It was cute and fluffy right up until they get together (close to the end) and you realise just how much of an emotionally abusive hypocritical jerk ML is.

Especially when it comes to s*x. MC is a weak sauce doormat with low self esteem, and ML actively abuses that low esteem to make MC do things he doesn't want to do. "Consent".

It's all just very uncomfortable.

Please do not miss out on this novel !. The characters feel very human with their interactions and you could slowly see the characters come to love each other. Both the MC and the ML have very distinct personalities though the character setting is very stereotypical. We have the MC who has a Cinderella like story from rags to riches and the ML who is a CEO who has generational wealth. But the MC has a strong personality that is shaped due to his hardships and doesn't want anyone's pity... more>> and ML who has worked hard from childhood to reach the position where he is. If these reasons aren't convincing, there is high quality smut.

Spoiler

Bonus points

  • The ML's interaction with others*chef's kiss, this was the only novel where the ML treated others like they were human, like he had some interaction, or maybe it is in the authors portrayal of characters that show up only once but it feels like a genuine human talking
  • The comments, although very exaggerated was funny at times, especially when the cp fans figured out their side accounts
  • The whole MC and ML's interaction, how the ML was annoyed with MC, to ML only regarding the MC as "fun", to becoming good friends and finally falling in love.
  • the angsty scenes was Imo done right, although it was resolved rather quickly, but it did make me sad.
  • Smut done right, there was consent, there was lube, it was hot

Surprisingly enjoyable, with a few minor issues, but overall still a great novel with good character development and a very sweet romance! I definitely missed that this is apparently meant to be a gong protagonist novel so I'll be referring to Jiang Liusen as ML and Xia Xi'ai as MC for the purposes of this review. It's a multiple POV novel though so the gong protagonist isn't that relevant.

The author does a really good job at handling talk about trauma, and I appreciated her interpretation of depression a lot (honestly... more>> rare for me). Both main characters have interesting and difficult backstories, and it bleeds into their current lives especially at the beginning and in the conflict points of the novel. I really liked the author's way of having them grow from their pasts in a slow and meaningful way while also not keeping them stuck for very long. They were able to communicate pretty clearly with each other (ML being better at this than MC) and conflicts were resolved realistically.

Jiang Liushen has the thickest face of any ML I have ever read. If he's not flirting, he's teasing. If he's not talking nonsense he's sweet talking like no one's business. He's really such a fun character to read, and every scene with him is hilarious. I also think this is one of the first times I've read an actor character actually using his skills IRL to mess around with his partner. He's just overall a very playful and good-hearted person, and his teasing is never to a harmful or cruel degree. Just a great character.

Xia Xi'ai similarly is a very likeable MC, with a pretty depressing backstory (that gave me physical chest pain reading) and a very strong mentality towards his life and career. His personality is very consistent, and his thought processes are always realistic, especially given his backstory. He's a very multi-faceted character, but his motivations and behavior never feel out of place despite it.

Only issue I really have with the story is how coercive the s*x scenes are made to be, like the author really plays with dub con in this. Their first time, MC is in a lot of pain - like crying, asking ML to stop kind of pain, which I personally find off putting and not a sign of a good time. I love a crying shou, don't get me wrong, but there has to be a sign that they wanted to get to that state. MC just always seems like he's having a terrible time... and it ends up reading like a r*pe fantasy of the author's more than loving s*x between two consenting adults.

The translation quality is good and flows well, but just my nitpick that the ML's nickname for MC is actually "little friend" (小朋友) not "kiddo" - I get maybe TL was trying to capture the meaning more than the literal translation of the nickname, but "kiddo" gives me pe*ophile or grandfather vibes in English lol. <<less

I'm not sure if it's the tone of the novel, or the way the characters are set up, but I can't help cringing as I read.

As a fun joking easy-going type novel, there are too many parts that take itself too seriously, trying to build up a dramatic dog blood backstory that just feels out of place with the nonsense of the rest of the novel.

If taken as a serious novel, the nonsense fun parts are too jarring, like an anime omake, that it feels out of place.

The characters end... more>> up feeling like caricatures and not in a good way. It's obvious the ML is meant to be an overbearing teasing gong and MC is a long-suffering pudding who's strong inner self will eventually prevail as he climbs up, but I just can't get emotionally invested in them or their relationship with how corny it all feels while reading.

Not sure if it's the tone of the translation or the original author's style.

Has the makings of a good novel, but disappointing execution.

Didn't even get to the smut. Sobs <<less

Really nice!

Spoiler

I really like the dynamics between Xia Xi’ai and Jiang Liushen. Many of their scenes together make my heart swell! I hope their relationship becomes more equal, as there is a great power imbalance between them - the author addresses that through Xia Xi’ai and his insecurities (simply how Jiang Liushen is more famous, has more connections etc.) but I hope Xia Xi’ai takes the opportunity to learn from him- as at the moment, Xia Xi’ai is very dependent on his advice regarding everything! Furthermore, I also hope that Xia Xi’ai becomes more proactive. Although in his backstory he was desperate for work, in the book he does not search for opportunities, rather they really just fall on his lap. I hope he tries to befriend or just expand his social connections- because he has a habit of pointing out the problem, but has no motive to solve it. I think this would also level the relationship between Xia Xi’ai and Jiang Liushen (more business connections, more friends to hang out with and ask advice for), because personally, I think that being dependent on one person for everything is dangerous and s*upid.

Wishing he would develop in the future!

I also am slightly suspicious at the characterization of Xia Xi’ai overall. I do love his personality, it’s a nice alternative compared to other sly and cunning protagonists in showbiz novels, but it’s unbelievable how short-sighted he is! In his backstory he experienced many traumatizing events, so although his optimistic mindset is very inspirational, I think it would have been better if he learnt other life lessons beyond being emotionally stable- such as, making connections for work, and by overall being more emotionally aware of the world and his surroundings.

Besides that, it’s a really good novel!

this is a great story!! Its super cute, I love the MC and ml. A really really great and satisfying story, the romance and characters are all very nice. I can say that every character besides MC and ML don't have much backstory to them, but they are still pretty good story contributing wise, and the story isnt very long itself, being 82 chapters. Im not the most nitpicking person so I wont be criticizing much.

the MC is my style, he's wild, eloquent, and humorous. I love the way he... more>> treats ml, yes he dug into mls past but it wasn't like he did it for solely personal reasons, and ML didnt mind anyone finding out. Despite how MC seems, he's actually very sensible and emotionally intelligent, he knows when to stop playing around and is knowing of his feelings, his relationship with other stars is very natural and funny as well. Some people may find it a a bit annoying seeing hes a bit impatient getting into bed with ml, but for the most part actually doesnt do anything that the ML doesnt want him to, all consensual. The MC also has some trauma which he did come over, and besides the casual and wild style of his, he can be very serious which is good to see and know that he isnt just a happy go lucky guy without any problems.

the ML is very good as well. Hes cute and sweet, but he isnt naive or dense as other typical protagonists who dont know what they feel about the love interest or whatnot. He figures it out pretty fast, and I like that a lot. He's pretty insecure and you might find his behavior to be a bit irritating, but knowing the environment he'd grown up in, you will be able to understand why he acts like such. There is also a scene where he is tricked and it seems like an obvious trap, but the translator explains very well that it might seem obvious to us since we have a godseye view, so dont blame him too much for being 'innocent'. The story seems to exaggerate on that a bit sometimes as well, but he's a capable adult as you can see in the rest of the times.

their relationship is very nice. I love the subtle confessions and behaviors between them and the realization of their history. MC is very romantic and ML is a bit receptive. Their dynamic is cute, there are a bit misunderstandings between them but they get solved relatively fast. I really enjoyed the scene where MC first told about his friend to ml. It was a really touching scene to me and made me see MC in a new light. MC and ML are a true pair, they talk to each other when needed and support each other, and there arent any annoying long lasting issues between them. I was happy to see MC open up to ml, and it was nice to see ML speculate about MCs true personality.

i also love MCs bestfriends, very humorous interactions with them when we see them.
all in all, this story is great, please give it a read!! Mtl is extremely easy, and if you do end up mtling you absolutely will be able to understand the story. <<less

Very enjoyable read. The MC is a sweetie and remained a pure sole even after all that he’s been through. He really loves the ML as he’s been there to help him through his challenges. The ML is hilarious and shameless. Their interactions as very cute. Nice read.

3.5 starts - It was alright at first, but halfway through it got boring since there are no real stakes. Everything comes easy to the couple.

I ended up annoyed with them both. They are quite similar to the leads in 'Pay Attention to Me', but they felt like less fleshed out versions. The gong/top became too domineering and I get why some readers were uncomfortable with it. The way he behaved came off as forcing the shou/bottom sometimes, although I don't think that was the author's intention.

The shou was too... more>> much of an innocent lamb. He's already 20 years old and deeply in love, but for some reason scared of the idea of having s*x and behaving like a maiden in ancient times protecting her virtue before marriage. I generally dislike it when the bottom is portrayed as too much of a blushing virg*n who can't stand the idea of doing s*xual stuff with his romantic partner, so the partner has to be super pushy for them to get anywhere.

I thought there would be a secondary couple with the tension between two of the side characters, but their problem with each other was never explained, maybe the author forgot about it because she was too busy writing fluff for the main characters? <<less

Very cute and romantic in a Korean drama kinda way but it was a good light-hearted read. Both MC and ML are really cute and mature enough not to cause any unnecessary jealousy which is rare in a BL novel world. Side chracters do pique my interest and make me want to ready After Dawn.

I rate this a 3.5. Mostly because the translation is pretty clean all around.

At first I didn't mind the ML's games, the teasing, the light bullying of the super innocent MC but when he got serious about their relationship I feel like he should have started showing more respect for the MC and communicating properly.

The ML showed no character growth and came off as a spoiled, rich, arrogant guy who just happened to be a good actor. The closer it got to the end of the story the more the... more>> ML started to resemble a cardboard cut out. He had only a few settings, lovey, jealous, teasing, bullying and pe*vert.

The MC was only slightly better. He showed that he was making a genuine effort to better himself and his self esteem for the relationship, but his continuing naiveté towards the MLs tricks started to make him have the aura of a stunned bunny/bullied child. I would have liked him to stand up to the ML and say "love you, but you have to treat me as a partner and lover not a toy."

Also I'm not a big fan of how the ML keeps calling the MC "kiddo" even after a big NSFW scene and a lot of explicit near misses. One, it brings in a bit of that ick factor. Two, he's really not that much older than the MC and this comes across as a bit demeaning. Again, no equality in the relationship. Even if it had the closer translation of "little friend" that @Damnmei pointed out, that's not really an improvement.

The fluff and funny scenes carried the story for a long time, but they couldn't cover up the inadequacies by the 2/3rds mark. Try something else. <<less

It is a sweet fluffy romance piece between a flirty (only to shou) suave gong and a sweet and innocent-like (only to gong) shou.

Their romance is established quickly in the novel, with the gong quickly falling for the sweet shou and protecting the shou when the latter gets into trouble. Shou is seemingly tough and cold, but actually has a soft interior that only the gong knows.

Any drama or misunderstanding is resolved within 2 chapters max and the angst is fleeting.

Basically a fluff story that is nice for a casual... more>> read.

To be honest I do like the protagonists and their personalities but because the story moves so fast with their romance so quick and drama is like almost non-existent, I find myself wanting something more substantial. The shou also basically wins the most difficult award at the end with his song and I’m just like, sigh this is so Gary Stu. I wish there was more but it is a good enough read for some romance with a bit of smut. <<less

Omg it was so f*cking good! I just finished reading the last chapter of the main story and damnnn, I'm so glad that I read this story. This was exactly wat I needed rn, a sweet and light wholesome read. The comedy is also good and I just liked everything in it. I'm very satisfied with this novel and will definitely read the extras later. Will update my review when I'm done with the extras.

It was okay. I like how the author wrote about depression. They didn't delve into it deeply but they didn't treat it shallowly either. Just enough for a story like this.

I don't like the "little kiddo" everywhere though. Something about that pet name is just so off-putting & cringe to me especially since the MC never liked it and is hardly a child.

The falling in love part is also very shallow and sudden. But I guess it's acceptable for a story like this.

I also do not like the smut parts... more>> at all because it's like the more XXA doesn't want it, the more JLS pushes for it. Of course in the later parts, it's shown that XXA is just being shy and just doesn't know how to vocalize his wants. But during the earlier parts where all that's shown is his reluctance and giving in to pressure, it can be quite uncomfortable to read. It's not r*pe or assault either because he does consent to it. It's just that it's more of "my boyfriend wants it so I should want it too" rather than him actively consenting to it. But like I said, later it's written that he actually does like it. It's just a weird way to write about consensual s*x between couples if you ask me. <<less
