to give in and kiss the MC shows that he is impartial to him and already has a little feelings for the MC. The feelings may not have started out 100% pure but in the end everything worked out well didn't it? The MC brought the ML out from his past and the ML also seemed to be wayyyy happier. I'm glad they found each other!

Also to be honest, most of the characters are very very loveable. The best example will be Sun Rui (MC's BFF), Yan Wanqiu (ML's 'daughter') and MC's Grandpa :") So I highly recommend!! Go read it please haha <<less

Well I thought of reading this but I got cold feet now even though there are many positive reviews. There is a review that stuck out to me

One the ML being always passive and looking like he was so reluctant to have the mc

Two said the ML being ambiguous to the mc

... more>> Tree always sleep around and being a jerk to them afterwards

I dont know if all of the three are true but I guess I'm still not going to read this right now I'm scared of how much dignity and shame the MC is going to trow ending of the ML reluctantly accepting him.

(Well some really good reviews said that ML really like MC he just scared to love but I don't it's enough to be ambiguous to MC, some said in their relationship the ML is the one that being sticky well if that's true that's good but still I don't think I have enough heart to read this)

(Maybe someday 🤔) <<less

really nice. Lighthearted kind of read. It's the kind of romance novel that makes u feel like a sad single dog every chapter once they get together. 10 year age gap is actually kinda crazy if I think about me but thats a whole other convo and I dont really mind, it's good, it adds to the story.

[★ ★ ★ ★☆] 4/5 stars

I'm someone who can handle second hand embarrassment but whew the MC in this novel was really something (he's endearing and lovely but he has a special knack for putting himself in the most shameless and embarrassing situations) but the ML is almost worse with how clingy he is (i also mean this endearing, that man was whipped with a capital C)

anyways!! Green plum island was almost too sweet at times but I love every second of it. The angst is low but the... more>> fluff is high. I devoured this so fast and wished that it was longer because I'm not ready to say goodbye to all the characters yet.

green plum island is everything I love: slice-of-life, tension, endearing characters, supportive family members (grandpa and granny and little qiuqiu, and sun rui my beloveds), small town vibes, and a heavy dose of fluff. Green plum Island definitely is going to be one of my new comfort reads that I binge whenever I'm in need of a quick dose of serotonin! <<less

3/5

This is a nicely written and brilliantly translated piece of work. It's a simple, coming-of-age, slice-of-life novel with no angst and no real plot. And while I thought it was cute, I cannot rate this highly in good conscience because I did not like the main characters.

I must say though, kudos to the author for realistically capturing the underdeveloped mind of a teenager. The author does well to capture the MC's childishness, impulsiveness, naivety and complete lack of self-awareness. The MC is stalker-ish, clingy and force fits himself into the... more>> ML's life. He eavesdrops on conversations he shouldn't. He brings up things that he mustn't. He is presumptions, selfish and acts very much like a teenager who isn't mature enough to understand himself or the people around him. He also has low self-esteem, stemming from being bullied because of his s*xual orientation and the lack of affection he has received from his parents. He's a well-written character. I just didn't like him at all.

The ML is aloof, cold, rude and has anger issues. He is emotionally unavailable and not the kind of ML I'd like. But I am not the MC so I suffered through it. Other than being a reader and hot, he has no other redeeming qualities.

I felt that for the first 50% of the book, the ML tries desperately to evade getting involved with the MC. Then he just gives up and gives into the MC's persistence. It's not romantic at all.

I really liked Sun Rui and the Grandpa. They were adorable characters. I also liked the island vibes and the realistic portrayal of long-distance relationships. Overall, a nice palate cleanser between complex historical wuxia novels. <<less

Personal enjoyment: 3.25/5. Feels like a coming of age type of story. It’s been a while since I’ve read it so my memory isn’t the best but I didn’t get a lot of heart pulls or sweetness from it

characters:

mc: yu mian

ml: yan kongshan

... more>> summary:

MC has a hidden power where he can visually see people's moods via numbers and colors. Over summer break, he moves to a little island removed from the hustle and bustle of the city. He meets ml, the attractive next door neighbor nine years his senior with a five year old and a bookstore. MC decides to pursue ml, but to his chagrin, nothing he does seems to make ml's mood index show any reciprocation. He learns that ML no longer believes in love after a failed relationship, and will only engage in one night stands with no strings attached. Despite getting rejected, MC wiggles into mls life by means of a 'physical-only relationship'. ML finally comes around and agrees to try out a romantic relationship, and MC finally sees ml's mood index showing love for the first time.

thoughts:
Spoiler

so I went into this novel thinking it was one of those 'older gong guides younger shou through life' type of trope and to my immense surprise it wasnt like that at all. In fact, the complete opposite happened. It was one of those rare novels where the ML goes through more character development than MC (not that its a bad thing).

yan kongshan has plenty of faults in the novel, one being his complete disregard of love. He failed relationships scarred him to the point where hes started to project his own insecurities onto yu mian. The whole 'wont believe in love' and 'youre too young' mindset started with his ex, after all.

i know I sh*t on yan kongshan a lot during my reading but in his defense hes gone through a lot and its not hard to imagine that his trust in people is hard to come by. I get that hes trying to save himself the heartbreak, but at the same time hes cornered himself to the point where he cant enjoy himself - and thats the issue. Yu mian and yan kongshan are almost foils of each other, one being so enamoured by love and giving his all at courtship, and the other jaded to the point that hes determined to never love again despite still in his twenties. Its a good thing yu mian was finally able to bring him out of his shell, because he does seem genuinely much happier with love than without.

the other fault being his staunch stubborness that does more harm than good. Case in point: he treats yan wanqius biological dad with open hostility despite father and daughter wanting to meet each other. It was a minor plot point in the novel but one thats brought up repeatedly - which I think is because the author wanted to bring to light yan kongshan's bad habit of getting caught up on his personal dislikes and assuming the worst in someone.

yu mian on the other hand, he knows what he wants and stops at nothing to get it. Throughout the novel he was forward and proactive, albeit shy and awkward at times, but never did he once give up. I really do appreciate that because coming across a younger MC shou like yu mian is so incredibly rare to see.

i was absolutely in love with green plum island, it provides a beautiful ambient setting for a love story to take place. Its like a picturesque little sactuary, perfect for healing and a summer's romance to bloom. Both yu mian and yan kongshan see the island as 'home' and 'comfort', and I think it really lives up to that description :')

i also appreciate how the extras shows yu mian finally coming back and settling on the island -permanently- after all his studies and work have concluded. Yan kongshan undoubtedly had his own reservations of starting a long distance relationship with a younger and ambitious partner whos career can never settle him in one place, but he gave him his trust nonetheless. And yu mian didnt take it in vain, he returned, as if to say trusting him wasnt a mistake at all. Yu mian promised him that he isnt like his ex, that ah-shan and green plum island will always be his first priority. Actions mean more than words, and im glad the author showed that.

This is well-written for such a simple premise and plot this story has. The fact that I got invested in binge-reading a simple story such as this one shocks even myself lol. But if I'm honestly going to point out something that deeply intrigues me about this novel.. It's the MC's character.

Some might say he's needy, a bit stalkerish, etc. But for me, he's such a unique and genuine character. He's bold, simple, and full of life. If it was me, given that kind of ability, I would be so... more>> wary of people, and have a high possibility of being withdrawn. But surprisingly, he didn't grew up like that. I do think he is indeed blessed for being surrounded by genuine and honest people who loves him, like his granpa, while growing up (and even he realizes and admitted that he's blessed for having these people in his life).

And tbh, during the period of MC courting ML, MC appears to me as more mature than ML. He's (MC) quite complex as well. When you think he is naive, he would surprise you with his profound and sensible thoughts. When you think he is mature, he would display some childishness and innocence.

*sighs* Now I'm feeling envious, I also want a Mian Mian in my life 😩. <<less
