Really enjoyed this! Both MC and ML were able to overcome their initial guilt about their first meetings and the reticence to express their true feelings. Both of them want to see each other live happily, but still have a more sarcastic and black-bellied side. The MC is kind of a dope, but only in his understanding of people's thoughts, he isn't annoyingly s*upid.

There wasn't really follow up on the rival love interests, but I don't actually think it would have enriched the story much if there was, so that's... more>> not really a problem here.

I do wish Vivian had kept their given names intact, buuut I understand at least the problem Addis had with Si'Ze lol.

The pacing was good, both action and emotion moved at a nice speed, and it was fun unraveling the mysteries. I definitely know what danmei to recommend for those who also enjoyed reading this project! Thank you to the team at ExR for sharing it! <<less

holy crap, some readers really can't stomach any flaws in their mcs, can they? this is the reason why we end up with so many golden mary sues and gary stus.

the MC is one of my favorites. even if he seems to be shallow, there are real emotions and worries that he conceals behind this facade. he's the kind of person who pretends to be careless, but is actually quite brave and kind. he takes action and steps up to the plate when he needs to, and is truly selfless... more>> when it counts. some may see him as a cowardly, inactive protagonist, but that's only b/c they're blinded by the ML's brilliance.

yes, the MC is flawed, but that makes him more realistic. believe me, I also fall for those perfect, does-no-wrong protags all the time, but this MC is deliciously contradictory and REAL. he feels like a human, because what is a human if not a ball of contradictions and hypocrisies?

anyhow, even if you don't like the MC, you've got to at least like the plot and mystery of the story! seems episodic at first, but the mystery deepens and a thread connecting everything to the MC begins to appear... absolutely fascinating! <<less

Honestly, I liked the MC. People are all up in arms about it because he has ulterior motives.

But he's so upfront about it. What's the problem?

Especially from the entertainment circle, he just wanted to make some connections in order to achieve his goals. There's nothing wrong with that. The ML knew from the get-go that he was interested in his money (lmao).

But all of the above is just on the surface. The true Finch doesn't care about money as much as he makes you think he does. Why?

Spoiler

It's stated later that in their past history, the ML previously gave Finch the impression that he was homeless and had no money.... but Finch was still fine with it! They lived together for several months, and Finch was happy raising a "broke/hobo" boyfriend because they got along well, so it's obvious that Finch doesn't care if his partner makes money.

[collapse]

Also (big spoiler), a lot of reviewers are wrong:

Spoiler

Their breakup had nothing to do with money. Finch was scared to come out to his family but always regretted breaking up with him.

Fast forward to when they meet again: no matter how many times Finch talks about how rich the ML is, the ENTIRE time was spent trying to avoid the ML. NOT trying to get the ML's attention.

Now, when the ML showed some positive feelings back, Finch was reminded of his regrets with the breakup; that's why he seduced the ML, and NOT bc ML was rich yo. If Finch was only obsessed with money, he would have approached the ML FROM THE FIRST CHAPTER, which he does NOT.

[collapse]

So I don't see an issue with the MC. Rather, his character was very charmingly original and quite "realistic" as that normal person.

Normal people have to juggle several priorities and are attached to their life. Not everyone is out to be a hero. Finch is quite a sympathetic character. He stands up for his friends and acquaintances, even when he's quaking inside. That requires way more courage than some OP mastermind totally in control of every situation showing off.

Overall great story and lovely translation. Thank you for sharing it with us. <<less

Even though the chapters are few but I can't stand reading it, actually the story is pretty good but the MC characters make it ugly. I don't like MC (this is my first time), he is s*upid, unstable, shameless and self-conscious. He is a fan of faces and money, does not hesitate to lick people with higher power. He dated ML because ML was very handsome then after that he broke up, but when he found out that ML was rich he did not hesitate to approach him and seduce.... more>> MC is very strange, he seduces ML but when his waist is held very embarrassed or when he seduces ML but it doesn't work, he is very angry. I wonder with ML, why he likes MC? There is nothing good about him, his acting skills are just ordinary, deserving of never being a famous actor. <<less

MC acts like a cheap hoe.

It's not even a question of Jack Sue, White Moonlight etc. MCs can have different charachteristics, from being soft and kind, to being devilish and ruthless. I prefer strong queenly MCs with devilish charm. But none of the MCs I've read about had settings of this type of a cheap shou. MC for me can calculate everything, but they can't calculate feelings.

Why we don't like it? Simply because in BL we look forward to a healthy relationship, but from the get-go you get this dude's... more>> thoughts of: a) regret that they've broken up, he regrets missing out on such luck/resources for himself; b) calculating, if they could get back together (for same greedy reason) ; c) when he realizes it's impossible he switches to his immediate boss instead. This taste of cheap is hard to swallow. Even his own thoughts from the last chapter: Besides, he is still calculating selfishly. MC talking about himself. At least he's self-aware ahahaha.

Even his "feelings" for ML he realized only after

Spoiler

ML sacrifised himself to close the door of the other world, which means closing from the inside. That's why people are more inclined to him. MC actually knew that ML would not let any harm fall on MC's head, that was MC's choice, not effing justice, but his selfishness. Ahahahaha I laughed so hard, that's what you call cheap of the cheap, he says all this in the last chapters!! :'D But sure thing after ML is gone MC is very sad and realized - omg, I love him~ uwu

[collapse]

So, that's why I say MC is the cheapest I've met so far. And into the tr*shbin he goes. <<less

The MC is humanly realistic and definitely not as unscrupulous as the other reviews make him out to be. Far from it!

Let's not be hypocrites and claim looks & wealth shouldn't attract people. Why else would these webnovels be filled with gods and godesses?

It's normal for MC to get attracted to ML that way. Didn't their feelings develop well in the end?

... more>> It's not the pure and magical romance most webnovels sell, but it's romance, alright.

I personally like how the story shows us that being dishonest about our feelings and not owning up to our true selves can easily make us miss out on precious things or people. And then, it might be too late to regret. <<less

i loved this so much. It's comparably short to stories with the same theme but really well-put together and smooth to read; no big plotholes, the pacing was just right, the romance was sweet, and the characters were likable. What's there to dislike? Hm, but I don't understand the dislike for MC, it seems a bit out of place?

Spoiler

tbh, I was afraid the MC and ml's dynamics would be some cringy and awkward bantering or passive aggressiveness every time they meet but I forgot this didn't have the bickering couple tag haha. When the MC and ML meet again for the first time after their breakup two years ago, the MC had just learned the ml's true identity as a rich person. He starts lamenting how they broke up and how it turns out he had been sitting on a pot of gold during that time they were dating. I can see why people would dislike MC from here, because after this, he continues thinking about how he regrets that his ex was rich and he was thinking of getting back together. I think the misunderstanding caused by this was on the writing. First impressions are always important and this is how our MC was introduced and how he usually thinks for the first few chapters of the story. However, if you bothered to continue reading, you'd realize those were just initial or surface level thoughts. As the story progresses, we learn more about how the MC dated the ML back then without knowing his identity and he was very excited. He truly liked this boyfriend and was happily going to raise him (he was going to be the provider in the relationship). In fact, the real reason they broke up wasn't because they had problems or that the ML wasn't up to par to our MC. The MC had just figured out he was gay at this time and ML was his first boyfriend. He wasn't ready to come out of the closet yet when his sister wanted to meet the ML through dinner. Thinking it was easier to just say they broke up before they could meet, the MC broke up with the ml. Surprisingly, I didn't see any reviews complaining about this cowardice, but the MC was self-aware at least and later, he's finally ready to face the ml. And, he does. Nonetheless, I think it's a bit uncalled for to hate the MC because of his supposed attraction to the ML because of his wealth. I was elated when we saw the ml's thought on this and it's exactly what I think: looks or riches are reasonable qualities for a person to like in someone. There's nothing wrong with liking someone because of that. Maybe some of you reviewers might not have high standards, but some of us do care about whether they're pleasing to look at or can financially support us, etcetc. The MC himself is goodlooking so why should he look for someone who isn't goodlooking or is average-looking? He even explicitly says he wouldn't just date anyone rich. This is quite obviously backed up by the fact that he didn't sleep with some rich backers to get to where he is now. Moreover, our ML is totally okay with this so why are the rest of you so mad? He understands that some people really look for that in a person and he was even happy he had those traits so the MC would like him more. At the same time, he knows that the MC liking him only for that would make their relationship superficial and difficult for them to go through hardships together. The ML knows and he gets it. I was a bit frustrated seeing the hate for MC because he really does grow to love the ML before. His like from just having dated him for two months grew naturally and they later clear up their misunderstandings. It's nice and sweet.

now on the ml's part, he's somewhat aloof and cold at first. This is understandable. The MC broke up with him and didn't contact him anymore after that so he assumed the MC didn't care and that their relationship passed like air to him. And yet, he still loved him. It's never really explained how but he has a brief monologue about having known the MC before they dated and for longer, that their meeting wasn't accidental. When they meet again, the ML is still in love. And he seemed to be trying to somewhat reconcile with the MC. He asks the MC to stay by his side and the MC misunderstands this, of course. Here, I'm sure the ML was trying to have him by his side again but the MC just thought he was protecting him for the time being. The ML acts on a constant push and pull with his behavior towards the MC, seemingly cold one time and still in love with him on the next. The ML is conflicted because of the misunderstanding between them from those past two years. Funnily enough the ML was also getting jealous and misunderstanding the mc's fawning attitude towards his boss luo and later xie yan. This guy was amusing to watch. He's super sweet but his heart's a mess. Well, the two make up anyway. The MC realizes how the ML truly feels about him and is overjoyed. They have a lot of talks, though they keep getting interrupted. Later, they finally meet in the middle and reconcile, going back to how they were two years ago. It's such a shame we didn't have at least two more extras to see how they go from there because the ML returns at the end and the MC had just grown as a big star. Alas, it was a good read, all the same

[collapse]

i won't talk much about the plot, but I definitely loved the mystery and horror elements in there. It's not scary at all, but the setting is always superbly done. I did like the plot of this a lot. It's steady but keeps you interested. Definitely give this one a go if you want a quick but satisfying read! <<less

This story was absolutely amazing! I can't believe how much the author managed to fit into 47 chapters. I really could have continued reading about the characters for at least another 5 or more extras. In my opinion, Xie Yan deserves his own happily ever after as well!

This story reads a bit like a world hopping novel since each supernatural event that Finch encounters drops him into what is essentially a horror-like puzzle. I thought each event was really unique, and was a lot of fun to solve. I wasn't... more>> able to predict any of the solutions, but they were all very logical nonetheless. There is also a fun overarching mystery that slowly gets revealed towards the end. I do think the author didn't fully embrace the flawed Finch, because there's some reveals towards the end that I felt clashed with how Finch had acted up until then. It's like the author was trying to white-wash Finch, though I felt his flaws made him seem much more realistic. I'm sure the people who complain about how mercenary Finch seems in the beginning would approve.

However, in my opinion, you don't need a back story for breaking up and then getting back together. People change, and their knowledge about themselves and others changes as well. So what if realizing how wealthy your ex is spurs you to try again? How is that worse than people who build a relationship based on how attractive they think another person is? A relationship can start for many reasons, many of them shallow, but a thriving relationship grounded in more than those reasons can develop from those shallow beginnings.

To me, this story is the perfect answer to the question of what would happen if you opened yourself up to a serious relationship. Finch and even Cesar are afraid of truly committing to their relationship, and that's why they broke up initially. However, Finch and Cesar got a second chance that most people don't, and slowly learned how to tell each other their problems and chase after each other rather than running away. There are a couple of plot holes that weren't fully explained to my satisfaction (why is Finch so important????), but overall, this was a really enjoyable, imaginative, immersive story that I wouldn't mind re-reading when I need a good dose of horror romance. <<less

This book is awesome read. The plot is so good, I wasn’t able to stop. The MC is a fuuny guy and seem materialistic but his heart is good. But there are a mysterious forces always happens around him. ML is also a very mysterious person, strong and very rich. The horror and mysterious events are all very good and it’s really a short chapters (which I wish for more) there’s no dragging, too much dramas or too much misunderstandings. The romance and action actually comes together quite good.... more>> (Not like some horror genre heavily focus on the event or horror and forget the fluffy part) Even I feel the ending is abit cliche, it is very sweet. The translation team done a great job translating and I highly recommended this novel. Thank you. <<less

I only suffered this far bc so many of the good reviews said "the bad reviews probably only read a little bit and determine the MC is shallow, but he's not!" I read until 36 and I don't care anymore, I don't want to suffer from this writing and lowclass character anymore!! I won't say he's shallow or vain; he's poorly written, careless, his thinking is dumb even if he says he's not, naive, and ignorant at him being a tool.

If you like to read supernatural, unlimited flow, or romance,... more>> you've probably read something better before. If you like to read entertainment, you've definitely read something better. Altogether, this novel is middle of the road and besides the unlimited flow arcs, it's mostly telling over showing writing.

The fact the author has the audacity to whitewash the MC and that some of y'all readers are falling for it is nuts to me. The MC confronts the ML at some point saying "you still like me bc you unintentionally let me have resources" AS IF WE DIDN'T READ THE PART
Spoiler

where he shamelessly goes up to the ML who he broke up w for the first time in 2 years, winked at him, and then let his boss misinterpret their relationship so he could get into his boss's eyes. YES U USED HIM, SAY IT FOR WHAT IT IS. Just bc the ML was nice enough not to call u out bc he likes you doesn't mean YOU DIDN'T DO THAT LOWCLASS SHIT.

Not to mention you cannot continue to write in the MC's thoughts "oh he's rich I wish I didn't give him up. Oh he's connected to my boss I wish I was still bf w him so I could get resources" without him seeming lowclass basic bit*h EVEN IF HE still has feelings for the ML THAT THE AUTHOR DOESN'T TELL US UNTIL past ch 30.

Also "Oh the boss is probably treating me well bc he thinks I'm close to the ML (hm I wonder why he would think that oh yeah I did that doh -- thoughts he doesn't realize bc he's dumb & ignorant of his using behavior and the author whitewashed him ofc) even though I still haven't said I like him or why I broke up with until 2/3 of the way into the book but just vaguely hehe. I'm fine with getting all these resources for free bc the ML still likes me and I'm unintentionally using his feelings for me while not doing anything but being cowardly about my feelings, look I'm so pitiful bc my character setting is cowardly about my feelings but cute and ignorant."--he doesn't say these words but he might as well!!

Look realistically he can be cowardly and that's fine but I don't really KNOW WHY HE BROKE UP WITH THE ML YET and we're more than halfway in this novel. Is it just bc he liked him but couldn't like him more or he'd be scared ?? Idk the writing is probably waiting for the end to tell me and I cannot be bothered. Btw idk what another review was saying about him blocking a hit for the ML in the first arc, unless ofc I forgot, but I'm pretty sure for the first 4 arcs he doesn't block a hit for the ml.

What I'm saying is the MC had so many lowclass thoughts of getting popular by using his idols following and using the ml's connection (without even a thanks or acknowledgement bc he's an ignorant little baby "oh dear me they think I'm close to the ml, even though I'm still too cowardly to say my feelings or tell him why I broke up with him or the fact at that point I decided we won't get back together anymore, I'll just roll with it as if that doesn't make me a tool hehe") for resources & money with absolutely no details on him working hard on improving his acting (just "the MC got better and the director scolded him less." Telling writing) that I think he's a basic b*tch.

[collapse]

And I don't like basic b*tches. That's it. And if you don't too, I don't recommend this. Plus even if you like unlimited flow, don't read this. There are so many out there. Find one where the MC is more than a cowardly (but I will admit empathetic) narrator for the scene. <<less

After thinking about it for while and reading a few reviews, I realized that this was actually not that bad; good, but not great. I read a good amount of horror novels so this felt a bit tame and predictable and thus I for used on the CP more and the other characters that looked like they would be important...

Sadly, most weren't but not surprising since it's so short; especially one where it was pointedly said that he had plans yet, I saw nothing of them. The first half gave... more>> the impression that the CP's relationship could've gotten highly toxic especially bcz of the way how to how they broke up in the fire place.

The MC had faults but the ML isn't blameless either BOTH needed to work sh*t out within themselves and with each other. The MC's characteristics, especially from the first half is mostly perfect for the career he had and would've felt off if he had that Gary su halo on top of him. Plus there aren't that much chapters to develop him if he did had it either way. ╮ (. ❛ ᴗ ❛.) ╭ <<less

This was an amazing read

The translation is great and easy to read (as expected from exiled rebels)

I didn’t pick it up at first because I thought it was a short story and would be left feeling high and dry but it really was a nice length story

The MC is not like others, he has flaws and is selfish and a bit s*upid, however, he's a likeable person. He feels human, like this is how I'd react in that situation kind of human. I never once thought that the MC... more>> was unlikeable

The plot is nice the unraveling the mysteries is always nice and the story setting is good

Spoiler

sometimes however I wished that the author could explain the background of things more, like how did Cesar come out from the other side, , who is the Dominator??, , what is the foundation actually doing?? I wanted to know more about cesar and his past, , HOW did he become the thing he was...?

Stuff like that

However that doesn't take away from the reading experience :3

I wish there were extras... :')

I definitely recommend that you read this novel, it's great!! <<less

Finch may not be perfect but he's quite close to how "real" people react. He wants to get connections but that's not something he would reduce his dignity to obtain. He still has self-respect. He may also seem like he wants to get back together with Cesar just for his money but if you read till the end, you will know that that's NOT true. The synopsis is actually quite misleading regarding Finch's true personality. Cesar never even flaunted his money and used it on Finch. Money wasn't really an... more>> important part of this novel.

Honestly, I didn't really like the first half of the novel that much because everything seemed quite unrelated to one another (everything was pretty much mu*der and crime initially, which wasn't my thing). Finch's way of pursuing Cesar also wasn't really to my liking. It's what made us all think that he wanted Cesar just for his money lol. However, the second half of the novel started giving explanations for everything, including the random "ghost" appearances and Finch's feelings towards Cesar.

Although not a perfect novel, I'm pretty satisfied. There was a time I wanted to drop this novel during the first half of the story (due to too much crime-related scenes and Finch's portrayed shallow personality) but decided to continue because I was also curious. I'm glad I gave it a chance. I really liked the second half of the novel. It gave satisfactory explanations to the supernatural occurrences and Finch's previous actions.

Rating wise:

First half - 3/5

Second half - 5/5

Overall - 4/5 <<less

This is a cute comedy with melodrama that takes place with some horror and fantasy settings. However, things like horror, fantasy, mystery, or dark secrets are never written with as much appeal as they could have been. The writing and plot come off as shallow and unfulfilling.

The characters have intricate settings, but the only one that really gets explored is the MC himself, who had anxiety and regrets regarding his sexuality and ex-boyfriend. His character setting is somewhat interesting. However, depth isn't shown regarding other characters as much, and they... more>> aren't heavily explored.

I feel like the writing in this book just keeps doing things halfway. The themes are there, but none of them are fully explored. Even the romance and relationship development is often vague. There weren't any particularly suspenseful moments, and the arcs closed quickly. The most interesting arcs were the first two in the beginning, and then things just got weird. Although the first two had ghost mu*der mysteries, the other arcs ran off in completely different directions.

Over all, it's nice for a light read. I like the depth the MC has, especially when it's revealed there's more to him than he lets on. The settings were interesting, but the writing just stopped everything at a mediocre level instead of exploring key themes like it could have. <<less

Honestly I found it quite interesting in the beginning but the ending ended being quite disappointed. A previous reviewer said that the character flaws in MC and ML make them more real but I disagree. Instead of character development, it feels more like they’re going backwards. In the latter half of the story, it just feels like the two of them are just dancing in the hands of almost everyone else (okay like 5 side characters) and it leaves a bad taste in my mouth. The two of them really... more>> need to work on their communication because it’s just one misunderstanding after another, and it just doesn’t get any better.

Plot wise, it started off very interesting but then author threw so much unnecessary and unexplained stuff that it all felt childish. The only explanation there is is that it’s supernatural sh*t. None of the loose ends were tied up and the last 10 chapters were such a pain to read. <<less

I think all the ratings were for the translators. They did such a good job.. But the story though, that was a disappointment.

MC got no redeeming quality. I can't fathom why ML liked him at all. The tsundere-ness of ML and his-jumped-to-a-conclusion self was mixed poorly with the materialistic-face-con MC. Usually in another setting, the misunderstanding would be funny, angsty and sweet.. But this MC just ruined it.

Then came the supernatural. It got a good premise but the execution.. So disappointing. We never got a true explanation about who, what,... more>> and how. MC just suddenly accepted everything, they suddenly loved each other, so many died but never really impacted anything, and more.

Wasted my time reading this.

This only proved that to make something that plot heavy (supernatural themed) needed more than 47 chapters. Or else it would be like this. A disappointment. <<less

Yes the MC seemed shallow for liking the ML only for his looks and money at first. But as you read on you find that's not the case. He really did like the ML but he had his own reasons for his actions. And the ML knew about his reasons anyways even though he didn't let the MC know. What I disliked most was the miscommunication between some of the things that happened during the different planes crashing that they could have resolved faster. Like MC could have shared all the plots with the ML in the Emperor plane ahead of time instead of always waiting for the day of. Or the ML not telling anything about his inner demons to the MC or that the MC was the key etc so many miscomunication. But although the ending was fast and abrupt, I loved how he finally realized his love for the ML and his loving reaction when seeing him again. Yes its a HE.

The overall plot is not very intricate or huge but still fulfilling all the same. ML shone through very well, was powerful and stable ready to protect what he holds dear.

And our MC is adorable! Unlike what most reviews complain about regarding his character, I find him surprisingly refreshing. He is upfront about how he is and all the flaws are what make him human.

No matter how much we like perfect main characters, in reality, we are prone to desires and temptations so while... more>> the ML is the superhuman our MC is perfectly ordinary and I like that and am okay with it. Because he does not provoke a sense of disgust, just portrays that he is mostly indecisive, careless, and vain. But this does not mean he is not smart, kind, and genuine when it is needed.

Loved the short story of our mysterious and dangerous ML and soft and silly MC! <<less

okay wow. Usually with uneven ratings like these there's some point of controversy people disagree on.

I didn't find anything of the sort for this so it's double weird honestly. No, the MC's not selfish and shallow. I can only imagine that these reviews just stopped reading half-way or just ignored all the parts where the MC endangered himself to help the ML FROM THE START. First Arc! And the MC goes and risks his life and yet somehow that's ignored by most reviews who only complain that MC is vain.... more>> Not everything has to be spoon-fed y'know? The break-up reasons were very real and realistic. It's only 47 chapters of spooky cute romance with both characters growing and maturing after their 2 year gap. The little arcs were good and scary and just enough world-building to make sense and have fun with it.

Good novel. Good read. 100% recommend for people who like spooky stuff. 1 star off because I wish we had a little bit more on the MC's link to the horror attacks and a bit more background on the ML. A bit more detail overall for some extra oomph. <<less

At first (for about 24 chapters) I found the MC unpleasant: a heartless and shameless opportunist, selfish, in other words, a scum. Later with the development of the plot it is shown that the protagonist is not as shallow or s*upid as we thought, he may have hurt the ML more times than I can remember, but at the end of the novel many things that made me think so at least are explained, in addition to explaining many events and actions that seemed rushed and without feeling at the... more>> beginning

.

Anyway, it's a romance full of misunderstandings between the couple, not to the point of being frustrating or unreal, as it fits perfectly with the personality of both and their past. The supernatural events and their stories are quite interesting.

Spoiler

The only thing that puzzled me as the author left out was: WHY DO XIE YAN AND IQ ZHEN LIKE THE MC??? Like, they barely met or interacted!! But they liked the MC on a higher level than it should, which made me think they were also a snippet of ML, but that doesn't even make sense or have enough evidence to make it more doable.

I can't help but comment that ML also has his flaws and part of the blame in their relationship, but WITHOUT A DOUBT he is very understanding and loving towards the MC, too perfect! To the point that even now I wonder if the protagonist deserved so much affection and understanding when he was just being a selfish idiot in the beginning. Serious. For countless chapters I almost begged Caesar to leave Finch and go live a better love because he's too good! <<less
